Hey, good looking

A FEW years back, it dawned on the major car manufacturers that the public really liked 4x4 vehicles. There was a corresponding explosion in the numbers of off-roaders both in the showrooms and on the roads, followed by an entirely predictable backlash against them. Recently it’s been looking like the public don’t like 4x4s that much. What they like is certain characteristics only 4x4 vehicles could offer. The cross-over vehicle was born to deliver these qualities, having distilled away the foibles of the off-roader. Peugeot’s 3008, costing, £15,000 to £20,000, is just such a cross-over but is it the car for you? Peugeot is putting the best of its engine range to work in the 3008. That means 2.0litre and 1.6-litre HDi diesels plus 1.6-litre VTi and THP petrols. If we take the diesel options first, there’s a 110bhp 1.6-litre unit at the base of the range that’s available with the standard sixspeed manual gearbox.

THE 3008 or Peugeot’s clever electronically-controlled clutchless system. Next come the 2.0-litre options packing 150bhp and 163bhp. The more powerful of these comes with a conventional six-speed automatic. Petrol buyers can take either the 120bhp 1.6-litre VTi engine and its five-speed manual transmission or step on to the turbocharged 1.6litre THP which develops 150bhp. The 3008 runs on the same underpinnings as the 308 hatch and its other spin-off models. Styling-wise, it employs a conventional hatchback shape but its high nose, the beefy grille and bumper combination and those flared wheelarches provide the hint of SUV that marks the 3008 out as a cross-over. Peugeot’s recent design efforts have split opinion with the enormous yawning grille that was rolled out across the model range proving distinctive but not always in an aesthetically

jaguar

pleasing way. In moving away from this family face, the 3008 is one of the best looking Peugeots we’ve seen for a while. The seating is higher than a normal hatchback, mimicking one of the traits most popular with buyers choosing compact 4x4 vehicles. There’s also a large glazed area to assist further with visibility. An optional glass roof like the one on the 308 SW estate can further increase light making its way into the cabin. Peugeot is proud of the air-conditioning system. It features an air-quality sensor that closes off the inflow of air from outside the car if high levels of pollution are detected, recalculating the air that’s already inside. Car buyers uncertain whether to plump for the high driving position and chunky looks of a 4x4 or the handling composure and fuel economy of a family hatchback could have their dilemma solved at a stroke by the Peugeot 3008. This cross-over model’s amalgamation of qualities from two popular market sectors could be what some people are looking for.

Fitting rival for super saloons NO PRIZES for guessing where the Jaguar XFR’s main rivals will come from. Toppling the AMG E-Classes from Mercedes, BMW’s M5 and Audi’s RS6, will not be easy but for the first time in a long time, Jaguar has the ingredients to pull it off. The XFR has a supercharged 503bhp V8 engine which is a good start when your rivals are some of the world’s fastest saloons. Maximum torque of 625Nm all the way from 2,500rpm to 5,500rpm is another bonus. It helps the big Jag cover the 060mph sprint in 4.7s and launch from 50mph to 70mph in just 1.9s. Top speed is limited to 155mph. The role of the super saloon as a halo product casting its divine light down on to less extreme models in the range requires it to look the part. In the case of cars in the XFR class, that means aggressive and powerful but not too crass. Jaguar had a great starting point with the XF’s beautifully flowing bodywork but the R needed greater purpose. Spoilers and sill extensions lower

THE XFR the car while the front grill itself is also lower and wider with its chromed wire mesh finish. The bonnet is punctuated by twin louvered air intakes and the rear has chromed tailpipes with a modest spoiler on the boot lid. The all-important wheels are huge 20 inch affairs and chunky silver brake callipers can be glimpsed between their spokes. Taking on the class leading super saloons is a risky business. Fall even slightly short on power, poise or prestige and your product is likely to be unceremoniously swept aside by the Germanic juggernaut. Jaguar’s XFR looks the model most likely to break into this rarefied market where the participants compete as much for brand kudos as they do for salesy. The XFR has the attributes to win out but the battle could be a means in itself for Jaguar as the more accessible XF models bask in the range-topper’s reflected glory.

