GLORIOUS DUNES: The year 7 girls cross country
Kings and Queens of the country THE AllStars photographers dropped in on a busy sporting week at King Edward VII and Queen Mary School ... but then again most weeks are busy at the all-action Lytham school.
School cross-country events are gruelling at the best of times but the annual KEQMS race has some unusual obstacles as the school makes the most of its natural surroundings.
Walkers on Fairhaven promenade had the perfect view last Wednesday as the racers braved the icy elements and the sand dunes. The senior winners were Oliver Johnson, Daniel Watts, Stuart Kilner, Jessica Lambert, sisters Sophie and Lottie Owen, Tom Higham, Ralph Dowds The other winners were: Year 9 Richard Grocott, Thomas Regan, Elizabeth Barrow, Ruby Lawson Year 8: Ben Everson, William Dale, Rebecca Waite, Rachel Hirst Year 7: Matthew Hall, Sam Lavelle, Alexander Stanier, Nicole Hadlow, Mady Horsfield, Elena Webb. Also defying cold and blustery conditions to produce some strong performances were the Year 8 netball teams, who faced Carr Hill. The A team recovered from a half-time deficit to draw 7-7, with Rachel Hurst outstanding. Abi Gisham excelled for the B team but Carr Hill got on top after the break for a 9-7 victory. The latest round of hockey matches brought impressive results against strong Lancaster GS teams. The Under-15s continued their fine form with a 2-0 win, Joanne Ker’s first-minute goal setting them on their way. Name the Panther and you could win a season ticket Clubbidstorecruityoungfans
PANTHERS have launched a children’s competition to name their mascot. And there is a great prize up for grabs. The Panther mascot is already a firm favourite at home matches but he has remained nameless ... until now. Drop us a line with your suggestions at allstars@blackpool gazette.co.uk by 5pm this Friday and we’ll pass them on to Nick. The winner will receive a signed Panthers replica shirt and a season ticket.
NEW Blackpool Panthers RL development manager Nick Settle has wasted no time spreading the 13-aside gospel in local schools. One of Nick’s first tasks was to visit Roseacre Primary School in Stonycroft Avenue to promote the first home game of the season against Keighley Cougars at Fylde RFC on Sunday. Deputy head Sean Hickey was happy for Nick to invite 30 pupils along to the Woodlands for a skills ses-
Kirkham on full Powers KIRKHAM Grammar School U14s won through to the semifinals of the Lancashire Cup as Ben Rhodes-Powers scored four tries in the away win over Liverpool College. KGS overcame the icy conditions, the absence of injured captain Ryan Wilkinson and an early try by the Merseysiders to secure a fine 33-10 victory. The visiting pack gradually got on top, with Marcus Mollinga, Sam Gale and Robbie Lockhart forming an excellent back row. Besides man of the match Rhodes-Powers, Matthew Beaty was also outstanding, scoring the other try and landing four conversions.
sion before the big match in the Northern Rail Cup. The pupils involved will also receive free admission to the game for themselves and a parent/guardian. All the other Roseacre pupils are entitled to discount vouchers for the game. The plan is to run similar schemes at other schools throughout the season. ■ Nick Settle is pictured with some of the Roseacre pupils.
Pride and a Fawl Adam leads the way with ten as swim club goes on medal spree
BLACKPOOL Swimming Club have made an outstanding start to the year, amassing 38 medals in the North Lancashire Swimming and Water Polo Association Gala held over consecutive weekends at Palatine Pool. Adam Fawl (right) was the top swimmer in the 15 age group with five golds among his ten medals.
Adam, who lives in South Shore and is a Year 10 pupil at Palatine, has been swimming for the club since he was nine. He also achieved the National Qualifying time in 50m freestyle (25.49secs) and so can compete in the National Youth Championships in Sheffield in July. Bradley Yates was third in the 11-year-old group age, with a gold in the butterfly, three silvers and three bronzes. Other gold winners were Danny Davis (three in 11 age group) and Shannon Loder (two in 14s), both in the breaststroke. The club’s other medal winners were Joshua McLellan (three), Lewis Peach, William Dale and Stephen Marshall (all two) Blackpool SC are hoping for more success at the Lancashire County Championships next month in Manchester.
