Sassy success SOMETIMES we all have to bite the bullet. Renault realised that if it was to compete as a global player, it needed to invest in new factories, new cars and new staff. One of the first fruits of this huge spending spree was the Clio III. Put baldly, Renault just could not afford for this car to fall flat on its face but looking at the vehicle, there was never much danger of that. This latest, facelifted Clio is comfortably bigger than the old Clio II. Renault have now been able to take a leaf out of General Motors' book and allow the utility models (like the Modus) to concentrate on family duties, freeing the Clio up – as Vauxhall has done with its Astra – to be a bit sassier than before. Therefore, the lines are sharper and sleeker than the rather bulbous previous two generations and there's greater production emphasis on the sportier three-door model, a car which is expected to account for over 75 per cent of UK sales. That's not to say that the Clio II is dead and buried. Budget-priced 'Campus' models are
CLIO III RANGE still offered for sale as entry-level Clio versions. Renault dealers will either have to work very hard with the pricing on these variants or segregate their showrooms because once buyers clap eyes on the Clio III, the old car tends to look very old indeed. At 3.99m long, the Clio III is a full 174mm longer than its predecessor and despite those elegant lines, 45mm of extra height has been slyly grafted in. The result is a car that's a far more spacious proposition without appearing frumpy or gawky. Peugeot tried this and failed with the 307 and SEAT only just managed it with the Leon but Renault have worked the compromise between space and styling better than both. The Clio III is offered with a wide array of petrol and Euro IV compliant common-rail diesel engines. The petrol engine range comprises a 75bhp 1.2-litre, a 100bhp tur-
bocharged 1.2-litre TCE unit, a punchy 138bhp 2.0-litre unit and a knockout 2.0litre 197bhp offering, while the 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine comes in a choice of three power outputs: 68bhp, 86bhp and 106bhp. The list of available transmission options for Clio III is the same as for Modus and includes a six speed manual on the most powerful dCi 106. For the first time, a robotised "quick-shift" gearbox commanded by paddles located behind the steering wheel is also available. Prices start at under £10,000 and the trim level range is split between the sporty 3-door and the practical 5-door cars although buyers can also get a Sport Tourer estate. The 3-door line-up runs from Extreme to Rip Curl, Dynamique and Dynamique S while the 5-door model is offered in Expression, Rip Curl, Dynamique, Dynamique S or Initiale form. All models get power steering, a trip computer, body-coloured bumpers and side mouldings, remote central locking and a height adjustable steering wheel.

Prestige speedster with a green hue CONTINENTAL SUPERSPORTS THERE are some thunderously fast cars in the current Bentley line-up but all of them retain at least a little of the brand's trademark reserve. Even the Continental GT coupe with its supercar performance plays things in a more understated fashion than the alternatives in its pace and price brackets. That's how it used to be anyway, before the Continental Supersports arrived on the scene. The twin-turbo W12 engine that powers the Continental GT develops 552bhp and in the Continental GT Speed, it has 600bhp but in the Continental Supersports it has been further tweaked to achieve 621bhp. The raw figures give some insight into the sheer pace of the Continental Supersports. The car can get from a standing
start to 60mph in 3.7 seconds and will be bursting through the 100mph barrier in 8.9s. If you put the hammer down at 50mph, that monstrous torque and the four-wheel-drive transmission system will have you at 70mph in 2.1s. The top speed is 204mph. The power of the Supersports is
reflected in its styling but the modifications are not purely for cosmetic reasons: they work to ensure the car can make the most of its performance. The huge frontal intakes supply the extra air that the turbochargers need to function properly while twin bonnet vents allow hot
air to flow away from the engine. The self-levelling air suspension system is lower than on the standard models and features stiffer bushes while the rear track is extended, necessitating the Supersports' wider rear wheelarches. Even cars built for the express purpose of going indecently quickly need to keep half an eye on their environmental impact these days or at least be seen to be doing so. With this in mind, the Supersports model has been designed to run on any mix of petrol and E85 Bioethanol. Because it's produced from plants which take CO2 out of the atmosphere while growing, bioethanol is carbon neutral and owners using the fuel will take the edge off the Supersports' hefty combination of 388g/km CO2 emissions and 17.3mpg economy. Price on the road is £150,000.

