School of the week: Beacon Hill
Beacon’s shining example
THE future is certainly bright for sport at Beacon Hill High School, with a full range of activities for pupils to enjoy.
ABOVE (from left): Under-14 and U16 basketball team members; front row, Kimberley Cross, Sherelle Bartholomew, Caitlin Maddocks; back row, Aleisha Mitchell, Sophie Rouse, Hannah Jacques, Dawn Rawlins, Rachel Leech and Rebecca Blayney. BELOW: Jordan Porter (13) and Leah Brown (12) try out the rowing machine with community sports coach Nicola Cropper
The under-16 boys’ basketball team have not been beaten this year, while hockey is getting into the full swing alongside such ever-popular sports as football, netball and rugby league. The Warbreck Hill Road school always gives a good account of itself in inter-school competitions – such as yesterday’s indoor athletics at the Blackpool Sports Centre (more of which in next week’s AllStars) – but pupils also enjoy
in-school tournaments among themselves. Sport at Beacon Hill is not all about representing the school competitively – pupils can learn a sport and enjoy healthy exercise at the many extra-curricular clubs laid on. The less traditional activities on offer include Futsal – a variation on football popular among girls – and Frisbee. The Monday rowing club is a popular new addition this year thanks to a state-of-the-art rowing machine funded by the local authority. And some pupils are learning to teach sport to others as members of the Leadership Academy.

It’s a Shaw thing for Montgomery MONTGOMERY U12s are through to the last eight of basketball’s Lancashire Schools Cup after some outstanding scoring by Will Shaw. They responded superbly to an agonising 20-19 defeat at St Wilfred’s, Blackburn, to beat Chorley side Southlands 45-27 and another Blackburn school, St Bede’s, 26-8. St Wilfred’s won with a basket in the dying seconds after Shaw (eight
points) and Jack Fletcher (six) led the way for Montgomery. Shaw then netted 18 points against Southlands, well supported by Liam Rigby (nine) and Fletcher (eight). Jordan Ashton was outstanding as off-guard. Shaw again led the way (11 points) as the victory over St Bede’s secured a home quarterfinal, Fletcher and Fraser Thorpe both scoring six.
Queen Mary’s invincibles THE Year 10 netball team at King Edward and Queen Mary’s School continued their unbeaten season with a 32-0 victory over Lytham St Annes High School. Captain Hannah Williams (right) led by example and Laura Wimperis was the player of the match.
Walker marches to glory with NW title BLACKPOOL boxer Taylor Walker (right) was crowned North West Schools champion days before his 15th birthday. The Highfield School pupil won the 66-70kgs title in Gorton, Manchester. Taylor, who lives on Highfield Road, represents Atherton’s Pool of Life club but trains with Blackpool Kingscote. He stopped Bradbury and Stockport’s Steve Johnson in the three-round final. Walker led by a point after the first round and tied the second. Needing to apply more pressure in the third, Walker floored Johnson with a long right hand and the Stockport fighter was counted out. Walker has boxed since the age of 11 but missed most of last season with a hand injury. He is making up for lost time and hopes for an England vest.

