Jumping for joy
SPRING is in the air, and pupils at Kirkham Pear Tree School has added some spring and bounce to its PE sessions.

The pupils are enjoying regular sessions of rebound therapy on the school trampoline.
Pear Tree School Kirkham is for pupils aged three to 19 with severe learning difficulties, some with associated physical and sensory impairments. The school has purchased its own trampoline, enabling its three trained rebound therapists to run the weekly sessions on site. Rebound provides an outstanding opportunity for allround exercise, involving movement and balance, and has become part of the curriculum at Kirkham Pear Tree.
Award
PE co-ordinator Paula McKee said: “Pupils love the rebound sessions and after only a few we have seen a remarkable difference in their abilities. The sessions also enhance and develop communication skills.” There is an award scheme associated with the rebound sessions, enabling all pupils to show achievement and progression. The pupils advance through a series of colour-coded grades, receiving a certificate for each. The school’s motto of “achieving the best we can in everything we do” certainly applies to the Rebound sessions at Kirkham Pear Tree, which has received both theSportsmark and Activemark accolades for sport in school.

HOSTS Blackpool Sixth Form College badminton team were unbeaten as they won the Red Rose mixed doubles, beating Runshaw College, Leyland, in a tense final. The line-up was Sian Meakin, Beki Holditch, Michael Cross, Brogan Fraser, Ryan Fuce and Stu-
art Marshfield. And one of the school’s outstanding sportswomen Danielle Bamber (right) has made her mark on the national stage. Lancashire U18s hockey captain has won through national trials to gain selection for the British Colleges women’s team.
Hunt is on for real sports
THE race is on to find Blackpool’s outstanding young sportsmen and women. Nominations are now welcome for this year’s prestigious Quayle Awards. The Blackpool Council awards have been presented since 1945, founded by Alderman John Robert Quayle. The awards are divided into two age categories: 14-21 and nine-13, and nominations from all sports are equally welcome. In the older age group, the Quayle Trophy will be presented to the outstanding individual who has achieved regional or national success. Two additional merit awards will also be presented. The exceptional person in the younger age group will receive the Quayle Shield, with two runners-up also honoured. Besides achievement, the awards also recognise commitment, sportsmanship and support of sport within the community. Blackpool Mayor, Coun Mary Smith, will present the awards at the Town Hall in June. Nomination forms, available by calling Blackpool Council on (01253) 478008, must be submitted by the end of the month.

The Kirkham Grammar School girl won both the 14-and-under and 16-and-under singles in the Next Generation Junior Open at the David Lloyd sports centre in Chorley. THERE are Panthers on the loose in Blackpool schools. But there’s no need to lock the classroom doors ... these are friendly big cats from the Blackpool Panthers RL club. Pupils from Bishpam and Collegiate Schools and Devonshire Primary have been invited to
the first Championship One home game of the season against Hunslets Hawks on Sunday. Pupils at the two high schools have enjoyed three weeks of coaching with visitors from the Panthers, led by development officer Nick Settle. And 20 pupils from Devonshire Primary
will to take part in a skills session before the big match at the club’s Woodlands home in Ansdell this weekend. Each pupil who takes part will be given free entry to the match with an accompanying adult. All other Devonshire pupils can obtain discount vouchers for the game from school.
AllSpars! Schools do Fylde proud LAST year’s success by Blackpool and Fylde primary schools in the SPAR Lancashire Youth Games has continued.
Ansdell Primary School have been crowned Lancashire gymastics champions in Hyndburn.
And Revoe Community Primary School have been presented with the Blackpool SPAR Star School of the Year Award for its active participation last year. The Lancashire Games is the county’s biggest youth sports event of the year and Ansdell won through to the finals by winning the Fylde tournament. Waterloo Primary represented Blackpool and Shakespeare Primary were Wyre’s representatives. Ansdell won the overall title at Hyndburn and had the the two outstanding performers in the indivdual event in Hannah Riley and Florence Meaney. The rest of the winning team, who finished ahead of Preston’s St Mary’s and St Andrew’s Primary and Haslingden Primary from Rossendale, were Lucy Bainbridge, Amber Dunn, Thomas Bailey-Shields and Daniel Cooper. The guest of honour in Hyndburn was Great Britain Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Craig Heap from Burnley. Blackpool’s representatives Waterloo may not have enjoyed the success of Ansdell but they enjoyed a great day, meeting Craig and the other special guests. ■ Revoe were presented with a shield and £700 worth of sports equipment from Surridge Sport for their achievements last year. The Grasmere Road school gained the highest number of points for participation in events at the Blackpool borough qualifying events last year.

