School of the week: Rossall

SETTLING SCORES: A game of Ross hockey – which has a reputation for being one of the most physical around – gets underway

Sticking with tradition

THE Fylde’s oldest independent school, the 164-year-old Rossall School in Fleetwood, are recreating a piece of history this term to keep alive a unique sport played nowhere else in the world. From now until April, pupils at Rossall will go head to head and stick to stick to play 'Ross Hockey' a noholds-barred amalgam of hockey and rugby, which is played on the beach at low tide, using a hazel stick and wooden ball ... and very few rules. Handlebar moustaches, Long Johns and sturdy boots were once the order

Pupils recreate unique mix of hockey and rugby without any rules!

of the day, but when teams cross sticks in honour of the School’s founding fathers who invented this extremely tough beach-based version of two of the country's most popular school sports, they do so with a nod to current health and safety regulations. In the 19th century, Ross Hockey gave pupils at the then all boys’ school a real opportunity to settle a few old scores with their schoolmasters and the game earned a reputation for being one of the most physical

around. And, even today, Ross Hockey is not for the faint-hearted, although every precaution is taken nowadays to avoid injuries. As a spectacle it doesn’t disappoint, and with a rulebook that states “there are no rules” this piece of sporting eccentricity brings to life the flavour of the typical English public schools of the Victorian era. However, the sport is as popular

now as it was in Queen Victoria’s reign and old boys from around the world have been known to fly in specially to play in the matches, just for the adrenaline rush. Rossall School director of sport, Katie Lee said: “It was only by playing this sport that I realised why it has survived as a tradition for a century and a half. “It has to be experienced to fully appreciate it. And it is one of the more popular of the school’s traditions

… probably because they get to whack their teachers fairly with hard wooden sticks!” Games are played each week running through to the Easter holiday. The under-14s are looking forward to contesting the quarter-finals of the national schools’ championship in Manchester next month, having been crowned Lancashire and North-West champions. They are unbeaten this season, as are the under-13s and under-15s, the latter also kings of the county.

Rugby

Tag format a perfect means to get hooked TAG rugby continues to grow at Blackpool RU as the perfect means of introducing young children to the game. A team of Blackpool six-toeight year olds emerged unbeaten from their latest matches against Burnley. They showed great skills in the first game, digging their heels in to win 6-4. They also defended and at-

tacked well in the rematch, which ended 3-3 and included a fine opening try by James Hunt after Jordan Wallis’ dummying had caught the defence out.

Welcoming

Jamie Thirlaway was the man of the match. Blackpool are looking forward to welcoming West Park St Helens to Mossom Park this Sunday morning.

Stanley show fighting spirit BLOOD AND THUNDER: Ross hockey action in full swing

Blackpool Stanley RL Under-14 14 Latchford 36 STANLEY produced their best rugby of the season in the second half to hit back from 30-0 down. They restricted the visitors to a single try after the break, with Tyler Davies, Declan Aylen and Declan Lomas strong in defence and Phil O’Hagan outstanding on his debut. Alex Caygill,Joe Taylor and James Bancroft all scored the first tries for the club, with Aylen converting one.

A stroke of luck for outstanding talents TWO of Blackpool’s outstanding young swimmers have been boosted by a timely splash of cash.

Sarah and Anthony Lucas from Grange Park have received a £500 Sporting Chance grant from Asda to boost their development.

Both attend Collegiate School and swim for the Newton Hall club as well as Lancashire’s elite Gallica group. Sarah, 15, won a freestyle gold and bronze in the national championships in Sheffield last year, when she also claimed a gold in the open water championships, held on a Notting-

ham boating lake. This success earned Sarah her first Great Britain call-up, finishing second in an international event in Toulouse, France. Not only a freestyle specialist, Sarah actually achieved the qualifying times for nine national finals at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge but restricted herself to three.

Promote

Anthony, 13, is hoping to emulate the success of his elder sister, having also won a bronze at Sheffield in the backstroke. Asda have linked up with SportsAid to promote emerging talent form across the UK. Asda’s Mark Coleman said: “We hope to add to Sarah and Anthony’s grant with as much fundraising as we can over the year to help them with travel, equipment and training costs, and give them as much encouragement as we can.”

Hopes Lights and action! pinned on cup for KGS KIRKHAM Grammar School were beaten 20-0 in rugby union’s under-16 Floodlit Cup by a strong Manchester GS side. KGS conceded a first-minute try and a penalty shortly before half-time, and they could not turn possession into points despite strong runs by George Naylor, Matthew Ellis and Alex Lo.

