Black magic

BLACK, it’s often said, never goes out of fashion and Audi is hoping to tap in to its unwavering popularity with special Black Edition versions of its A3. Black Edition customers are presented with a choice of four engine options. Petrol buyers can select from a pair of turbocharged fourcylinder units, the 158bhp 1.8 TFSI and the 2.0-litre TFSI with its 198bhp output. Both make the A3 a properly quick car with an 8s 0-60mph performance time for the 1.8 and 7s attainable in the 2.0-litre. Both units may use turbos but the power delivery is smooth and progressive with fast throttle response throughout the rev range. The diesels are Audi’s latest 2.0-litre common-rail injection units with 138bhp or 168bhp power outputs. Performance is less concussive but refinement is very impressive by diesel standards and again, the power is fed on in a pleasantly smooth fashion. The 138bhp 2.0litre TDI has a 9.5s 0-60mph time and the 168bhp option betters that by 0.7s. The A3 Black Edition is based on the sporty S-Line model but comes with a generous haul

of extra equipment. The premium customers are asked to pay for this is just over £900 on the three-door and five-door Sportback bodystyles. For that, they get the de-chromed front grille, special dark Titanium finish alloy wheels, privacy glass and Piano Black interior inlays but also a high quality BOSE stereo system, rear parking sensors and a special flat-bottomed steering wheel. An A3 Cabriolet Black Edition model is also available. Predictably, the Black Edition A3 comes in black as standard but other colour options are available for the exterior paint work. You might think that this defeats the object of the Black Edition line but with Ibis White available at no extra cost and Phantom Black, Misano Red and Monza Silver metallic colours as cost options, Audi is making certain that there’s a Black Edition for everyone - even those who can’t abide black cars. So you can save money on the purchase of an A3 Black Edition but what good is that if you’ve then got to hand it all back in running costs?

jaguar

Fortunately, Audi has taken a number of steps with its latest A3 to improve its economy and emissions so despite its fierce performance, the Black Edition is no cash eating monster. All of the latest A3 models feature aerodynamic modifications and other tweaks to help the cars achieve better environmental performance and these help the 138bhp TDI model return 55mpg with 134g/km emissions. The petrol options do less well, peppering the 40mpg mark with their combined economy and emitting around 160g/km of CO2. Audi has fashioned the Black Edition versions of its A3 to tempt those who are looking at models from the higher end of the premium hatchback market. Fitting the A3’s best engines and supplementing the sporty S Line trim level with some desirable extras, the manufacturer has come up with a package that shows the car in a very favourable light. The A3 remains a highly desirable proposition with a wide range of talents and the Black Edition can only raise its profile. Prices start at £22,215.

Serious challenge to German rivals IT WAS starting to look as though rival manufacturers were more likely to fire their chief executives to the moon from a giant catapult than break the German stranglehold on the executive car market but then Jaguar launched the XF. With Jag’s foreign ownership selectively glossed over, here was evidence that the British marque could design and build a big executive car to match and even beat the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes at their own game. All Jaguar needed to do was hammer home its advantage and the latest 3.0-litre diesel engine could be a mighty blow in the right direction. The figures make interesting reading. In Diesel S form the XF’s 3.0-litre engine produces 271bhp and also churns out a whopping 600Nm of torque. That’s major league muscle, enough to challenge BMW’s mighty 3.0-litre diesels from an equal footing and the XF’s lightweight design means a 0-60mph sprint of under six seconds is also achievable. This Jaguar has the pace to leave the competition in its wake. If all that sounds like overkill, a more prosaic option is also available in the form of a 236bhp version of the same engine.

THE XF 3.0 DIESEL

Here 0-60mph can still be covered in 6.7s and the 50mph70mph increment, a good indicator of mid-range pull, is only 0.5s slower at 3.7s. Executive car buyers choose diesel engines because of their muscular yet languid performance but the crucial factor is cost. A petrol engine with equivalent performance can leave your bank account looking like it’s suffered a meteorite strike where the diesel’s economy, emissions and residual values mean your finances should take far less of a hit. The key benefits of the superefficient combustion achieved by

the XF 3.0-litre diesels are 42mpg combined economy and 179g/km CO2 emissions. These figures are the same for both the engine’s power outputs and make the Diesel S look more competitive still against the likes of BMW’s 535d. Perhaps the Germans have had it their own way for too long. There’s no doubt that the XF represented a massive opportunity for Jaguar to break into the executive car big league and with the latest 3.0-litre diesel engines, the marque is giving the car every chance of realising that potential.

