Rugby

Ben homes in on an England spot LIVING ON Blackpool Road, just a drop-kick away from the Woodlands home of Fylde RFC, it is hardly surprising that Ben Perkins took an interest in rugby. But it takes special talent to make the progress in the 15-a-side game that Year 11 schoolboy Ben has.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION: Ben Perkins (in action below)

The sparkling centre has been selected for an England Development Squad meeting on Friday week – taking him a step closer to gaining selection to represent England in a series of Easter internationals. Ben is certainly being put to the test at the moment – following the England trials over the weekend at Moseley RFC, he has come straight back to exams at Arnold School. He earned his England chance after impressing for the North of England 16 group – and scoring a try in their thumping victory over the Lancashire 18 group. Over the three-day England trial in Birmingham, Ben played for the North against London/South East and the Midlands. The results may not have gone the North’s way – London/SE winning by five tries to three and Midlands by three to two – but it is individual performances which matter and Ben returned home to Ansdell satisfied enough. “It went quite well overall. I was happier with my performance in the second game and scored a try.” Ben has since received a letter inviting him to next week’s meeting ... though England selection is still not guaranteed. Arnold rugby coach Mark Evans added: “Ben had a fine match against the Midlands and worked hard to prove to the selectors just how good he is. “He scored from just outside the 22 and nearly got another with an impressive 50metre run down the right wing. Defensively Ben impressed with some eye-catching tack-

les and three or four turnovers in the tackle.” Between the two matches came a day of training on Saturday as the weekend tested the players’ determination to succeed. The final 40 will be selected from the 100 who attended. The reward that would make all the effort worthwhile is a place in the England squad to face France, Italy and Wales over Easter. A secondary squad, England A, will also be selected from the trials and they too have an international tournament to look forward to. Besides playing for his school, Ben is also a Fylde Under-16 player, though with all his commitments he is yet to play for the club this season. As for becoming a rugby union professional once his schooldays are over, Ben isn’t looking too far ahead.

Proud

“I definitely want to carry on playing but it’s too early to think about a rugby career. “I just feel it is an honour to be selected for the England trials and the most important think at the moment is that I am enjoying playing.” Arnold director of sport Robbie Jones said: “We are all extremely proud with what Ben has achieved. “To say that he has worked hard would be an understatement and it is fantastic to see such a driven, well motivated and ambitious young rugby player performing so well. “The last Arnold rugby player to represent the North of England just a few years ago was flying winger Oliver Brennand, who now plays for the Fylde first team so Ben’s achievements are extremely impressive.” ■ ARNOLD Under-15A captain and hooker Jacob Nickson has been selected for the Lancashire squad and will be joined by teammate James Aird as the county side take on Cardiff and North Wales next month.

DANIEL BIBBY: In North training squad

Northern honours for Kirkham pair KIRKHAM Grammar School also had two first XV players in the North of England training squad: Daniel Bibby and James Hesketh both played in both games and were not the only KGS pupils in representative action recently. Kieran Marmion has been training with the Ireland U18 AER squad, while Jonathan Edwards and Tommy Banks have been selected for the English Independent School Barbarians. Ironically, KGS winger Stephen Hamilton repre-

Fleetwood U17 22 Caldy 22 FLEETWOOD converted a 10-point deficit into a sevenpoint lead only to be denied victory by a late Caldy try. A sluggish start enabled the visitors to score in the opening five minutes. With the wind against them, Fleetwood withstood further pressure as as Danny Maher, Adam Dawson and Henry Turner all TOM defended well. Fleetwood began to find their rhythm as half-backs Tom Evans and Joel Reynolds provided good service for flying centres Tom Speed and Kris Phillips. Evans started the move which resulted in Maher sending winger Jamie Railton in at the corner for a try. But Fleetwood soon found themsleves on the defensive again as a try and a penalty by the visitors late in the half made it 15-5, despite quality tackling by captain James

Cameron and fellow packmen James Evans and Tom Hird. Fleetwood introduced fresh legs and second rower Ben Ruddlesdin made his presence felt with some crunching hits. The home side took their turn to apply pressure and pulled level as Evans landed a EVANS Tom penalty and converted a try scored by prop Jack Foden from the scrumbase. Man of the match Cameron inspired Fleetwood, who took the lead when Tom Evans sent Reynolds through for a try and added the goal. However, late Caldy pressure resulted in a try and the conversion tied the scores. Fleetwood squad: Bedford, Birks, Cameron, Cleary, Cowie, Dawson, J Evans, T Evans, Hird, Foden, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Railton, Reynolds, Riley, Ruddlesdin, Speed, Turner, Walters, Webster, White.

