SMALL it may be but the Matiz citycar is of big importance for Chevrolet. Over 1.3 million examples of this car's predecessor now pound roads around the globe with up to 75 per cent of buyers being women. The current MK2 version must improve on this legacy – and it's well prepared to do just that. The first time you see one, you might already guess that this is a Matiz: the family likeness, especially from the side, is very evident and the cheeky front end still smiles away at you. This is also still a small car, in a sector where other rivals are growing into superminis. But if you wanted a supermini, you'd have bought one. Chevrolet feel with good reason that citycars should be small, so this car remains very compact – 1495mm wide and 3495mm long. Of course, you don't want it to feel that small inside and fortunately, this Matiz doesn't. As before, it comes with five doors, by no means a given in this class. All are wide-opening with low sills to aid easy entry and exit in tight supermarket car parks. So far so good. It ranges from the entry-level 0.8S model through to the 1.0SE version that most customers will probably choose. At the top of the range, laden with air-conditioning and alloy wheels, sits the 1.0SE+. This car has a different, free, fun and chuckable joie de vivre very unlike the more responsible but ultimately rather dull feel of something in the Fiesta/Corsa class. As with the original Matiz, it's hard to pin down exactly where this comes from. Probably, it's a combination of a more flexible design brief, the compact size and the cheeky styling. A weight saving of around 13 kilos, along with a sleeker 0.344 drag coefficient, has contributed considerably to fuel consumption
across the board that's 15 per cent better. The 1.0-litre model averages over 50mpg on the combined cycle while the 0.8-litre variant records nearly 55mpg. Plus this car is safer, with far more widespread use (51 per cent as opposed to 37 per cent) of high strength steel. Which brings us on to comfort. You don't expect a citycar to cosset you like a luxury saloon but you do expect at least to be able to have a conversation with your passengers at motorway cruising speeds and not to make everyone feel sick when you're running late over twisting secondary roads. The latest Matiz can now deliver in both these areas thanks to improved noise insulation and a new torsion beam rear axle. It isn't very rapid in 0.8-litre guise (where 18.2s is required
to get from rest to 60) but the 14.1s figure for the 65PS 1.0-litre model many will choose should be quite adequate for most. The 1.0-litre model averages over 50mpg on the combined cycle while the 0.8-litre variant records nearly 55mpg and now emits just 119g/km of CO2, slipping it down to tax band B. Most good 'A sector' models are these days good enough to make you question the need for something supermini-sized. This one adds a dash of spirit into the equation - which might be enough to make the difference, not only for traditional Matiz customers but for a whole host of new ones. AURIS provision, this car could make real inroads in the Ford Focus-dominated family hatchback sector. In creating the Auris, Toyota’s engineers started with the passengers and then worked outwards, maximising occupant space with elements such as a flat passenger floor and high window surfaces. The all-new platform has an overall length of 4,220mm incorporating a 2,600mm wheelbase. This means that the wheelbase represents 61.6 per cent of the car’s total length. The higher the percentage, the more space is afforded to people rather than oily bits. With an overall height of 1,515 and a width of 1,760mm, the Auris is one of the biggest family hatches around, although the shape does much to disguise this bulk. Both three and five door bodystyles are offered along with a range of five
engines. The two petrol engines comprise a 100bhp 1.33 VVT-i unit (which manages nearly 50mpg on the combined cycle thanks to ‘Stop & Start’ technology) and a 122bhp 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i powerplant that raises fuel efficiency and power output compared to the Corolla’s 1.6-litre mill. Diesel buyers get to choose from three engines. The entry-level lump is the 1.4-litre D4-D, good for 89bhp. Customers then step up to a 2.0-litre
D4-D 130 engine which despite its name has a power output of 124bhp and was first seen in the 2007 Avensis. Given that it drove this hefty car around with ease, it should make an Auris respectably brisk. At the top of the range is the 2.2litre D4-D 180 which churns out 175bhp and is one of the best compact diesel engines around, offering fully 36bhp more than its 2.2-litre diesel rival, the Honda Civic. speed manual transmissions are fitted as standard to the two more powerful diesels but a MultiMode system with paddle shifters is offered as an option for the 1.4-litre D4-D90 and the 1.6litre Dual VVT-i engines. Overall? Well, the Toyota Auris faces a very tough task if it’s to fulfil Toyota’s demanding expectations but don’t bet against it. This needs to be a car that the world’s biggest vehicle manufacturer can be proud of – and asks don’t come much bigger than that. Prices range from £12,435-£18,300.

