In brief
Government set to boost car buying MINISTERS are looking at ways to ensure loans are available for people to buy cars as a way of helping Britain’s flagging automobile industry, Gordon Brown has announced. The Prime Minister said it was important the car credit market did not “freeze’’ in the same way that other markets have, as Jaguar Land Rover announced 450 job cuts blaming a “severe reduction’’ in demand for new cars. And he said the Government will do “what we can’’ to help the industry survive the recession. Several companies, including Honda and Nissan, have cut production of new cars as a result of falling demand. When asked what plans he had to help the industry during Prime Minister’s question time, Mr Brown replied: “There are two issues facing the car industry at the moment: one is a shortage of demand for cars, the second is the availability of credit for people buying their cars. We have been talking to the various car companies, we will make announcements in due course. “The car credit problem - that is loans for car purchase - it’s basically a market that is outside the traditional banking industry and we have to look at what we can do so that that market doesn’t freeze in the way that other markets have. “This is a detailed and technical question about how we can get help into the car loan industry but we are looking at that very carefully.’’’
Commuters cuttheircosts
AROUND 60 per cent of those using the car to commute have changed their habits to cut costs, according to a new survey. Some have switched to a smaller car, while others have found a less congested route to work, the poll from Auto Trader magazine and website found. Commuters are also sharing lifts with colleagues while some are even mixing diesel with waste cooking oil to save money. Auto Trader said running costs for motorists have increased over the last 12 months, with depreciation rising nearly three-quarters since 2007 and insurance going up nearly 10 per cent. The company said the average cost of commuting for motorists - based on an average journey of 17.1 miles to and from work - was £35.55 a week. Adding this to the weekly cost of depreciation (£61.21), insurance (£9.21) and road tax (£2.79) gives a weekly overall figure of £108.84.
Showaxeddue tocreditcrunch
A COMMERCIAL vehicle show due to be attended by nearly 300 exhibitors was cancelled this week because of the credit crunch. The CV Show was to have been held from April 28-30 at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre. “This is, of course, disappointing, but given the current economic climate and the uncertainty created, it is the only decision we could make,’’ said Nigel Emms, the CV Show committee chairman. Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Paul Everitt said: “2009 will be an extremely challenging year across the motor industry but this decision, while difficult, creates the opportunity to ensure the 2010 event best reflects the changing needs of the road transport industry.’’
Lots of charisma THERE will always be those who write the Volkswagen Scirocco off as little more than a Golf in a track suit. There’s truth in that but there’s also something wonderfully modern and accessible about VW’s take on the small coupe theme, particularly when the clever 1.4 TSI engine is installed. Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre TSI ‘Twincharger’ engine is a groundbreaking unit that would appear to suit the Scirocco down to a tee. It swaps sheer capacity for forced induction, using both a supercharger and a turbocharger to boost the power output that’s possible from a 1.4-litre petrol engine. The result is 158bhp and torque of 240Nm all the way from 1,500 to 4,500rpm. This broad torque band is more in keeping with what you’d expect from a good diesel engine and it’s achieved by the supercharger and turbocharger working in tandem. The supercharger enhances performance at low revs, filling the void left while the turbo gets into its stride. This virtually eliminates turbo lag and gives the Scirocco a muscular feel throughout the rev range. The 0-60mph sprint is covered in eight seconds dead and there’s a 135mph top
