SCHOOL OF THE WEEK: CARR HILL
Hill’s peak condition KIRKHAM Carr Hill believes in setting the highest sporting standards – which is why an athlete of the calibre of Paralympian Shelly Woods was invited along to be special guest at the school’s 2008 sportsman’s dinner/presentation evening at Ribby Hall.
The Beijing double medallist was joined by over 300 students and guests as she presented the prizes marking another year of achievement. Rugby at Carr Hill has gone from strength to strength over the past three years, benefitting from the involvement of the Fylde RUFC youth development team headed by Alan Holmes and Dave Wilks. The school has repaid the Fylde club by providing numerous players in all age groups, including North Lancashire representative Tom Nicholson. Pride of place goes to the Year 10 team, who are unbeaten all year and won all their group games in the Emerging Schools Lancashire Cup The Year 8, 9 and 11 teams are all well placed for solid mid-table finishes in their leagues, while Years 8 and 9 have qualified for the plate knockout stages of the Lancashire Cup. The Year 7 team are looking good for a strong term. In football, Year 8 have been the most improved team, recording a convincing win over Hodgson last term. Year 10 won their league, defeating Baines 4-1 in the final, and have reached the third round of the Lancashire Cup. Semi-finalists last season, they are hoping to go one better. Having reached the third round of the Lancashire Cup and the county
semi-finals of the English Schools tournament, the Year 11 side have won through to the League Cup final and will play St Aidan’s. The sixth form netball team are unbeaten this year, while the Year 11 team are looking at a high finish in their league. The other four age groups have all had their successes, with the Year 7 team becoming a force to be reckoned with. Hockey players Ellen and Abigail Williams, Katie Barker and Abigail Wensley have all represented Lancashire. There were individual and team successes in the Fylde and Wyre Coast Cross Country Championships. The Year 10-11 girls and Year 7 boys both finished second. Katie Barker led the way for the girls and Callum Fielding for the boys. The boys’ Years 10-11 team finished third (Aaron Jordan eighth) and Years 8-9 fourth (Mark Parker 20th). New extra-curricular activities have been introduced for students who may not wish to play traditional team games. Cheerleading is very popular as are trampolining, gymnastics, dance, squash, tennis and badminton. Year 11 pupils have linked up with the YMCA for the fitness-boosting ‘Go Scheme’, with planned activities including a skiing holiday and a day at the Wimbledon tennis championships. The Fylde Young Ambassadors were selected from Carr Hill: Year 11 pupils Lucy Woods, Danny Monckton and senior sports captains Rebecca Gill and Jack Thackway actively raised the profile of sport and PE within school and the local community. The school has organised numerous events, including the boys’ Fylde Coast Athletics championship, netball tournaments and leagues, hockey tournaments and cross country championships.

North star Perkins stakes his claim
FYLDE rugby player Ben Perkins (above) took another impressive step towards national selection with a tryscoring performance for the North of England 16 Group on Sunday. Centre Ben, who plays for Fylde Under-16s and Arnold School, helped the North to a 42-3 victory over a Lancashire 18 Group XV as they prepare to face the Midlands on Friday and London/South East (Sunday) in two England trial games in Coventry. England and England A selectors will watch both matches before finalising their squads. Perkins supported well to score the fifth of the North’s six tries against Lancashsire. His Fylde and North team-mate Tom Burtonwood, from Baines School, was prevented from playing by an injury sustained the previous day. ■ FLEETWOOD RU’s Adam Dawson and Tom Evans have both been selected for the Lancashire Under-18 Group Development Squad after impressive trials (see back page).
IT’S ALL HAPPENING: Activities include cheerleading (above), badminton (left) and table tennis (below), while Shelly Woods (bottom) was star guest on the presentation night
ST MARY’S FOOTBALL TEAM (from left): Back row, Luke Higham, Olly Moore, Stephen Higgins, Jacob Trainor; front row, Joe Brown, Josh Brownwood, Connor O’Boyle and Casey Hindle
St Mary’s storm back into finals THE Year 7 footballers from St Mary’s Catholic College have won through to the next stage of two prestigious tournaments. The St Walburga’s Road school overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to beat Ormskirk school St Bede’s 5-2 to earn a place in the Lancashire Cup finals. Allen netted twice after Josh Brown scored a firsthalf goal. St Mary’s other scorers were Casey Hindle and Luke Higham with a superb solo effort. They can also look forward to representing the Fylde coast in the next stage of the English Schools FA 5-a-side tournament in Preston this month. Higham, Olly Moore and Jacob Trainor were outstanding as they opened their group with a 7-2 victory over Hodgson at Collegiate. St Aidan’s School were
beaten 6-3 as Josh Brownwood, Brown and Stephen Higgins caught the eye. That meant a draw against St Bede’s of Lytham would suffice to see St Mary’s through and this is what they achieved. It finished 3-3, though St Mary’s trailed for much of the game, with Connor O’Boyle and Hindle performing well. Blackpool schools Palatine, St Georges and Montgomery awaited St Mary’s in the next stage A late Higham strike sealed a 2-1 victory over Montomery, in which both sides defended solidly. O’Boyle kept a clean sheet in the 6-0 win over Palatine, meaning St Mary’s again needed to draw their final game. And again it was hardearned as St Mary’s twice came back from behind, equalising for the second time in the final minute.