Late

Anish Chandreskar went closest for Kirkham in the second half, when he was held up over the tryline. Manchester added two more late tries, although Ben Jones, Bobby Garlington and Philip Brook defended strngly. The Kirkham under-16s are still going strong in the Lancashire Cup and face Lancaster GS in the semi-finals.

PRESTON Pride finished the stronger to win an outstanding match72-57 against Blackpool Lights Under-14s at Stanley Park. Blackpool were well beaten by Pride last time they met, but their improvement was clear as they led after the third quarter. And half of the Blackpool squad is aged under-12. There were excellent debuts for top scorers Lewis Jones (22 points) and Callum Howey (eight). Having trailed 20-15 after the first quarter, Blackpool finished the second strongly to trail 38-35 as Will Shaw came to the fore. By the next break Blackpool had completely turned the tables, as Fraser Thorpe, Jason Selas and Conagh Bootle caught the eye to clinch a 51-49 lead. And even though Pride hit back to restrict Blackpool to six points in the closing quarter, Lights coach David Shaw was pleased with a performance which bodes well for the play-offs.

TAKING AIM: Blackpool’s Lewis Jones hits the net

Future panthers on the prowl? EARLIER this month we told you about the rugby league coaching session conducted by Blackpool Pan Well, the children soon got the opportunity to put their skills into practice and impress the spectators at the the Panthers’ Ansdell home on Sunday, when the team started their season with victory over Keighley in the Northern Rail Cup. Twenty of the Roseacre pupils enjoyed a 45minute session with the club’s community development officer Nick Settle before kick-off and were cheered back on to the pitch at half-time. The children also gained free admission to the game with their parents and had the opportunity for photographs with the club’s mascot. Nick now plans to contact other schools offering similar training sessions at school and on matchdays.

STRIKING GOLD: James Davies and Tash Gardner

Young guns victorious on Scots mission

BLACKPOOL Wyre & Fylde Athletic Club members returned south with 10 medals, including four golds, from the Scottish Junior Open Indoor Championships in Glasgow. The star of the meeting among the 12strong Blackpool contingent at Kelvin Hall was Tash Gardner from Wesham, who struck a double sprint gold in the under-13 60m (8.39 secs) and 200m (27.69). Carr Hill pupil Tash was even quicker in the 60m heats, setting a new club record of 8.30 and is now ranked UK no.1 in her age group over both distances, though she is still only 11. James Davies won the u17 long jump with a personal best of 6.62m. The club’s final gold medal went to Clifton schoolgirl Chloe Needham, who cleared 2.25m in the under-15 pole vault. Chloe then went on to claim a creditable seventh place in the shot (7.57m). Kirkham flyer Lucy Mansfield was again in fine form, taking silver in the u17 200m with 25.89. Lucy also finished fifth place in the 60m (8.03), in which her training partner and Carr Hill schoolmate Katy Wyper took silver in a club record 7.98. Katy followed this up with bronze in the long jump (4.97m). Lytham’s Sophie Riley put last year’s injuries firmly behind her to take the bronze medal in the under-15 200m (26.32) before claiming another bronze in the 60m sprint with 8.14, a personal best and another club record. The club’s final medal was won by Freckleton’s Bethany Towers, whose 9.16 in the u17 60m was also a club record, besides earning Bethany a personal best and a bronze. The unluckiest athlete not to win a medal was Alicia Johnston, who competed in the u17 300m final having been given the impression it was only a semi. Despite running a personal best of 43.59, Alicia eased up and settled for fourth place in the belief that she needed only to qualify.

OTHER BWF RESULTS IN GLASGOW: Under-13: Katrina Kelly (200m, fourth, 33.12; 60m, fifth, 9.80); Claudia Fiddler (200m, second in heat, 28.23; 60m, third in heat, 8.55). Under-15: Kassidy Knight (60m, sixth, 8.50; 200m, third in heat, 27.90; long jump, 15th, 4.20m); Brittany Shaw (60m, fourth, 8.69; 200m, third in heat, 29.25).

