A cheap choice
SUPERMINIS aren’t the small fry shopping hatches they once were. Tipping the scales at well over 1,000kg and at around four meters in length, we’re talking about substantial bits of metalwork but that raises questions about the engines charged with powering them. Can a supermini still get away with less than 1.3-litres? Ford thinks so, fitting a 1.25-litre unit to its Fiesta. This engine was fitted to the fourth generation Fiesta and the fifth, where it was actually replaced by an inferior 1.3-litre unit, then reintroduced later on. It’s back in this sixth generation Fiesta and now there are a pair of power options. The 59bhp entry-level option is predictably lacking in the performance department with the 060mph sprint taking a tiresome 16.9 seconds. The 81bhp alternative has more zip about it with a 13.3s sprint but it’s still lacking a bit in the muscle needed to propel a car of the
Fiesta’s size around town in a nippy fashion. Maximum torque is 84Nm at 4,200rpm, whereas the less powerful option produces its 80Nm at a slightly more accessible 3,600rpm. The wedge-effect of the Fiesta in profile doesn’t bode well for the rear seat passengers in the three-door car but the Fiesta surprises with decent legroom and headroom that’s manageable even for a six-footer. The windows are small and set high up, so light isn’t abundant in the back but the shopping bags, coats and road atlases that owners will store there most of the time won’t be overly worried. The five door models fare better with a bigger glass area creating a roomier feel and all derivatives share the same easily navigable control system for their electronic functions. It’s the price that’s going to persuade the majority of Fiesta 1.25 owners to take the plunge. It’s the cheapest way to get yourself into Ford’s iconic small car and for many, that
will be a recommendation in itself. You’ll pay just over £9,000 for the entry-level Studio model with the 59bhp engine and three doors. Specification isn’t palatial but you get bodycoloured bumpers, tinted glass, electric power steering, a CD stereo and the Ford Easy Fuel System that will prevent you from putting diesel in it during a moment of weakness. Step up to Style trim and the options of five doors and the more powerful engine are opened up. You pay £500 extra for the 81bhp unit. There are Style+ and Zetec trim levels for the 1.25litre buyer to consider with the 81bhp engine. The performance might not be stellar but running costs are agreeably low. Economy and emissions are 52.3mpg and 128g/km from the 59bhp cars while the 81bhp models get 49.5mpg and 133g/km. Ford’s Fiesta is an outstanding supermini that isn’t at its best with a 1.25-litre engine., though perfectly adequate for urban motoring,

An aggressive little estate car COOPER S CLUBMAN THERE’S something slightly naughty about a family load-lugger that can leave a hot hatchback standing in a race away from the lights. Even MINI is in on the act with its Cooper S Clubman but does the performance estate formula still work with a car of this diminutive size? The Cooper S Clubman isn’t lacking the pace required to gain entry to the performance estate club. Its 173bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine can get it to 60mph in 7.6s and customers who upgrade to the tuned John Cooper Works edition get 208bhp enabling a 6.8s sprint. That’s fast but the best bit about the Clubman is the way it retains the verve of the hatchbacked MINI. At close to £17,000, the Cooper

proper performance estate car. It’s plenty quick enough but there isn’t a lot of extra practicality over the hatchback and the aggressive feel of the car means it doesn’t lend itself all that well to family outings or weekend trips to the DIY centre. There may not be too many customers yearning for a MINI Cooper S with a bigger boot and a rather quirky door configuration but there will be some and for them, the Cooper S Clubman is tailor-made.

ASTRA VXR IT was a long time coming but the wait was worth it. While Volkswagen’s Golf was ruling the roost, engineers at Vauxhall were putting the finishing touches to a car equipped to wield a decisive horsepower advantage against Wolfsburg's finest. With no less than 240bhp on tap, Vauxhall’s Astra VXR remains one of the hottest hatch tickets that it’s currently possible to buy. Yes, we’ve seen V6 hatches that theoretically have more power but they're heavier and, of course, much more expensive. What’s more, it's a fair bet that none of them will be able to keep pace with the Astra VXR down a typically bumpy British country road. Think instead of the Astra VXR as a car more in the mould of the old Honda Civic Type-R albeit with another 40bhp to call upon. Performance really is searing, with 60mph being dispatched in around six seconds. Traction off the line is surprisingly good for a car with a powerful and lightweight engine driving the front wheels and only in damp conditions does the traction control system get a good workout. Once on the move, there's less in the way of torque steer than is present in, say, a Ford Focus RS and despite the firm suspension and optional 19-inch alloys that most will choose, the ride is reasonably malleable. It's certainly a good deal more compliant than a Peugeot 206 GTi 180 was. Comparisons such as these are necessary in order to provide a frame of reference for a car that moves the goalposts quite dramatically. This sort