Super Harry tops the bill as North Shore hands out prizes JUNIOR golf at North Shore is thriving – if evidence of the annual presentation evening is any guide.
The turn-out topped 100 and included junior members, parents, guests and club officials.
SHORE FIRE HITS (from left): Frankie Kelly, Ryan Anderson, David Collis, Graham Shaw ( Club Captain)
Trophies and prizes were presented in the clubhouse to the juniors . The overall junior championship was won by David Collis, who also took the captain’s prize. The president’s prize was won by Frankie Kelly, who was also handed the trophy for the under-15 player of the year. Garen Tchobanian won the lady captain’s prize, while the vice-captain’s prize went to
Lewis Thewlis. Harry Routledge was nearly penalised for excess baggage on the way out of the club! He won the North Shore junior open, the lady president’s prize and the junior organiser’s prize – a real clean sweep! As a result of all his success, Harry’s handicap has been reduced from eight to four. Not surprisingly, he was named the most improved player of the year. The distinction of being the ‘best new player’ went to Chris Ainsley. Ryan Anderson was nominated as the player of the year and appointed junior captain for2009. The summer knockout trophy was presented to Frankie Kelly, who beat Lewis Thewlis in the final.

Fylde fab four in UK top ten A FINE year in track and field for young Blackpool Wyre and Fylde AC aces is reflected in the final UK Athletics rankings for 2008 – four of them feature in the top 10 lists.
James Davies’s consistent year in the under-17 triple jump has been rewarded with a UK ranking of seventh. The Poulton boy’s personal best is 14.08m.
JAMES DAVIES: Ranked seven
RIDING HIGH IN THE CHARTS: Sprinters Ben Everson (left) and Lydia Critchley
In the same discipline, fellow multi-eventer Declan O’Hara is ranked 18th (3.80m). Lucy Mansfield’s best 200m time of 24.6secs earned the Kirkham sprint starlet 14th place in the junior rankings and 44th among the seniors. Pole vaulter Matt Wright is also ranked 14th in the country after a clearance of 4.40m. The under-15 girls proved to be the club’s most successful age group, with Thornton’s Lydia Critchley ranked seventh in the 300m (42.1) and her training partner Alicia Johnston 20th. Middle distance ace Bianca Pedersen, from Thornton, ranks 18th in the 800m with a splendid 2:17.3. And three of the under-13s feature at the upper end of the charts: exciting sprinter Tash Gardner of Wesham is ninth in the 200m (27.2), Lytham’s Ben Everson 10th in the 1500m (4:44.7) and Lindsey O’Brien 17th in the javelin (25.28m).
Country girls lead the way for Kirkham KIRKHAM Grammar School athletes were running hot in the regional cross country championships. The girls were crowned winners in two of the three age groups and finished second in the other. There was also victory for the boys’ under-16s. The winning girls’ teams were the under-14s and under-16s, while the under-12s were runners-up. Imogen Pierce led the way for the under-14s, finishing sixth, and was closely followed by Katy Ingham. For the winning under-16s, Ashley Bradshaw was second, Katie Penrose fifth and Charlotte Lucas seventh. Amy Lawler was the under-12s’ outstanding runner, finishing third. Besides the under-16 team victory, the KGS boys achieved individual wins in that race (Richard Morrell) and the under-12 event (Henry Cameron). Ben Jones was third in the under-16s.
Our sporty schools hit fit target
TASH GARDNER
WYRE and Fylde schools are winning the governmentbacked race against obesity by hitting school sport targets. The latest School Sport Survey reveals that 92 per cent of five to 16-year-olds in Wyre and Fylde schools take part in at least two hours’ high quality PE and sport per week – that percentage repre-
sents around 20,500 young people. It is an increase of eight per cent on the first survey 12 months earlier, with the greatest improvement among primary school pupils aged 7-11. The Wyre and Fylde School Sport Partnership was formed in 2005 to boost sports opportunities for pupils in 10 secondary, 66 pri-
mary and three special schools. It has helped forge links between schools and sports clubs, while the number of competitions and the range of sports on offer have also increased. Several schools have gained the Activemark (primary) and Sportsmark (secondary/special) for their sports provision.