Fleetwood U11 12 Liverpool Collegiate 26 FLEETWOOD dusted off the Christmas cobwebs but had to defend strongly in the first half. Even so, they conceded tries at either end of the half and trailed 12-0 at the interval. Fleetwood tore into their opponents after the break and hit back with a Charlie Wilcock try. And their pressure paid off when they forced an error from which Josh Pearce scored, with John Chadwick adding the equalising goal. However, Collegiate hit back with two tries and there was no way back for Fleetwood despite Oliver Banister’s outstanding display. Fleetwood squad: Ethan O’Hara, Charlie Wilcock, Harry Swatton, John Chadwick, James Torkington, Joshua Pearce, Danny Todd, Oliver Banister, Henry Walsh, Alex Myers, Henry Stelfox, Joe Kirten, John Bate, James Palmer Dodds, David Wright.

sented Scottish Exiles U18s against the Barbarians. Matthew Spedding has played for Lancashire Under-18s and earned a North trial. Callum Bennett and Will Morecombe have been playing for North Wales Under-18s. The junior county squads change regularly but KGS trio Josh Keay, James Coulthard and Alex Lo have all played for North Lancashire Under16s, whil Sam Hall has been a regular in the full county squad at under-15 level.

Scorpions are caughtnapping Blackpool Scorpions U14 16 Crosfield Cobras 36 THE Warrington side took full advantage of Scorpions’ slow start with two quick tries. The home side hit back when Thomas Downing, George Higgins and Joe Phelps sent captain Franky Campbell between the sticks, Joe Phelps converting. Despite man of the match Jordan Curtis leading Scorps forward, Crosfield broke from a scrum to score their third try and make it 16-6 at halftime. Scorpions defended solidly after the break but Crosfield put the game beyond them in a 10-minute purple patch. The home side never let their heads drop and were rewarded with fine tries by Higgins and Curtis. Jordan Tierney converted the second of these from wide on the left to cap a fine kicking display, while Downing and Oliver Winter were also outstanding.

Runners crack country code NO school ran away with the first Fylde and Wyre Coast Cross Country Championships, but Kirkham Grammar School came away with the best winning haul.

Kirkham GS runners Richard Morrell and Henry Cameron

Kirkham won three of the six team prizes on offer and two of the six individual awards at the secondary schools’ event, though all 11 competing schools gave a good account of themselves. This cross country extravaganza at Stanley Park is not really new – it is an annual fixture on the schools athletics calendar but this was the first organised by the Fylde and Wyre Schools Sports Partnership. It meant that only schools

WINNING TRIO (from left): Lauren Gowland, Molly Betmead and Sam Lamb in the partnership took part, with those which come under the Blackpool education authority not involved. The participating schools were Arnold, Baines, Cardinal Allen, Carr Hill, Fleet-

wood, Hodgson, Kirkham Grammar, Lytham, Millfield, St Aidan’s and St Bede’s. And there was more at stake than local prestige, with the winners and other outstanding performers

earning the right to represent Fylde and Wyre in the Lancashire Championships next month. The children were split into three age groups, with a tougher course for the older competitors. In the girls’ categories, two of the three winners represented St Aidan’s, while Arnold could claim individual and team success at Year 7. Kirkham won the other two team prizes. Among the boys, the team prizes were spread between Arnold, Hodgson and Kirkham, who also took two of the individual prizes. Lytham claimed the other. ■ The full results are printed below.

My how you’ve grown, Gav THE young players of Lytham Juniors probably all dream of scoring in the FA Cup. One of their old boys has come close to fulfilling that goal, by hitting the target in the Scottish equivalent. Gavin Malin scored for amateur side Spartans in a Scottish Cup fourth round tie against Airdrie last weekend. And by a freak coincidence, there was another former Lytham junior playing for the opposition, Joe Cardle. Malin, a former Lytham St Annes High School pupil, scored for the third round running but could not save his side from a 2-1 defeat against full-time opponents. Gavin is pictured in action for Spartans against Airdrie and (inset) as a Lytham Under-12s player in 2001.

