LIMBERING UP: Highfield High School year 7 & 8 in netball training
SPORTING pupils at Highfield Humanities College are getting their breath back after their outstanding efforts in last week’s Blackpool Schools cross-country.
In the event staged at Collegiate, Highfield dominated the Year 8/9 categories, winning both the boys’ and girls’ events.
In the other boys’ categories, Highfield finished first at Year 7 and second at Year 10/11. The girls were second in both these age groups. Highfield’s outstanding individuals were Alisha Roylance, who finished second at Year 8/9, and third-placed finishers Adam Curwen (Year 7) Sam Pickering (Yr 10-11). AllStars photographers were along invited along to a Year 7 and 8 netball practice session. The Year 7 team are preparing for a schools’ tournament at Palatine next week. The netball players can take inspiration from the girls’ basketball team, who have won every match, with Courtney Cain in outstanding form. Left winger Sharmin Choudhury has been in fine form for the under-13 hockey team, who have won two of their first three matches.

Kirkham power into last eight
KIRKHAM Grammar School U15s have won through to the quarter-finals of the national Daily Mail Vase.
They defeated Ermysteds GS from Skipton 15-0 in round seven, with back rowers Adam Galley, Jack Ingham and Craig Whalley-Hunter outstanding. Fly-half Will Roper’s kicking gradual-
ly got KGS on top and Jack Ingham scored the opening try from a lineout. Roper’s conversion and a penalty stretched the lead to 10-0 and full-back Sam Hall added the match-sealing try after good work by prop Micky Papangelis. KGS travel to face the Leys School in Cambridge in the last eight. Two more Hall tries, the second from a clever kick by winger Josh Rowlands, were not enough to save KGS from a 26-
New boys turn on big finish THE curtain came down on the rugby season for King Edward and Queen Mary School’s first XV with a thrilling 24-17 win over Bolton. With 10 players making their senior debut, the result was in doubt until the dying moments. Flanker Luke Skyrme charged down a clearance kick for the opening try and Grant Blackshaw converted superbly from wide out.
Bolton’s pressure resulted in two tries and a 12-7 half-time lead, despite strong defence by skipper Harry Ormsby and Kelham O’Hanlon. Ormsby sent winger Kenji King diving in for an equalising try after a strong burst by full-back Blackshaw. Again Bolton raised their game and regained the lead going into the final quarter. Lewis Williams, Ben
Holland and Dale Martin made inroads into the Bolton defence but could not apply the finishing touch until scrum-half Tom Webb powered through for a try which levelled the scores again. Blackshaw’s second outstanding conversion put his side in front and a try by man of the match Ross Collins sealed victory.
17 defeat by St Anselm’s College from Wirral. Will Fleuriot added a late consolation try, with Roper landing a conversion. KGS won all the other matches against Anselm’s, the U17s returning from Birkenhead with an excellent 40-0 win. Skipper Chris Travis led by example, while flankers Matthew Edgar and Bobby Garlington were in fine form, and Matthew Ellis, Josh Woods and Oliver Chambers also impressed. The U14s were too strong and fast, winning 45-0 as Ben Swift, Scott Rudd and Ben Rhodes-Powers scored two tries each. Mathew Beaty added the other 15 points with a try and five goals. Luke Woodward, Charlie Redshaw, Andrew Collins and Jack Smith were also most impressive. The U13s were always in control after two early Adam Coates tries and won 5021. Thomas Hunter ran in a hat-trick, while Will Lockhart and Lewis Leach were also outstanding. Leach, Jonathan Chan and James Penrose also scored for KGS, who took their foot off the pedal late on. KGS U12s recovered from a disappointing first half to win 14-5 with late tries by the excellent Connor Wilkinson and Scott Collins. Josh Powell converted both and David King also stood out.
Stanley’s James Bancroft (above) and Dean Edwards Blackpool Stanley U14 0 Haydock 62 STANLEY could only muster 12 players against the outstanding promotion-chasters and were gallant in defeat. The home side did get into their stride towards the end of the first half and were far more competitive in the second. Tyler Davies, Alex Caygill and James Bancroft were outstanding, while Declan Aylen and Dean Edwards also made plenty of ground. Stanley team: Davies, Gregory, Edwards, Halsall, Staff, McGill, SinclairSly, Caygill, Aylen, Bancroft, Taylor and Lomas
It’s home sweet home for Monty MONTGOMERY made the most of home advantage to win a Year 8 basketball tournament for Blackpool schools, beating Beacon Hill in the final. Although their team consisted mainly of Year 7 players, Montgomery continued the success which saw them win through to the Lancashire schools quarter-finals. The points were shared throughout the team, though the finishing of Jack Fletcher and Fraser Thorpe was first-class, while Will Shaw and Liam Rigby were also outstanding. Olympian Steve meets the elite WHEN it comes to launching a new elite centre for talented sports students across Wyre and Fylde, it helps to have a real highflier to do the honours. So who better than former Great Britain No.1 high jumper Steve Smith, bronze medallist at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA.
