School of the week: Brookfield

A whole Lotto fun in the Lakes SPORTY students at Brookfield School feel as though they have won the Lottery ... literally.

The special school in Poulton received a £9,900 Lottery grant to boost PE and sports.

The school has decided to focus on adventurous activities and will use its windfall for visits to outdoor centres around Lancashire and Cumbria. They visited the Bendrigg centre, near Kendal, for a fun-filled week, during which they enjoyed a full range of team-building activities. Although the snow-covered landscape resembled a Christmas card, the wintry weather did not prevent the children enjoying abseiling, archery, caving and canoeing, and also making the most of the indoor climbing wall.

Compete

Brookfield is a school for 11 to 16-year-olds with behavioural and emotional problems, and includes children from Blackpool and Fleetwood. The pupils also have opportunities to learn boxing at Kirkham Gym and to compete in five-aside football at Thornton Sports Centre. Brookfield students have been working towards a Junior Sports Leader Award by helping lead sports with Red Marsh School students. Bendrigg is a registered charity providing adventure holidays for disadvantaged children.

CAVE MEN: Underground adventures for the Brookfield students

Warton are the kings of the court A WARTON badminton club is rocketing to racketing glory. Warton Juniors dominated the Blackpool Schools competitions for under-12s and under-14s, with club members winning eight of the nine events. And seven of the nine runners-up at the Palatine tournaments also came from Warton JBC. They enjoyed a clean sweep of the under-14 events, in which singles champion Oliver Hives and clubmate Thomas Yates, who was runnerup, joined forces to win the boys’ doubles. Hives claimed his third title in the mixed doubles with Serena Hindle. Again the final was an allWarton affair, with Thomas Yates and Laura Kennedy the runners-up. Hindle claimed her second title in the girls’ doubles, partnering Lucy Mitchell who had beaten her in the singles final.

The doubles runners-up were another Warton pair, Laura Kennedy and Sarah Salthouse.

Boys’ under-12 singles winner Matt Wood teamed up with runnerup Dominic Youles to win

the doubles, beating two more of their clubmates, Michael Trelfa and Sam Yates, in the final.

In the same age category, girls’ runner-up Nicola Brown teamed up with singles winner Katie Kinder (of Commonwealth BC) to claim the doubles. All these players will represent Blackpool in the Lancashire Schools Championships next month.

Scorpions make it a big finish Blackpool Scorpions RL U16 30 Golborne Parkside 8 SCORPIONS ended the league campaign on a high with three tries in each half. The early stages were closely contested, with the visitors controlling the ball better only for the Scorpions defence to scramble well. The Wigan side crossed for the opening try but Blackpool quickly levelled as man of the match Zach Ward raced in at the corner from dummy-half after a powerful run by Danny Percival. Alert full-back Joe Bullock then scored from a quick tap penalty and Anthony Livingstone’s touchline conversion made it 10-4. This had been increased to 16-4 at half-time when Taylor Ramsden crashed over in the corner. Ward’s outstanding workrate inspired the Scorpions in defence but still Golborne scored first in the second half. However, the 12-point margin was restored when prop Omar Frederick barged over. Livingstone dived over for the next try after wook work by Matthew Egan, Liam Wilkinson and Ramsden, who was stopped just short. Frederick rounded off the scoring with a rampaging run direct from a 20-metre restart and Livingstone finished with three goals.