Competent contender Toyota is usually content to manufacture a well-built, reliable product and let the market make of it what it will. Toyota haven’t risen to become the world’s largest car manufacturer in waiting by accident and an exemplary trouble-free reliability record has done more than anything else to propel them to greatness. All the elaborate styling, entertaining handling and advanced technology in the world is useless if the car won’t start or is plagued by niggling electrical faults. The Auris, thus far, has a pristine copybook for reliability. So we’ve established, as far as a couple of thousand miles in a brand new car can, that the Auris is a dependable vehicle. It’s the other areas that go to constitute a top end family hatchback which we’re more interested in. Drop inside the car and it’s the dramatic waterfall-effect dash instantly grabs the attention. All the major controls are mounted on the raised centre section which cascades down between the seats and also plays host to the handbrake and the gear lever. There’s nothing but fresh air and a

THE AURIS storage bin underneath this bridge and it effectively divides the front part of the cabin in two, negating the possibility of a quick shuffle across to exit by the passenger door when you’ve parked too close to a pillar in the multi-storey. The cabin is typically Toyota which means tough materials, sturdy-feeling controls and little trace of individuality. The build quality is out of the top draw but with higher class materials and extra design flare applied to areas other than the dashboard centre section, it could easily be raised a notch. At the wheel, the seating is pleasantly firm and a comfortable driving position is easily achieved. The angled centre console leaves the handbrake jutting up at an unusual angle but the gearlever and other controls are within easy reach of the driver. T he Auris lacks the firm suspension found on sportier feeling family hatches but for many drivers most of the time, this will be preferable. The controls are light and the springs soak up bumps with little drama but the

chassis is still taut enough to brake and corner without too much pitch and roll. The Auris is pleasantly at home in the town, country or the motorway. The six-speed manual transmission features some closely-stacked ratios that you’ll need to keep on top of to maintain decent torque which, with the D-4D 130 engine fitted to our model, is found in a narrowish seam between 2,000 and 2,800rpm. Fortunately, the ‘box is a joy to use. The engine isn’t the smoothest of diesel units but the punchy performance at low revs and the strong economy figure are much more satisfying. We’ve been averaging around 45mpg on out test, which has taken in a lot of fuel-sapping urban driving. In creating the Auris, Toyota’s engineers started with the passengers and then worked outwards, maximising

occupant space with elements such as a flat passenger floor and high window surfaces. The all-new platform has an overall length of 4,220mm incorporating a 2,600mm wheelbase. This means the wheelbase represents 61.6 per cent of the car’s total length. The higher the percentage, the more space is afforded to people rather than oily bits. By contrast, the current Ford Focus, has a 58.5 per cent wheelbase to length and the latest SEAT Leon manages a mere 59.7 per cent figure. With an overall height of 1,515 and a width of 1,760mm, the Auris is one of the biggest family hatches around, although the shape does much to disguise this bulk. Perhaps the kindest way of describing the Auris’ exterior shape is ‘evolutionary.’

Cheeky chap such fun

Small, affordable and still a citycar favourite FIAT PANDA A WOMAN’S VIEW - WILL IT SUIT ME?

Fiat’s current generation Panda has proved to be an enduring favourite amongst citycar buyers. The shape is cheeky without lapsing into cutesy pastiche and the equipment levels are far beyond the citycar norm, especially since the recent revisions made the range even more competitive. It’s a car that’s virtually impossible to dislike.

THE PRACTICALITIES.

The term ‘citycar’ usually denotes a vehicle that’s cramped, insubstantial and rather uncomfortable to drive. The Panda is a long way from this stereotype. Despite measuring only 3540mm from bumper to bumper, the Panda offers a decent amount of interior space, helped by a generous height of 1530mm and that wheel at each corner design. Room up front is fine for two big adults, but rear legroom will naturally be a little pinched if four burly blokes squeeze in. Still, for two adults and two children it works very well. Luggage space is adequate, access to the hatch being helped by a very low loading sill. A split folding rear bench helps when transporting long or bulky items.