The local competitions included Year 5/6 cricket, gymnastics, tag rugby, high-five netball and indoor athletics. Their £700 award was used towards netball and cricket kit. Last year’s head sports girl and head sports boy Shannon Greatrex and Jonathan Holt returned to Revoe for the award ceremony last Friday. More than 2,000 school pupils from 120 schools and colleges will contest this year’s SPAR Lancashire Youth Gamess. Qualifying heats for other events in the 2009 Games are taking place at venues across the borough in the next three months. The Lancashire Disability Youth Games will be held at Blackpool’s Stanley Park on June 30, with an estimated 800 people expected to attend. ■ ANSDELL Primary also enjoyed outstanding success in the North West floor and vault championships. They triumphed in the mixed category and will represent the region in the national finals in Stoke in May. Fleetwood U17 17 Ormskirk 37 FLEETWOOD always faced an uphill struggle in this Lancashire Cup quarter-final against visitors who had already beaten them heavily twice this season. An Ormskirk try in the opening five minutes was ominous but Fleetwood rallied as Kyle Bedford and Keiron Teale led the pack effort and the excellent Danny Maher crashed over. However, Ormskirk added four tries to lead 25-5 at halftime, despite fine defending from Kris Phillips and Tom Cleary. Matty Webster made some bone-crunching tackles and stand-off Steve Preston went close with a fine break before Bedford smashed over. More strong drives were rewarded with a Jack Foden try and the dangerous Tom Speed added the goal. Ormskirk were rattled and had a player sin-binned, though they did manage to score two more tries. Windermere 5 Fleetwood U11 19 WINDERMERE played well in their first competitive game, refusing to buckle after Fleetwood opened the scoring with Joshua Pearce’s converted try. John Chadwick added a second only for the Cumbrians to hit back with a try. Charlie Wilcock’s try, again converted by Pearce, sealed the win. Kirby Lonsdale 0 Fleetw’d U11 21 FLEETWOOD enjoyed a fine win over one of their bogey teams. Oliver Banister opened the scoring from a chargedown and John Chadwick converted. The hosts applied pressure but Fleetwood remained 7-0 up at half-time. The instruction to pass the ball out to the backs more was heeded and Danny Todd raced away for a great try. Joshua Pearce converted and scored the final try, followed by Chadwick’s second goal.

Blackpool FC Girls Under-10s 2 Bolton Community 0 BLACKPOOL took a while to adjust to their new formation but started to dominate as they got into their stride. Alisha Yarwood broke the deadlock with a fine solo goal from inside her own half and doubled the lead just before half-time. Blackpool could not convert their chances after the break but emerged comfortable winners, with Erin Croft the player of the match.
Thornton 1YMCA Under-11 7 YMCA missed some early chances before Ffion Sagar gave them an eighth-minute lead which was soon doubled by Laurel North. Thornton made it 2-1 at half-time but the twogoal margin was restored within a minute of the restart as North added a superb second.
Erin Menzies netted twice before recent signing Niamh Hendry and Hannah Wright completed the signing.

Fleetwood Town Under-11 2 Blue Star 3 FLEETWOOD entertained the cup finalists and had to defend strongly early on before breaking out for Lucy Johnson to force a fine save. Blue Star responded by hitting a post and it remained goalless at half-time, after Francesca Hearty had gone close for Fleetwood. The visitors took the lead soon after the restart, but Demi Leigh Devereaux equalised direct from a corner and then gave Town the lead from a 20-yard lob. Fleetwood couldn’t hang on and Blue Star scored twice in the last 15 minutes. Captain Anna Reynolds and Kelsey Hargreaves were outstanding.
Blackpool FC Girls Under-12 4 Preston NE 2 BLACKPOOL won through to the Lancashire Cup final after Preston went ahead midway through the first half. Resolute defending by Jess Schora and Marriella Hemmingway denied the visitors a second but then Blackpool upped the pace, with debutant Billy Davenport making an impact. Levi Felton’s effort grazed the post before Jess Dougherty equalised five minutes before halftime. And then Alix Reid slammed the ball into the roof of the net with the final kick of the half. Calling all keepers SEASIDERS centre of excellence goalkeeping coach Kyle Valentine is offering a free training day for budding keepers during the Easter holidays. Kyle, a former pro keeper with Bristol Rovers, is a full qualified coach who aims to run the event for up to 50 young keepers aged seven to 16. He explained: “I aim to offer the local keepers an insight into professional goalkeeping, with training in a fun and safe environment. It is a specialised position which requires specialised training.” Venue and times are yet to be finalised, and goalkeepers are initially asked to register their interest with Kyle by calling him on 07955 651551.