Scorpions team: Joe Bullock, Christian Cornall, Taylor Ramsden, Adam Constantine, James Gilfoyle, Liam Wilkinson, Anthony Livingstone, Harold Carr, Matthew Egan, Omar Frederick, Zach Ward, Josh Shearman, Danny Percival, Shaun Wignall

Fleetwood go down fighting Stockport 19 Fleetwood RU U17 7 FLEETWOOD refused to surrender at fourth-placed Stockport in their penultimate league game of the season. The visitors were pinned back in the opening quarter but resisted with great determination, James Cameron leading the way. Tom Hird, Danny Maher and Jack Foden were also outstanding in the pack, but after the sin-binning of second rower Ben Ruddlesdin, Stockport finally broke through to score the only try of the half. Trailing 5-0 at the interval, Fleetwood’s passing improved as Tom Speed, Tom Cleary and Tom Evans all caught the eye. However, Stockport’s extra size and power began to tell and by midpoint of the second half they had stretched their lead to 19-0. But then Fleetwood’s never-saydie attitude shone through and centre Kris Phillips stormed clear for a length-of-the-field consolation try, converted by Evans. Fleetwood squad: Cameron, Cleary, Cowie, J Evans, T Evans, Hird, Foden, Macdonald-Hall, Kemp, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Preston, Railton, Ruddlesdin, Speed, Teale, Walters, Webster.

Rossall stars homing in on national title

ROSSALL School’s U14 Lancashire hockey champions have moved two steps closer to national glory.

Emphatic victories over Cheshire champs Altrincham GS and Cumbria’s St Annes, Windermere saw the Fleetwood boys add the North-West title and earn a place in the national quarter-finals at Belle Vue in three weeks.

They became the first Lancashire school in five years to take the regional crown after following their 2-1 win over Altrincham with a 5-0 success against St Annes in the final, thanks to goals by Luke Williams, England international Louis Weir, Harley Taylor, Stephen Kane and Jack Morrison.

The under-14s will face the North-East champions in Manchester and are bidding to become the first northern school to take the national title. Nine Rossall players have earned Lancashire county honours this season, with a further 11 invited for trials. Coach Emmett said: “We have a really exceptional generation of hockey players, who have beaten older opponents in the UK and abroad and are ready to challenge for national honours.” The first XI have also made an impact in the Lancashire U18 League, beating Bury GS 8-0 and Liverpool College 5-1.

MELLON AND COD ON THE MENU AT PRIMARY SCHOOLS: Fleetwood Town gave the pupils a treat at Charles Saer (left) and Chaucer schools

Mellon and co spread Town gospel

FLEETWOOD Town FC manager Micky Mellon went back to school when he visited two community primaries. Club mascot Captain Cod accompanied the the team boss to Chaucer and Charles Saer schools, where he answered pupils’ questions about the club and his playing career, which included a spell with Blackpool. Mellon said: “Our job is to make Fleetwood Town a big club and community work is a massive part of that.

“The football club is there for these children to come and watch or to join in with the Juniors or Saturday Morning Club. “Their energy is fabulous. Just seeing the reaction was electric and we need to tap into that energy.” David Mitchell, headteacher at Charles Saer, said: “There is a lot happening between the school and the club. “We will be starting a girls’ lunchtime football club after half-term

and an after-school club which will run well into the summer and beyond. “A lot of our pupils are also members of the club’s teams, and visits like this give the children targets to aim for.” The club’s ongoing programme in schools is co-ordinated by Town’s community development officer Chris Garrett. EVENT OF THE WEEK Millfield’s Karting kings

DAYTONA DAZZLERS: Our pictures show the Millfield team at the British School Karting Championship at Daytona Racing in Manchester. The daring drivers (pictured left, left to right) are Ray Satchell, Daniel Edwards, Thomas Mawson, Luke Mewett, Luke Scott and Matthew Chalk

It’s go, go, go for Karting MILLFIELD can boast the Fylde’s fastest school pupils on four wheels.