THE SCIROCCO 1.4TSI speed and the engine sounds great with a snarling bark far in excess of its 1.4-litre bite. The handling advances made by the Scirocco centre around its dynamic aids. All models feature advanced Adaptive Chassis Control offering three driver-selected settings - comfort, normal and sport. The system’s influence extends to the steering system: should ‘sport’ be selected, the steering firms up to provide more feel while ‘comfort’ mode makes the steering lighter and easier to operate at low speeds or round town. The 1.4 TSI engine is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual - Volkswagen’s excellent 6speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox with the paddle shifters being off limits, which is a pity for buyers seduced by high technology. The Scirocco is practical for a sports coupe. There’s a reasonably wide boot aperture which opens up 292 litres of luggage space. Fold the split rear seats down and you’ve got 755 litres. The Scirocco features four, indi-
mazda
vidual sculpted seats finished in a choice of either cloth or leather. The sports seats aren’t just restricted to those up front – the contoured rear seats feature integrated headrests to offer plenty of support. Proportions are classically short, low and wide, though the dimensions betray its reliance on Golf mechanicals. It measures 4,256mm long, 1,404mm high and 1,810mm wide. The 1.4-litre TSI engine doesn’t achieve 1.4litre running costs but for a 160bhp petrol engine, it’s highly efficient. The combined cycle economy figure of 42.8mpg and emissions of 154g/km put the Scirocco on a par with a decent 1.6-litre family hatchback but the Volkswagen is a vastly more enticing prospect. Few cars hit the compromise between fun and commonsense as accuratelyI. The styling is spot on, the grip and balance make for infectious handling and the advanced ‘Twincharger’ petrol engine renders the car quick and charismatic enough so you question the need for more power. Four seats and sensible running costs make it a usable daily drive. It is £18,395 on the road.
Good sport that’s also good-looking THIS has been attempted before. Nissan has tried to sell us a powerful, petrol-engined, adventurously-styled lifestyle 4x4 in the shape of the Murano and that’s been a flop. Why should Mazda succeed with the CX-7? Let’s start with the big numbers. Most lifestyle 4x4s front up to the party packing 160bhp or so. Mazda isn’t interested in any of that flyweight nonsense. Yes, a diesel CX-7 will be available but for the time being, you’ll just have to make do with 258bhp of all-wheel-drive power, courtesy of the 2.3-litre turbocharged engine lifted from the stealth bomber Mazda6 MPS. It’ll punt the CX-7 off the line with verve, the sprint to 60mph being notched off in 7.8 seconds, while a top speed of 130mph is a testament to its muscle. The CX-7 will net a few sales
THE CX-7 purely on the basis of the way it looks. Probably the most striking aspect of the car is the steeplyraked windscreen. Most SUVs have a rather bluff frontal aspect but the CX-7 has the sort of screen angle that wouldn’t look out of place on a Lamborghini. The overall effect is to give the Mazda a very sleek, purposeful look and to instantly rid you of any possible notion that the thing can be taken off-road. Which is just as well, as the ground clearance is minimal. You get what you pay for. Want a more characterful engine, sharper handling and a plusher cabin? Then be prepared to fork out the extra cash for a BMW X3 3.0si. If you’re paying less, you’ll need to make compromises and the CX-

