itain’s coolest Blues Band makes a welcome return to the area on Saturday thanks to Alan Pearson’s Towerblues. Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes will be playing at Breck Road’s Poulton Community Hall – a venue that’s fast becoming known for quality live music. Although hailed as the best blues band in Britain, things didn’t happen overnight for Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes. It took years of hard work and application. Right now, the King Snakes are a refreshing mixture of (relative) youth and experience. The experience starts at the top, for Paul Lamb has spent the last 30+ years whoopin’ and hollerin' in clubs in his native North-East plus a later move to London, in concert and on festival stages, creating a personal synthesis of his harmonica heroes and his own unique and innate talent. His history includes representing Britain in the World Harmonica Championships, working with his mentor, Sonny Terry, and with other blues artists. The original band – Smokestack Lightning – started in 1979 and metamorphosed through Barfly, then into the Blues Burglars who made their recording debut, Breaking In, for Red Lightnin’ in 1986. Down in London the next incarnation was as the Paul Lamb Blues Band, with Rod Demick on bass and (for a while) exYardbird Jim McCarty on drums, plus long-term associate John Whitehill on lead guitar. However, it was as Paul Lamb and the King Snakes that they cut their album for Blue Horizon. It was this dedication to his craft that began to pay off, with Paul was voted Instrumentalist Of The Year by the British Blues Connection, an accolade that would be his for six successive years, the band were UK Blues Band Of The Year for the next

A clutch of other well received albums followed including Harmonica Man – an anthology of all that had gone before, including the title track, Paul's single as ‘Bravado’ for Pete

very couple of years, the comedy establishment seemingly anoints two bright young things as guardians of the nation’s fickle sense of humour. First it was Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, then came Matt Lucas and David Walliams, and more recently Peep Show duo David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Now, James Corden and Mathew Horne, stars of the brilliant, and deservedly, award-winning sitcom Gavin & Stacey, accept the mantle with this horror spoof that wedges a tongue in cheek and a stake in its heart. Unfortunately, it’s an exceedingly poor choice for the leads to showcase their undeniable talents. The tone throughout is juvenile, ogling the frequently topless female cast and littering the script with puerile humour and copious expletives. Lesbian Vampire Killers may be many things – clumsy, dull, almost completely starved of laughs – but sophisticated certainly isn’t one of them.

A scientist (Nicolas Cage) discovers the countdown to Armageddon in his son’s time capsule in the thriller KNOWING (Wednesday and Thursday previews in Blackpool and Cleveleys)... Michael Sheen portrays legendary football manager Brian Clough in the sporting biopic THE DAMNED UNITED... a terrified mother (Virginia Madsen) struggles to protect her son (Kyle Shortly after his unfaithful girlfriend Judy (Lucy Gaskell) dumps him for the seventh time, eternal slacker Jimmy Maclaren (Matthew Horne) begrudgingly agrees to go hiking with his girlcrazed best friend, Fletch (James Corden). The duo huffs and puffs all the way to the village of Cragwich, blissfully unaware that the locals have been cursed for centuries by Carmilla, the Lesbian Vampire Queen (Silvia Colloca). Every time a local girl turns 18, she is transformed into a Sapphic fanged fiend. Jimmy and Fletch join forces with a campervan full of sexy, foreign student girls – Lotte

(MyAnna Buring), Heidi (Tiffany Mulheron), Trudi (Ashley Mulheron) and Anke (Louise Dylan) – to despatch Camilla and her undead minions. A disgruntled local vicar (Paul McGann), who possesses an ancient sword with the power to send Camilla to hell, joins the good fight as one by one, the girls succumb to a hungry army of lascivious lesbian vampires. The two leads strive hard to inject life into the limp script but their tomfoolery is irritating rather than endearing.

ulia Roberts and Clive Owen reunite in the highly anticipated new film from writer/director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), set in the high stakes arena of corporate espionage. Words are meaningless in this comic caper because everyone is bluffing to some extent, concealing true intentions behind a compliment, or seemingly genuine smile. We don’t know who to trust – if anyone – as the intricate plot unfolds, right up to the final frame when the myriad knots untangle and the winners and losers in the elaborate scam discover their fate. In a world where every identity could be an elaborate illusion and every declaration of love a barefaced lie, who do you trust? Gilroy gleefully pulls the rug from under us at the same time as the characters, relishing each hairpin twist and turn. The chronologically fractured structure helps to conceal some of these sleights of hand, at the expense of dramatic momentum. The fog does lift in closing scenes but by then, some members of the audience may be a tad exhausted, performing mental gymnastics without any obvious payoff. a product that, once patented, could make either company market leaders and a small fortune. In order to stay one step ahead of the competition, Claire and Ray double, and triple-cross, using every trick in the book (and inventing a few new ones) to ensure they get the relevant documents first. However, the former spies soon realise that all of their training cannot immunise them to mutual attraction, which frequently leads to the bedroom. “You know what, do your worst, because it was worth it, incredibly worth it,’’ smirks Ray after the pair give into lust. Again. Duplicity establishes the animosity between Tully and Garsik with a very funny opening sequence, filmed entirely in slow motion, of the two men scrapping like children on a private airfield. The playfulness permeates Gilroy’s dialogue, especially the sexually heated exchanges between Claire and Ray, like when she confronts him over skimpy underwear found in his closet. “The only woman who has been in here is the landlady,’’ he protests. “And frankly, she couldn’t wear those as a wristband!’’ It’s frothy and energetic entertainment in a similar vein to Ocean’s Eleven and its sequels, and with similarly sun-kissed locations. Roberts and Owen spark off each other, compelling us to take sides as the battle of the sexes escalates into an all-out war, in which the slightest weakness is mercilessly exploited. Trust no one.

e-energised dining pub, The Horns Inn at Churchtown, is giving a whole new meaning to bringing home the bacon. To celebrate Connoisseurs Bacon Week, it is offering a daily prize of two main course bacon dishes to the first two diners to mention this special Bacon Week offer daily until Sunday. This could see diners tucking in to delights such as chicken breast stuffed with Stilton, wrapped in smoked streaky bacon and served with chunky chips and salad. Other choices could be bacon chop on a bed of mash, topped with carrot crisps and served with wholegrain mustard sauce, or streaky bacon and chicken salad. All of the tasty bacon served at The Horns Inn comes from local meat producer Clarksons. A BUDDING young actor from Kirkham has been helping set the stage alight at Blackpool Grand Theatre. Carr Hill High School Student Adam Peet-Harrison (right) was lucky enough to scoop a role in JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls. The smash hit production, directed by the acclaimed Stephen Daldry, has won more awards than any other play in history and was recently enjoyed by Blackpool theatre goers. Adam, who is 11, scooped a small part after his gran saw auditions in the Gazette. He said: “Doing Inspector Calls

I had no lines to learn but it was hard as I had act my part out without the support of any words. “I was really pleased when I got the role - they were looking for a girl, a younger boy and an

older boy and I got the part of the older boy. “I was on stage for about 25 minutes of an hour and a half show.” Adam regularly attends Phil Winston’s Theatreworks School in Blackpool and is no stranger to the world of showbusiness. He has appeared in Fame at Preston’s Charter Theatre as well as a TV advertising campaign. He also worked alongside XFactor finalists Same Difference at the opening of a Blackpool tourist attraction and is learning lines for a stage production of Billy Elliot where he is understudy for the role of Michael.