Kirkham 6 FC Rangers 2 RANGERS took an early lead but this seemed to spark Kirkham to live and they responded with goals from Matty Neill and Adam Dinsley. Strikes by Jackson Ashworth and defender Will Hughes, with his first of the season, made it four by half-time. Matty Jones scored the second half goals for Kirkham, with Sam Howarth, Niall White and Thomas Jefferson all notable. The FC scorers were Deenyson and Dempster. Blackpool Rangers Blues 1YMCA 9 YMCA won through to the first round proper of the Hogan Cup this comfortable victory and ook an early lead through Sam Warburton. Further goals followed from Lewis Thom, Chris Clinch, Josh Clayton and James Corbett, with Rangers pulling one back through Fletcher to make it 5-1 at half-time. YMCA remained in control as Clinch and Thom both notched a second, with Jordan Milligan and Dave Cartmell also on target. Tommy Harrison impressed throughout. St Annes 4 Fleetwood Gym 3 ST ANNES progressed to the first of the Hogan Cup with a battling performance. Goals by Chris Pipe and Tramontano gave the home side a 2-0 lead at half-time. Gym started the second half brightly and pulled one back before Pipe’s second restored the two-goal cushion with 15 minutes left. Fleetwood Gym then took control, scoring twice to force extra-time. Atkinson scored two of their goals and Johnson was the other scorer. Man of the match Pipe clinched victory with his hat-trick goal, while the tireless Phillip Mayler was also outstanding.

Thornton 3 Poulton 3 THE first league match of the year for these teams was a thriller in which Poulton equalised with the last kick. The visitors scored first when Philip Allen tapped in following up his own header from a corner, which had been well saved. Thornton equalised only for Poulton to regain the lead by half-time through a Tom Ardron strike. Thornton levelled early in the second half and then took the lead for the first time. Their scorers were Hadgraft, Harrison and Sharples. Their third goal looked like the winner until Poulton man of the match Fraser Poole slammed home the equaliser from the edge of the box with 30 seconds remaining. Spirit ofYouth 1 BJFF 2 BJFF took their chances to win this close encounter as Spirit missed out on an opportunity to go top of the domino division (even if South Shore have five games in hand). Spirit played well in the first half but changed ends a goal down and Bispham’s second left the home side with no way back. The BJ scorers were Hargreaves and Timmins. Curtis Burke pulled one back in the final five minutes for Spirit, whose man of the match was Riley Carlo.
St Annes 4 FC Rangers 0 BOTH sides started brightly and Reece Duffy had a goal disallowed before Scott Holt opened the scoring with a long-range shot. A fine passing move ended with Thomas Bradley rounding the keeper to make it 2-0 at half-time. FC had their chances before the break, with Nathan Reid twice denied by the keeper. Lewis Hodge converted Danny Singleton’s fine pass for the third and man off the match Bradley completed the scoring in the closing minutes after Singleton’s rocket shot rebounded off the bar. Ben Campbell in outstanding in central midfield for FC Rangers. YMCA 5 AFC Blackpool 0 YMCA won through to the Hogan Cup first round but Blackpool started in determined style and had some good early chances. YMCA soon found their rhythm and took a 10th minute lead when Jack Crawford linked up well with Aiden Atchison from a corner and curled a fine shot into the top corner. Atchison scored the second, from a through ball by James Rowley, then set up the hardworking Russell Townsend to make it 3-0 at half-time. Rowley scored the fourth at the far post after Conah Bishop’s cross had been flicked on by his brother Sullivan. Keeper Chester Duff came out and completed the scoring when he followed up Carl Kennedy’s thunderous strike. Jordan Willder, Bradley Garner, Cameron Stubbs and Oliver Moore also had fine games for YMCA. Clifton Rangers 0 Fleetwood Town 8 TOWN controlled this Hogan Cup preliminary round time with four goals in each half. Charlie Bradford side-footed home the opener at the far post after 15 minutes. Two minutes later Callum Ellis headed home Matthew Chadwick’s free-kick. The outstanding Chadwick made it three after Danny Haines’ shot hit the woodwork. Haines was not to be denied, scoring from a Chadwick corner. After the restart, Chadwick went close again before James Lydon fired home from 12 yards, and within a minute Ben Reader fired in a superb curling shot from outside the box. The purple patch continued two minutes later, when man of the match Chadwick controlled Bradford’s cross to score with a low drive before completing his hat-trick in the final minute. Wyre Juniors 1 Lytham 6 A REJUVENATED Lytham team set off at a blistering pace in this cup tie and took the lead through striker Billy McLean, after Brandon Matthews had forced a full-stretch save from the Wyre keeper. Man of the match Matthews reacted sharply to make it 2-0 at half-time, while Harry Greenwood and Matt McGreehin made dangerous runs. Liam Walton and James Carty defended solidly for Lytham but Wyre pulled one back through Mindes before Matthews netted twice more to complete his hat-trick. Wyre forced Lytham keeper Rhys Daly into some fine saves but the final scoreline had a one-sided look as Matt Hardman fired home and Connor Jordan made it six after McGree-