500 in running at the festival MORE than 500 pupils from schools across the Fylde are taking part in a major athletics festival organised by the Wyre and Fylde School Sports Partnership.
The athletics feast commenced with a Year 7 and 8 Secondary schools sportshall event indoor at Thornton YMCA.
SOPHIE RILEY: Bronze medal
Northern pride of Fylde girls IT was a case of girl power for Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Athletics Club in Sheffield, where an all-female team of 14 competed in the Northern Athletics Indoor Championships. Kirkham’s ace flier, Lucy Mansfield was again the club’s star performer, winning the under-17 300m in a superb 40.92secs. Lytham’s Sophie Riley took bronze in the under-15 200m in 26.2, missing out on silver by just one tenth of a second. No one was unluckier to miss out on the medals than another Kirkham champion Katy Wyper, who was fourth in both the U17 60m hurdles (8.19) and 200m (26.69). Loryn McCrudden only just missed bronze too, finishing fourth in the U17 pole vault (2.30m), with her training partner Chloe Needham in fifth. Alicia Johnston was fifth in the U17 200m (27.18), while there were sixth-placed finishes forU15s Kassidy Knight (long jump, 4.58m) and Bethany Towers (60m hurdles, 9.37 secs) and for U17 Megan Healey in the 300m (46.27). The club’s other finalists were under-15s Taegan O’Hara ( long jump, 4.20m) and Lindsay O’Brien (shot, 6.30m). Bethany Shaw, Claudia Fiddler and Ruth Holdsworth just missed out on the finals but all did their club proud.
Boys and girls from 10 secondary schools competed in a host of track and field events, including relays, lap races, long jump and triple jump. Lytham St Annes High won the Year 7 competition and St Aidan’s were Year 8 winners. Lytham St Annes were the overall winners and will now go on to represent the Wyre and Fylde School Sports Partnership at the School County Sports Hall Athletics event on February 10. The Primary Sports Hall Athletics competition at Blackpool Sports Centre which was supported by Blackpool Wyre and Fylde AC. Ten primary schools took part, cheered on by the enthusiastic crowd. Newton Bluecoat were the winners with 153, pipping Our Lady Star of the Sea by five. Carr Hill Primary School will join Newton Blue Coat in representing Wyre and Fylde respectively in the county indoor event on February 10.
Super Leaguer Ben COLLEGIATE rugby league player Ben Jones has been snapped up for the Super League. The Year 11 pupil has signed for the Warrington Wolves Academy. Winger Ben, who lives in central Blackpool, plays for Warrington club Burtonwood Bulldogs, having previously been with Blackpool Scorpions. Arnold show Lancs Cup style THEIR Daily Mail Cup adventure may have finished but Arnold School’s Under-15A team have started another cup run, this time in the Lancashire Cup. A 25-13 victory over Hutton GS won them a place in the semi-finals as a fine first-half display against the elements laid the platform. Despite being pinned back early on, Arnold took the lead when Jacob Reid intercepted and ran 75 yards before off-loading for Will Fairhead to score under the posts.. A 35-metre penalty by Sam Crowther in between two from Hutton left Arnold 10-6 ahead. Jacob Nickson, James Haythornthwaite and James Aird all drove strongly for Fylde, and it was the latter who crashed over from a penalty to give Arnold a 17-6 half-time lead. Fly-half Sam Crowther’s kicks pinned Hutton back for much of the second half and his penalty stretched the lead. Aird dummied over for his second try to seal the win, though Hutton added a late consolation. The Arnold first XV returned to winning ways with two victories in four days.

Rossall’s ‘golden generation’
FIVE players celebrated their Lancashire call-ups with goals to help Rossall School be crowned county under-14 hockey champions. The Fleetwood boys defeated local rivals Baines 12-0 in the schools’ final. England international Louis Weir led the way with five goals, having scored four in the 7-0 semi-final win over Merchant Taylor’s of Crosby. Two-goal Harry Southern, Will Parker, Charlie
Andrews and Jack Morrison have also been selected for the county and all scored in the final. Luke Williams netted the other two. Rossall’s reward is a tough semi-final against Altrincham Grammar in the North West Championship. Coach Guy Emmett hailed the team the best he has taken charge of, saying: “This is something of a golden generation. Our performance
against Baines was fantastic and very clinical, and we ended Merchant Taylor’s decade of supremacy in this competition.” Stephen Kane and Scott Hume also represent the county at U14 level. Rossall narrowly missed out on a county cup double when their under-18s were beaten 4-2 by Merchant Taylor’s in a fiercely-contested final. Charles Hough scored both goals and Lenard
Lohmeyer was named man of the match. Rossall U14s: Back (from left): Cameron Ronson, George Briscoe, Luke Williams, William Parker, Frazier Forster, Jack Morrison, Thadeus Dean, Steven Kane. Front: Scott Hume, Louis Weir, Charles Andrews, Joshua Eastham, Harry Southern, Jaden Farmer, Harley Taylor. Coaches Anthony Fairhurst (left) and Guy Emmett.