MATCH OF THE WEEK: South Shore Under-15 v AFC Blackpool

Fleetwood Town 0 Kirkham 1 BOTH sides had early chances but the breakthrough came when Connor McNeillie smashed the ball home. In the second half, James Boardman ran the Kirkham midfield and keeper Matty Guthrie was outstanding. Niall White, Matty Neil, Jackson Ashworth and Sam Howarth all did their bit to keep Kirkham at the top of the league. Blackpool Rangers Whites 2 Layton Juniors 1 LAYTON had early chances, with Jamayne Rodoway threatening, but Rangers hit them with two quick goals before half-time through Stanton and Harris,. Substitute David Webster made an immediate impact for Layton, supplying a fine pass for Rodoway to hold off the defence and pull a goal back. Alex Murphy was denied an equaliser by a fine save, with keeper Henry Turner, Charlie Casey and Jasmine Singleton all outstanding for Layton. Fleetwood Gym 1 St Annes 4 ST ANNES got back to winning ways but had to come back from behind. Barkworth scored for Gym, who would have gone two up but for a superb penalty save by Lewis Baker Williams. Chris Pipe equalised before half-time and St Annes took control after the break with two quick goals by Isaac Fluss Tramontano and Trafford Bretherton. Both sides missed penalties, St Annes’ hitting the bar and Fleetwood’s struck even higher, before man of the match Dan Taggar sealed victory with a wonder shot from the right. Nathan Price gave a great captain’s performance for the winners.

Under-12

Fleetwood Town 3 Lytham 2 AN ENTHRALLING second half saw Fleetwood recover from a 2-0 down to take the points with three goals in the final 15 minutes. Kieran Anderton went closest for the hosts in a goalless first half but his chip over the keeper from Callum Ellis’ pass went agonisingly wide. Billy McLean and Matt Hardman went close for Lytham, while Harry Greenwood linked up well with their man of the match Ryan Robinson in midfield. Greenwood put Lytham ahead with a clean shot and Robinson doubled the lead before McLean and Hardman went close again. Josh Robinson launched the Town comeback with a shot into the corner after linking up with Danny Haines. Goal poacher Callum Ellis nipped in to level matters and then won the penalty which Matthew Chadwick converted. Josh Morrisey was Fleetwood’s man of the match. YMCA 0 BJFF A 0 THIS was a serious setback to YMCA’s title hopes against a

THORNTON RULE AT CORONATION: Action from Thornton Cleveleys Under-13s’ (white shorts) win at Kirkham’ Coronation Road (also bottom right) side they had beaten in the Hogan Cup the previous week. Defender James Rowley was outstanding for YMCA, while stand-in keepers Aiden Atchison and Bradley Garner were both solid. Jack Crawford was also notable. St Annes 1 South Shore 2 ST ANNES defied the formbook to give the leaders a real test but two Williams strikes sealed the points. Trailing 1-0 at half-time, St Annes’ efforts were rewarded when substitute Scott Holt finished a fine passing move with the equaliser. The visitors grabbed the winner in the dying moments.

Under-13

Wyre Juniors 1 Clifton Rangers 15 CLIFTON continued their excellent form as Sam Heany led the way with four goals in the first half. Two by Ash Moreau, and strikes by Jack Birtwistle, Tom Adams and Ross Thornley made it nine by half-time. There was a second-half hat-trick by Dom Brown, while Adams completed his and Axel Simms finished off the scoring. Jones scored the Wyre consolation. Fleetwood Gym 4 South Shore 12 SHORE overcame Gym for the second time in a week, with Jack Harrison scoring the first of his four within two minutes. Harry Caton netted four too as the visitors led 7-1 at the break. Jamie Thomson and Michal Miotk also scored for Shore, whose dozen was completed by two own goals. A spirited fightback saw Fleetwood score three in the

final 15 minutes. Kelly (2), Benson and Allen were their scorers. St Annes 0 Spirit ofYouth 3 ST ANNES started well but soon came under pressure from a determined Spirit team and were lucky to go in at half-time level. Spirit scored just after the break and took total control as Crowe netted two and Holley the other. Mitch Bolus was outstanding at the back for the home side.

Under-14

South Shore 0 Lytham 3 HARD-WORKING Shore can take heart from a battling performance in which they matched Lytham for long periods. Dan Witham was outstanding in a hit-and-miss Lytham display, in which scorer Matty Fox also impressed. Sam Lamb and Nathan Frodsham were the other scorers and Adam Fahy made two fine first-half saves. Foxhall 0YMCA 3 YMCA’S excellent form continued against hard-working opponents. The visitors could not break the deadlock in the first half, despite Ryan Allan, Jordan Bishop and Ryan Riley all going close, while Alex Cameron pulled off a fine save. Ryan Allan’s neat finish opened the scoring and he went on to complete a hattrick, his second from an accurate Riley cross. AFC Blackpool 0 Annes 1 ST ANNES were given a tough test by a determined AFC side. Scott Little and Gavin Annetts controlled the visitors’ defence in a goalless first half.