New look makes a great buy WHEN Toyota's original Yaris was launched, it was unquestionably the finest supermini money could buy. Times have changed, and to restore dominance, the latest Yaris, from around £9,000 and first shown at the 2005 Frankfurt Show, has grown up. First impressions are that Toyota have taken the old Yaris and plugged it into a garage forecourt airline. It's bigger in every dimension and markedly more bulbous. It's also way better in terms of perceived quality. The double-sealed doors feel thicker and weightier and shut with a thunk rather than a clang. The unconventional fascia looks removed from the supermini norm, with a 3D effect on the main display. Despite its 11cm growth in overall length, the Yaris is still shorter than the latest generation of larger superminis such as the Fiat Grande Punto and the Renault Clio. Part of the reason why these cars

toyota

Friday, February 6, 2009

THE YARIS are so large is compliance with pedestrian impact legislation which is adding a few centimetres to the nose of many cars. The Yaris gets round this one by arcing the bonnet high over the unyielding mechanicals to provide a deformable surface. This means that despite being shorter on the outside, the Yaris is competitive in terms of interior space and easy to park at the same time. Fold the EasyFlat rear seats down and you're treated to the largest stowage area of any supermini. This system allows the rear bench to be split 60:40 and both sections to slide independently. It's possible to transport long, bulky items without impinging on a rear passenger's legroom allowance. Three petrol engines are available a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit, a more

conventional 1.3-litre four-cylinder powerplant and the 131bhp 1.8-litre range topper. Diesel buyers are catered for with a 1.4-litre turbodiesel. In case you were wondering, the 1.0-litre unit is all-new but the others have been carried over from the previous generation Yaris. That's no bad thing, as the Yaris always had some of the best engines in its class. For the time being, let's concentrate on that three-pot 1.0-litre lump. Built in Japan, this engine will appeal to buyers who are attracted by the city credentials of the Yaris. With keen fuel economy, low inertia and low emissions, it's a better choice than the

diesel for the urban sprawl and crawl. Marry that to Toyota's claim that the Yaris has the tightest turning circle of the whole supermini set and you have a very agile and wieldy city scoot. For the latest Yaris to succeed, Toyota need to communicate that this car has been redesigned from the ground up. Failing that, many potential buyers may pass it off as a facelift of the old model and bypass their Toyota dealer on the way to a competitor. That would be a shame because the Yaris has a lot to offer. The opposition have caught up and it's no longer a clear class leader, but it's still one of the most sensible purchases a supermini buyer can make.

THE MICRA WHEN you design a futuristic supermini, as Nissan have done with their third generation Micra, you shouldn’t have to tamper with it too much. Nor have they - though some well judged enhancements have, in recent times, improved the car’s showroom appeal. They’re so subtle it’s doubtful if they’ll attract too many new buyers to the brand who weren’t already sold on the Micra’s cheeky good looks. The first visual change to styling can be seen on the front grille which moves away from the chrome centre line over to a chrome surround, providing what Nissan hope is a cleaner look. This continues with the front headlamps that now have a less profound profile to the parking aid ‘bump’ that sits on the lens, making it smoother and incorporating a light blue tint. The sporty front bumper, seen on the 160SR, has now been installed on most models, while the B Pillar trim on the hatchback is no longer colour coded, giving an improved side profile. Inside, there’s revised interior trim, an MP3 jack socket and sports sculptured seats on most models. Unless you go for the cheapest variant, you’ll also now find a Bluetooth hands free telephone system, a double DIN audio unit and an audible speed limit warning fitted as standard. Set your maximum speed setting by using the steering wheel button and a bleep will sound as you reach your desired limit; useful when going through reduced speed areas. Under the bonnet, it’s as you were. Three petrol engines and one diesel option power the Micra, power outputs ranging from 65PS to 110PS. The common rail 1.5-litre, eight valve four cylinder turbo diesel - developed by Alliance partner Renault - develops 86bhp. Nissan’s CR family of petrol engines is available in either 1.2 or 1.4-litre forms. The 1.2 is available in two levels of tune developing 65 and 80bhp respectively, while the 1.4 develops 88bhp. All are 16 valve four cylinder all-alloy units and comply with Euro IV emissions regula-

Customers browsing at their local Nissan store will be able to select from various Micra lines in the standard range: VISIA, ACENTA, TEKNA, ACTIVE LUXURY and SR. With all, there’s a

choice of three doors or (for a £650 premium) five. Alternatively, there’s the drop top C+C. As long as you don’t place interior space at the top of your priority list, the Micra deserves consideration. In sacrificing space for style, it’ll disappear off the shortlists of some and onto those of others. The fact the Micra has changed

from an old person’s car to one favoured by younger buyers can only be good for Nissan, but the figures need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Moving the mean purchasing age from 52.5 years down to the mid 40s doesn’t make the Micra the supermini du jour for twentysomething urban trendies but it’s in the right direction.