THE iQ THE idea of owning a small car has never looked more appealing but the reality remains something that lots of people would rather avoid. Toyota undertook to change all that with a fundamental rethink of the small car concept and the end result is called the iQ. Fuel costs, emissions-based taxation, traffic congestion, parking problems, and environmental concerns ... as the impact of these factors increases smaller cars tend to look more and more attractive. The problem is that many people still see a small car as a compromise in terms of the space available, the sorts of journeys you can undertake, the safety provision and the all-important question of style. The iQ is Toyota’s answer to these issues. It uses a series of design and engineering innovations to deliver on a practical level but also sets out to offer the desirability, personality and attitude that style conscious buyers crave. Just how small is the iQ then? Toyota’s engineers undertook to design a car that was less than three meters in length but that could seat four people. Remarkably, given the dimensions of other four-seater models currently on the market, they managed it. The iQ is 2,985mm from nose to tail, a full 765mm shorter than Toyota’s Yaris supermini but only 30mm lower and 15mm narrower. The iQ also has unique features designed to save space and weight. Among them are the front differential, steering gear and air-conditioning unit. Then there’s the flat fuel tank positioned beneath the floor and the

slim front seats that give extra rear legroom and a unique asymmetrical dashboard. For the driver and front passenger, the iQ never feels like a small car. There’s an excellent amount of space available and the groundbreaking ‘3+1’ layout brings excellent versatility
to the space behind. The seat to the rear of the driver is better suited to small children but when there are only three people on board, its back section can fold down to create useful luggage space. With both rear seats folded, there’s a full 242-litres of capacity in the iQ – more than
enough for the weekly shopping. Toyota’s 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine provides the motive force and its 67bhp is enough to give the iQ a zippy, responsive feel around town. There’s an optional Multidrive automatic gearbox or a slick-shifting fivespeed manual to choose from but in
both cases there’s a 93mph top speed and a 0-60mph time of 14.7s. The suspension is firm and the body roll is almost totally absent, partly thanks to the iQ’s wide stance. Longer trips aren’t a problem with the engine extremely quiet at motorway speeds but it’s in urban areas where the car excels. The turning circle is a minute 3.9m making the iQ easy to park. Fuel economy is nearly 66mpg with the manual gearbox and CO2 emissions of 99g/km will give major tax savings making the iQ a seriously affordable car to run. The iQ may be small but its tough. Toyota has engineered the car to set new standards for small car safety and with a massively rigid body shell. It also features special anti-whiplash headrests and a package of no less than nine airbags. VSC+ stability control is also standard. Of course, none of the iQ’s undoubted qualities would be enough without the illusive desirability factor. With its high window line, the iQ definitely has attitude and its packed with beautiful detailing from the curve of the rear window to the wing mirrors with their integrated indicators. Toyota aimed to build a very special small car and after experiencing the iQ, most will agree that they’ve done it.

GIRL TALK with June Neary

A pretty good job
THE styling of the old Renault Megane was an acquired taste. Hats off to Renault for being so adventurous but the designers really did split public opinion. You never really had to ask because from the garage to the multi-storey car park, even the car deck of a cross channel ferry, the Megane’s bum looked big in everything. Yes, the latest model is more conventional but it’s conventionally pretty – especially in 3-door Coupe form.
RENAULT MEGANE
If that’s not enough, your dealer can tell you about a dCi 160 unit (which you’ll need to order in dCi 150 form if you want automatic transmission). Petrol buyers also get the latest Laguna units, in this case the 1.6 16V 100 and 110bhp powerplants, plus you can talk to your dealer about an all-new turbocharged TCe 130 unit. The flagship engine, the TCe 180, uses similar turbocharged technology.
THE PRACTICALITIES
The boot was surprisingly spacious for a medium-sized family hatchback at 372-litres, although we weren’t overloaded with bags on this occasion. I’m sure that we’d have no gripes about luggage space for our fortnight summer holiday all the same. I thought that Renault’s unparalleled experience in the MPV market shone through with this car, not only in terms of passenger space – which is excellent – but also in the provision of multifarious cubbies, boxes and pockets. The innovative dashboard features an analogue rev-counter alongside a digital speedometer which also incorporates the cruise control/speed limiter display. When this function is activated, the speed selected by the driver is dis-
Both of these engines emit 120g or less of CO2/km, while even the powerful dCi 130 (with pulling power now more readily available earlier in the rev range) manages 135g/km.
VALUE FOR MONEY To begin with, only the five-door hatchback and three-door Coupe bodystyles are on offer but we can soon expect to see the full complement of Megane bodyshapes, including a three-door, an estate, a coupecabriolet and a new version of the Scenic mini-MPV based on this car.
played at the top of the speedometer which is itself ringed by a sequence of lights that take the form of an arc around the central display.
while the selected speed begins to flash if exceeded.
with biofuel-compatible engines also on the agenda.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
In speed limiter mode, the red segment lights up as the speed increases,
The engine line-up is a mixture of familiar carry-overs and new arrivals,
Most important will be the dCi diesels, sales of which will be focused on the dCi 86 and the particulate filter-equipped dCi 106 units.
COULD I LIVE WITH ONE? On the whole, we found little to criticise with the latest Megane – and we learned to love that pretty styling. I think that most buyers will feel the same way.