BEHIND THE WHEEL

Four engines are offered, opening with the entry-level 1.1-litre for those on a tight budget. Few will regret shelling out a few hundred pounds extra for the more powerful 60bhp 1.2-litre 8v unit which looks set to be the most popular engine option. The final petrol choice is a 1.4-litre and its 100bhp output is enough to give the

GIRL TALK with June Neary

Panda a decent turn of pace by citycar standards. Fitted to the appropriately titled 100HP model, it can reach 115mph and get from 0 to 60mph in 9.5s. Also bound to be much in demand is a 70bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine that returns quite astonishing fuel figures and there’s a 4x4 version for the more adventurous of spirit.

VALUE FOR MONEY A tweaked exterior colour pallet and revised interior trims are about the extent of the visual changes on the latest Panda and that means the pricing is as affordable as ever. Prices start at around £7,000. Measured in terms of trim for trim, a similarly specified Citroen C2 will work out a good deal more expensive. The added cachet of the 2004 European Car of The Year award has helped to guarantee healthy residual values. Running costs are minimal, with a range of economical engines offered and minuscule insurance ratings.

COULD I LIVE WITH ONE? Despite a flurry of new arrivals in the citycar sector, there’s still nothing to match the Panda in terms of value for money. Considering the affordable pricing, Fiat have specified the car very well and crucially, it’s fun to drive. Few cars are as instantly likeable.

on vehicle insurance are to be tightened in a bid to reduce the six per cent ❖Laws of motorists who drive without cover, it has been announced. In future, it will be an offence not only to drive without insurance, but also to keep an uninsured car. The new offence will attract a penalty of up to £1,000, with the possibility of court action to seize the vehicle.

nissan

www.motorstoday.co.uk

Alternative to the hatchback THE latest Nissan X-TRAIL compact 4x4 is an impressive car – but it also comes at an impressive price now that Nissan no longer offers a two-wheel drive variant. All versions bar the entry-level 2.0-litre petrol model we’re looking at here retail at well over £20,000. Only this 2.0-litre remains to offer a viably priced alternative to an up-market family hatchback. Whilst the 2.0dCi diesel version of the X-TRAIL is probably the better bet if you do intend to take your shiny Nissan mud-plugging, you’ll probably struggle to make back the diesel version’s £1,600 price premium in improved fuel economy if you cover the sort of relatively low annual mileage common to this type of car. The 140bhp engine isn’t too punishing on fuel, returning a presentable 32.5mpg on the combined cycle,

X-TRAIL 2.0 PETROL the payback being its ability to hit 60mph in 11.1 seconds en route to a fairly academic 114mph. The peak torque of 196Nm is respectable but don’t think that makes this car an accomplished offroader. The front and rear departure angles aren’t the greatest, the exhaust tip catching when cresting sharp edges, but otherwise the X-TRAIL acquits itself well. If you decide to go for the 2.0-litre 16v engine in your X-TRAIL, you’ll have to choose TREK trim. It features Bluetooth phone integration, 16” alloy wheels, full body coloured bumpers, climate controlled air conditioning, a full suite of airbags – driver, passenger, side and curtain, plus a CD/radio with 4 speakers.

FACTS CAR: Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCI 2WD PRICES: £18,595£20,553 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 10 CO2 EMISSIONS: 159g/km PERFORMANCE: Max Speed 113mph / 060mph 10.6s FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 36.7mpg / (extra urban) 55.4mpg / (combined) 46.3mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: twin front and side airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD

KUGA 2.0 TDCI 2WD ISN’T a 4x4 without four-wheel-drive something of a pointless exercise? On the contrary, if we’re talking about modern compact 4x4s and taking the ways in which most owners use them into account, a front-wheeldrive model might even make more sense. Ford is one of many manufacturers that offers a choice of transmissions in this market and here we’re taking a look at its 2WD Kuga range. Ford doesn’t encourage its Kuga customers to drive their vehicles down dried out river beds or through swamps. The manufacturer makes no bones about the fact that this is one offroader that’s designed to live out its life on the tarmac. The Kuga certainly feels at home in its native environment, handling with far more composure than rival models that have more off-road ability built in. Even the 4WD Kugas send 95 per cent of drive to the front wheels most of the time, only directing more power to the rear wheels when slip is detected at the front, so it’s unlikely that buyers of the 2WD cars will notice much difference on the school run. What they lose is the added traction that 4WD models supply on tricky surfaces. It’s diesel power or bust for 2WD Kuga buyers with all variants powered by a 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi 134bhp diesel engine with standard particulate filter and a six-speed manual transmission. The engine provides 320Nm of torque at 2,000rpm and 340Nm should you really put your foot down and need what Ford calls “transient overboost”. The 0-60mph sprint takes 10.6s which is 0.1s faster than the fractionally heavier 4x4 cars. The front-wheel-drive models come in both of the Kuga’s trim levels – Zetec and Titanium. The Zetec models come with keyless start, 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, ESP stability control, anti lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and an MP3 connector to plug into your iPod. If you’re feeling a little more flush, an additional sum nets you the Titanium which gets part leather trim, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlights, cruise control, blue tinted glass and dual climate control. Pricing is over £1,800 less than the equivalent 4x4 models and that in a nutshell is what will turn most customers on to 2WD.