The former world junior champion from Liverpool was the keynote speaker at the launch of the Leadership Academy at Fleetwood High School. The first 36 students have registered with the Academy, created by the Wyre and Fylde Sports Partnership, with a view to furthering
their skills in sports coaching and volunteering. The students will meet regularly as they work towards Sports Coach UK qualifications in various sports. The final session take place in Windermere. Smith told the students how their efforts can help the young athletes of the future.
Level on net profit HONOURS finished even after four Year 7 netball games between Arnold and King Edward and Queen Mary School. The sharp-shooting of Arnold’s Josephine Box gave them the edge in the A game, which they won 11-3. Molly Betmead and Hannah Dennison attacked strongly for Arnold, while Laura Stokes stood out for KEQMS. In a much closer B match, Arnold recovered from 2-0 down to win 11-8. Emily Brook was outstanding in defence for Arnold, while Eloise
Evans was the KEQMS star player. KEQMS turned the tables in the C games, winning 5-1 thanks to excellent work in the circle by Christy O’Neill and Bryonny Whittaker. Becky Leversidge was also in fine form in defence, while Katie Lawson and Francesca Clarke caught the eye for Arnold. Shannon Clare was excellent as KEQMS defied an Arnold fightback to win the D game 5-3. Hannah Nutter and Anna Hood were Arnold’s best.
Depleted Scorps in braveshow Leyland Warriors 28 Blackpool Scorpions RL U16 14 SCORPIONS defied injuries to put in agallant performance. Playing downhill in the first half, they applied plenty of pressure but had only a penalty by scrum-half Anthony Livingstone to show for their efforts. The Blackpool side’s defence was stretched as Leyland scored twice in quick succession, adding a third try before halftime to lead 14-2. Hard-driving centre Zach Ward led the way as Scorpions took the game to their hosts playing uphill, and they were rewarded with a Liam Wilkinson try. However, two more tries saw the Warriors stretch their lead to 24-8, but Scorpions did not lie down as Josh Shearman, Omar Frederick, John Beattie, Joe Bullock and Ward continued to show tremendous determination. They were rewarded when captain Wilkinson jinked through for his second try and Livingstone kicked his third goal before Leyland completed the scoring. Scorpions team: Joe Bullock, James Gilfoyle, Taylor Ramsden, Zach Ward, Cameron Murray, Liam Wilkinson, Anthony Livingstone, John Beattie, Matthew Egan, Jack Swann-Connor, Omar Frederick, Harold Carr, Josh Shearman

They had more chances but it remained 1-0 at the break and Warton took control in the second half. Smith’s second, after fine work by the determined Andrew Kinsella, brought Layton back into the match at 2-2 but Warton went on to complete their victory despite fine displays by Nathan Laird and Layton man of the match Zak Gayton. Thorpe netted two for the victors, whose other scorers were Walsh and Graham.

YMCA 1 South Shore 1 SHORE remain in pole position after the second 1-1 draw in a fortnight between the top
GIRLS’ ACTION Mill Hill 0 Blackpool Under-10 2 UNBEATEN Blackpool recorded their tenth win in a tight match between the teams placed second and third. Alisha Yarwood opened the scoring on 10 minutes with a clean strike. Chyna Appleton, Erin Croft and Yarwood all went close but it remained 1-0 at half-time, with Karis Harrison and Charmaine Wilsdon solid at the back. Player of the match Yarwood sealed victory with her second late on, as Amy Sudworth, Natasha Marshall and Stephanie Haigh also impressed. Bury 0 Blackpool Under-11 5 IMPRESSIVE Blackpool had most of the possession and chances in the first half and took a 2-0 lead through Georgia Raines and Emma Hickson. The second half was much the same as a Georgia Black strike and Hickson’s second followed a Bury own goal. Player of the match Charlie Henderson and Jordan Dixon were outstanding at the back. Great Harwood 4 Fleetwood Town Under-11 4 TOWN were denied their first away win by two goals in the final seven minutes. Their unbeaten hosts scored first but Anna Reynolds equalised from long-range and then put Lucy Johnson in for a smart finish. The lead was shortlived and it was 2-2 at half-time. Fleetwood pressure then saw Johnson cut inside to score her second from a tight angle, and Reynolds also doubled her tally after a surge down the left. But Harwood pulled level – their third goal a cross-shot which caught the wind – despite outstanding displays by goalkeeper Gabi Aston and Yasmin McLaren (pictured).