Six speedy students at Millfield Science and Performing Arts College did their Thornton Cleveleys school proud at the North West stage of the British Schools Karting Championship at Daytona Racing in Manchester. The Millfield teenagers, who were split into two teams of three, just missed out on a place in the national final after finishing fourth and fifth. Millfield, who missed out on qual-

ification by just four points, could boast the third-fastest racer in practice in Luke Scott. To gain their places in the Millfield teams, the pupils did not only have to demonstrate skill behind the wheel and plenty of nerve ... they needed to get their heads around some tricky maths problems too. Teacher and motorsport enthusiast Mark Kilmurray explained: “Because we had far more pupils interested than we had places available, we set up a maths challenge to decide who would take part.” The pupils were given equations

to work out, based on such relevant topics as speeds and engine capacities. It all added up to to a thrilling night out for Millfield boys Matthew Chalk, Daniel Edwards, Thomas Mawson, Leke Mewett, Ray Satchell and Scott. Each driver competed in two of the eight heats as the Millfield B team finished by 101 points and the A team on 98. Mr Kilmurray added: “These are not the sort of go-karts you see at the fair. This is the real thing with the full gear, and our competitiors can be proud of themselves.”

Upwardly mobile Thornton Cleveleys A second cup final for YMCA YMCA Under-18 3 Penwortham T 0 Having already won through to face Lammack in the Lancashire FA Cup final on Monday week, YMCA earned themselves a second cup final appearance in the LEP League Cup. They were always in control in their semifinal at Preston Sports Arena, breaking the deadlock with Scott Harries’ dipping 25yarder into the top corner after 25 minutes. It remained 10 at the break after Dan Hartley’s cross-shot

just eluded Max Rothwell at the far post. They doubled the lead on the hour, when substitute Nathan Ruddle’s first touch saw him cross for Harries to score his second. Pe n wo r t h a m tried to force their way back into the game but YMCA were always a threat on the break and Dec Walsh completed the scoring in stoppage time. The final against Euxton will be staged at Bamber Bridge on April 1.

THORNTON overtook their hosts in the Under-14 table with Sunday’s 3-1 win in St Annes, whose manager tipped them to climb higher yet.

Gracious home boss Steve Little tipped Thornton for a top-four finish after their impressive display against his depleted troops.

Injury-hit St Annes are struggling for players at present, with goalkeeper Cameron Hay playing as an outfielder at Blackpool Road North last weekend to give them a full complement. With St Annes at their strongest this had every chance of being a classic encounter, the sides having drawn 2-2 earlier in the season. Thornton started the day one place behind their hosts in seventh. But Thornton were able to take a grip on Sunday’s game from the start with two early goals. They added a third after half-time before late pressure by a bravely determined St Annes side was rewarded with a consolation goal. The visitors opened the scoring after barely five minutes, when debutant Connor Addison made the perfect start for his new club. The midfielder, recently recruited from Staining, showed what an asset he could be for Thornton by firing home from the edge of the box. The second soon followed and was another blistering strike – a free-kick steered into the top corner by John Fraser from 25-yards out. Mark Bone made it 3-0 midway through the second half, reacting quickest to a long

ball which bounced into the box. In an instant, Mark had the ball under control and prodded home. St Annes showed splendid team spirit to take the game to Thornton from that points, though their opponents were happy to consolidate by that point. The hard-earned consolation goal came from Harrison Ball, who took his chance well . Outstanding full-back Luke Borden instigated a fine passing move with a ball to striker Matthew Hartley. He in turn found Ball, who turned sharply to fire home.

Tightened

Hartley worked tirelessly up front and manager Little was pleased with the way his side tightened up at the back in the second half. Besides right-back Borden, the St Annes rearguard also benefited from the solid central defensive pairing of James Pendleton and Gavin Annetts. Thornton manager Steve Coulburn is delighted with his side’s form, even if he felt they could have scored a few more goals on Sunday. “We have a good run of games coming up and matches in hand on teams above us, so we still have plenty to play for,” he said. Among the things Thornton have to look forward to is a team tour to Amsterdam in May, when they will play in a twoday tournament. St Annes boss Little is also looking on bright side. He added: “We only had 10 players last week and lost 5-0 to Lytham, so it’s getting a little better. But I’m very pleased with the players we have and I couldn’t ask for more from them.”