Park/ride potential THE park-and-ride concept is underdeveloped in the UK compared with the rest of Europe, according to the AA. Park-and-ride is well organised in the UK but on a smaller scale than elsewhere in Europe even though more than 80 per cent of UK drivers are keen on it, research showed. The Government should consider introducing park-and-ride schemes from motorway service stations or busy motorway junctions into major cities such as London and Bristol, the AA said. The Eurotest consortium, of which the AA is a partner, asked motoring organisations around Europe to provide examples of park-and-ride schemes for comparison of extent, cost and other features. Across the 17 cities in 14

countries surveyed, the average ratio of park-and-ride spaces to citizens was one to 356. Sheffield, the selected UK city, fared slightly better than the average with a ratio of one to 302. However, the cities with more comprehensive schemes in Germany, Finland and Norway provide one park-and-ride space for every 180 or so citizens. Across the sample, an average of 43 per cent of parking spaces are free of charge to use – exactly the proportion provided by Sheffield. The average most expensive cost of using park-and-ride in the 17 cities was £8.26. However, in half the cities surveyed – including Sheffield – the most drivers needed to pay for using park-and-ride for the day was less than £5.

CORSA RANGE FOR many people in the market for a supermini, one of the old Vauxhall Corsas would never have made the shortlist. It's a cut-throat market and while the Corsa covered all the bases adequately, there was just too much excellence among the opposition to make it stand out. That said, the Corsa was the UK’s best selling supermini of 2005, ahead of the likes of the Renault Clio, the Ford Fiesta and the Peugeot 206. Even with this level of success, Vauxhall realised it wouldn’t take long for the public to twig that the Peugeot 207, the Fiat Grande Punto and the Renault Clio III had easily overtaken the Corsa in terms of talent. Something needed to be done but rather than play a conservative hand, Vauxhall, for the very first time, set out to endow the Corsa with some genuine flair. No longer just a shopping trolley, the Corsa now has real impact. The front end features a deep Vauxhall Vgrille with aggressive air intakes under the bumper and a pair of headlamps that smear back along the wings. Bigger than the model it replaces, the Corsa shares a platform with Fiat's Grande Punto, the benefit of a rather complicated relationship between Fiat and General Motors that's too convoluted to go into here. Suffice to say, you may be reminded of the pretty Fiat when you spot the window by the A-pillar and the rather unconventional door outlines. Climb inside and, if you're used to

The quality of materials used is leagues ahead of the old Corsa and like the Astra there's the bulletproof feeling of build quality that's as good as anything in the sector. Just about the only criticism of the Astra’s interior was that, although well built, it

didn’t offer a whole lot of slick design to catch the eye. The Corsa changes that particular script with translucent ambient lighting on the centre console switchgear, one of those “surprise and delight” features that adds the all-important showroom wow-factor. The round air

vents and big satellite navigation screen (available on high spec cars only) give the Corsa’s dash a far more modern, integrated look than the somewhat piecemeal integration of technology of the old car. Other smart ideas include “chameleon-style” Velcro and zip-off dash and trim parts

that can be changed to alter the personality of the Corsa’s cabin. Four petrol engines and two diesels are on offer. First up on the petrol menu are the 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre units. Also available is a 189bhp 1.6-litre VXR variant that will certainly give the Clio Renaultsport 197 and the Honda Civic Type-R something to think about. Able to hit 60mph in around 7 seconds and with a 140mph top speed, this should be the first Corsa to really appeal to hardcore car enthusiasts rather than pimply teens. There’s also a 150PS version of the same engine in a slightly more affordable SRi version. No modern supermini can get by without a decent diesel engine and Vauxhall fortunately have two at their disposal. The 123bhp 1.7-litre diesel spearheads the line up, with a budget 1.3-litre CDTi acting as the entry level option. Despite its strong sales figures, Vauxhall needed to give the Corsa a good whack up the backside and the latest model shows the benefits of this corporal approach. Smarter, prettier and a whole lot more sophisticated, the Corsa could well dominate sales charts for quite some time.