Town squad: Aston, McLaren, Hearty, Hargreaves, Reynolds, Devereaux, Johnson, Brooks, Lauder, Blyth
YMCA Under-11 11 Myerscough 1 HANNAH Wright and Georgie Rose both scored second-half hattricks in this comprehensive win. Myerscough frustrated them
at times in the first half but YMCA still led 4-0 at the break, through Olivia Hooper, two from Ellie Miller and Alex Stephens’ excellent chip. Myerscough scored soon after the break but their celebrations were shortlived. Laurel North was the other scorer. Thingwall 3 Blackpool Under-13 1 AFTER a highly competitive but goalless first half, the league leaders took charge with two quick goals. Forced to push forward, Blackpool conceded a third before Bethany Bancroft’s consolation with 10 minutes left. Goalkeeper Rebecca Pearson was the player of the match, with defenders Katherine Haigh and Catrina Wilkinson also outstanding. YMCA Under-14 3 Fleetwood Town 0 YMCA won this top-of-the-table clash after Sasha Wozniak’s 20th-minute strike separated the teams at half-time. Stephanie Vickers doubled the lead and Samantha Ball’s header, following a length of the field move, ensured that YMCA maintain their 100 per cent record. Bromley Cross 0 Blackpool Under-15 6 AFTER Emma Ambrose opened the scoring from long range, Blackpool took control. Lauren Oatley scored a hat-trick, with Sian Dillon and Rhiannon Davies also on target. Tireless striker Nicole Petch was the player of the match. Rochdale 1 Blackpool Under-16 4 BLACKPOOL trailed at half-time, despite fearless goalkeeping from player of the match Charlotte Walker, but took control after the break. Alice Jackson equalised with a curling free-kick and Becky Preston rounded the keeper to put Blackpool ahead. With Rochdale down to 10 men, Alice Jackson scored her second with a back-header following Beth Fisher’s shot and Kelly Barlow completed the scoring with a fine free-kick.

two. YMCA started the brighter and Jack Crawford gave them a fifth-minute lead after great work from Jordan Willder and Conah Bishop. Willder was dangerous down the left until his injury and Carl Kennedy was strong in midfield as it remained 1-0 at half-time, with Mark Drinnan and Sam Appleton defending solidly for Shore. The visitors equalised when Jack Williams seized on Stevie Higgins’ superb pass to sprint clear for his 40th goal of the season. Ryan Darville was dangerous for Shore but they were grateful for some fine saves by Lee Squires and even more relieved by YMCA’s penalty miss late on. Spirit ofYouth 0 Poulton 1 KEEPER Andrew Sheffield kept Spirit at bay in the first half on his way to a fourth successive Poulton clean sheet. After the break, Sam Willan and Phil Allen seized the midfield initiative for Poulton, with George Ratcliffe outstanding at sweeper and Ollie Hughes delivering some fine crosses from the right. And it was man of the match Hughes who rifled the winner into the roof of the net from the edge of the box with 10 minutes left. Reece Lancashire was outstanding for Spirit.
Foxhall 2 Fleetwood Town 3 THIS match caught fire after the first half ended goalless, despite chances at both ends. Town went in front within a minute of the restart through Callum Ellis and debutant Josh Robinson lobbed the second three minutes later. Foxhall came back strongly with two goals in two minutes from Garner and Robinson but Jordan Anderton, Matthew Chadwick and Ben Reader all went close to a winner for Fleetwood before Ellis scored his second from a last-minute corner. St Annes 3 Lytham 1 ST ANNES started brightly and created chances but it was Lytham who led at half-time through an excellent Harry Greenwood goal. The home side came out with all guns blazing for the second half and were rewarded with a fine finish by Tom Bradley. Bradley’s second put St Annes in front and Reece Duffy sealed victory with a bullet header from a corner. Tireless midfielder Scott Holt was the home man of the match, while Zak Royle stood out for Lytham. Matt McGreehin and Matt Hardman both went close for the visitors. AFC Blackpool 1 Warton Typhoons 1 BOTH sides created early chances and it was AFC who led at half-time through Callan Roberts’ 20th-minute strike following a fine ball by Taylor Clews. The second half was also end-to-end, and Warton had a goal disallowed before AFC’s Adam Curwen hit the bar. An own goal earned Warton a share of the spoils after AFC missed penalty. Tireless defender Jack Pemberton was the home man of the match.

