CARR Head Primary athletes have made their mark on the county circuit. After an excellent display in the 12-school local competition organised by the Wyre and Fylde Partnership, the Poulton school qualified – they were the top Wyre school – to represent their area in the county competition in Chorley. PE co-ordinator Claudine Armspach said: “They showed excellent team spirit and the attitude was really positive.
“It is great to see the children cheering each other on. It’s the perfect way to introduce the children to athletics and to the importance of teamwork.” Football matches against other schools from the Poulton area are under way to prepare for a major tournament. Athletics and football are coached at two of Carr Head’s many sporting clubs. Others are devoted to cross country, gymnasitics, judo, karate, multi-skills netball and rugby.

Stanley can’t Bridge gap Blackpool Stanley U17 8 Burtonwood Bridge 36 STANLEY made a strong start and were rewarded after five minutes when Dave Parfitt finished a good passing move in the corner. more tries stretched the Burtonwood lead to 30-4, the second an 80-metre breakaway. From the restart John Robinson scored Stanley’s second try, fielding a loose ball to stroll over before Bridge completed the scoring. UNDER-11
Lytham 1 Kirkham 1 LYTHAM denied Kirkham the win they wanted to clinch the title. The home side made the early running with the wind and took the lead inside 10 minutes thanks to Ellis Whorlton-Jones’ fine drive from the edge of the box. Matty O’Reilly, Andrew Sanderson and James Fletcher all pressed for a second but it remained 1-0 at half-time. Kirkham then had most of the play and equalised midway through the second half through Jones. George Carter and Alex Thomas impressed on the wings for Lytham and Charlie Rowlings made a superb last-minute save.

Clifton 0 Foxhall 5 JORDAN Ratcliff gave Foxhall a first-minute lead and Kieran Wilson scored from a corner to make it 2-0 at half-time. Foxhall came out hungry for more and Sam Kowalski also scored from a corner before Joshua Errington rolled in the fourth. Wilson’s second completed the scoring as the whole Hoops squad played well. Blackpool Rangers Blues 5 Warton Typhoons 1 A STRONG first-half display against the wind ensured the Blues maintained their unbeaten record. Christy Donnelly scored twice to make it 20 at the break, and then strikes by James Barkhuizen, Ben Webster and an own goal sealed a convincing victory. Warton deserved their consolation goal from Thorpe. Frank Sharratt was outstanding at the heart of Rangers’ defence. Layton 6 BJFF 2 LAYTON controlled the first half with the wind as an Alex Smith hat-trick and Jamayne Rodaway’s goal made it 4-0 at half-time. BJ pressed in a tighter second half but Layton remained solid as Lewis Borrino and Nathan Kirk shared the man of the match awards. Jamayne Rodaway completed his hat-trick and BJFF hit back with goals by Aspinall and Moore.
UNDER-12
YMCA 2 Lytham 1 LYTHAM took the lead when Harry Greenwood’s blistering shot from the edge of the box was blocked and Matt Hardman netted the rebound. Lytham man of the match Connor Jordan worked hard up front but was keeper Chester Duff, who made one outstanding save and it remained 1-0 at half-time. Jordan Willder was a threat down the left in the second half for YMCA, who equalised when Conah Bishop pounced on a loose ball in the box. They took the lead moments later when Bishop got on the end of Willder’s free-kick to the far post. Zak Royle went close to an equaliser and Jordan’s strike was cleared off the line. Matt McGreehin and new boy Ryan Wor-
thington also went close for Lytham, while Cameron Stubbs and Russell Townsend were notable for YMCA. Fleetwood Town 2 St Annes 3 BOTH teams battled hard in a ferocious wind and Fleetwood took the lead with a longrange strike by Oliver Roe. St Annes’ efforts were awarded when Hari Chan headed home a corner. The visitors pushed on and Reece Duffy scored with a superb diving header before setting up the third for Scott Holt. In the second half, a second Fleetwood goal by Josh Robinson set up an exciting finale but man of the match Ryan Pearson marshalled the St Annes defence. Foxhall 1 South Shore 9 JACK Williams celebrated his 50th goal of the season and progressed to 54 with five goals for title-chasing Shore. Foxhall started well and deservedly took the lead through Wolfenden. They almost doubled their lead only for a combination of post and keeper Lee Squires to keep the ball out. But once Williams equalised, Shore began to find their form and the 50-goal man gave them a half-time lead after fine work by Sam Appleton. Substitute Connor Walsh made it 3-1 with a long-range gem before Ryan Darvill scored twice, his second a superb strike from outside the box. Williams scored three more, his fifth from a fine ball through ball by Josh Kay, who completed the scoring from a tight angle. Poulton 0 BJFF A 0 WITH a pitch more suitable for mudwrestling and a wind better suited for kiteflying, this was never going to be a classic. Poulton defended well against the elements in the first half and then found the BJFF keeper in top form in the second. One goalmouth scramble almost produced a winner for the visitors, though man of the match Reece Crossley was solid for Poulton. FC Rangers 2 AFC Blackpool 1 RANGERS recorded a third successive win but this was a fine match which could have gone either way. AFC had the early chances as Thomas Young, Taylor Clews and Luke Schrieber all went close, but Rangers took the lead when Dean Kerr was put through by Nathan Reid and fired into the roof of the net. AFC equalised just before half-time with a penalty by their man of the match Luke Capstick. Both sides had chances to win it in the second half but it was substitute Eddie Fitton who did so with a curling shot into the top right corner. Fleetwood Gym 5 Staining 1 BOTH sides battled the biting wind and Gym led 4-0 at half-time. Staining’s second half improvement was rewarded with a Francis Dela Cruz goal. Nuttall and McLardle both scored twice for Gym, with Doherty also on target.