UNDER-11 YMCA 3 South Shore 0 A COLD blustery wind made it difficult for both teams but YMCA adapted well to create several early chances. They took the lead in the 15th minute with a superb solo goal by Sam Warburton, who rounded four defenders before firing home. The visitors continued to battle hard but YMCA doubled their lead late in the first half when they won a penalty for a foul just inside the box and Lewis Thom fired into the roof of the net. Despite a strengthening wind, YMCA put the issue beyond doubt when Jordan Milligan cut in from the right and planted a low shot into the far corner. James Corbett shone throughout. Clifton Rangers 1 Lytham Juniors 8 MATTY O’Reilly grabbed a hat-trick as Lytham defied the blustery conditions. Isaac Bonfiglio and Alex Thomas both got two and Andrew Sanderson completed the scoring. Wright netted the Clifton consolation. There were also impressive performances from Cameron Ray and Ethan Warren. Layton Juniors 4 Blackpool Rangers Blues 5 RANGERS survived a strong second half fightback by Layton to take the points. The visitors were two up early on but Layton found their feet and hit back with a 25-yard drive from Jamayne Rodoway. Layton had a goal disallowed and Rangers capitalised to the full with three

more goals, two of them penalties, to lead 5-1 at halftime. Donnelly and Cooper scored two apiece, with Willis also on target. Layton regrouped and came back strongly with the wind in their favour. Rodoway blasted home his second from 20 yards and Webster further reduced the deficit from Lee’s flick. Substitute Kinsella’s superb goal from the edge of the box made it 5-4 with three minutes to go but the equaliser eluded Layton. St Annes 3 BJFF 0 ST ANNES emerged winners of this close-fought contest thanks to two goals from in-form striker Chris Pipe and one from Dan Taggar. Phillip Mayler the man of the match, while Robert Bradley and Nathan Price also deserve special mention.

UNDER-12 South Shore 1YMCA 1 THESE title contenders staged a superb match at Marton’s Co-op Club, where a heavy pitch could not prevent an end-to-end contest. The home side started brightly, with Steve Higgins flying down the right, but YMCA defended strongly and Chester Duff ’s handling was excellent throughout. Higgins saw an effort cleared off the line after one fine save, while Joe Brown was outstanding in the Shore midfield. Willder had the best two chances for YMCA in a goalless first half, while Carl Kennedy also had a shot well saved by impressive keeper Lee Squires. The outstanding Kennedy

moved up into the midfield for the second half as substitutes Oliver Moore and Russell Townsend made an impact for YMCA, who broke the deadlock when Willder’s run resulted in Atchison having a shot parried and Townsend firing home. Shore dug deep and Josh Kay was denied by Duff as James Rowley marshalled the YMCA defence well. The equaliser came three minute from time, when Jack Williams raced away from the defenders to strike a beautiful shot into the far corner. The drama was not quite over as Sam Appleton put his body on the line to block a goalbound shot by YMCA.

Fleetwood Town 0 Poulton 4 POULTON gave their one of their best performances of the season at King George’s. With the wind blowing across the pitch, they quickly took the lead through Tom Morrison and Tom Ardron made it two five minutes later. Man of the match Sam Willan poked home the third and Morrison’s second, from an accurate clearance by keeper Andrew Sheffield, made it 4-0 at the break. The visitors continued to play fine football in difficult conditions, with Philip Allen, Matty Stewart and Bob Brooks also notable. BJFF 3 Lytham Juniors 1 BJFF got on top early on and went 2-0 up in the first half. Midfielders Harry Greenwood and Ryan Robinson started to pass impressively for Lytham but Bispham defended solidly until half-time. Lytham came out fighting but Matt Hardman and Connor Jordan could not hit the target after surging runs. A third BJ goal clinched their victory – their scorers

were Savage, Hindle and Brownwood. Lytham did pull one back when winger Zak Royle put Brandon Matthews through. Defender James Carty was their man of the match.