Thornton 2 Foxhall 6 FOXHALL moved within a point of leaders Poulton with three games in hand after Kurt Willoughby opened the scoring in Thornton. Captain Daniel Warren doubled the lead and Josh Smith increased it further before Rowley made it 3-1 at half-time. Thornton came out stronger after the break but Smith scored his second before Rowley did likewise for the home side. But after Smith smashed his hat-trick goal Jacob Cooper sealed the win, while fellow debutant Bradley Diamond also impressed. Clifton Rangers 23 Fleetwood Gym 0 TEN players scored against gutsy Fleetwood as Clifton went goal crazy. Dom

Brown led the way with six, just topping Sam Heany’s five, and there was a hattrick for Tom Adams. Ross Thornley and Ashley Moreau scored two apiece, while Jordan Stewart, Jamie Smith, Axel Simms, David Murrell and Michael Hall completed the tremendous tally. Wyre Junior B 1 Lytham 9 THE highly-influential Jack Dudgeon scored three of Lytham’s goals and his astute passing set up openings for others. Josh Harrison and Peter Hollowell both scored twice, while Joel Clitherow and the impressive Ronan Stott completed the scoring. Maxwell Reid caught the eye and Wyre scored their consolation from a great Barnes free-kick.
UNDER-14
Spirit ofYouth 4 St Annes 3 SPIRIT edged this one as neither side scored against the wind. Harrison Ball scored a first-half hattrick for St Annes, with Matthew Hartley and Gavin Annets outstanding in midfield. But the 3-0 half-time lead was not enough despite some fine goalkeeping by Cameron Hay and brave defending from man of the match Scott Little. Goals from Caton, O’Reilly, HewittGiles and a screamer from Larkin crowned Spirit’s comeback. YMCA 4 Poulton 1 YMCA put in another strong performance against the league leaders as Ryan Allan opened the scoring after Ryan Riley’s effort that had been saved. Paul Deeley went close with a free-kick before setting up a second for Allan, who completed a first-half hat-trick when he latched on to Oliver Drury’s through ball. The second half was tighter, though YMCA extended their lead with a Liam Whitehead penalty won by Zenda Stemp. Ben Proctor and Keil Fieldhouse went close with headers before Fletcher’s Poulton consolation. Lytham 7 Thornton 0 NATHAN Frodsham led the way with a hat-trick as Lytham gave an excellent performance with only 11 players. Mitch White netted two and Sam Webster and Dan Whitham were the other scorers for Lytham, who were three up at half-time. Charlie Goldie Galloway, Jordan Mellon and Leroy McGregor also had fine games.
UNDER-15
Fleetwood Town 1 AFC Blackpool 0 STEVE Rankine scored the winner as the leaders were beaten for only the second time. Mikey McAlpine threaded the ball through for the only goal after 20 minutes.
CUP-TIE TIED UP: Coulton Cup action from the Poulton Under10s (below) v St Annes epic
Man of the match Dave Riley handled superbly and produced an outstanding fingertip save, while McAlpine fired into the side-netting. Lee Gallagher and Ash McGough also impressed. Poulton 7 St Annes 2 BOTH sides gave their all in a high-tempo game. St Annes took the lead with a Curtis Willder penalty but Bradley Jones equalised. Willder bagged a second but the home side led 3-2 at half-time thanks to goals from Oliver Alston and Josh Cooper. Cooper completed his hat-trick as St Poulton pulled clear, with Jones netting his second and Tom Marsden also on target. Midfield dynamos Bradley Birch and Alistair Haines were outstanding.
UNDER-16
YMCA 2 Wyre Juniors (Thornton) 2 YMCA came back from two goals down to take a point in a fiercely-contested match. Sam Slack went close before Wyre scored twice in rapid succession through Taylor and Barnett to lead 2-0 at half-time. Oscar Rowley pulled one back but it still looked like Wyre’s day as a YM penalty drifted wide. But with 10 minutes left Josh Verenakis turned in the box to fire home. Alex Grindrod and Dan Jones impressed for YMCA . Lytham 11 Warton 0 NAT Houghton’s first-minute goal was followed two minutes later by a Josh Miller strike and the writing was on the wall for Warton. It was 8-0 at half-time as man of the match Miller completed his hat-trick, with Ben Cudworth, Tommy Smith and Joel Cummings all chipping in with goals. Jake Leatham, Jack Errington and Jake Smith were the second-half scorers.