Matthew Hartley went closest to a first-half goal when he struck the bar the AFC bar. St Annes man of the match Joshua Lacey came to the fore after the break and Hartley scored the winner from Luke Borden’s through ball. Callum Binks made some fine saves to protect the lead. AFC pushed hard but could not convert their chances despite fine performances by midfielders Luke Hargreaves, Danny Tebbutt and Ben Chambers. Fleetwood Town 3 Staining 3 THE spoils were shared in this entertaining game, in which Lockhart gave Staining the lead. The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges, with Ashford marshalling their defence, and Briscoe and Talbot linking up well with scorer Lockhart down the left. Fleetwood were level by half-time and went 3-1 up after the restart through Stoney, Swarbrick and Pirie. Some superb Kilpatrick saves kept Staining in the game until Luke pulled one back and Briscoe equalised with a late penalty. Warton 0 Spirit ofYouth 5 SPIRIT soon got on top as goals from Larkin, Hewitt-Giles and a stunning volley from Finlayson made it 3-0 at half-time. Two McPheely completed the scoring in a very pleasing performance from the visitors.

Under-15

AFC Blackpool 5 Clifton Rangers 0 RYAN Wilson hit the crossbar in the third minute before Brad Jordan scored for AFC after an assist from Daryl Loy. Loy went close himself before Jordan doubled the lead after 10 minutes. Harrison Briggs blasted home Sam Mason’s cross and it remained 3-0 at half-time, with Clifton keeper Billie Curden in fine form. Clifton held their own in the sec-

ond half until the final 10 minutes, when Josh Johnson fired home and Jordan completed his hat-trick following up a shot by the unlucky Wilson, who hit the bar again. Tim Dunn also went close for AFC. Kirkham 2 Fleetwood Town 1 KIRKHAM edged victory after Town had drawn level in the second half. Dominic Amos had given Fleetwood hope, after Mike McAlpine’s jinking run had ended with a shot which rebounded off a post, only for Kirkham to net the winner with 15 minutes left. Gornall and Potter were the Kirkham scorers.

Under-16

Blackpool Rangers 1 Lytham 3 LYTHAM struggled to play flowing football until a sweeping move ended with impressive midfielder Bobby Gunn converting Tommy Smith’s cross from the right. Rangers equalised 10 minutes later through Phillips but Smith soon netted his second and it remained 2-1 at half-time. Lytham upped their game after the break as Nat Houghton, Josh Miller, Smith, Joel Cummings and Jack Errington, who hit the bar twice, all went close before Cummings completed the scoring 10 minutes from time. Jake Leatham was Lytham’s man of the match. Wyre Juniors (Preesall) 3YMCA 2 YMCA had plenty of chances at Thornton and took a fifth-minute lead when Josh Verenakis latched on to Harry Hobson’s pass. Wyre were level four minutes later only for Callum Chandler to head YMCA back in front on 15 minutes and it remained 2-1 at halftime. Wyre scored twice inside five minutes to clinch victory in the second half, their goals coming from Bradshaw, Robinson and Attwater. Jonathan Houston was notable for YMCA.

MAX Griffin spared St Annes yet another replay in the under-10 Coulton Cup with the only goal of the two quarter-final games against FC Rangers. After four attempts to overcome Poulton Youth in the previous round, St Annes looked set for a further stalemate until Griffin struck late in the B game following a 0-0 outcome to the A contest. In the league, Jordan Burns’ hat-trick gave Fleetwood Town a 3-0 A win over Kirkham and the B team followed that with a 3-1 win (Stuart Mellor 2, Daniel Roskill). A double strike by Arthur Spencer wasn’t enough for Thornton A to win as Foxhall earned a 22 draw with goals from Jake Barrett and Matthew Sheridan. Foxhall B followed that by winning 3-1 through Joshua Tinsley (2) and Jake Lavery. Josh Fleetwood replied. Two goals apiece from George Burn and Daniel Holt earned Clifton Rangers a 4-1 A win over Lytham Junior Blues, whose scorer was Kyle McCullough. Four goals from Jordan Stimpson helped Rangers B to a 5-1 win. The other came from Joseph Smith, with Jack Saunders replying. Lytham Junior Maroons have one hand on

the division B championship trophy after collecting maximum points again without conceding a goal at Wyre Juniors. Carnan Dawson scored all three for the A team and Matthew Shacklock (2), Matthew Graffin and Liam Walsh were the B scorers. Maroons have a 16point lead on YMCA, who opened up a 14-point gap on third-placed FC Rangers by beating Layton Boys 4-2 and 8-1. Laurence Joyner (2), Ryan Hadley and Joe Seear scored in the 4-2 A win, with Matthew Bebbington and Jack Taylor replying, and Ryan White got five for the B team. Joel Raines (2) and Kyle Macauley were also on target and Jordan Thomson scored for Layton. AFC Blackpool ran up two 3-0 wins over Fleetwood Gym. Ben Fairclough (2) and Liam Colmer scored for the A team and Morgan Shand, Daniel Turner and Ceejay Atkins-Thomas for the B team. Lowly Staining were 3-0 and 3-2 winners over Warton Typhoons. Steven Hodgkinson, Josh Rainey and Stephen Kennedy scored for the A team and Lewis Gannon, Sam Rainey and Connor Creegan for the B team. Ryan Fletcher got both for Warton B.