First was a 30-0 victory over Bury GS in the Lancashire Plate. Josh Beaumont was outstanding and the tryscorers were Tom Horam, Julian Richardson, Chris West and Alex Walkden Arnold conceded the opening try away to St Edward’s in Liverpool but skipper and fly-half led the fightback, scoring all the points in a 17-7 victory, including the only try. In other matches against St Edward’s, the Second XV were edged out 8-7 in a full-blooded encounter. The free-scoring Aird was at it again for the Under-15A, scoring a firsthalf hat-trick and five in all in the 51-10 victory. Tom Jepson and Jacob Reid also scored, with John Kenyon, James Wilson, Callum Whiteside and David Mitchell also catching the eye. The Under-14A lost 10-0 in a match that also doubled as a Lancashire Cup quarter-final. Alex Casey and Jonathan Adams were outstanding, while Oliver Hopins and Andrew Walkden made some probing runs. Finally, the Under-12A lost 20-10 despite tries by Andrew Perry and Oliver Greenwood-Taziker. ■ More rugby back page

FC Rangers 4YMCA 6 YMCA kept their title hopes alive with this hard-earned victory. Two goals by Dave Cartmell put them in the driving seat and Josh Clayton made it 3-0. Rangers pulled one back and Chris Clinch restored the visitors’ three-goal lead at half-time. Clinch scored his second and Rangers reduced the deficit to 5-2 before Cartmell completed his hat-trick. Rangers battled bravely on and scored twice more. Dempster scored two of their goals, while Green and Clayton were also on target. Thom and Owen Futter had excellent games for YMCA. Clifton Rangers 2 Kirkham Juniors A 4 KIRKHAM continued their winning run after an early Adam Dinsley goal gave them a good start. A Tom Gargett double put them in control, though Clifton made it 3-1 at half-time. Sam Tattersall completed the visitors’ scoring before Clifton’s deserved second. Fisher and Wright scored for Clifton, while Sam Howarth, Niall White and James Barber impressed for Kirkham. Wyre 2 Foxhall 4 BOTH sides played some fine football on a boggy pitch. A fine shot into the corner of the net by Sam Kowalski put Foxhall in front and they quickly doubled their lead through Kieran Wilson. Wyre made it 2-1 at half-time and were level early in the second half after two Cox goals. Tyler Davies-Clarke restored Wyre’s lead after a great run from the halfway line and Tyler Parker-Starkie’s corner found the net to complete the scoring.
UNDER-12
Lytham 1 South Shore 7 THE score suggests a comfortably victory for South Shore but for the first 40 minutes were evenly contested. James Carty defended strongly as Lytham coped with the early pressure, though Shore were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to two Jack Williams strikes. Williams soon completed his hat-trick, powering in a fine header from a corner, though Lytham pulled one back when a high ball by their man of the match Harry Greenwood sailed over the keeper’s head. But when Williams grabbed his fourth on the day and 39th of the season, the game was effectively over. Cori Ward made some fine saves for Lytham, but Shore added three more with fine strikes by Josh Kay, Joe Brown, and Kieran Hindle. Lytham did have more chances, with Connor Jordan going close and the hardworking Billy McLean having a goal disallowed. Impressive for Shore were Josh Boyne and Tom Porter in midfield, and Mark Drinnan and Sam Appleton in defence. St Annes 1 Spirit ofYouth 1 ST ANNES gave their best display of the season as both sides produced good football. James Naylor was outstanding in St Annes’ midfield but the first half ended goalless. As Reece Duffy frustrated the Spirit attackers, Tom Bradley opened the scoring for the home side from James Naylor’s perfect pass. Spirit’s pressure was rewarded when William Goldie-Galloway equalised with a firm shot after good work from Ryan Glennerster. New signing Shane Delaney nearly won
the game for Spirit but his blistering shot hit the underside of the bar and was cleared. Lewis Hodge was St Annes’ man of the match, while Curtis Burke stood out for Spirit.