ATHLETICS, HOCKEY
Photosales: 01253 361867
Schools too strong for Altrincham THE senior hockey sides of Arnold School and King Edward & Queen Mary School both gave outstanding displays to beat Altrincham. Arnold overwhelmed Altrincham 10-1. Harley Greene’s skill and speed on the right tormented the opposition as she crossed for Georgia Perkins to score the first two goals. Sophie Oliver added the third before Greene’s double strike to make it 5-0 at half-time. Greene netted twice more, Perkins completed a hat-trick, Oliver added her second and Cara Smith also scored. In other matches against Altrincham, the Second XI were outpaced and lost 4-0 despite Amy Bradley’s outstanding saves. The Under-15s gave their best display of the season to hit back from a 2-0 half-time deficit and earn a draw with two goals from star player Rachel Fackey. Sweeper Jenny Carpenter defended well and Lara Cherry was always dangerous. The Under-14s also trailed 2-0 at half-time but could not break through and conceded a third. Emily Adams scored five in the Under-13A’s 12-0 win, Francesca Beeby adding three on her debut at this level. Also on target were Emily Owen (2), Courtney Spector and the outstanding Jessica Omassoli. Lauren Simpkin scored both in the B team’s 5-2 defeat. Back with the Under-12A, Beeby scored twice in a 4-0 win, with Daisy Bradley and Hannah Dennison adding the others. Midfielder Molly Betmead was the player of the match and Hannah Dennison had a fine debut. Rachael Hammond were outstanding in the B team’s 1-1 draw, in which Danielle Brooker scored and Prianka Chabba defended well. ■ THE KEQMS first XI maintained their unbeaten record by
beating Altrincham 3-1. They started slowly in their first match since November and fell behind before Melissa Bentley followed up a shot by star player Megan Foy to equalise. It remained 1-1 at half-time, after Jordana Singleton shot just wide, but the Lytham side stepped up the pace and Jessica Lambert converted a corner. Hannah Shaw crowned an outstanding team performance with a penalty goal. Full-backs Katie Warren and Laura Wimperis excelled for the Under-15s, who won 4-0 with goals from Lottie Owen (2), Olivia Shaw and Joanne Ker. Alex Livesey’s fine display could not spare the Under-14s a 50 defeat, though the Under-12s produced two fine contests. Superb goalkeeping by Alice Smith ensured the A game ended goalless, while the B team were good value for a 2-0 win, in which captain Jasmine Brogden defended superbly. ■ KEQMS also recorded a clean sweep of wins over Rivington and Blackrod. The first XI were not at their best but won 3-1. Lambert gave them an early lead but an equaliser proved a wakeup call. Bentley made it 2-1 at half-time from a strong run and pass by Laura Bury. KEQMS controlled the second half and Bentley’s second sealed victory after player of the match Sophie Owen and Megan Foy linked up well. The Under-15s dominated to win 5-0, with Natasha Singleton and Lottie Owen dangerous throughout. They scored two apiece, while Olivia Shaw added the other and Jennie Lee was outstanding on the left wing. Player of the match Sophia Crawshaw scored both goals as the Under-14s got back to winning ways, while the Rachel Hirst netted four in the Under13s’ 6-0 win. Laura Stokes starred for the Under-12s with a hat-trick in their 6-1 success.
HALL OF FAME: Action from the secondary schools’ indoor athletics final at Blackpool sports centre, with Samantha Myerscough throwing the javelin for Montgomery (left), the victorious Beacon Hill in the shuttle races and Bispham High in the sprints (right) Pictures: ROB LOCK
ANCHORSHOLME and Beacon Hill schools will represent Blackpool at the Lancashire Indoor Athletics finals in Chorley next week.
These schools emerged victorious from a series of competitions in which 650 children took part. Some 240 contested finals at Blackpool Sports Centre.
Indoor dream teams The Primary Events involving the eight families of Blackpool primary schools began before Christmas and resulted in overall success for Anchorsholme from Thornton Cleveleys. The secondary schools were all represented in the final at the Sports Centre last week, when Beacon Hill came out on top.
The programme is ran by Blackpool School Sport Partnership but is heavily dependent on the volunteers from local secondary schools and Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Athletic Club. Blackpool senior sports coach Matt Craddock said: “Athletics is fantastic for developing children in the fundamentals of sport.”