GOLF TDI ANYONE familiar with the fifth generation Volkswagen Golf is unlikely to be knocked out by the sight of the sixth generation car but writing the latest model off as a rehash of its forbear would be to do it a major disservice. A lot was changed in the creation of today’s Golf and once the lack of initial excitement has been conquered, there’s actually quite a bit to get excited about. Not least, the 2.0litre TDI common-rail diesel engines. Common-rail injection diesel engines are nothing new but this is the first Golf to get them. Prior generations have persevered with Volkswagen’s direct injection technology which was good for punchy performance but less so if you valued refinement and efficiency. Three versions of the 2.0-litre TDI common-rail engine are offered, ranging from the entry-level 109bhp unit to a 138bhp option and the 168bhp engine that powers the sporty GTD model. Rather than the lag-ridden power delivery of less sophisticated turbo diesel powerplants, these units produce a smooth flow of power and keep on giving high into the rev range. Even the 109bhp option can perform the 060mph sprint in 10.7s and although it’s a little noisier than the more powerful units, refinement is first class. The front end styling treatment of the MkVI Golf was first seen on the Scirocco coupe and its horizontal lines serve to make the car appear wider, lower and more planted on the road. Break out the tape measure and you’ll discover that this is not merely a stylistic illusion with the latest car being 27mm wider and 34mm lower than the MkV. At the rear, the light clusters have also been stretched width ways and the bumper is predominantly body-coloured for a classier look but from whichever angle you approach it, the car couldn’t be anything but a Golf. Inside, the dash design is more of an eye-opener. The instruments are tastefully designed with obvious Audi

influences and illuminate in crisp white light. The controls function with typical efficiency and the plastics quality is hard to fault compared to the Golf’s family hatch rivals. The trim levels offered initially are S, SE and GT with the entry-level 109bhp engine only available in S and SE form. Standard equipment includes body-coloured bumpers, door handles and mirrors plus twin exhaust pipes ensuring that even base models look impressively upmarket. Semi-automatic air-conditioning is also standard as is speed sensitive power steering,

remote central locking, seven airbags, ESP stability control, traction control and Volkswagen’s Electronic Differential Lock system. The Golf might be priced above its contemporaries but it does a convincing job of justifying the premium. The economy figures of the TDI common-rail diesel engines make happy reading. The 109bhp model can hit an outstanding 57.6mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 128g/km. That’s a great performance for a car of the Golf’s size and complexity. Even more remarkable is the

fact that the 138bhp engine, which uses a six-speed gearbox instead of the five-speed one, can match the less powerful unit’s performance at the pumps. The Golf is going to be an even tougher nut for the competition to crack in its latest form. Yes it’s a bit dull in some respects but that’s partly because it’s so proficient at what it does. The high pricing will be an issue for some buyers but look at what the extra money gets you – quality, comfort, fun and all in classiest family hatchback around.

bmw

Pretty and purposeful styling will be hard to match Z4 ROADSTER BMW is never shy about reminding anyone who’ll listen that it builds ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’. It’s quite a boast and one that can only deepen the resolve of rival brands in their efforts to knock the boys from Munich off their self-proclaimed perch. Such competition can only mean more exciting cars for us because if BMW’s bullish promotional claims are to continue holding water, its products need to stay ahead of the pack. The desire to do exactly that is evident in the latest Z4 Roadster, a sports car that aims to raise the bar in a number of key areas. BMW’s engines rarely leave much room for disappointment and the Z4 has a mouth-watering line-up at its disposal. The three six-cylinder options open with a 2.5-litre 204bhp unit and even at this level Z4 owners will be able to experience the far side of 60mph just 6.6s after a standing start.