AFC Blackpool 7 Fleetwood Gym 1 AFC quickly got on top as Taylor Clews tested the Gym keeper before opening the scoring. Two more followed in quick succession from Callan Roberts, who completed a firsthalf hat-trick to make it 4-0 at the break. Thomas Young and Clews had efforts disallowed but there was no denying Roberts, who added two more to take his tally to five and Blackpool’s to six. Fleetwood pulled one back through Atkins, though Jordan Harvey and Oliver Greenwood both went close for AFC before Luke Capstick completed the scoring with a 25-yard left-footer right on the final whistle. Defender Nathan Webster was man of the match. Staining 2 Wyre Juniors 9 WYRE repeated their sevengoal winning margin from this season’s corresponding home fixture, though Staining held them to 3-2 at half-time thanks to two fine strikes by Sean Jagger. The visitors soon settled in to their fluent passing style despite the difficult conditions and took the lead after six minutes, when Joseph Fairhurst fired into the corner from the edge of the area, after a good Alex Ward lay-off. Wyre extended their lead when Thomas Minns followed up a Ward shot to score. Jagger netted his first but Wyre restored their two-goal cushion when Ward capped a fine performance by scoring from Harley Singleton’s neat pass.

Jagger’s second looked to have set up an intriguing second half only for Wyre to make the most of the elements and take control. Two Singleton screamers after good build-up play from Ward and Nathan Haslam put them back in control. Minns charged down a clearance to fire his second into the roof of the net. Fairhurst got a second too from Minns’ neat pass and Haslam took his goal well from a corner by Singleton, whose hat-trick goal rounded off the win.

FC Rangers 2 Kirkham Jnrs 6 JACK Stainton got the ball rolling for Kirkham after only two minutes, adding a second before Dec Cartwright made it 3-0 at half-time. Further goals followed from Kieran Leaman and man of the match Bradley Wilson before Stainton completed his hattrick for the pizza division leaders. Shreeve and Bramhall netted Rangers’ second-half strikes. UNDER-13 Clifton Rangers 10 South Shore 2 CLIFTON remain unbeaten after two goals apiece from David Morrell and Sam Heany, and a Tom Adams strike made it 5-0 at the break. Heany’s second brace took his tally to four and there was a second for Adams. Jamie Smith and Ash Moreau completed Clifton’s scoring before a spirited late fightback by Shore brought two goals for Harry Caton. Fleetwood Gym 1 Lytham 13 LYTHAM proved too strong in all departments for a courageous Fleetwood. Josh Harrision scored four, while there were hat-tricks for

Joe Holdsworth and Maxwell Reid. Jack Dudgeon’s double and a Chay Currie goal completed the scoring. Conor Cuthbertson led by example and there were energetic performances from Ali Harper and Jonny Marsden. Fancett scored the Gym consolation. UNDER-14 Poulton 6 Staining 1 EX-STAINING player Adam Stephenson returned to haunt his old club with five goals in this Hogan Cup tie. The visitors competed well in the first half, which ended with Poulton 2-0 ahead. Stephenson added two more before Talbot’s goal gave Staining a glimmer of hope with 20 minutes remaining. They had chances to further reduce the deficit before Stephenson completed his nap hand and Rawcliffe rounded off the scoring. Blackpool Rangers 4 St Annes 5 THIS thrilling Hogan Cup firstround tie was edged by the visitors after extra-time. St Annes made the most of wind advantage in the first half to lead 3-0 at the break through Gavin Annets (2) and a Harrison Ball tap-in. They had to defend valiantly after the break – and Matthew Hanson was a rock – but Rangers hit back with three goals of their own to force extra-time, despite some fine saves from Callum Binks. St Annes regained the lead with a hat-trick goal from their man of the match Annets, then Mathew Hartley gave them a two-goal cushion. Joshua Lacey battled hard for St Annes and Rangers set up an exciting finish by scoring with five minutes to go. Gibson

