Top names unveil cars of future THE most powerful Aston Martin and a “baby’’ Rolls-Royce were among a host of cars unveiled at the Geneva motor show. Aston Martin took the wraps off its One-77 (above), a 200mph model that will go from 0mph to 60mph in 3.5 seconds. Rolls-Royce displayed an experimental car, the 200EX (left) , which points the way for RR4, a series that is due for production next year. The One-77, produced at Gaydon in Warwickshire, is powered by a 7.3-litre V12 engine and is expected to cost in excess of £1 million. Among other vehicles unveiled at the show was the Vauxhall Ampera, an electric car that will go on sale in the UK in 2012 and Land Rover’s Range Rover “Westminster’’ limited edition vehicle.
Dangers of hands-free
MORE than two in five motorists think hands-free mobile phone kits should be banned in cars, it was revealed today. While drivers are not allowed to use hands-held mobiles at the wheel, hands-free kits are legal. But 71 of motorists polled by esure car insurance reckon hands-free kits are a distraction to drivers and 41 per cent think they should be banned. Also, 48 per cent believe the kits are needlessly putting drivers’ safety at risk. Esure said police records showed nearly 3,000 motorists in England and Wales were prosecuted in 2007 for failing to have proper control of their vehicle while being distracted by hands-free phone calls.
Fines threat
MOTORISTS could be facing combined fines of almost £1 billion through failing to change their driving licence details after moving home, the RAC Foundation has warned. Latest Government figures have shown that as many as 19 per cent of all licences are thought to carry incorrect address details. That means around 7.9 million drivers are facing fines of up to £1,000. When people move they are required by legislation to send details of their new address to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Drive on the right lines SEIZING on the current trend for reflection, Peugeot has launched its DriveSexy campaign. Not a call for greater sexual expression on the roads but an invitation to reconsider the way we drive with the aim of encouraging courtesy and understanding among road users. The brand also hopes to sell extra cars in the process and leading the charge will be the 308 Verve special edition. The Verve special edition isn’t available with the 308’s sexier engines. Instead, it’s the less powerful and more environmentally-friendly options that get the nod. The range opens with the 95bhp 1.4-litre VTi petrol unit which is occupied for over 14s getting the 308 to 60mph from a standing start. The 1.6 VTi has 120bhp at its disposal and can cover the 0-60mph sprint in a livelier 10.8s while diesel customers are catered for by the 90bhp 1.6 HDi which has a 0-60mph sprint of 14s but substantially more torque than either petrol. The long slits of the headlights and that massive frontal air-intake are nothing if not distinctive and the Verve models enhance the look of the exterior with their 16 inch Izalco alloy wheels. There’s also Verve badging to further underline the car’s special edition status. Value for money is what the 308 Verve is all about but how does it shape up? It features the front fog lights, air-conditioning, CD stereo, remote central locking, trip computer and electric front windows included on the S derivatives but adds Verve floor mats, larger 16 inch alloy wheels and Verve badging. T hese extras come at a price premium of £200 over and above the equivalent S model which has 15 inch alloys. That seems a reasonable bit of business but the real savings will