FACTS CAR: BMW Z4 Roadster PRICES: £30,000 - £45,000 - on the road [est] INSURANCE GROUPS: 16-20 [est] CO2 EMISSIONS: 199-219g/km PERFORMANCE: [sDrive30i] Max Speed 155mph/ 0-60mph 5.8s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [sDrive30i] (Combined) 30mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS with EBD, DSC [est] Next comes the 258bhp 3.0-litre engine which is capable of a 5.8s 060mph sprint and the twin-turbo range topper which gets 306bhp and a 5.2s sprint from its 3.0-litre capacity. All Z4 models get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard but there are also a couple of automatic options. The 2.5 and 3.0 units get a six-speed auto

with wheel-mounted paddle shifters that blunts 0-60mph performance slightly, while the twin-turbo 3.0-litre engine can be specified with a sevenspeed twin clutch transmission so slick it actually improves the 0-60mph blast to just 5.1s. The Z4’s roof will get almost as

much attention as the contents of its engine bay because, following the lead of the BMW 3-Series Convertible, it’s made out of metal. BMW has set out to disprove the school of thought that says folding hard-top roofs are a bad idea in focused sports cars with a light weight

electro-hydraulic arrangement that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds. The need to make space to stow a great slab of ironwork to keep the rain out can deal a fatal blow to the styling of a convertible, particularly a compact two-seater like the Z4 but BMW’s designers appear to have avoided this. The tell tail distended rear end isn’t in evidence and roof up or roof down, the Z4 looks taught and well-proportioned. BMW’s model naming policy for the Z4 requires a little explanation. All models are badged sDrive and as is often the case with the marque’s products, the numerical designations appear to correspond to engine size but don’t. The base model is the Z4 sDrive23i and has the 2.5-litre engine then comes the sDrive30i with the 3.0-litre unit and the sDrive35i with the twin-turbo 3.0-litre power option. The hope is that the technological innovations on the latest Z4 wows buyers while the pretty but purposeful styling seals the deal. Whatever the outcome, this is one Z that’ll be very hard to catch.

used cars The Gazette

Your essential Friday guide to buying second-hand vehicles

and you’ll find fit and finish that five years ago was the preserve of the executive class. The Ford Fiesta (post 02) has proved very popular and a number of used examples are now starting to enter the system and if you want something lightly. You could also track down low mileage examples of Honda’s ingenious Jazz and the MINI.

SUPERMINI THE cars we’re considering here are those that fall directly into the recognised Supermini sector: in other words, Ford Fiestas, Vauxhall Corsas and the like.

CHEAP & CHEERFUL

There’s huge choice at whatever level you’re buying into the Supermini market of course – but nowhere more than here. We’ve picked out the first MK1 version of Vauxhall’s popular Corsa as a strong buy, purely because it’s well built and there are so many from which to choose. A newer-feeling choice for similar money could be Ford’s post ‘95 Fiesta, a big improvement on the version it replaced and great to drive if you can stretch to one of the 16-valve engine versions. Other good alternatives include a post ‘94 VW Polo and Rover’s post ‘95 200.

AFFORDABLE MID-RANGERS

Older choices would include first examples of the post ‘88 MK2 Renault Clio or original Peugeot 206s - or you could go for something less mainstream like a Rover 25, a Daewoo Lanos or a Honda Logo. It’s the new Superminis that have really moved the sector forward howev-

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Stop-start city motoring will have placed plenty of strain on the clutch, the brakes and the suspension and there will be plenty of carefully concealed parking scrapes on older cars. Keep a lookout for shiny steering wheel rims and gear knobs, plus sagging seats: all indicate a high mileage.

WHAT TO PAY

Small car superstars er. Outstanding cars like the Skoda Fabia, the Toyota Yaris and even the post ‘00 Fiat Punto are highly recommended and you could also consider alternatives like the post ‘88 VW Polo

or Daihatsu’s under-rated Sirion.

DESIRABLE BUT POTENTIALLY PRICEY Resolutely modernist designs like

Nissan’s Micra are now the flavour du jour in this part of the market and the level of interior quality has taken a massive hike. Take a drive in a late Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Polo or SEAT Ibiza

Cheap & Cheerful: [Older] Vauxhall Corsa 1.2i Merit – £800-£1,400 (P to Rplate); [Newer] Ford Fiesta 1.2 Zetec – £2,300£3,100 (V to X-plate). Affordable Mid-Rangers: [Older] Renault Clio 1.2 16v Sport – £3,000£3,300 (X to Y-plate); [Newer] Toyota Yaris 1.3 16v CDX – £3,500-£5,200 (V to 02-plate). Desirable But Potentially Pricey: [Older] Audi A2 1.4SE – £5,700-£6,400 (X to Y-plate); [Newer] MINI One – £6,400-£7,100 (Y to 51-plate).