fiat THE 500byDIESEL BEING cool isn’t easy but it’s increasingly important to car manufacturers trying to sell trendy small cars to young urban buyers. Fiat’s 500 is generally thought of as one of the cooler small cars on the market but in a bid to chill its public profile further, the Italian marque has enlisted the help of Italian fashion brand DIESEL. The result is the 500byDIESEL, a Fiat 500 that’s been on the receiving end of a comprehensive make-over by DIESEL’s designers. You can get a 500byDIESEL that runs on diesel, that would be the 1.3-litre Multijet model, but there are also 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol options with 69 and 100bhp respectively. Five or six speed manual transmissions are offered and the modern 500 has been designed to replicate the original car’s nimble feel and ability to put a smile on its driver’s face. Much of the 500’s underpinnings are based on Fiat Panda running gear - no bad thing as the Panda is a fun steer. Like the Panda, the 500 uses simple MacPherson strut suspension up front and a basic torsion beam at the back. A few centimetres have been added to the width of the car’s track, giving it a foursquare appearance and Fiat claims that body rigidity is around 10 per cent better than the Panda. We’ve established that the 500byDIESEL special edition is all about style and DIESEL’s designers were obviously given a high degree of freedom to put their own flavour onto the car. The car is only available in a rather muted colour pallet of green, brown or black but that’s as far as the understatement goes. The 16inch alloy wheels have the diesel logo on their hubs and there side rubbing strips are picked out in a metallic finish along with the Bpillars and the bumpers. The 1.4-litre 100bhp versions also have yellow brake callipers. Inside, the upholstery is in a special denim fabric and the front seats have a pouch designed to mimic the trademark fifth pocket on DIESEL jeans. The DIESEL logo crops up again on the gear knob and steering wheel.
Cool new image Fiat’s Panda is one of the cheapest cars to own, so the ‘500’ will prove little different. The Multijet diesel version will average over 65mpg, with the 1.2-litre petrol unit not far behind on around 50mpg. Depreciation won’t be anything like at MINI levels but will be much better than you’d expect on a Panda. Which is good news
since insurance costs shouldn’t be much more expensive. There’s a growing emphasis on manufacturers creating a cool image for their small cars in order to appeal to fashion-conscious buyers. Fiat has tried every trick in the book with its 500 and its latest marketing link-up with DIESEL
should only improve the car’s standing further. The styling changes made to the 500byDIESEL are extensive and really contribute to altering the look of the car. Pricing is competitive too and with this special edition available through an innovative online ordering system, the UK allocation is likely to be snapped up fast.

S stands for subtle
SO, to the latest MINI Cooper S. Where the old model used a supercharged 1.6-litre Tritec engine designed by Chrysler and produced in Curitiba, Brazil, the latest S uses the Prince engine developed in conjunction with PSA Peugeot Citroën. The 1.6-litre turbocharged Prince unit has a lot going for it. Anybody who owned one of the old Cooper S models would laugh at its claimed 33.6mpg consumption figure, since driving the vehicle as it begged to be driven would often send average fuel figures dipping below 20mpg. The contemporary turbo engine is a lot easier on the juice, with a combined figure of nearly 41mpg, although this too will dip significantly if you’re getting a bit enthusiastic. The old engine wasn’t a unit that would win any green awards either, churning out 202g/km of carbon dioxide. The turbo engine does far better at 149g/km, putting it on the shortlists of company car buyers who wouldn’t countenance the wallop in the wallet the old car delivered when the taxman came to call. The best bit is that you get more go. Okay, so the power output is up by only five more horsepower which doesn’t mean a whole lot in a vehicle as heavy as the Cooper S but what is key is that torque rises from 162lb/ft to 177lb/ft. On that basis, don’t be too worried that the onpaper figures for the benchmark 0-60 sprint and
www.motorstoday.co.uk