of power from a hatch costing around £20,000 requires some mental readjustment. From the outside, the Astra VXR is distinguished by 18-inch alloys (19inch optional), a body-coloured V-
grille, ground- hugging side skirts, a rear spoiler and revised bumper assemblies, along with neat detail touches such as its Arden Blue front and rear brake callipers and VXR badges. Inside, there are Recaro seats,
revised instruments incorporating VXR logos, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, carbon-effect inserts on the doors and facia and an alloy gearknob, also with VXR detailing. Vauxhall has tweaked the Astra's cos-
metics a little, with sharper-looking front and rear lights, a revised front bumper, more chrome splashed about the grille and the choice of piano black or matt chrome interior finishing. Sport Hatch models like the VXR also get a honeycomb front grille. The raked roofline looks as if it'll have taller rear seat passengers entering the number of their chiropractor into the speed-dial but Vauxhall claims that rear seat space is well up to par for two adults. They just didn't specify what size.
Luggage room is slightly hampered by that rakish roofline but given the cavernous amount of space in the back of the five-door Astra, it's hard to see carrying capacity being a reason to grumble. Vauxhall’s Astra VXR continues to have the powerplant, the looks and the capability to remain a very big hit indeed in this sector and the staff at Vauxhall have convinced us that the VXR badge is something to be taken seriously. Although Ford’s Focus ST and the Honda Civic Type-R have a clear target to aim at, something tells me that Vauxhall aren’t unduly worried. Moorland Motors price for ExDemonstrator £17,295.

MOST modern Jeeps are as civilised as the next 4x4 vehicle but they do have a certain rough ‘n’ ready image . If you still imagine the average Jeep owner prowling the forest with a shotgun, it’s about time you modernised that view. The Jeep Compass could be the car to help you do it.
THE PRACTICALITIES From straight ahead, you’d instantly pick the Compass out as a Jeep product: the characteristic grille and lights are highly recognisable. Move round to the rear threequarter view and things aren’t so cut and dried, the tapered C-pillar looking pretty generic. Nevertheless it’s a smart piece of styling albeit one that could use some bigger wheels. What’s quite remarkable about
the Compass is how small it is when you get up close. It’s not a lot bigger than a Ford Focus and will appeal to buyers daunted by the prospect of driving a large SUV around town.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
The car is based on the same architecture as the Mitsubishi Outlander and hence the Dodge Caliber, the Citroën C-Crosser, the Peugeot 4007 and Jeep’s own Patriot. It’s offered with the choice of either a Volkswagen-sourced 2.0litre diesel or a 2.4-litre petrol engine.

The sort of money you’ll be paying
wouldn’t even get you close to the entry-level Toyota RAV4 and you’re a long way shy of a Land Rover Freelander.
COULD I LIVE WITH ONE?
I think there’s a lot to be said for an all-American Jeep that’s affordable and a little softer around the edges. The Compass might not be the last word in sophistication but it’s a tough customer that’s also reasonably amiable on the road. If you’re still of the opinion that Jeep only caters for he-man offroad drivers and well-heeled buyers seeking big luxury SUVs, the Compass can set you straight.

TOYOTA’S 1.33-litre Yaris supermini is one of a growing number of cars to use stop and start technology to cut fuel consumption, emissions and even noise levels. The decision to call the 1.3litre petrol engine in the Yaris the ‘1.33’ isto underline the fact that this is a substantially different and more advanced powerplant than the old 1.3litre unit. It benefits from Toyota’s Dual VVT-i variable valve timing technology and has an extremely high compression ratio for a petrol engine enabling it to extract larger amounts of energy from its fuel than equivalent units. The Stop & Start technology is the highlight, and comes into play when the Yaris is stationary, the gear lever is in neural and the clutch is released. This gives the driver control over the engine stopping process. If traffic ahead is about to move, keep the clutch in and the Yaris 1.33
behaves like a conventional car. The Yaris’ compact curves are easy enough on the eye. The latest models blend the front bumper and bonnet more seamlessly than before while also incorporating protection mouldings designed to take the financial sting out of minor parking knocks. The front spoiler has also been lowered slightly giving a fractionally sportier look and together with a flatter design for the dirty side of the car, this helps aerodynamics, further improving efficiency. The Yaris trim level hierarchy
currently runs from T2 to TR, SR and T Spirit but the 1.33litre Stop & Start drivetrain can’t be matched to the basic T2 trim level. That makes TR the entry point and at this level buyers get a six-speaker stereo with MP3 compatibility and an AUX port, air-conditioning, body-coloured mirrors and a good line-up of safety kit. All Yaris models have ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, twin front airbags and side airbags but the TR adds curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag too. VSC stability control is only available as an option.
Running costs have always been one of the things the Toyota Yaris did well. The 1.33litre engine helps in this regard, contributing to a modern Yaris range in which every model dips under the 120g/km barrier for CO2 emissions. Combine this factor with Toyota’s exemplary reliability record and perky residual values and you’d have to say that cost of ownership is an area where the Yaris can shine. With emissions of 119g/km and fuel economy of 55.4mpg, the 1.33 Yaris turns in a very strong performance for a 100bhp petrol-engined supermini. The 1.4-litre diesel does better but is £850 more. Prices are £10,275-£12,475. Having your engine cut out when your car stops will take getting used to but there are real efficiency savings.