come in the shape of the special finance deals that Peugeot is offering to accompany the Verve. The car is only available in five-door guise but there’s a choice of paint colours which runs from Nera Black and Babylon Red to Hurricane Grey. Peugeot thinks we should be more considerate and relaxed when we’re driving, enjoying the experience a little more, and it’s hard to argue with that. The brand’s DriveSexy campaign is aiming to spread the word and to help sell some of Peugeot’s Verve special edition models in the process. The 308 Verve brings bigger alloys, smart floor mats and exterior badges for a nominal fee over a conventional S model. It’s not going the capture too many headlines in its own right but Peugeot’s marketing push seems likely to send enough customers in its direction. Prices range is £15,095-£16,345.
Hard top that’s easy on the user MX-5 ROADSTER COUPE CARS with folding hard top roofs can be rather grotty things. Curiously malformed with distended bottoms and pinched cabins, they usually lose their looks and their practicality once the roof’s up and all you’re left with is toothbrush room in the boot once the hood has done its contortionist’s trick. Oh yes, these cars offer the customer more. More weight, more complexity and more expense, that is. Therefore, we shuddered when Mazda first announced a ‘Roadster Coupe’ version of the MX-5. Seems we needn’t have worried after all. It’s the exception that proves the rule. The same 159bhp 2.0-litre and 124bhp 1.8-litre engines shift the Roadster Coupe as power the standard MX-5. The famously wristy short throw sports gear change has been retained on the manual models with the 1.8-litre cars getting a five-speed box and the 2.0-litre alternatives coming with a choice of this, a six-speed
manual or the PowerShift sequential automatic. This auto option can be operated in manual mode via the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters or set to act like a standard automatic gearbox. Both of the MX-5’s engines thrive on revs as any good roadster powerplant should, the 2.0litre option gives its peak power at a heady 7,000rpm, just 500rpm short of the red line so owners are rewarded for a heavy right foot. The roof retracts in three sections with no impact on boot
space and adds just 37kg to the weight of an equivalent soft top MX-5 roadster. Raise the roof and it sits a mere centimetre taller than its fabric-trimmed sibling. Although it’s tempting to think of this car as ‘just a roof’, a lot of thought has clearly gone into it. The spring and damper settings are subtly revised to take account of the hard top car’s marginally altered weight distribution. Thankfully, the roof retracts to a position within the wheelbase of the car so that it doesn’t detract too much from handling agility.

Friendly yet frugal TOYOTA’S 1.33-litre Yaris supermini is one of a growing number of cars to use stop and start technology to cut fuel consumption, emissions and even noise levels. The decision to call the 1.3-litre petrol engine in the Yaris the ‘1.33’ isto underline the fact that this is a substantially different and more advanced powerplant than the old 1.3-litre unit. It benefits from Toyota’s Dual VVT-i variable valve timing technology and has an extremely high compression ratio for a petrol engine enabling it to extract larger amounts of energy from its fuel than equivalent units. The Stop & Start technology is the highlight, and comes into play when the Yaris is stationary, the gear lever is in neural and the clutch is released. This gives the driver control over the engine stopping process. If traffic ahead is about to move, keep the clutch in and the Yaris 1.33 behaves like a conventional car. The Yaris’ compact curves are easy enough on the eye.

YARIS 1.33 DUAL VVT-i The latest models blend the front bumper and bonnet more seamlessly than before while also incorporating protection mouldings designed to take the financial sting out of minor parking knocks. The front spoiler has also been lowered slightly giving a fractionally sportier look and together with a flatter design for the dirty side of the car, this helps aerodynamics, further improving efficiency. The Yaris trim level hierarchy currently runs from T2 to TR, SR and T Spirit but the 1.33-litre Stop & Start drivetrain can’t be matched to the basic T2 trim level. That makes TR the entry point and at this level buyers get a six-speaker stereo with MP3 compatibility and an AUX port, airconditioning, body-coloured mirrors
and a good line-up of safety kit. All Yaris models have ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, twin front airbags and side airbags but the TR adds curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag too. VSC stability control is only available as an option. Running costs have always been one of the things the Toyota Yaris did well. The 1.33-litre engine helps in this regard, contributing to a modern
Yaris range in which every model dips under the 120g/km barrier for CO2 emissions. Combine this factor with Toyota’s exemplary reliability record and perky residual values and you’d have to say that cost of ownership is an area where the Yaris can shine. With emissions of 119g/km and fuel economy of 55.4mpg, the 1.33 Yaris turns in a very strong performance for a 100bhp petrol-engined

Don’t get me wrong, the leading contenders in the medium range family car market so beloved of fleet customers are extremely competent vehicles but even with the recent moves away from these products into MPVs, 4x4s and compact executive offerings, it still seems like everyone’s got one. There must be room for an alternative, something with a little more attitude and individuality. Dodge thinks it can provide exactly that with its Avenger.
THE PRACTICALITIES
Walk around the Avenger and it looks anything but a medium range family saloon. Those trademark swimmer’s shoulders give it an athletic, toned appearance and the bold crosshairs front grille and the aggressive jut of the front bumper definitely give it real rear view mirror presence. The interior ergonomics of the Avenger are good and there’s plenty of passenger space. The quality of the interior materials isn’t great but the car feels honest and seems well screwed together. The 438-litre boot can be expanded by dropping the rear seats down.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
There’s a 2.0-litre diesel engine sourced from Volkswagen that’s the pick of the range and an entry-level