THE COOPER S
top speed only show a minimally incremental improvement, the latest Cooper S shaving 0.3s off the sprint at 7.1s and tacking a couple of miles per hour to the top speed: this car is all in with the needle pointing at 140mph. If that’s not enough, there’s a John Cooper Works (JCW) version of this car with 210bhp. Communicating that this is indeed a very different Cooper S could well be quite the challenge. It takes a keen eye to spot the bodywork differences, despite this car and its progenitor sharing not one piece of sheet metal. The good news for British industry is that the car will continue to be built at what is now known as Plant Oxford (Cowley to old timers), this factory’s output being upped to 240,000 cars per year, more than double what it was when the first MINIs rolled off its lines in 2001. The body panels and sub assemblies hail from Plant Swindon and the BMW-designed engines roll out of the Hams Hall plant in the Midlands. So how can you identify the latest car? Although the stance remains the same, there’s been a loosening of the belt. This Cooper S model, for instance, is 60mm longer. The front grille is tidier and the
indicators are now housed in the headlight pod. The car’s shoulder line is 18mm higher than on the former model, giving the latest version a more hunched, powerful appearance. True enthusiasts will lament the death of the old Cooper S. It was something of a singularity with its he-man steering and engine note that sounded like the four milk floats of the apocalypse. The latest car is a more subtle thing that will be appreciated by more of the people more of the time. Although it may be less of a sports hatch, it’s more of a MINI. Debating the price of progress could keep us here all day.

THE AVEO BY MOST accepted measures, the Chevrolet Aveo is not a remarkable car. It is, however, an important one in opening up new markets for the American giant. Solidly built and attractively styled, it's a decent car, albeit one that inherits a good deal of its engineering from its Kalos predecessor. As makeovers go, the Aveo is one of the cleverest. In profile it doesn't look too much different to the Kalos, the fivedoor car's rather odd drooping swage line being instantly familiar. Move round to the front and the impression is utterly different. The Kalos' rather unhappy-looking face has been replaced with something a whole lot bolder. The upswept headlamps and enormous double grille are punctuated by a serious Chevy cross logo. It's got about twice as much attitude as any other small car you could care to mention. The three-door model is even smarter, with the flanks being sculpted to incorporate pronounced flared rear wheel arches. At the back, there's one of the neatest rear lights clusters around. The interior lacks the self-assurance of the exterior and, inevitably in this corner of the market, feels built down to a price. The same can be said of the Aveo's key rivals, and Chevrolet has specified the interior wisely, giving it a sensible equipment count, fairly decent materials and as much space and versatility as the design constraints allow. It's not the biggest car in its sector, but the compact torsion beam rear suspension means plenty of useable room in the back. With two engines and three and five
A clever makeover door body styles to choose from, Aveo customers also benefit from a decent level of standard kit. "Plenty of car and equipment for a fair price" is part of Chevrolet's philosophy and the entry-level Aveo adheres to that maxim with driver and passenger airbags, an MP3-compatible CD stereo and wipers with intermittent facility. Plusher trim levels add tinted

glass and electric front windows. Options include 15-inch aluminium wheels, leather trim for the steering wheel and gear knob, an onboard computer, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and automatic climate control. The Aveo campaigns on the basis of solid value for money, so it's no great surprise to hear that prices start from around £7,500 and that running costs
are screwed tightly down. It might surprise you that there's no diesel model, given that the GM group has some great diesel engines, but it would be tough to make the additional cost of a diesel version worthwhile to the typically hard-headed Aveo customer. As it stands, the 1.2-litre model will return 51.4mpg which is good and emit 132g/km of carbon dioxide which is
not quite so stellar. The 1.4-litre variant, sups at a rate of 44.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 140g/km. If you're at all style-conscious, there are probably smarter options but not at these prices. As a compromise between budget, ability and badge equity, the Aveo more than makes a case for itself. Moorland Motors price £6,495 for a pre-reg 1.2 LS 3dr.

THE NOTE WHEN it comes to evaluating a car like the Nissan NOTE, it pays to ‘think outside the box’. Nissan has spruced-up its charge and in its latest form, it looks better than ever. Three engine choices are being offered. The two petrol units comprise an 87bhp 1.4-litre as well as a 108bhp 1.6-litre powerplant but the big seller is likely to remain the diesel engine, a 1.5litre dCi common rail unit with 85bhp on tap. As a general rule, drag racing isn’t a particular forte of the supermini-based MPV but if you fancy giving some spotty oik a run for his money away from the lights in your NOTE, the 1.4-litre car will get to 60mph in 13.1s, the diesel is fractionally slower at 13s and the 1.6-litre petrol takes 10.7s. None of the engines are what you would call quick but they’re all more than adequate for everyday driving with even the 1.4 pulling reasonably strongly through the gears. The NOTE always feels highly nimble on the road with body-roll well controlled, a firm ride and steering that’s light but accurate. It’s perfect for nipping through the city streets and it inspires confidence thanks to good all-round visibility and a tight turning circle. If you really value a comfortable ride, one of the NOTE’s rivals may be a better option but if you like your small car with a taught, sporty feel, this could be it. The usual facelift tweaks include a reshaped bumper and bonnet, revised headlights the essential grille tinkering which has seen the adoption of a shinny black finish. At the back, the tail lights are darker and models with parking sensors get them incorporated more neatly into the bumper. It’s nothing too dra-