Girls’ Football / Fleetwood Town

Hickson seals derby delight for Blackpool Blackpool Under-11 2 Preston NE 1 BLACKPOOL were understrength for their first home game since November but stand-in keeper Georgia Raines, normally a midfielder, pulled off some great saves to be named player of the match. They hit the post three times but broke the deadlock when Georgia Lambe scored from Jordan Dixon’s pass. Emma Hickson doubled the lead as Blackpool remain unbeaten, despite Preston’s late consolation. Blackpool Under-10 1 Manchester United 2 UNITED came back from behind to avenge their defeat at the Cliff in this hard-fought game. Both teams had chances before player of the match Amy Sudworth scored with a stunning shot into the top corner after 16 minutes. United equalised with a penalty after half-time and Alisha Yarwood went close for Blackpool before the visitors netted the winner. Mossley Hill 5 Blackpool Under-16 0 THREE goals in the first half left Blackpool on the back foot and a penalty miss did not help. They came more into the game after half-time but conceded twice more, though Charlotte Walker was outstanding in goal. Blackpool Under-15 1 Manchester City 4 BLACKPOOL were out of luck in this county cup semi-final. City were excellent in defence although Lauren Oatley scored a fine goal. Fleetwood Town Under-11 1 Lammack 2 FLEETWOOD keeper Gabi Aston

made some good early saves, while at the other end Anna Reynolds went close, producing a fine fingertip save with a shot from outside the box. Lammack scored midway through the half and it remained 1-0 at half-time, despite Lucy Johnson and Demi-Leigh Devereaux going close. Kelsey Hargreaves again worked hard in midfield and made a goal line clearance to keep Fleetwood in the game. Francesca Hearty and Yasmin McLaren were strong in defence but could not prevent the all-important second goal. Madeline Lauder and Charlotte Brooks made an impact off the bench and Devereaux pulled one back iwth an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Fleetwood Town Under-14 1 Lammack 8 Player of the match Rebecca Lowe’s coolly-taken equaliser briefly gave Fleetwood hope but Lammack are one of the league’s strongest sides. It was 5-1 at half-time, despite outstanding midfield play by Lauren Fail and impressive displays from Steph Massie, Victoria Lowe and Jess Smith . In the second half, Cath Robinson made an impact, Lottie Walsh pulled off some fine saves and Sasha Gray made a promising debut. Accrington 0YMCA Under-14 8 YMCA took control early with goals by Steph Vickers and Millie Gallagher but could only manage one more before half-time through Sasha Wozniak. Accrington battled bravely but YMCA continued to dominate and the hard-working Vickers completed an excellent hat-trick. Wozniak netted a second, with Sam Booth and Lauren Gallagher also on target.

Having a ball in all weathers

THE wintry cold snap may have resulted in one or two of Fleetwood Town’s matches being postponed since Christmas, but the eager children at their Saturday Morning Club continued to enjoy their weekly football action despite the elements.

Fleetwood Town’s Saturday coaching sessions for boys and girls usually take place at Memorial Park, but can be switched to the all-weather pitches and sport hall at Fleetwood Sports College during the winter. The club is not only encouraging young players but young coaches too. One of the qualified FA Level One coaches at the Saturday Morning Club is 17year-old Matty Mecklenburgh, who plays for the club’s Under-18s. Matty said: “I really enjoy the coaching. My studies take up a great deal of time and the coaching is an ideal way to relax. “I plan the sessions during the week and put what I learned on the FA course into practice on Saturdays. “There is nothing better than teaching someone a move or a drill and seeing him or her take that skill into a game. It shows they are listening and learning. “The social side is important too as they learn to bond as a team. And parents like to see their children using up plenty of energy in a safe environment.” The club grew in popularity so quickly that it became necessary to provide two sessions, one for children from reception to school Year 3 age (10-11am) and one for Years 4-6 (11-12). New members must be accompanied by a parent/guardian when they join. There is a signing-on fee of £10, followed by a charge of £3.50 per session. For further information contact the club’s community development officer Chris Garrett on 07760 363543