A superb supermini TOYOTA’S second generation Yaris supermini has an inherent rightness about it, writes Jonathan Crouch. At first glance, this isn’t a car you’d put at the top of your supermini shopping lists. After all, there are other cars that are more stylish, faster, cheaper or better equipped. Yet everything about it just does the job so effectively. After a few months, you often get rattly pieces of trim and odd things that stop working as they should. There’s been nothing like that with this little Yaris on a long-term test Here’s a car that still looks and feels as fresh as it did when it first rolled out of the showroom nearly a year ago. I chose the diesel, 1.4 D4-D TR modelm not only because it has so much more pulling power through the gears than its equivalent petrol stablemates but also because I wanted to see if the up-front premium the D4-D demands could be reclaimed over the course of the year in lower running costs. So far, I’m

YARIS getting pretty close to Toyota’s claimed urban fuel consumption figure of 55mpg but in terms of making back my money, it’s going to be rather touch and go. Still, I can console myself that this car is significantly better to drive than the comparable 1.33-litre petrol model. The 89bhp engine is a useful step forward from the 74bhp diesel that powered the previous generation Yaris, with the sprint from 0 to 62mph achieved in 10.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 109mph. The main thing is plenty of lowend pulling power to make town driving a breeze and the steering is light and responsive. Visibility is good all round, except for the large ‘A’ pillars which you have to peer around on tight bends. The Yaris manages the normal aspects of a supermini’s existence
just as effectively as it does the abnormal ones. Iit’s actually very difficult to think of a single aspect of the car to criticise. Plus, it also feels very well built. The double-sealed doors have been designed specifically to feel thicker and weightier and shut with a thunk rather than a clang. The unconventional fascia looks far removed from the supermini norm, with a 3D effect on the main
display. More conservative buyers may find it a bit unusual but it’s certainly distinctive. Negatives? Well, there’s only so much money that can be thrown at a car where margins are this tight and there are plenty of unlined cubbies and hard plastics on display. This is somewhat disappointing for something otherwise so well built. Still, the flip side of this is that the interior is hard-wearing and the

combined attentions of my three girls (Caris, age 10, Ellie, aged 7 and Amy, aged 2) have failed to corrupt it. Overall, were I a rival manufacturer to Toyota seeking to design a classleading supermini, I’d buy a Yaris and take it apart piece by piece to find out just how thorough a job I needed to do. And having done so, I’d probably give up and go and build something a bit easier. Enough said. Prices for the 1.4-litre D-4D range from £11,125 to £12,855 on the road, with insurance group 4E.

Spacious funster IF THE Clubman is the MINI in its most utilitarian form, it should make even more sense with the MINI's most utilitarian engine. It all bodes well for the MINI One Clubman. Say what you like about the MINI's iconic design, zesty driving experience and exemplary economy, it's not the most practical destination for around £12,000 of your hard earned cash. Those stingy rear seats and the less than captious boot on the hatchback model mean that family journeys can be a bit of a squeeze. The Clubman was created to address this point and did a decent job without setting the world alight. More affordably priced in One form, the Clubman could be at its most appealing. The MINI One Clubman has a 1.4litre petrol engine and with 95bhp, it isn't the most vigorous performer.

bmw
MINI ONE CLUBMAN Give the accelerator pedal a sound stomping and, if you're slick enough with the gearbox, 60mph can be reached in 11.6s. That and the 114mph top speed makes this the slowest MINI Clubman but neither the Cooper's 9.8s nor the Cooper D's 10.4s are particularly rapid and yet those cars are more than capable of getting their drivers grinning. Like all MINI products, the Clubman's fun factor comes from its responsive steering, firm suspension and tight body control, the One Clubman should be no different, particularly as it shares the Cooper's sporty suspension set-up. With a longer wheelbase and around 2cm of extra roof height plus
identical components as far back as the B-pillars, there doesn't seem to be much scope for the Clubman to dramatically exceed the interior space of the MINI. Crucially though, it's 24cm longer overall thanks to the extended rear overhang and that has helped BMW squeeze in 8cm of extra rear legroom while upping the boot capacity from a paltry 160 litres to a respectable 260. The rear seats take the form of a three-seater bench in the standard car
BUY LOCAL Derek Woodman BMW Whitehills Business Park, Lytham St Annes Way, Blackpool Tel 01253 697101
but the standard MINI's two-person pods can be reinstated as a no cost option if you don't need the middle berth. The Clubman is a five-door car but the doors aren't exactly where you'd expect them to be. It's business as usual at the front but access to the rear seating is through a single 'suicide' door on the right-hand side. Hinged on its rearmost edge so that it opens in the opposite direction to the front doors, it's positioned on the right-hand side of the Clubman and there's no equivalent on the left. It means that rear seat passengers in right-hand drive markets like the UK are forced to exit into the road. The One Clubman comes in at around
£1,200 less than the Cooper Clubman, a decent saving that will bring this more practical MINI into range for a wider group of buyers. BMW may charge customers a premium for buying into its carefully nurtured MINI brand but it has also engineered the cars to be highly fuel efficient with buoyant residual values meaning that overall running costs are very reasonable. The MINI One Clubman can return 52.3mpg on the combined cycle which is very good for a petrol model and its emissions are a similarly strong 130g/km. Anyone looking for a small car with loads of space and practicality built in might not appreciate the MINI Clubman. There are far better ways of accommodating the family comfortably for this kind of money. As a MINI with a bit more space, however, it's a fine product and that holds true regardless of which engine is installed. The price is £13,290 on the road.