Established in 1994, JP Car Sales on St Annes Road in Blackpool is well placed to take advantage of the switch to compact vehicles as they specialise in providing small cars that offer low road tax and cheaper insurance premiums. You can find a selection of well-prepared quality used cars that cater for most requirements, from compact city cars and superminis through to familyfriendly hatchbacks, estates, saloons and people carriers. The majority of cars are priced
JP CAR SALES from £2,000 on up towards £10,000 and this dealership can provide low rate finance. The team has all the necessary expertise to produce a range of realistic and affordable options and part exchange deals are also welcome. There are usually around 25 to 30 used vehicles on site at any one time, and all come with a three month, no quibble, parts and labour warranty, plus 12months’ MOT and a service. Every car is also HPI vehicle history checked. Most cars are one owner, low
mileage, with many being sourced through the Motability Programme and therefore guaranteed to have a low mileage and service history, while other vehicles are supplied via trusted industry contacts. Cars can also be sourced to order. All the vehicle preparation including safety checks, services and valets are carried out on site. Why not call into JP Car Sales and take a look at the great selection they have to offer? You can find them at the rear of 18 St Annes Road, Blackpool, Lancashire (FY4 2AN) or, call (01253) 408030 to arrange a test drive. You can also visit their website at www.jpcarsales.com.

used cars The Gazette
Your essential Friday guide to buying second-hand vehicles
you’ve had a look at what you can get for your money with a new 4x4 and just need more metalwork. Objectively there’s very little wrong with the Disco 3 but if the styling or the image don’t agree with you, the Toyota Land Cruiser makes a very capable Plan B. Even more reliable and with a better diesel engine than early Discovery 3s, the Land Cruiser will go on forever. Late shape Nissan Patrols are worth looking for if you need something very rugged and Kia’s Sorento is also well worth a look if you’re planning on buying something nearly new but don’t want to break the bank. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has fallen off the bottom of the luxury 4x4 market to a certain extent and 3.0-litre CRD models, especially in Predator trim, make fantastic used purchases.
FAMILY 4X4 CHEAP & CHEERFUL OPTIONS
If funds are limited, then there are plenty of ways to go, with older examples of models which have been around in this sector of the market for some time. The better-built later Land Rover Discovery models are well worth a look as is the relatively rare Ford Explorer. The Mitsubishi Shogun Sport offers an interesting alternative. Otherwise you could always opt for the evergreen Isuzu Trooper or higher mileage Shogun models. If you’re not bothered about the lifestyle implications and simply want something large that’s going to be reasonably reliable, then this is where to shop. Be honest with what you need the car for. There’s little benefit in buying a tank-like leviathan that can scale a mountain face if all you want is a 4x4 that looks smart and can occasionally tow a trailer.
AFFORDABLE MID-RANGERS
Now we’re talking about some capable contenders. If you’ve got upwards of £5,000 to spend, the default choice for many will still be the Land Rover Discovery, this time in Series II guise.
Family favourites For those who appreciate something a little different, the newer shape Jeep Cherokee is well worth a look, especially in CRD diesel form and the later Mitsubishi Shogun Sport is an undervalued car. Toyota’s Land Cruiser Colorado is built to last the course as is
the late shape Nissan Patrol, one of the biggest 4x4s you could hope to find. If you need something more sophisticated, you could even dip into the bottom end of the luxury 4x4 market in the shape of a Lexus RX300, now more affordable than you might think.