women’s view WILL IT SUIT ME?
I INITIALLY found the Chrysler Sebring a tough car to get a handle on. It’s a big-ish American saloon but unlike its even larger cousin, the 300C, it’s lacking a little in the attitude department. Not that the Sebring is an ugly car: it just lacks anything by way of standout features to set it apart from the crowd. At least, these were my first impressions but we all know how wide of the mark they can be.
THE PRACTICALITIES
The cabin of the Sebring isn’t going to give Audi any sleepless nights but by previously low US standards, it’s a decent effort. The clocks are softy lit in blue, while the infotainment system on the centre console will be familiar to anyone who has driven a modern Mercedes. Metallic coloured plastics dominate the centre console while the cowled dials, fourspoke sports steering wheel and two-tone trim on the doors act as small design signatures that lift the fascia above the mundane.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
The engine line-up encompasses three powerplants, starting with a 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine with dual variable valve timing. A more powerful option is the 167bhp 2.4 petrol unit that compensates British buyers for the lack of the V6 petrol engine offered in other markets.

with June Neary Of more relevance to European buyers is the 138bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine shared with the Dodge Caliber. This is not the most refined car in its sector but even so, it’s probably the version to go for. Not only do you get decent fuel economy but there’s a level of torque (310Nm) that humbles even the 2.4-litre petrol model (220Nm).

The entry-level model is the 2.0-litre petrol, probably our pick of the range. Equipment levels are through the roof and Sebring buyers won’t be left wanting for much.

The Sebring is a refreshingly straightforward proposition devoid of the gimmicky add-ons that are to be found elsewhere in the medium range family car market. It may not be the most exciting choice but buyers in the hunt for a big, well-equipped saloon car at a low price might find that this Chrysler is up their street.

Drivers’ delight BMW is never shy about reminding anyone who'll listen that it builds ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’. It's quite a boast and one that can only deepen the resolve of rival brands in their efforts to knock the boys from Munich off their self-proclaimed perch. Such competition can only mean more exciting cars for us because if BMW's bullish promotional claims are to continue holding water, its products need to stay ahead of the pack. The desire to do exactly that is evident in the latest Z4 Roadster, a sports car that aims to raise the bar in a number of key areas. BMW's engines rarely leave much room for disappointment and the Z4 has a mouth-watering line-up at its disposal. The three six-cylinder options open with a 2.5-litre 204bhp unit and even at this level Z4 owners will be able to experience the far side of 60mph just 6.6s after a standing start. Next comes

THE Z4 the 258bhp 3.0-litre engine which is capable of a 5.8s 0-60mph sprint and the twin-turbo range topper which gets 306bhp and a 5.2s sprint from its 3.0-litre capacity. All Z4 models get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard but there are also a couple of automatic options. The 2.5 and 3.0 units get a sixspeed auto with wheel-mounted paddle shifters that blunts 0-60mph performance slightly, while the twinturbo 3.0-litre engine can be specified with a seven-speed twin clutch transmission so slick it actually improves the 0-60mph blast to just 5.1s. The Z4's roof will get almost as much attention as the contents of its engine bay because, following the lead of the BMW 3-Series Convertible, it's made out of metal. that says folding hard-top roofs are a bad idea in focused sports cars with a light weight electro-hydraulic arrangement that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds. The need to make space to stow a great slab of ironwork to keep the rain out can deal a fatal blow to the styling of a convertible, particularly a compact two-seater like the Z4 but BMW's designers appear to have avoided this. The tell tail distended rear end isn't in evidence and roof up or roof down, the Z4 looks taught and wellproportioned. The bulging rear
haunches hint at the car's potency while the subtle cutaways down the flanks make it a sleeker proposition than its angular predecessor. At the front, the wide grill and stretched headlamps help make this the most conventionally attractive Z4 yet. BMW's model naming policy for the Z4 requires a little explanation. All models are badged sDrive and as is often the case with the marque's products, the numerical designations appear to correspond to engine size but don't. The base model is the Z4 sDrive23i
and has the 2.5-litre engine then comes the sDrive30i with the 3.0-litre unit and the sDrive35i with the twinturbo 3.0-litre power option. BMW won't have everything its own way with highly talented rivals competing in the market for premium two-seater convertibles. The hope is that the technological innovations on the latest Z4 wows buyers while the pretty but purposeful styling seals the deal. Whatever the outcome, this is one Z that'll be very hard to catch.