Weekend for bargains

... and brand new Insignia goes on show MOORLAND MOTORS MOORLAND Motors will be holding their Big Event Weekend next Saturday and Sunday, February 14 and 15. Star of the show will be the all-new Vauxhall Insignia. This will be the first opportunity to see this fabulous new car in the showroom and Moorland Motors’ team are eager to demonstrate its state-of-the-art features to all their customers. The Vauxhall Insignia marks the start of a new era for Vauxhall and there are plenty of reasons for optimism. The manufacturer has worked hard to broaden the appeal of the Insignia beyond that of the fleet-favourite Vectra and it certainly looks to have been successful. Its efforts to inject extra style and flair to the look of the car should be much appreciated, the front camera arrangement is neat and the

optional four-wheel-drive system is an interesting addition to the medium range sector. This car is as sharp to drive as its Mondeo rival and the clever FlexRide system gives it a real technological edge. Overall, what’s crucial is that the basics of this car seem to work. The Insignia looks a very desirable, cleverly designed package that will give its rivals something to really think about. The launch weekend of the Vauxhall Insignia will also see the promotion of the exciting new car ranges of Vauxhall, Chevrolet and Saab as well as a massive choice of approved used cars, all at incredibly low prices. There really has never been a better time to replace your car as both prices and deals have

never been better! It is also nearing that time when the registration plate changes and the new ‘09’ plate will be available from March 1, 2009. The Moorland Motors’ Big Event Weekend will be an ideal opportunity to select your new car ready for its ‘09’ plate. Buying a new car is an exciting experience and Moorland Motors’ sales team will ensure that it is also a rewarding and satisfying one. They have a wide range of models available from Vauxhall, Chevrolet and Saab along with a comprehensive choice of specifications and options. Their sales team will be happy to demonstrate the car of your choice and arrange a test drive while you are there.

If you require finance to assist with the purchase of your car, then the dealership can offer you a range of competitively priced packages that can be tailored to your specific circumstances. To make the process as smooth as possible, they will also take your existing vehicle in partexchange. Why not make it a date for the Moorland Motors’ Big Event Weekend? Cars, both new and used, have never been such good value. You can find Moorland Motors on Whitehills Business Park, Lytham St Annes Way in Blackpool, FY4 5PQ or, for more information, telephone (01253) 696747. Seeking attention ICONIC status is a tough thing to lay claim to when you're part of a comparatively recent and somewhat oversubscribed trend. Almost every self-respecting mainstream car manufacturer has a compact SUV to peddle these days and the explosion in these road-going 4x4s has happened over a relatively short timeframe. Chevrolet's is called the Captiva and while iconic would be stretching things, you could argue for its Ikonic status – in special edition Captiva Ikon guise that is. The engine range kicks off in unspectacular style with a rather aged 2.4-litre petrol engine then perks up considerably with the 2.0-litre VCDi diesel. Crucially to the Ikon's prospects, it's front wheel-drive only, the decision to forgo the complex and weighty 4x4 system doing much to keep costs down. The petrol option has 133bhp and will detain you for 11.5s while it zips up to 60mph. The diesel has 150bhp and a 10.8s 0-60mph time which is half a second quicker than a four-

wheel-drive Captiva fitted with the same engine. The Captiva isn't one of these SUVs that tries to tone down its styling in a bid to look more like a conventional car and on the Ikon model the traditional 4x4 accessories get even more extrovert. The 20" alloy wheels are the real showstoppers, they look quite a size shod with their low profile tyres, even when encased by the Captiva's cavernous wheelarches. It's a good job the Ikon isn't four-wheel-drive as these aren't the wheels to take along a rocky track. The side steps do nothing for ground clearance either and you could easily find yourself retracing your steps in search of the chrome tail pipe after it's been knocked off by a boulder. The Captiva Ikon is more for looking good around town than showing its prowess out in the wilds. There's even darkened privacy glass to deflect some of the attention the car's designed to get. Based on the entry-level LS model from the standard Captiva range, the