Battling Arnold out of Plate
FIGHTING SHOW: Arnold U16s in action against Crosby
ARNOLD School U16s narrowly missed out on a place in the semifinals of the Lancashire Plate when they lost 10-3 to St Mary’s School from Crosby. The home side never took a backward step in this tough, uncompromising clash, in which flyhalf Robbie Goodier kicked very well and Ben Blake, Tom Armfield and Alex Garrod were all tireless. St Mary’s led 5-0 at half-time despite dangerous breaks by James Cave and Harry McNulty. Goodier got Arnold on the scoreboard with a penalty but they had to withstand more pressure, with Kevin Wan and James Walker tackling well. The outstanding Goodier had the chance to edge Arnold ahead but missed a long-range penalty by inches. St Mary’s finished strongly and clinched victory with a try in the dying seconds. Tom Armfield, Luke Smith and Harry McNulty also caught the eye in the Arnold defence. The Under-16s had earlier won another close and physical contest against Crosby opposition, Merchant Taylor’s, 11-5. Goodier’s kicking made the difference as both sides scored a try. His penalty and drop goal
chant Taylor’s, the first XV were highly impressive 22-10 winners. Josh Beaumont, Wilf Whittle and Julian Richardson scored the tries as Sam Cole and Richardson added goals in the team’s best display of the season. The second XV applied plenty of late pressure but could not add to Ben Nowell’s try in a 10-5 defeat. The under-15 A conceded tries late in each half to go down 13-0 despite strong displays by James Wilson, Jacob Reid and John Kenyon.

A late MT try spree resulted in a misleading 43-15 scoreline in the under-14A game. Alex Casey, Sam Laycock and Louis Mottley scored tries for Arnold, who trailed by only five points with ten minutes left. The under-13A fought hard but lost 50-0 to an outstanding side, while the under-12A lost 29-0 despite fine performances by Tom Forster and Tigne Davis. Two tries by new scrum-half Sean Jagger helped the under-12B to an entertaining 25-10 derby win over King Edward and Queen Mary School. Zac Hocking, Rory Humphries and Jordan Makepeace were the other scorers.
Bid for revenge goes off the rails Fleetwood U17 13 Caldy 33 FLEETWOOD wanted to prove a point after Caldy had snatched a draw in their first meeting, but this rematch did not go according to plan. James Evans, Tom Hird and Jack Foden made a powerful front row for Fleetwood, who conceded the opening try only for flanker Danny Maher to reply in the corner after quick thinking by Tom Evans, who added a penalty to make it 8-7 at half-time. Fleetwood applied more pressure but could not capitalise on a Jamie Railton break and they fell behind to a length-ofthe-field try. And despite excellent displays by Fleetwood’s man of the match Tom Speed and No.8 Adam Dawson, Caldy pulled clear with two more tries. Fleetwood’s efforts were at least rewarded with a second try, again scored by Maher after he linked up with Evans.
Fleetwood Squad: Cameron, Cowie, Dawson, J Evans, T Evans, Hird, Foden, Macdonald-Hall, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Preston, Railton, Reynolds, Ruddlesdin, Speed, Teale, Turner, Walters, White.
Fleetwood U16 34 New Brighton 0 FLEETWOOD completed a double over the Wirral side as their pack dominated. They led 20-0 at halftime thanks to tries by Rohan Delaney and Tom Darbyshire, both converted by Scott Richardson who added two penalties. Darbyshire scored a second and Bradley Stapleton raced in for the final try from Sam Whittle’s excellent pass. Richardson continued his fine kicking form by adding both goals.

Wyre Juniors 1YMCA 8 YMCA returned from their long trip to Preesall with all three points. They adapted to the snowy conditions well and Chris Clinch gave them an early lead. Two Jordan Milligan goals, one from the penalty spot, made it 3-0 at half-time. Kit Gregory soon added two more before Milligan completed his hat-trick. The home side pulled one back through Cox but YMCA finished as strongly as they had started, with Josh Clayton’s goal and a second from the outstanding Clinch completing a fine performance, in which Owen Futter and Sam Warburton impressed. Thornton Cleveleys 0 Foxhall 4 CALLAM Rae finished a fine move to give Foxhall an early lead and Joshua Errington made it two with a screamer into the top corner. Rae’s second made it 3-0 at half-time. The second half was far tighter and Joshua Cason headed the only goal from a free-kick in a much-improved all-round performance by the Hoops. Lytham Juniors 1 South Shore 0 LYTHAM left it late but came away with a deserved win against a very tough South Shore side. Although Ellis Whorlton-Jones and Ethan Warren were in superb form for Lytham, they struggled to convert their chances until Harrison Openshaw’s lastminute strike clinched the points. FC Rangers 2 PoultonYouth 2 TWO Harry Whetton goals, the second a penalty, put Poulton on top midway through the first half only for Rangers to hit back with goals either side of halftime from Dennyson and Keeble. Blackpool Rangers Blues 3 Layton Juniors 1 RANGERS scored first in this pulsating contest but Layton responded well as Josh Griffiths struck the bar from the edge of the box. Rangers doubled their lead from a corner, despite Alex Smith’s brave effort to head the ball clear. After half-time, Layton came back strongly and pulled one back when Jasmine Singleton broke quickly and Jermayne Rodoway curled his shot in after exchanging passes with Joey Green. Layton were determined to equalise, with Charlie Casey strong in midfield, but it was Rangers who clinched victory with a third goal.