PRIME MOVERS IN PRIMARY LEAGUE: Under-10 division one B action between Poulton Town and Layton Juniors (on the ball) in the Poulton Primary League at Wyre Civic Centre. Match details below; more back page

UNDER-11 Layton Juniors 4 St Annes 1 LAYTON got back to winning ways, with Alex Smith and Josh Griffiths causing all sorts of problems for the St Annes defence. It was Griffiths who opened the scoring after 10 minutes and man of the match Smith seized on Charlie Casey’s defence-splitting pass to round the keeper and double the lead. The dangerous Jamayne Rodoway won a penalty which he placed in the top right corner. It was four before half-time as Griffiths chipped his second after a fine move involving Nathan Kirk and Zak Gayton. St Annes pulled one back after the break through Fluss-Tramontano but this was a job well done by Layton, with Jasmine Singleton also outstanding. Kirkham 0YMCA 2 YMCA clinched their Hogan Cup semi-final spot against hosts unbeaten in the league. YMCA put the home defence under early pressure and took the lead in the 20th minute, when Owen Futter was brought down after a mazy run and Sam Warburton scored the penalty. Kirkham tested the YMCA defence but it remained 1-0 at half-time. The visitors continued to have the edge but were unable to add to their lead until the final 10 minutes, when Chris Clinch fired home from 12 yards after his initial shot was blocked.

YMCA 3 BJFF A 1 BOTH sides played well in an excellent first half. Despite a stream of quality crosses from the left by Jordan Willder, YMCA could not make the breakthrough until just before half-time, when a Conah Bishop corner was headed home by James Rowley. They stretched their lead after the break when Willder won a free-kick which was headed home by the impressive Rowley. Rowley’s hat-trick goal sealed the victory, with Cameron Stubbs and Matty Smith was also notable for YMCA. The industrious Harry Savage pulled one back for the visitors, with Casey Hindle, Matthew Hulme, Josh Brownwood and Elliot Hargreaves also outstanding.

Tommy Harrison and Futter were both notable in an excellent YMCA team performance. Fleetwood Town 0 Lytham 3 LYTHAM made the running in this Hogan Cup quarter-final and soon took the lead when Jack Tomes won a penalty which Harrison Openshaw converted. The visitors continued to press but it remined 1-0 at half-time. The openings eventually came and Openshaw crossed for Joe Seker who grab his first goal in Lytham colours. Andrew Sanderson pounced on a rebound to complete the scoring. Goalkeeper Charlie Rowlings was outstanding in a fine team performance. Wyre Juniors 2 Poulton 1 FIRST-HALF goals by Platt and McManus put Wyre Juniors in the driving seat in this Hogan Cup tie. An own goal from a Tom Blackhurst cross brought Poulton back into the game and it remained 2-1, with Poulton keeper Charlie Bellamy making amends for conceding a penalty by saving it. UNDER-12 Wyre Juniors 11 Fleetwood Gym 1 GYM battled bravely but Wyre were far too strong, opening the scoring after only three minutes when Matthew Brooke-Naylor converted Joseph Fairhurst’s neat pass. Gym equalised five minutes later when Atkins finished a fine one-touch move but Wyre were back in front on 11 minutes, when Nathan Haslam fired home. Two in two minutes shortly before the interval gave Wyre a half-time cushion as Brooke-Naylor lobbed the keeper, after good play by Thomas Minns, and then set up the fourth for Fairhurst. Wyre took control after the break as BrookeNaylor followed his hat-trick goal with a fourth after Joel Claxton’s header was saved. Alex Darlington scored two quickfire goals thanks to good passes by Fairhurst and Jake Jones. Fairhurst followed up his own blocked shot to score a second, then Jamie Peace headed home a cross by Sam Morley, who completed the scoring from edge of the box. FC Rangers 0 Warton 3 RANGERS lost influential midfielder Roy Tanner early one and were overrun by a fine Warton outfit who led 2-0 at half-time. The home side improved in the second half, Nathan Reid coming closest with a shot that was cleared off the line, but Warton added a late third goal to complete a deserved win. Their scorers were Carroll, Pettigrew and Pownall.