Maroons fight back to clinch cup win Lytham Under-10 Maroons A 2 Foxhall A 2 THIS eagerly-awaited Coulton Cup tie finally took place, with Lytham showing great determination to fight back from a 2-0 halftime deficit in the A game before clinching a 5-2 aggregate win with victory in the second match. Skipper Jack Burgoyne had the best of the early opportunities for Lytham but it was Foxhall who made their chances count in the first half. Carnan Dawson pulled one back with a curling shot into the top corern from Dec Fisher’s lay-off. More Lytham pressure was rewarded when Fisher raced on to a through ball by tireless man of the match Burgoyne to equalise.

Blackpool Rangers 1 Clifton Rangers 3 Clifton trailed early on to a long-range Whitehouse strike but hit back to win a place in the Hogan Cup first round. Goals by David Morrell and Thomas Adams put Clifton in front before Sam Heany sealed victory with a cheeky back-heel. Joe Campbell was outstanding at the back for the victors. St Annes 4 Spirit ofYouth 2 THE visitors capitalised on a flying start to lead 2-0 after 15 minutes. However, St Annes settled down to pull level by half-time thanks to goals by Jake Higson and Stephen Oberman. St Annes played with great belief and determination in the second half. Jamie Manley, who made some fine runs down the right, set up Danny Clarkson who put the home team ahead. Keeper James Remnant gave a man-of-the-match display for St Annes as Spirit piled on the pressure, and Oberman sealed victory with his second. Potter, Spracklen, Pollock and Hellon formed an outstanding back for for the home side. South Shore 0 Lytham 9 JOSH Harrison’s first-half hat-trick included one exquisite finish as Lytham took control against a spirited Shore side reduced to 10 men by injury for all but the first five minutes. Grafting Ali Harper deserved both his goals and there were two more for Ronan Stott. Will Halton and Conor Cuthbertson completed the Lytham scoring, while Steve Hardman put in another composed display and Max Reid was a livewire. Six down at half-time, Shore continued to battle
bravely and were unlucky not to get on the score sheet when Elliot Smith hit the foot of the post. Jack Sherlock, Matthew Houston, Harry Caton and Alex Thornley all battled valiantly for Shore.
whose man of the match Cameron Guffogg defended superbly alongside Gavin Annetts, Matthew Hanson and Matthew Hartley.