www.motorstoday.co.uk

chevrolet CAPTIVA ICON

FACTS Ikon benefits from features such as air-conditioning, electric windows, remote central locking, electric door mirrors and a CD stereo with controls on the steering wheel. Even with the extra styling accessories valued at £3,000 that Chevrolet has added to the car, it's still £1,000 cheaper than an LS in petrol form and over £1,400 less as a diesel. In terms of fuel economy, Captiva buyers will get 31mpg from the petrol model or 37mpg from the diesel while emissions for the two engines are 217g/km and 197g/km respectively. Most buyers will pick the oil-burner

even if it is considerably more expensive as a result of its superior performance and economy but it has the added benefit of being a more desirable proposition on the used market so residuals will be strong. With its extrovert styling accessories, Chevrolet's Captiva Ikon will get more than its fair share of attention out on the road. This is a compact SUV but there's very little that's compact about it unless you count the price which is over £1,000 less than the standard entry-level model despite over £3,000 worth of equipment having been thrown in.

GIRL TALK with June Neary

THE Dodge Journey is a large sevenseater MPV. Not one of those five seat people carriers with a couple of fold-away chairs in the boot but a proper sevenseater with seven seats that you can fit seven fully-grown people in. To achieve this kind of interior capacity, the designers have made it quite a size. At close to five meters long, it looked a daunting prospect as I approached it across the office car park. The other thing to mention is that the Dodge has a bit more roadpresence than you’d expect from a large MPV. It has the look of a 4x4 about it with its chunky grille and flared wheelarches.

Honest workhorse

level price and to sate those who still can’t abide diesel. It has a respectable 168bhp at its disposal but lacks the mid-range strength of the 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel. This is a pleasanter engine from a driving perspective than its petrol counterpart, though is a little noisier.

DODGE JOURNEY

VALUE FOR MONEY Prices for the Journey look attractive, sitting in the £17,000 to £23,000 bracket. That’s about 10 per cent less than obvious rivals. The old American tactic of supplying lots of metal for the money has obviously been central to the thinking behind the vehicle. Equipment is hardly lacking either with three-zone climate control, tyrepressure sensors, a 6 CD stereo and electric everything all coming as standard. Another boon is the safety kit which includes ESP stability control and curtain airbags.

THE PRACTICALITIES It’s the interior that Dodge Journey buyers will be most interested in. Those seven seats all present a decent amount of space so long as you’re not intending to keep a pair of adults cooped up in the third row for any length of time. The all-important middle row is particularly spacious. It can be split 60/40, with each section able to slide individually back and forth for more flexibility. Access to the rearmost seats is also very good with a tug on the lever on the outside seats of the middle row prompting them to fold and slide right forward, leaving plenty of room

9

COULD I LIVE WITH ONE?

to enter with dignity. Of course, with all three rows in place, baggage room is at a premium, with only 303 litres available. If luggage is your priority, all of the seats can of course be folded flat to present an extensive load floor

with 1914 litres of space. This includes the passenger seat which can be dropped down to further boost the available volume or give parents an unrestricted view to the little monsters in the back.

BEHIND THE WHEEL The Journey is propelled by one of two engines, a petrol or a diesel. The 2.4-litre petrol option is nothing to get over-excited about and is included largely to deliver an attractive entry-

The Dodge Journey has a bit more character about it than the majority of large MPV products and looks attractively priced compared to its rivals too. It’s not the slickest package in this sector in terms of build quality or driving dynamics but it’s a big, honest, user-friendly car that’s well worthy of your consideration. Anything that can render a long car journey with four kids in the back any less traumatic gets my vote.

THE 6 RANGE

More smiles per gallon

New model is fabulously frugal SO WHAT'S changed about the latest Mazda6? Well, it's more spacious, 65mm longer, 15mm wider, 5 mm taller with a 50mm longer wheelbase than the first generation model. It's also safer, more practical, better built and, faster. Chris Allen, founder and managing Ddirector of the Chris Allen Garages group, said: “The good news is that the diesel models deliver astonishing miles per gallon and far lower co2 emissions”. The zoom-zoom tagline used on the MK1 model wasn't just an advertising strap: this genuinely was the first Mazda family car you could look forward to driving. This has been an approach further developed in the second generation model. Mazda engineers have correctly identified that driving experience is mainly about suspension, steering and transmission. Mr Allen added: ‘There's a fully independent suspension system for improved ride comfort and reduced road noise. The hydraulic power steering set-up has been replaced with the Mazda RX-8 sports car's electric system in order to achieve optimal steering assistance at the widest number