netted two for Rangers, whose other scorers were Lynch and Calland. Foxhall 0 YMCA 3 YMCA overcame a hard-working Foxhall side at blustery Fisher’s Field. The first half was goalless, though Robbie Hunter had two good efforts saved by the Foxhall keeper and Ben Proctor had a chance cleared off the line. But playing against the wind in the second half YMCA’s passing game came together and Keil Fieldhouse broke the deadlock with a close-range finish from a corner. Ryan Allan struck the second and Ryan Riley converted Proctor’s pass to put the game beyond Foxhall. YMCA keeper Alex Cameron gave an impeccable display. Lytham 16 Warton Typhoons 0 LYTHAM gave an outstanding display of passing and movement on a very soft pitch. Nathan Frodsham led the way with six goals, while there were hat-tricks for Mitch White, Sam Lamb and Jack Ward. Chris Churchman was also on target. Keeper Adam Fahy made one outstanding double save to preserve the clean sheet, while Sam Webster, Charlie GoldieGalloway also impressed and Leroy McGregor and Matt Fox were solid in defence. AFC Blackpool 1 Thornton 4 AFC competed well despite injury forcing brave Matthew King to go in goal for most of the game. He kept his goal intact until the half-hour mark, when Thornton scored the only goal of the half from a free-kick. Thornton came out strongly for the second half, scoring three more before Aaron

Flynn’s strike flew into the top corner for AFC. Fraser scored two, while Sherry and Schofield were also on target for Thornton, while Bunseedhun, Tebbutt, Hargreaves and Smith all impressed for AFC. UNDER-16 Foxhall 2 YMCA 0 FOXHALL were deserving winners of this Hogan Cup firstround tie with a goal in each half. Sam Slack and Evan Taylor defended well but YMCA struggled to find their usual rhythm. Luke Rawcliffe fired over before Foxhall took the lead after 20 minutes, when Nathan Campbell volleyed into the top corner. Foxhall continued to press to press with the wind behind them after half-time. The YMCA defence dealt with a series of corners before Jordan Meehan sealed the victory with a 35-yard free-kick. Sammi Azzuz also caused YMCA problems with his mazy runs down the left. Lytham 0 Spirit ofYouth 3 THE Hogan Cup holders made an exit from this year’s tournament and were well beaten by Spirit. Spirit had plenty of possession in the first 20 minutes but found Lytham keeper Fergus Kent in top form to take his side’s man of the match award. Bobby Gunn shot narrowly over the bar with a 20-yard freekick for Lytham but Spirit netted twice by half-time. The third goal five minutes after the restart, a header from a corner, ended the contest. Their scorers were Barkhuizen, Duggan and McGough. Jack Errington volleyed just over for Lytham, and Josh Miller and Tommy Smith also had chances for the home side.

FOOTBALL EXTRA Fleetwood win in battle of the sixes Fleetwood Girls U14 13 Westbury 1 SIX-SHOOTERS Em McCarthy and Rebecca Harper both scored a double hat-trick in this dominant display as Fleetwood maintained their 100 per cent record. This was Fleetwood’s first game since early November but they were anything but rusty as the scoreline suggests. However, the match began on a sad note, with a minute’s silence in memory of stalwart supporter Babs Winton. The girls also wore special shirts in tribute to Babs. Fleetwood were quickly into their stride and opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Megan Brown was impeded by the keeper. The home side soon took control, passing well and giving Westbury the runaround. And the second goal soon followed when captain McCarthy threaded the ball through for Harper to slot home.

Dangerous

The dangerous McCarthy scored the third as Sarah Fay, Loz Fail and Bex Lowe controlled the midfield. Fleetwood did squander several chances and Westbury rallied, though home keeper Lottie Walsh commanded her penalty area. Lottie also pulled off a fine save from a shot which looked destined for the top left corner. But there was no way back for Westbury by half-time, with Fleetwood 7-0 up. Harper, who took the player of the match award, and McCarthy added more goals after the break but their monopoly of the scoring was broken by a Steph Massie screamer. Westbury managed a late consolation goal but this could not take the shine off an accomplished performance. LAST-GASP GLORY: Sasha Wozniak

Ace Sasha doubles up in cup YMCA Girls Under-14 3 Woodbank 2 SASHA Wozniak was the two-goal star as YMCA won through to the next round of the North Valley Cup – but they needed a goal in the very last minute of extra-time to clinch this thrilling encounter. In difficult, blustery conditions at Seafield Road, the game remained goalless until the closing minute of the first half, when Samantha Ball put YMCA ahead with a stunning drive from 15 yards that went in off the underside of the bar. Woodbank equalised midway through the second half only for YMCA to regain the lead through Wozniak’s first five minutes later. However, within two minutes Woodbank were back on terms with a goal on the counter-attack. The scores remained level until the closing minute of extra-time, when Wozniak latched on to a long through ball and fired home from the edge of the box to secure a dramatic late victory.