Foxhall 0YMCA 3 YMCA started well against a spirited Foxhall as Aiden Atchison and Jack Crawford both went close on several occasions. The breakthrough came midway through the first half, when Conah Bishop beat his man and crossed for Carl Kennedy to fire into the bottom corner. Foxhall had their chances but keeper Chester Duff ensured that it remained 1-0 at the break. Bradley Garner made an immediate impact up front, with Jordan Willder menacing down the left. The skilful and pacy Crawford doubled the lead and Garner hit the post for a second time before Willder converted the rebound. Cameron Stubbs was outstanding in a very good YMCA display. Clifton Rangers 1 FC Rangers 3 FC gradually got on top in a hard-fought match, with Nathan Reid twice going close. However, it was Clifton who finished a good passing move by opening the scoring through Parsons after 20 minutes. FC drew level just before the break with a neat finish from winger Dean Kerr. Reid put FC in front and Kerr sealed the victory with a great strike. Fleetwood Town 1 Thornton Cleveleys 0 THIS Hogan Cup first-round tie was staged on the hallowed Highbury turf because Thornton was waterlogged. Having lost 9-0 in the teams’ league encounter, Thornton gave a much better ac-
GIRLS’ ACTION Blackpool Under-12 3 Burnley Clarets 1 BLACKPOOL avenged their only defeat of the season and ended Burnley’s three-year unbeaten run in a pulsating clash of the top two. Burnley started strongly and scored early, and it took an outstanding Erin Hall save the score at 1-0 until half-time. But then Blackpool got on top and were ahead within 10 minutes of the restart as Gabby George’s equaliser was followed by a strike by captain Alix Reid. Burnley pushed forward for their equaliser set up a thrilling finale.
George’s second, a powerful shot from the edge of the box, sealed it with five minutes to go. This outstanding team display took Blackpool six points clear, though Burnley have two games in hand. Fleetwood Town Under-11 4 Euxton 1 FLEETWOOD have won through to the semi-finals of the North Valley League Cup in their first season. They started brightly, with Anna Reynolds and DemiLeigh Devereaux a constant threat. Devereaux smashed a shot against the upright as Fleet-
wood forced a succession of corners and they were rewarded when Reynolds broke the deadlock with a wellstruck shot. Anna netted again from long-range and it remained 2-0 at half-time as Kelsey Hargreaves, Yasmin McLaren and Francesca Hearty all worked hard to keep Euxton at bay. Euxton increased the pressure after the break and pulled one back, but Fleetwood scored the all-important next goal when Lucy Johnson fired into the top corner, having had a goal disallowed earlier. The outstanding Johnson broke up the middle to add her
second and seal victory, though Euxton refused to give up and forced a fine double save from player of the match Gabi Aston (pictured). YMCA Under-12 1 Woodbank Warriors 1 YMCA edged this hard-fought game to keep their 100 per cent record intact and remain top of the North Valley League. The only goal came midway through the second half, when Siobhan Fryer’s 20-yard strike flew in. Samantha Ball had a strong penalty claim turned down and Olivia Turnbull marshalled the defence well.

Highbury count of themselves and reached the interval all square after an even half. Town boss Peter Reader made changes and his side made the breakthrough when Ben Reader’s superb diagonal pass was blasted home by Callum Ellis from the edge of the box. Thornton never gave up and went closest to an equaliser when Connah Hadgraft’s free-kick was tipped away by Sam Jenson. Oliver Roe was Fleetwood’s man of the match, while Matthew Wright defended well.
UNDER-13
St Annes 2 Fleetwood Town 4 ST ANNES defended strongly in the first half of this fast game and Cheston opened the scoring only for Fleetwood to draw level just before the break. Stand-in keeper Spracklen made some fine saves as Fleetwood created plenty of chances before moving into a 3-1 lead. Chester added a second but Town restored their two-goal cushion. Rankin netted twice for Town, whose other scorers were Dollin and Wilkinson. St Annes’ man of the match was Danny Clarkson. AFC Blackpool 1 Clifton Rangers 7 FOUR goals in five minutes ensured that Rangers’ unbeaten run continues. Two goals by Sam Heany and strikes by Tom Adams and Ash Moreau made it 4-0 after this purple patch. Blackpool pulled one back after the break through Poskitt but goals from Jordan Stewart, David Morrell and Jamie Smith sealed the victory. Centre-halves Joe Campbell and Ross Thornley were first-class for Rangers. ■ WYRE Juniors Under-13 are on the lookout for a goalkeeper (see advert right).