STAFF at Derek Woodman entered into the spirit of 'Do Something Funny for Money' for Comic Relief 2009 as they dressed up last Friday to raise money for the charity. Staff at the BMW & MINI dealership were invited to dress down and make a donation to Comic Relief – but a brave few decided to dress up in keeping with this years theme! Customer relationship manager, Michelle Walker said, "The team made a brilliant effort for Red Nose day and
there were some fantastic outfits. We had Scooby Doo, a couple of hippies, Jack Sparrow and cowboy complete with inflatable horse! However the star of the show was used car sales executive David Langan who dressed as a woman all day, a convincing one at that! He also collected all the money from staff and customers." The dealership raised £250 for the Comic Relief charity, which raised over £59 million on the night.

Enter the new hybrid BLACKPOOL Honda will be holding a Breakfast Morning event on Saturday, March 21, to launch the new Honda Insight hybrid car - one of the most exciting models the dealership has had to launch in its long association with the Honda Brand. This will be a fantastic opportunity for customers to be the first to see the Insight and experience its remarkable characteristics over tea, coffee and pastries. The new Insight is a stylish and practical family hatchback offering both the private and business users significant savings on their annual motoring costs and all at the price of a conventional family hatchback. The Honda Insight also significantly under cuts the Toyota Prius, both on initial price and running cost over three years. As a fleet dealership, Blackpool Honda with the new Insight, can offer the business user significant savings in income tax, fuel, road tax and residual values compared with similar conventionally powered vehicles as well as Toyota's Prius. It also does its bit for the environment with low emissions and excellent fuel economy. So how does the Insight achieve all this?
THE INSIGHT As well as Honda's technically advanced IMA petrol/electric drive-train, the new Insight displays information to promote more efficient and economical driving. The central instrument readout is the key to all this. Drive in a relaxed smooth manner and the dash glows in a calming green light. Get a bit over enthusiastic and the green hue fades, eventually turning blue if driven really hard. By maintaining a green approach a little plant symbol illuminates on the Insight's display as a reward and it's possible to get up to
five of these symbols lit if the car is driven carefully. At the end of your journey the car will give you an average rating to show how efficiently you have driven during your journey. For all those who attend, Blackpool Honda will offer a complimentary spring check on their car (worth ÂŁ15)* and includes: Check the heater and air conditioning, check washers and wipers, check lights and
horn, fluid levels, add screen wash, check all the drive belts (excluding cam belt and balancer belt), check the battery, check exhaust system, check brake pipes and hoses, check suspension plus a tyre inspection. So why not find out more at the Blackpool Honda Breakfast Morning Event? You can find them at Lytham St Anne's Way, Blackpool FY4 5PQ or telephone them on (08448) 441485 for further information. You can also visit their group's website at www.coxmotorgroup.com *Please book by calling (08448) 441485. Limited spaces available.