of speed variations.” And the gearbox? There's a new sixspeed manual transmission that offers an especially precise shift operation with built-in positive stops for the extremes of the gearlever's movements. Greater performance from engines like the latest 2.5-litre petrol motor has led to the need for more stopping power, so the latest Mazda6 is fitted with larger front brake discs. Mindful that rivals were getting larger, Mazda's designers knew they needed a larger cabin, yet the shape needed to retain the sharp sportiness of the original version. By and large, they've succeeded. The windscreen is deeper and higher, creating a feeling of spaciousness actually delivered by a slightly wider body that offers occupants greater shoulder room. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, knee room for the rear passengers is also increased - by 13mm. In the rear, the 60/40 split seatbacks fold forward with a simple, single movement (using Mazda's neat karakuri folding system), presenting a flat luggage floor. Prices range in the £15,000 to £20,000 bracket, with saloons priced equally to

Cool and efficient AT least 50 per cent of what makes up a good cabriolet is image. How it looks, how you look in it, what it says about you and how many heads it can turn on a trip down a typical urban thoroughfare on a warm July afternoon. People don’t buy cabriolets for practical reasons, they buy cabriolets as fashion statements, as tools for showing off in. All of which kind of makes you wonder about Audi’s 3.0litre TDI Cabriolet. Is it a bit too efficient for its own good? The A4 Cabriolet has got the image stakes pretty much wrappedup but what about its engine – the 230bhp 3.0-litre TDI diesel? Put simply, it’s an excellent unit, virtually as fast as the 3.2-litre V6 FSI petrol engine and yet returning average fuel economy figures that are superior to the weedy entry-level 1.8litre Turbo. Better still, it’s packing 450Nm of torque between 1,400 and 3,250rpm which is more than the 4.2-litre V8 in the S4 cabriolet. This engine gives the A4 Cab effortless cruising ability, with vast waves of torque washing around the mid-range to surge you through overtaking manoeuvres and devour

A4 CABRIOLET 3.0L TDI the severest of inclines. It’s the perfect engine for a Cabriolet in many ways, relaxed and powerful but with good fuel economy to inject a degree of commonsense that’s not usually prevalent in this sector of the market. The 3.0-litre TDI’s problem is that those acutely image-conscious cabriolet buyers who are drawn to the A4 Cabriolet probably won’t want to drive a diesel one. You can sort of make a case for the cheaper 2.0-litre TDI, in that people who can just squeeze into the A4 Cabriolet’s financial ballpark may well opt for the best fuel economy they can get, thus clawing back a few quid longer-term in running costs. The 3.0-litre TDI, though, is second only to the S4 in terms of price. That’s going to look expensive to many, even though the engine’s impressive figures would appear to justify the premium. The interior is typically well constructed and the hood is folded away neatly and without fuss at speeds of up to 20mph by holding a

FACTS CAR: Audi A4 Cabriolet 3.0litre TDI switch next to the handbrake. Rear legroom is fairly awful but the space provided for those in the front is far more like it. There’s also a decent-sized boot when the hood’s up. The ride is smooth as a cabriolet’s should be, although the S-Line models do firm things up a touch for buyers wanting a sportier experience. Most of the feedback that reaches the driver comes through the suspension as the steering feels quite dead but there’s plenty of scope to press-on and have some fun. Given a money-no-object pick of all

the models in the A4 Cabriolet range, it’s hard to see beyond the 3.0 TDI on an objective basis at least. The S4 is just that little bit silly and the big TDI is as quick or quicker than all the others, without quite such prohibitive fuel consumption as the petrol choices. This car is all about cool, however, and there will be those that think plumbing in an oil-burning engine tarnishes the ice cold aura which is its key selling point. Buyers will have to make up their own minds but the 3.0TDI is an individualist choice and that, in the end, could actually be the coolest way to go.