It might be lacking finesse compared to the medium range stalwarts but it undercuts them significantly on price and chucks in plenty of standard equipment.
Like all Dodge products, the Avenger embraces the good-old American philosophy of giving the customer lots of metal for the money.
You’d have to say that the Dodge Avenger is behind the curve in some areas but it’s firmly ahead in terms of

Familiarity breeds contempt, they say, and I for one would think twice before putting another one of those identikit medium range offerings on the road. A stylish estate STARTING as it means to go on in the UK, Chevrolet has hit the ground running with a car set to shake up rivals in the compact estate segment. The Station Wagon is a small estate that isn't, well, that small. It isn't that expensive either, priced at around £12,000 for the 1.6SX. Once upon a time 'styled in Korea' meant a car whose looks could curdle milk but the Station Wagon is a different proposition. Credit for the estate conversion goes to the Chevrolet design centre in Bupyong and they've done a very effective job. Take a walk around the Station Wagon and you'll be amazed at the cohesiveness of the design. It helps that the existing lines of the Lacetti saloon with its rising hipline lend themselves well to an estate conversion but the stylists have attempted to give this estate a little personality of its own. The chromed grille takes a little getting used to if you're accustomed

LACETTI STATION WAGON 1.6SX to the front of four and five-door Lacetti models, while the rear lamps are stacked vertically, thus ensuring a decent wide hatch. The loading bay is generously proportioned, this most modern of estates subscribing to the old school 'more is better' philosophy when it comes to hauling ability. A recent package of changes aims to further strengthen the car's value proposition. Buyers can now expect to find little touches like alloy wheels, preparation for trailer connections, rear seat heating ducts, a rear seat coathook and a space saver spare tyre. There's 400 litres of space available with the rear seats in place but a whopping 1,410 litres available should you drop them down. The rear

bench features a 60/40 split for added versatility and there's an auxiliary 12v power supply in the luggage bay. Plus there are no fewer than 25 individual storage spaces. This engine will get the car to a respectable 116mph and yet will also return a combined fuel economy figure of 34.5mpg. What you can't have (yet) is diesel power and until

With a resurgence of interest in compact estate cars, the Station Wagon looks set to capitalise. Although the lack of a diesel engine will strike it off a few lists, it's still a compelling proposition. Rivals that offer as much space for the same money aren't plentiful. Soft top has fire in belly IF you thought a MINI Convertible was mainly a car for cruising around the fashionable districts of our urban centres and looking good, possibly in a slightly limp wristed kind of a way, then think again. The MINI Convertible John Cooper Works is a turbocharged drop-top with real fire in its belly. MINI says it’s the fastest small premium cabriolet in the world, which is a little like claiming to be the tallest one-armed unicyclist in north of Doncaster but one tickle of the accelerator and you’ll get what they’re on about. The Convertible MINIs weigh around 100kg more than the hardtopped cars thanks to the roof mechanism and the strengthening measures employed to keep the body rigid in the absence of a fixed roof. This means that the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine has a little more work to do in the JCW Convertible than in the JCW Hatch but with 211bhp at its disposal, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem. The same engine produces 175bhp in the standard Cooper S (and in the Peugeot 207 GTi in case you’re interested) but the John Cooper Works tuning kit makes revisions to the air filter, the air mass meter, installs a modified turbocharger with a larger airintake pipe and tweaks the exhaust system to achieve its extra thrust.

There’s also a Sport button which activates a special engine control map, sharpens the steering and quickens the throttle response for those times when you’re feeling like a real hooligan. The MINI JCW Convertible can be spotted by its special 17” alloy wheels which, together with their run-flat tyres, tip the scales at just 10 kilos each. The John Cooper Works logo also makes an appearance on the grille, the boot, the brake callipers and the door sills. In addition, there’s a host of styling accessories that, in typical MINI fashion, allow buyers to personalise their vehicles. The interior is finished in Piano Black with an Alcantara sports steering wheel. This MINI Convertible is no fashionable urban runabout, although it’s likely that many will still be used as such. The JCW tuning kit transforms it into a potent compact performance car and while owners are asked to pay handsomely for the privilege, where do you get a convertible with this kind of capability for less?