YMCA 2 Wyre Juniors 0 BOTTOM club Wyre put up a spirited and gutsy display against high-fliers YMCA. The hosts squandered a host of chances before Josh Clayton gave them an interval lead. YMCA remained on top and the points were sealed when Clayton notched his second. Sam Warburton was excellent for YMCA. Thornton 1 Lytham 4 LYTHAM quickly took the lead through Andrew Sanderson but Thornton were level by half-time with a Roe strike. Lytham took control after the restart as Sanderson restored their lead with a great strike, then won a penalty which he scored himself to complete his hat-trick. Jack Tomes coolly grabbed the fourth late on and then saw his last-minute shot shave the post. Jack Wood, Cameron Ray and Ethan Warren impressed in the Lytham defence and James Fletcher was superb in midfield. Foxhall 1 Poulton 0 FOXHALL edged this very close game with an early goal, when a good cross from James Dowling was met with a tidy finish by Jordan Ratcliff. Layton Juniors 2 St Annes 5 FIRST-HALF goals from Trafford Bretherton and Dan Tagger put St Annes in control of this Hogan Plate tie. Two quick Layton goals by Josh Griffiths and the Jamayne Rodoway made it 22 at half-time but St Annes hit back with three of their own. Top scorer Chris Pipe and Isaac FlussTramontano, with two fantastic strikes from outside the box, were the scorers. Luke Gill was St Annes’ man of the match, with Nathan Price and George Kay also outstanding, as was Layton keeper Henry Turner.

Blackpool Rangers 3 AFC Blackpool 3 AFC won this Hogan Plate thriller on penalties after a great fightback. They were 3-0 down at half-time to strikes by Rimmer, Bench and an own goal, but then hit back in style as goals from Leon Platt, Callan Roberts and Luke Schrieber forced extra-time. Extra-time produced chances at both ends but no more goals and AFC won the shootout 6-5. Nathan Sayers was the man of the match. St Annes 4 Staining 1 THIS Hogan Plate first-round tie turned out to be a tense affair and Staining deservedly took the lead from a corner on five minutes, when Jay Austin’s fine cross dropped for Finn Docherty to score a cracker. St Annes hit back as Tom Bradley and Hari Chan linked up well down the left,

and Jordan Tongue slid in for the equaliser. The ever-dangerous Bradley slotted the second following good work from Chan and it remained 2-1 at half-time. St Annes could not take their chances until the tireless Lewis Hodge netted the third and a great finish from Jake Grime settled the tie. William Neilson, Anthony Severyn and man of the match Axel Cartmel all had good games playing out of position. Jamie Boylen was solid in a fine Staining effort. BJFF Blues 0 Spirit of Youth 6 SPIRIT’S five-man midfield proved creative and strong as Jac Birch and Jack Richardson both went close before Shane Delaney lobbed the keeper for the opener, his first for the club. The excellent Richardson scored next and Callum Willoughby headed home a Dane White corner to make it 3-0 at halftime. Reece Lancashire’s good work led to two goals for Adam Matthews before Birch’s 25-yard wonderstrike completed the scoring. Will Abbotts and Curtis Burke were denied by the keeper in a fine team display. Kirkham 5 FC Rangers 1 KIRKHAM started brightly and Declan Cartwright gave them an early lead before Jack Stainton made it 2-0 at half-time. FC Rangers pulled one back when Gommersall’s fine through ball was converted in style by Ben Campbell. Stainton’s second and further goals from the head of Charlie Cottam and Elliot Smith’s shot from 18 yards completed a fine performance by the leaders, whose man of the match was Bradley Wilson. This great team performance keeps Kirkham at the top of the league. Man of the match Bradley Wilson. Campbell was outstanding for Rangers. Lytham 2 Fleetwood Town 1 LYTHAM won this nailbiting game, in which Matt Hardman was a threat up the wings. Home keeper Cori Ward was put to the test twice before Ryan Robinson set up man of the match Kenzi Bailey, whose perfect strike gave Lytham a half-time lead. Fleetwood fought back and equalised in the dying moments through Robinson after Ellis’ shot had hit the post. As time ran out, Harry Greenwood had an effort saved and a corner was cleared off the line before Matt McGreehin put Ryan Worthington in the clear for a victory. AGSA 1 Fleetwood Town Under-14 9 TOWN made a welcome return to winning ways in sunny Accrington as Rebecca Harper scored four. Harper beat the final defender to open the scoring as Lauren Fail began to dominate the midfield.
Rebecca Lowe and Cath Robinson were also in dazzling form, while Steph Massie was a colossus at the back. Lowe launched the move which led to the second goal as Meg Brown set up the outstanding Em McCarthy. AGSA pulled one back from a corner but Megan Brown slotted the third wide of the keeper. Harper sealed her hat-trick by half-time with a beautiful curled shot into the top corner followed by a fine strike from Fail’s pass. After the break, McCarthy found the top corner from the edge of the box and Harper completed her tally before substitutes Sarah Fay and Em Hanson rounded off the scoring.