Versatile performance PLAYING catch up can sometimes prove very difficult. When the mini-MPV market first boomed, Ford stood back and watched, confident that sales of these curious little boxes would be a passing fad. Buyers would soon realise that something Focus shaped or Mondeo sized made a far more satisfactory alternative than the frumpier lines of a mini-MPV. They were wrong. Six years after Renault popularised the genre with the Scenic, Ford responded with the C-MAX. To keep this car current, Ford have updated the car with sassier styling in recent times but the essentials remain the same. There’s a choice of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0-litre power whether you opt for diesel or petrol. It’s the 1.8-litre petrol car that we take a look at here. Powered by a 125PS four-cylinder engine, it’s usefully quicker than cars like the 1.6-litre Volkswagen Touran against which it competes pricewise and the engine is both smooth and blessed with a decent slug of torque invaluable for hauling a fully laden vehicle uphill. It will zip from standstill to 60mph in a respectable 10.6 seconds and keep going until it runs out of steam at 119mph. Despite the impressive power and torque figures churned out by the 1.8-litre engine, it manages to return some very respectable economy figures. A combined fuel consumption figure of 39.2 mpg makes it more

There is a caveat, though, and for some buyers it will rule the C-MAX out of contention. Whereas the Volkswagen Touran can be specified with seven seats and the Renault Grand Scenic is also thus equipped, the C-MAX only offers room for five. This raises a perplexing question. Just

as the Ford Fusion has found little favour with buyers who couldn’t really see what it offered over and above a normal Fiesta, there may well be a significant proportion of potential CMAX customers who can’t see the point of a car that seats no more bodies than a cooking Focus hatch. Ford’s marketing department remains utterly convinced that there’s an untapped market for vehicles that offer five seats with MPV-style headroom and versatility but which still

offer keen driving dynamics and styling that doesn’t resemble a downsized burger van. Think about how we use our cars for a moment. Many of us rarely even use the back seats for anything but shopping bags and jackets. If you’ve got a family in tow, you may well need four or even five seats but if you seriously need seven seats, it makes sense to go with the additional carrying capacity of a full sized MPV like Ford’s S-MAX or Galaxy models.

The C-MAX 1.8 is a worthy contender in the mini-MPV sector but it still faces an uphill battle. With a bunch of established rivals and no seven seat option available, it will leave many buyers scratching their heads in puzzlement. Let’s hope that enough people can recognise the CMAX as the achievement that it is. The 1.8-litre petrol engine fitted to this car offers punchy performance and admirable economy. Let’s hope it’s enough.

Reliable and easy to ride WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Easy-to-ride, easy on the pocket, nippy and good-looking, sales of the frugal ANF 125i Innova have been healthy for a number of years. Popular with both experienced and newly established riders, this model is now one of Europe's best-selling 'stepthrough' scooters. In 2007 Honda introduced a raft of styling changes to enhance the Innova's appearance and at the same time they took the opportunity to update its robust and typically reliable Honda engine in order to provide increased economy and more power. New electronic PGM-FI fuel injection was fitted to make for easier starting and to improve the responsiveness of its performance. An Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) was also introduced to enhance engine response at low revs and to improve the evenness at idling speed. The Innova is certainly fuel efficient. At a speed of 33mph the 125cc unit

Friday, February 6, 2009

sips fuel at the rate of just one litre every 46 miles. An externally-mounted low-emission Air Induction System forces fresh air into the engine's exhaust port to increase the amount of exiting exhausts gases burnt, which reducing exhaust emissions to well within stringent European EURO-3 emission regulation. When it comes to changing the gears no manual clutch operation is required. The Innova's 4-speed rotary transmission is equipped with a semiautomatic centrifugal clutch and gear changes are made via the pressing of a see-saw changer peddle. The peddle features a toe shifter at the front and a heel pad at the back which helps to make gear shifts easy while protecting shoes from damaging scratches and scrapes. The gearboxes' rotary composition allows for handy downshifts from fourth gear to neutral following a complete stop so there is no need to make laboriously changes down through all the gears.

As for the Innova's improved styling, Honda's designers have attempted to make its appearance even sleeker. Slight but effectual revisions to the scooter's front and side styling along with changes to its leg shields and lights accentuate the step-through model's sporting aspirations. From 2007, louvered vents introduced to the side of its body have also augmented the Innova's chic style along with a redesigned aluminium grab rail. This rail offers the pillion rider safe and secure hand grip during trips. Underneath the tilting seat is a large and convenient seven litre lockable storage area. As you might expect with Honda, the Innova is very well constructed. It's available in four highly attractive twotone colour schemes - Force Silver Metallic with Terra Silver Metallic, Candy Caribbean Blue Seas with Candy Lighting Blue, Asteroid Metallic with Titanium Metallic and Candy Beam Red with Candy Foggy Orange.