Kirkham 1 St Annes 0 ST ANNES played well to break down a well-drilled Kirkham defence but could not capitalise in front of goal in the first half. Both sides had their chances in a closely-contested second half and it was Kirkham who took the lead through Gornall with 10 minutes remaining. St Annes hit the crossbar and post as they chased an equaliser in the frantic final moments. Captain Connor Rogers was outstanding in the St Annes defence, while Stuart Moffatt, Rick James and John Vickers were all tireless.
Blackpool Rangers 2 Poulton 7 Poulton made it 11 wins out of 12 as top scorer Adam Stephenson netted four to make it 25 goals for the season. YMCA 3 South ShoreYouth 1 YMCA welcomed in the new year with this hardearned win. The even early exchanges brought few chances until YMCA broke the deadlock on 22 minutes, when Yiannis Verenakis steered home a header from a Harry Hobson free-kick. The home midfield got on top and Evan Taylor’s long throws caused plenty of problems. A 33rd-minute strike by captain Joe Kennedy made it 2-0 at half-time. Shore pulled one back four minutes after the restart through Hurst and went on to enjoy their best spell, forcing a wonder save from stand-in keeper Tom Molloy. YMCA rode their luck on occasions but kept South Shore at bay until man of the match Sam Slack clinched victory in the closing moments after exchanging passes with Verenakis.
Lytham Under-10 Maroons B 3 Foxhall B 0 The second game was not as tight as the Maroons took an aggregate lead for the first time when Liam Walsh opened the scoring with a 20-yard lob. It was the only goal of the half and resulted from bulldozing run by James Wolstenholme. The outstanding Matty Shacklock enabled Walsh to give Lytham breathing space by smashing home his second. Foxhall responded well and had their chances before Lytham sealed victory with their third. The classy Adam Warrington was Lytham’s man of the match.
North star so bright YMCA Under-11 Girls 10 Euxton 0 YMCA started their year in superb style, though Euxton played with great spirit. Laurel North began the scoring after five minutes, and both sides had chances in an end-toend opening until Erin Menzies made it 2-0. Hannah Wright scored twice after the break and Hooper notched a fourth as YMCA remained in control.

RUGBY
Team start 2009 with a big dipper CHRISTMAS may be a time for rest and relaxation but not for the rugby players of Fleetwood Under-17s.
TAKING THE PLUNGE: Fleetwood players prepare for a New Year’s Day dip
As if two matches over the festive period were not enough to keep the players in trim, they also started the year with a swim in the sea. They joined clubmates from Fleetwood RU’s mini/junior section in a sponsored dip at Rossall on New Year’s Day. It certainly woke up any players who’d had a late night ushering in 2009, though the club made sure there was plenty of hot food on hand back at the clubhouse afterwards. On the field, two closely contested matches brought mixed fortunes for the under-17s. An early try in the corner by centre Kris Phillips gave them the perfect against Northwich. But the Cheshire side had the wind in their favour in the first
half, and they used it well to kick deep and score an equalising try. James Cameron, Alex Maddern and Matty Webster were in inspiring form for Fleetwood but could not prevent Northwich taking the lead from a closerange scrum. But the turning point was a fine solo try by no.8 Adam Dawson, who beat two defenders for Fleetwood’s second score. The try resulted from quick passing by Tom Evans, who landed the conversion to make it 12-10 at half-time. With the wind now in their favour, Fleetwood surged forward, and Henry Turner and George Worthington both impressed on their return to action. A try by centre Keiran Teale sealed the win, again goaled by Tom Evans, while Tom Hird, James Evans and man of the match Jack Foden formed an outstanding front row.
Against Stockport, Fleetwood found themselves on the backfoot early on but recovered to trail 15-7 at half-time courtesy of a try by Tom Speed, who won the race to his own kick ahead, converted by Tom Evans. Henry Turner, George Worthington and Danny Maher were all in fine form but two more Stockport tries left Fleetwood with no way back. At least they had the final word with an excellent try-scoring move, started by Scott Kemp and finished by Speed, but made by a mazy run from halfway by full-back Stephen Preston. Evans landed his second goal to make the final score 25-14. Fleetwood squads: Birks, Cameron, Cleary, Cowie, Dawson, J Evans, T Evans, Hird, Foden, Kemp, MacdonaldHall, Maddern, Maher, Morgan, Phillips, Preston, Railton, Reynolds, Riley, Ruddlesdin, Speed, Teale, Turner, Walters, White, Worthington.