Poulton were forced into changes and Sam Bennett made his debut up front, but it was Robert Brooks who scored the only goal in the first half. BJFF applied pressure after the break but man of the match Andrew Sheffield made some top saves. At the other end, an excellent double save denied Brooks a second.

Blackpool Rangers 2 St Annes 4 ST ANNES started strongly and pinned Rangers back for a good 20 minutes only to concede a breakaway goal. Mitch Bolus soon equalised and it remained 1-1 at half-time. St Annes again came out fighting and soon Adam Chapman gave them the lead before Daniel Clarkson added the third. Rangers hit back with a second – their scorers were Staff and Daniels – but Bolus sealed victory with his second goal. Man of the match was Joe Welch. Foxhall 5 Thornton 2 THE league leaders gave a fine 100 per cent display after an own goal put them in front. Thornton equalised before Bradley Diamond made it 2-1 to Foxhall at half-time. The visitors again drew level before the home side pulled away with goals from Kurt Willoughby, Joe Darnell and Josh Smith. The Thornton scorers were Khambay and Rowley. AFC Blackpool 1 Warton T 0 AFC scored the only goal after barely a minute as Daryl Loy’s long ball was met by Brad Jordan, who expertly lobbed the keeper. It was enough to return AFC to the top as Jonny Broadstock proved unbeatable in goal. Connor Eastwood went close to a second for AFC and Jordan hit the woodwork in a fine match.

Blackpool Rangers 2 YMCA 5 YMCA secured a hard-earned victory against a well-organised Rangers side. Despite twice taking the lead in the first half through Sean Ayrton and a well-taken Ryan Riley volley, the visitors conceded two headed goals by Lynch and Heppenstall to change ends all square. YMCA had the better of the second half, with three more Riley goals taking his tally to four. Ryan Allan hit the bar and Alex Cameron pulled off two fine secondhalf saves.

Despite falling behind in the first five minutes and then conceding a second, Foxhall’s Jacko Hulme pulled one back after an excellent run and cross by Liam Crossley. Sam Webster, Ben Proctor and keeper Adam Fahy also impressed for St Annes, whose third sealed the win. Keeper George Nicholls was outstanding for Foxhall, who defended well and went close to a second goal through Robbie Hulme and Jack Wood.

But Lammack scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including a lastminute equaliser, though Olivia Turnbull was outstanding throughout.

St Annes 3 Clifton Rangers 1 ST ANNES were outstanding in the first half, with Ryan Rogers tireless up front, and he squared the ball for Kieran Norris to open the scoring on 25 minutes. Man of the match wing-back Jamie Abbey doubled the lead by half-time, hammering a 25-yard free-kick into the roof of the net. Kurtis Willder made it three with a first-time shot from outside the box and Clifton pulled one back through Horrocks with five minutes to go. Stuart Moffatt and Conor Rogers were solid in defence, while Robbie Hawes also impressed for St Annes.