ANF 125I INNOVA

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Here in the UK customers can expect to fork out for an on-the-roadprice of ÂŁ1,929 for the Honda ANF 125i Innova, which is very competitive against models from all its mainstream rival manufacturers.

HOW DOES IT HANDLE?

The Innova's lightweight and inherent stability makes it easy to ride under all conditions. The suspension system's rear dampers soak up bumps and irregularities of the road surface very well to provide a comfortable and compliant ride, while the 26mm leading axle hydraulic front fork conveys rapid, safe and secure steering control. The scooter's front braking comes courtesy of a powerful, quick to respond dual-piston calliper measuring

220m while a 110mm drum brake provides the Innova's rear braking power. The system works efficiently to offer excellent control under just about all road conditions.

VERDICT With motoring costs mounting, crowded roads and the growing awareness of the need to take care of our environment, it can hardly be seen as surprising that more motorists are turning to two wheels rather than four to make their daily commute. The Honda ANF 125i Innova's ultralow running costs, competitive price, easy-going nature and attractive styling will continue to make it a class leader within the step-through scooter sector of the market.

used cars The Gazette

Your essential Friday guide to buying second-hand vehicles

DESIRABLE BUT POTENTIALLY PRICEY

COMPACT 4x4

The sky’s the limit here. Prime pick would be the Land Rover Freelander, especially in the vastly improved Freelander 2 guise.

MOTORING fashion is a fickle thing. Cast your mind back to the eighties and everybody was after a GTi hatch or an executive saloon with utterly superfluous four-wheel drive. Fast forward to the early nineties and the compact 4x4 started to gain in popularity, before being steamrollered in the sales charts by MPVs, citycars and roadsters. The latest generation of compact 4x4s are way better than before and this sector’s star is on the rise again.

This model features Land Rover’s brilliant ‘Terrain Response’ system which really takes the hassle out of off-road driving. It’s also far better built than the original Freelander. Otherwise there’s the increasingly impressive BMW X3 to look at, which has garnered a reputation as the driver’s choice amongst compact 4x4s.

CHEAP & CHEERFUL The cheapest new five-door Land Rover Freelander2 today for example, will still cost you a sizeable sum - and probably much more if you’re to go for the engine and specification you really want. All of which would seem to point to the sense of buying a car like this second-hand, particularly since models like this are built to last. Yet used compact 4x4s aren’t cheap, nor will they be until buyers stop believing that the impressive all-round abilities of these vehicles are exactly what they need.

AFFORDABLE MID-RANGERS Just because your budget won’t stretch to the latest and most sophisticated

Then there’s the second generation Nissan X-Trail that’s bigger and plusher inside than the original and the Toyota RAV4 that debuted early in 2006.

Star on the rise again options it doesn’t mean you’re not in for a whole heap of fun. Given a sunny day and a technical, wooded off-road track, there’s not a lot that’s more enjoyable than a soft top Suzuki Jimny. Surprisingly rugged and capable of switching to rear-wheel

drive for fun on the gravel track back home, the Jimny can paint a smile on even the most cynical face. If you prefer something a little more sophisticated on-road, why not try Daihatsu’s slimline Terios? There are no shortage of well looked after examples of both

of these cars so the usual caveats regarding buying a used 4x4 – such as dented body panels or battered underbody parts - rarely apply. Other options that are well worth looking at if funds are limited are early Toyota RAV4s and the dependable Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin.

WHAT TO PAY Cheap & Cheerful: [Older] Suzuki Jimny JLX – £2,500-£3,300 (00 to 52plate); [Newer] Daihatsu Terios 1.3 SL – £3,900-£4,400 (51 to 03-plate). Affordable Mid-Rangers: [Older] Honda CR-V ES – £3.900-£5,100 (T to 01plate); [Newer] Nissan X-Trail 2.2Di SVE – £9,500-£12,000 (53 to 05-plate). Desirable But Potentially Pricey: [Older] BMW X3 3.0i SE – £15,000-£18,000 (04 to 55-plate); [Newer] LR Freelander2 Td4 SE – £22,000-£24,000 (06 to 07-plate).