AFC Blackpool 0YMCA 7 JORDAN Bishop opened the scoring from the edge of the area and Zenda Stemp followed up with a solo effort. Despite some outstanding saves by AFC keeper Sam Williams, Ryan Riley bagged the third before an excellent Robbie Hunter chip made it four. Man of the match Hunter completed his hat-trick to make it 6-0 a half-time. AFC came out fighting in the second half and deserve great credit for restricting YMCA to a single goal, with Alex Norris and Connor Smith outstanding in defence. But they could not prevent Stemp’s second, following a typical mazy run. St Annes 5 Kirkham 0 TEN-MAN Kirkham played with plenty of heart but were beaten by a Harrison
Ball hat-trick, a fantastic strike from Joshua Lacey and a late Matthew Hartley strike. James Pendleton was the man of the match, with Michael Brown strong in defence.
Poulton 15 Warton Typhoons 0 LEAGUE leaders Poulton showed no mercy to 10-man Warton as hotshot Adam Stephenson scored seven. Alex Louden bagged two and the other scorers were Sam Fielding, Saul Nicholas, Corey Harrison, Andy Barlow, James Burgess and Reece Fletcher. AFC Blackpool 4 Thornton Cleveleys 2 BLACKPOOL fell behind after three minutes but responded strongly, creating plenty of chances. It looked like it would not be the home side’s day as Connor Eastwood’s free-kick rebounded off the bar, and then two Brad Jordon goals put them on top at half-time. Thornton came out strongly for the second half and were denied an equaliser by Jonny Broadstock’s fingertip save. Daryl Loy hit the post but soon restored Blackpool’s two-goal cushion with a powerful volley. Again Thornton hit back but Loy rounded the keeper to score his second and seal the win. The Thornton scorers were Forrest and Porter. St Annes 1 Blackpool Rangers 1 ST ANNES had the early edge in this extremely fast game and striker Kurtis Willder gave them the lead with a clinical finish. Despite plenty of St Annes possession, Anderton equalised five minutes before the break. In an end-to-end second half, St Annes captain Connor Rogers and Stuart Moffatt defended doggedly and their man of the match Joel Kilgallen made some fine saves. Ryan Rogers and Kieran Norris were tireless in midfield.

Charlie leads charge Fleetwood Under-11 56 Southport 12 SOUTHPORT attempted to play expansively on a quagmire pitch but Fleetwood soon got on top. John Bate was the man of the match, while Josh Pearce and Chadwick kicked four goals each.

Oldham Under-16 0 Fleetwood Under-16 43 FLEETWOOD settled quickly and controlled this game from the outset. Kevin Christian and Anthony Cowley led the visitors’ charge and they led 29-0 at half-time. Fleetwood continued to work hard in an error-riddled second half, and showed great determination to keep Oldham at bay. Sam Whittle’s interception ensured that an outstanding defensive effort ended with the home side scoreless. Chris Jones scored two of Fleetwood’s seven tries, the others added by Scott Richardson, Jamie Beacher, Tom Clarke, Sam Whittle and Bradley Stapleton. Penrith 47 Fleetwood Under-17 12 FLEETWOOD led at half-time in their bid to avenge the previous weekend’s defeat by the Cumbrians ... but then everything went wrong. Tom Speed dummied between the posts for the first try and Phillips romped in for the second, both converted by Tom Evans. Evans made a couple of dangerous breaks after the interval but then the floodgates opened.
Fleetwood squad: Birks, Cameron, Cleary, Cowie, J Evans, T Evans, Hird, Foden, Macdonald-Hall, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Preston, Railton, Ruddlesdin, Speed, Teale, Turner, Walters, Webster, White.