ST ANNES missed the chance to go joint top of the under-10 league when managing only a share of the points at Clifton Rangers. Leaders South Shore didn’t have a game but St Annes couldn’t capitalise as they came out second best in the A game, where Rangers romped to a 5-1 win with goals from Daniel Holt (2), George Byrne, Ryan Walsh and Jordan Stimpson. Jack Carroll’s goal wasn’t enough for Rangers B, who lost 3-1. With several games in hand on the top two, third-placed Poulton Youth are well in contention for the title. Goals by Kieran Chell, Aidan Heath and James Robinson gave their A team a 3-0 win over Thornton Cleveleys but the B game was much closer. Cameron Peters got both in the 2-1 outcome, with Jack Davies replying. Lytham Junior Blues, who are just above the relegation places, won the A game with BJFF 1-0 thanks to James Travis’ goal. The B game was goalless. Division B leaders Lytham Juniors Maroons maintained their 100 per cent record. At Spirit Of Youth, they won the A game 7-1 through Carnan Dawson (3), Declan Fisher, Jack Burgoyne, Matthew Graffin and Connor Slade. Owen Atkinson got the reply. Joe Gregory, Matthew Shacklock and Liam Walsh all scored two apiece in the 6-0 B win.

Ryan White bagged seven goals from YMCA B in a 10-0 win over Warton Typhoons. Other scorers were Eddie Nisbet (2) and Ryan Hadley. Laurence Joyner (2) and Joel Raines earned YM’s A team a 3-0 win. Following a goalless draw in the A game, FC Rangers beat Blackpool Rangers 2-0 in the B game through Scott Green and Michael Flynn. A double strike by Jack Taylor helped battling Layton Juniors to a 2-1 A win over AFC Blackpool, for whom Max Innes scored. Blackpool won the B game 6-0 though Ben Fairclough (3), Lewis Middleton (2) and Liam Colmer. Wyre Juniors beat Fleetwood Gym 2-0 (Callum Cruickshank, Bradley Wainwright) and 4-0 (Mark Entwistle 2, Thomas Lindsay, James Ormson). Poulton Town moved off the bottom of the table after sharing the points with Staining, who won the A game 5-1 through Sam Harrison (2), Steven Hodgkinson (2) and Jai Roberts with William Donegani replying. Oliver Hey and Jose Vitoriano gave Poulton B a 2-0 win.

Kirkham are in seventh heaven ... again KIRKHAM Grammar School retained the Fylde National Sevens title at the Woodlands on Sunday.
They were in sparkling form in the group games, averaging 40 points per game as Kieran Marmion, Daniel Bibby and Tommy Banks were all in top form. KGS beat Silcoates (43-7), Rodyr (4514), Solihull (45-22) and St David’s (55-7).
The last 16 game with Manchester Grammar School was close until just after half-time, with Jonathan Edwards and Sean Condon applying the pressure as KGS eased to a 31-12 victory. The quarter-final against Llanwit Major was won comfortably 41-7, with James Moncrieff, Wasim Riley and Tom Sanders playing well. They dominated the semi-final against Warwick School, with Edwards and Condon creating havoc, allowing Kieran Marmion, Tommy Banks and Daniel Bibby to run in the tries. Player of the tournament Marmion continued this form into the final against Robert Clack School from London, with Tommy Banks defending well. The 40-5 victory sealed KGS’s third trophy of the sevens season, following success in the Birkenhead School and North of England events. The KGS second team lost to the Silcoates School senior side in the plate competition following a victory over Rossall and group defeats by Arnold, Oaklands and Manchester GS.

Top value seconds! KIRKHAM Grammar School won the Lancashire Hockey tournament, for second XIs at Stanley Park. They recovered from a slow start, losing to Queen Mary school 3-0, before Lizzie Whittle’s goal sealed a 1-0 victory over local rivals Arnold. Captain Whittle opened the scoring in the rematch against Queen Mary, in which KGS reversed the earlier scoreline. Alex Fell scored a fine goal before Whittle sealed victory with her third of the tournament.
A goalless draw in their settled match with Arnold sealed the title, leaving KGS top of the round-robin with seven points. The victorious squad was: Lizzie Whittle, Charlotte Airey, Louise Walker, Max Galley, Lucy Anson, Sarah Hatch, Catherine Moss, Antonia Price, Hannah Fountain, Grace O'Flaherty, Kerry Emmett, Charlotte Corkhill, Alex Fell, Lucy Knowles, Katie Fisher, Francesca Hughes and Jenny Miller.