Hey, good looking IN THE film 'March of the Penguins' there's a scene where a whole bunch of penguins stand on the edge of the pack ice waiting for the first one to jump in. There could be leopard seals or killer whales in there but it's inevitable that one of the penguins has to be the first to go. Once one plops in, the rest surge in behind. Vauxhall weren't amongst the first penguins to dive into the 'coupe convertible' with their Astra TwinTop, but then, maybe that's a good thing. This car moves the game on by offering a folding roof that's composed of three main sections instead of the usual two piece affair. All of which means that you don't need to fold two huge pieces of metal into the car's rear end, avoiding the strangely mis-shapen looks of some coupe-cabriolets. At the press of a dash-mounted button, the two overhead sections of the roof stack on top of the glass rear
ASTRA TWINTOP window and hinge backwards into the boot, offering the usual benefits of added security and safety of a hard topped car with the wind in the hair feel of a convertible. What's more, the Astra TwinTop isn't merely an Astra hatch that's had an angle grinder taken to it. The body was designed from the ground up as a convertible and Vauxhall reckon the two cars share at most 30 per cent of body parts. With excellent chassis rigidity when the roof is in place, driving dynamics should approach those of the lauded Astra hatch. Designed at GM Design Europe in Germany, the Astra TwinTop goes into battle against the likes of the Volkswagen Eos and Renault Megane CC although at almost 4500mm in length, it's usefully bigger than both
of these rivals. The styling is also better resolved thanks in no small part to that clever folding roof arrangement. The rear end carries over the petal-shaped lights of the Tigra and luggage space is better than you might expect, even with the roof stowed. Utility is enhanced by 'Easy Load', a feature raising the horizontally stacked parts of a folded roof at the push of a button, making cargo easily accessible. Great when you've got an armful of shopping in other words.
Three petrol engines are available at prices starting from £19,000. Entry level customers will get the 105bhp 1.6-litre Twinport unit but it may well be worth saving a little harder for the usefully quicker 140bhp 1.8-litre model - the only engine that's available with an automatic gearbox. Those who really want to feel a hurricane in their hair should plump for the 197bhp 2.0-litre Turbo model which uses the same engine as the popular Astra 2.0T SRi. There's also a 150bhp 1.9-litre diesel variant. Vauxhall may stand charged with a
marked lack of originality when it comes to the Astra TwinTop but if you're going to be a follower, at least be a good one. That's where the Astra looks set to score. It's good looking, offers a name that UK buyers trust and comes with a range of decent engines. Overall then. the omens look very good indeed. After all, evolution has shown there to be certain benefits in waiting until the coast is clear. Moorland Motors have just one Astra 1.9 CDTi Air 150PS at £16,744, saving £4,956 on the recommended price.

Low cost green car WILL IT SUIT ME?
Small cars are very much in vogue at the moment. They're the simplest, most effective way to achieve the dual goals of minimising motoring costs and cutting vehicle emissions, so both manufacturers and consumers are paying them more attention than at any time in the past. It's into this state of affairs that Suzuki has pitched its latest Alto, a compact city car with the tough task of vying for attention against some very high profile rivals.
THE PRACTICALITIES
We're told that the space for front seat occupants is 'prioritised' in the cabin and so it should be but that doesn't bode well for those in the back. The fact is that most citycars are used to carry more than two people rarely, if ever, and so long as the rear seats can cope with a few shopping bags and a tattered road atlas, they'll do the job. The Alto's C-Pillars are extremely thick and this may result in visibility issues when parking but the interior itself looks to have the requisite youthful feel with the curvy lines of the dash and the door inserts. There's also a healthy amount of storage capacity.

SUZUKI ALTO
GIRL TALK with June Neary
Suzuki products rarely leave too much to the imagination in terms of equipment and the Alto doesn't break with that tradition. The car is also well-appointed from a safety perspective with Suzuki incorporating a full complement of crumple zones and impact-absorbing structures to keep occupants safe in the event of a collision. Front side and curtain airbags are available, as is ESP stability control.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
The Alto's 1.0-litre petrol engine looks ideal for a compact urban vehicle. The 3-cylinder unit musters 67bhp and 90Nm maximum torque at 4,800rpm. That doesn't sound thrilling but in a car that tips the scales at 855kg, it's enough to cover the 0-60mph sprint in 14 seconds.
Stick at it and a top speed of 96mph is also attainable. The Alto is 3500mm long with a 2,360mm wheelbase and that helps it achieve a super-tight turning radius of 4.5m that should be ideal for manoeuvring into tight parking spaces or executing the odd cheeky U-turn.
VALUE FOR MONEY
The 1.0-litre petrol engine can
return an impressive 64.2mpg on the combined cycle along with 103g/km emissions. It's greener than Robin Hood on a rollercoaster but if you specify the four-speed automatic gearbox, environmental performance will tail off. The auto model gets 53mpg and 122g/km emissions.
COULD I LIVE WITH ONE?
The choice now at the disposal of UK city car buyers is quite something and the Suzuki Alto looks like being another useful addition to the field. Operating at the value for money end of the segment, its low costs and competitive pricing will be crucial to its success.