STAR MAN: Ash McGough of Fleetwood Town Under-15s Staining 0 Blackpool Rangers 8 BENCH led the way with four and Cholmondeley added two in this emphatic Rangers win. Staining improved after the break, with their man of the match award shared between keeper Jamie Jalil and the hard-working Francis de la Cruz. The other scorers were Sidley and Rimmer. Lytham 1 Fleetwood Town 2 FLEETWOOD came from behind to win this Hogan Cup-tie after the most dramatic of finales Matthew Hardman gave Lytham a first-half lead with a shot into the corner and it remained 1-0 at half-time despite chances at both ends. Fleetwood came out full of determination and drew level through Josh Robinson after good work from Ben Reader and Matt Chadwick. Josh Miller, Harry Greenwood and Ryan Robinson also went close for Lytham, with Tom Forster outstanding at the back. Then in the last minute, Town keeper Sam Jensen made a great one-on-one block and then saw Greenwood’s shot on the rebound cannon off his crossbar. Fleetwood went straight up the other end and Callum Ellis won a penalty which Robinson confidently smashed home.

Poulton 1 Kirkham 3 JACK Stainton’s goal put Kirkham on the way to a hard-fought Hogan Cup win. It was 3-0 at half-time thanks to goals by Declan Cartwright and Callum Fiddling, though stand-in goalkeeper Josh Payne made some splendid saves for 10-man Poulton. Oliver Hughes pulled one back for Poulton, whose man of the match was Sam Willan. Nathan Jones, Matt McCormick and man of the match Ritchie Hall kept things tight for Kirkham. Foxhall 1 South Shore 6 SHORE were outstanding in the first half of this Hogan Cup quarter-final. Josh Boyne opened the scoring in the first minute with a delightful chip. Stevie Higgins stormed down the right and crossed for Jack Williams to head the second. Shore’s slick passing soon saw Ryan Darvill fire home the third and Higgins made it 4-0 at half-time. Foxhall fought back strongly and Garner pulled one back midway through the second half. Williams and Boyne both added a second goal late one, with Alex Vowles-Bradley showing his flair at right-back for Shore. UNDER-13 Fleetwood Gym 1 South Shore 10 HARRY Caton opened the scoring for Shore and went on to complete a hat-trick in the second half. Jack Harrison also netted three and had a penalty well saved. GIRLS’ MATCHES

City stunned by Henderson free-kicks Blackpool FC Under-10 2 Mill Hill 0 BLACKPOOL kept their unbeaten run intact and denied Mill Hill revenge for their home defeat a fortnight earlier. The home side started brightly and Alisha Yarwood scored in the eighth and 17th minutes. Two excellent saves by Georgia Atherton ensured Mill Hill ended the half goalless, and more good goalkeeping and defending kept them at bay throughout the second period. Chyna Appleton was the man of the match, with Amy Sudworth also in fine form.

Manchester City 1 Blackpool FC Under-11 3 BLACKPOOL played some excellent football to win the first league meeting between these teams. Georgia Lambe cut through the

defence for an outstanding solo goal which separated the teams at half-time. As Blackpool pressed after the break, two Charlie Henderson freekicks sealed the win, one of them from halfway line, before City’s late consolation goal. Rebecca Shaw’s strong defending and forward runs earned her the player of the match award, while Megan Pope made some fine saves.

but again the equaliser eluded YMCA and Fleetwood pulled clear with two further goals, adding their sixth in late on. Blackpool FC Under-15 3 Bolton Wanderers 1 BLACKPOOL started slowly in this even contest but had their noses in front by half-time. They scored twice more in a much-improved second-half performance before Bolton pulled one back. Hard-working defender Ellie Whittaker was the player of the match.