Donnelly, Willis and Shaw were the Rangers scorers, while Dom Lavelle and keeper Henry Turner shared the Layton man of the match award.
Warton Typhoons 1 St Annes 0 THIS was a great match in the snow which either side could have won. Britt’s goal for Warton after only five minutes settled it, though both sides had a host of chances. St Annes went closest with five minutes to go, when a shot struck both posts and was cleared off the line. Midfielder Phillip Mayler was St Annes’ man of the match, while Luke Gill was also outstanding in defence and George Kay was back to his best on the left. Fleetwood Gym 4 AFC Blackpool 3 FLEETWOOD avenged their defeat by Blackpool after coming back from 3-0 down at half-time to goals through Gaffikin (2) and Mantle. Gym started the second half full of determination and created several chances before Sean Barkworth headed home a corner. Dan Johnson then scored a superb solo goal which ranks among the best of the season for Gym. John Chadwick equalised with a penalty for handball, while at the other end Rangers had a penalty saved. Barkworth’s second from a long clearance completed the comeback in style.

Spirit ofYouth 0 Lytham Juniors 1 LYTHAM played with confidence from front to back to win a close encounter. Defences were on top in a tight first first half, but then Ryan Glennerster hit the bar for Spirit and Jack Richardson also went close. For Lytham, striker Ryan Robinson shot over after good work by Brandon Matthews, but the breakthrough arrived with 12 minutes left when the visitors’ man of the match Matt Hardman burst through from midfield to smash his shot home. Callum Willoughby was the star man for Spirit, who threw men forward but could not force an equaliser. Fleetwood 1 South Shore 3 SHORE won a tough encounter to maintain their grip on top spot. Josh Kay opened the scoring from a corner and it needed an exceptional Lee Squires save to deny Fleetwood an equaliser. Shore soon added a second as Ryan

Thornton join YM in semis
WOOD WORK: Jordan Wood was a scorer for Foxhall Under-15s
THORNTON Cleveleys and YMCA beat the freeze-up to clinch their places in the semifinal of the under-10 Coulton Cup. However, St Annes and Poulton Youth must try again to resolve their first round tie because the fourth replay was postponed. Thornton overturned a 2-1 deficit in the A game against Clifton Rangers to win 5-2 on aggregate. George Byrne and Jordan Stimpson were the Rangers B marksmen, with Josh Fleetwood scoring for Thornton, whose marksmen in the 4-0 B win were Stephen Cardwell (2), Jack Davies and Arthur Spencer. YMCA went through 5-1 on aggregate at home to Blackpool Rangers. Laurence Joyner (2), Dan Hood and Kyle Macauley gave the A team a 4-0 win. In the 1-1 B draw, Mark Wilsdon cancelled out Ryan White’s strike for YMCA. In the Plate Competition, Foxhall pipped Kirkham 4-3 after losing 2-1 in the A game, in which James Hanlon and Thomas Ward were Kirkham’s scorers and Jake Barrett
kept Foxhall in touch. An exciting B game saw Foxhall win 3-1 through Ashley Barron, Matthew Sheridan and Ben Staniford. Keenan Livingstone replied. BJFF won 4-1 overall at Fleetwood Gym. The A game ended in a hard-fought 1-1 dra, with Lewis Whittaker on target for Gym and Callum O’Neill for BJFF. Joshua Holland, Joe Piper and Cameron Waterman gave BJ’s B team a 3-0 victory. South Shore also comfortably progressed with an aggregate 5-1 win at AFC Blackpool. They were 3-0 victors of the A contest through George Laird, Quaid Henderson and Alex Varley. AFC gave a spirited display in the B game, in which Luke Davison and Luke Harris were Shore’s marksmen and Michael Bailey got the home goal. The lone league game was in division B, where Staining and Spirit Of Youth had a win apiece. Staining took the A game 1-0 and Spirit the B game 8-0 through Connor Fielding (2), Joshua Lamb (2), Jake McGarrity(2), Harry Bret and Ryan Philips.