The Motability Scheme has helped thousands of disabled people get mobile. We look at the latest developments and answer some of the most frequently asked questions
motability
www.motorstoday.co.uk
CLAIMING a benefit due to you isn’ t always as easy as it seems. Means tests, endless form filling and jumping through countless bureaucratic loops sees millions of pounds of benefits go unclaimed each year. The Motability scheme likes to do things differently and has widened its choice of cars available to disabled drivers yet further for this year. Vehicles like the MINI are now available and Motability are even offering a referral scheme. When you tell a friend, or relative, about the motability car scheme and they decide to join, they’ll send you £25 to say thank you. And, they’ll also send your friend £25 as a welcome gift too. Full details are available at the Motability website (www.motability.co.uk), which also has a link to the “BrowseAloud” function for those with visual impairment. The Motability Scheme is open to anyone who receives either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, and has at least 12 months’ award length remaining when they apply. No waiting lists, credit checks or medical assessments are required. Joining the Scheme is pretty straightforward – you simply need to make your choice of car and order it at your local dealership but do visit a number of dealers to look at different makes and models, and have a thorough test drive. No extra assessments or credit checks are needed. Insurance is also taken care of when acquiring a car through the Contract HELPING HAND: Motability can put you on the road to freedom Hire Scheme. It includes breakdown cover, servicing, maintenance, car tax and more but it's surprising how many people are still unaware that all these things are included in the worry-free package. Changing to a new car when the time comes is also made as easy as possible with a seamless transfer. You simply keep your old car until the new one is ready. If you have medium-to-heavy adaptations for your disability, you may be able to keep your car for longer by extending the lease, or arrange to transfer the adaptations to your new vehicle. There's no reason why any Motability customers should be left car-less between leases – unless, that is, you are on holiday and would prefer that arrangement. You don’t need tractor driving skills for a 4x4 now LUXURY 4X4
DESIRABLE BUT POTENTIALLY PRICEY
IF there's one corner of the market that has changed more than any other it's possibly the luxury 4x4 sector. Run the clock back a few years and a luxury 4x4 was either a Range Rover or something big, Japanese and agricultural. We've progressed a long way since then and much of the credit for the revolution goes to the BMW X5, a car which showed that you didn't need tractor driving skills to own a luxury 4x4. Of course, the big manufacturers had to play catch up and as a result there is now a wider selection than ever of talented luxury 4x4s to choose from but if you want something a little older you will notice a drop off in terms of sophistication.
If you want the best of the best, most will still plump for a Range Rover, in this instance the post 2002 series III model. Upper range BMW X5 and Mercedes M-class model will fall into this compass and if you've really got bags of cash, the more modern crop of contenders including the Volvo XC90, the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne are all up for grabs.
WHAT TO PAY
CHEAP & CHEERFUL OPTIONS
Mk II model Range Rovers are always a solid bet but if you need something with a little more attitude then the Jeep Grand Cherokee makes a decent option. Although some of the earliest cars are now looking a little dog-eared, there are still a number
of facelifted cars that represent great value for money. Just don’t expect a huge cabin. The other notable contender in this class is the car that was effectively left high and dry by the BMW X5. Lexus’ RX300 is probably one of the better bets if you don’t
plan to go near any mud.
AFFORDABLE MID-RANGERS
The Toyota Landcruiser Amazon makes a great choice if you genuinely need acres of space, but most buyers
in this sector prefer something a little more urbane and this tends to boil down to either a BMW X5 or a Mercedes M Class. Don’t discount the Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CDR or its seven-seat Commander sibling.

Committed to customers WHEN you are looking to replace your car or buy a new one, there is no substitute for an established car dealership that is well known in the trade and respected by all its customers. Such a dealership is Evans Halshaw in Blackpool which has a new dealer principal, Will Bradshaw. Will and his long serving team are dedicated to providing the very best in customer care. Evans Halshaw holds the Ford franchise which is an extremely attractive franchise with an exciting and very popular model range. This selection of awardwinning models offers unrivalled variety and fantastic value for money. March 1 saw the introduction of the new ‘09’ plate making owning a new Ford even more desirable. Some previous owners would doubtless have preferred it if this model, like its predecessor, had been more of its own car and less like the Fiesta. Yet, for many others, a smaller, more affordable Fiesta with a dash of extra flair inside is
EVANS HALSHAW exactly what they’re looking for. The new Ka starts from just £7,995 on the road. The new Fiesta (above) may not be the largest car in the supermini sector but on just about every other main criteria, it’s either up there or class-leading, which shows just how far this car has come over the years through its many iterations. It at last has cutting edge looks and a superb cabin, plus the ECOnetic version shows other makers how green a compact yet practical runabout like this can be. Overall, a pragmatic mix between tried and tested elements that are cost effective and shiny new details that gel extremely well. Small car buyers simply can’t ignore this car. The new Fiesta Style starts at just £8,495 on the road. The dealership also has some excellent offers available on both new and used vehicles including Cashback deals.