Wyre Juniors 6 Clifton Rangers 0 THE strong wind could not prevent Wyre recording a convincing win. Facing the elements in the first half, Wyre keeper Billy Jenkinson dealt with a couple of long-range efforts and the deadlock was broken on 17 minutes when Harley Singleton fired across goal and Alex Ward turned the ball in. In the second half, Nathan Haslam powered a header home from a free-kick by Sam Morley, whose next one two minutes later flew straight in. Skilful lobs by Joseph Fairhurst and Singleton followed in quick succession to make it five, and Matthew Brooke-Naylor pounced on a Fairhurst through ball to complete the scoring.

Hurst’s a hero at Arnold TOM Hurst was named player of the tournament as he helped Kirkham Grammar School to triumph in Arnold School’s fourth annual Under-15 Sevens.
Kirkham and the hosts both won three matches out of four in group A as ten teams battled it out. KGS qualified for the semi-finals as runners-up after beating Stonyhurst College (48-7), Bury Grammar (31-19) and Arnold (35-5), suffering their only defeat against group winners St Mary’s, Crosby 12-5. But Arnold missed out on the main semi-finals on points difference despite a 48-5 win over Stonyhurst. King Edward & Queen Mary School qualified from the other group. The semi-final against Merchant Taylors brought a 35-12 win for KGS to secure a rematch with St Mary’s, who were too strong for KEQMS in the other semi . In the final, KGS avenged their earlier defeat by beating St Mary’s 15-5 with tries by Adam Whalley and Sam Hall. Arnold had to settle for the plate competition, reaching the final with a 22-0 win over Bolton School only to see a 21-0 lead slip against Liverpool College, who won 24-21. ■ KIRKHAM won the Birkenhead School Sevens, having been beaten finalists last year, while Arnold won the plate competition. KGS won their group games against Adams GS (38-5), Merchant Taylors (40-0), Arnold (61-0) and Caldy Grange (40-5). Captain Jonathan Edwards, Kieran Brookes and James Moncrieff were outstanding in the 40-5 quarter-final win over St Ambrose School. Tries by Daniel Bibby and Kieran Marmion secured a 31-14 win over Stonyhurst to set up a repeat of last year’s final against Sedbergh School. Edwards was again in top form, although Sedbergh pulled level after trailing 17-5 at half-time. A length-ofthe field try by Tommy Banks in the last minute clinched a 22-17 victory for KGS. Arnold beat Adam’s Grammar (127) and Merchant Taylors (20-19) to win