Fleetwood Town Under-11 6 YMCA Under-11 2 YMCA took the lead after 10 minutes with a fine strike from Laurel North. However, the lead lasted only moments and Fleetwood soon went in front. Fleetwood stretched their lead to 3-1 shortly before half-time. Hannah Wright pulled one back

Manchester City 2 Blackpool FC Under-13 0 BLACKPOOL conceded after only two minutes and could not claw the goal back, despite creating numerous chances and claiming that one effort had crossed the line. Lucy Briggs was player of the match but every Blackpool player gave her all only for City’s late second to end their hopes.

Manchester United 4 Blackpool FC Under-16 1 BLACKPOOL trailed 3-0 at halftime but showed greater determination after the break, when Becky Preston pulled one back with a good solo effort. They had chances to cut the deficit further but United’s fourth sealed their victory, despite the best efforts of player of the match Beth Fisher.

Poulton 3 St Annes 1 ST ANNES fell behind after only two minutes against a Poulton side who were strong in all departments. Poulton had a two-goal cushion at half-time but St Annes’ second-half improvement was rewarded with a goal by their man of the match Jamie Manley. St Annes pressed hard for an equaliser only to concede a third. Linus Welsh scored two and Will Lockhart the other for the home side.

UNDER-14 YMCA 5 Fleetwood Town 0 YMCA maintained their 100 per cent league record with another solid display. Ben Proctor had a header cleared off the line and Robbie Hunter’s shot hit the crossbar before Liam Whitehead opened the scoring with a penalty. Ryan Allan’s two first-half goals were separated by a Ryan Riley strike, scored after a shot rebounded off the post, making it 4-0 at half-time. Whitehead doubled his tally with a second penalty. Lytham 7 PoultonYouth 1 LYTHAM’S passing skills were soon to the fore as midfielder Danny Scarlett opened the scoring with a sweet strike. Sam Lamb was also on target, with Sam Webster and Leroy McGregor excellent as well. Stephenson pulled one back for Poulton. Spirit ofYouth 4 AFC Blackpool 0 THE deadlock was not broken until midway through the second half, when O’Reilly’s fine free-kick found the bottom corner of the net. Larkin came off the bench to score twice and O’Reilly sealed the victory with his second. Kirkham 0 Foxhall 7 RYAN Lubimbi eventually opened the scoring after 15 frantic minutes and Josh Keen fired the second after an outstanding run by Marrkus Pemberton. Michael Perry scored next from Robbie Hulme’s fine cross and a penalty by man of the match James Ridge, after Keen had been fouled, made it four at half-time. Jack Wood scored the fifth, then fired the ball across goal for Michael Parry to apply the finishing touch for no.6. George Nicholls came out of goal to complete the scoring, though his opposite number Michael Aspinall was outstanding for Kirkham. UNDER-15 Fleetwood Town 3 St Annes 1 TOWN’S Dominic Amos and Mike McAlpine combined well to set up Steve Rankine for the opening goal after 10 minutes. LADS at Poulton Youth and St Annes in the under10 Poulton and District Primary League are literally inseparable.

Yet again there was nothing to split the two sides in what is believed to be the first Coulton Cup tie to go to a third replay in the league’s 37-year history. Rather than undertake a fifth meeting after a 2-2 aggregate, they plumped for penalties and St Annes won through to the quarter-finals after this first- round long player. Both the A and B games finished 1-1, with Morgan Walsh and Harry Balmer scoring for Poulton and Max Griffin and James Blackburn for St Annes. St Annes were awarded two penalties in quick succession shortly before the end of normal time, but had both saved before Poulton’s last-gasp equaliser forced the shootout. In the quarter-finals, Lytham Juniors Maroons progressed 5-2 on aggregate against Fleetwood Town. Maroons won the A game 4-1 through Declan Fisher (2), Jack Burgoyne and Carnan Dawson, with Daniel Roskell notching the consolation. Liam Walsh netted for Maroons and Jordan Burns for Town in the 1-1 B draw. South Shore stretched their lead at the top of division A to seven points with 3-1 and 2-0 wins at BJFF. Quaid Henderson got all three goals in the A game, where Harvey Poland
