he Kite Club flies again from this weekend - and this time it is spreading its wings to new and sometimes overlooked venues. Tomorrow sees the Fylde Coast debut of The Joscho Stephan Trio who will perform in The Rowan Suite at Ribby Hall Village in Wrea Green, admission £12.50. Tickets can be bought on the night or reserved from stugt@hotmail.com or go to www.thekiteclub.co.uk for further booking details. “I am taking the Kite Club around the parishes of the Fylde instead of staying in one location,” says Kite Club organiser Stuart Walmsley. “However the bigger gigs will still be held at the Tower Lounge in Blackpool. “Ribby Hall has many facilities and the Rowan Suite is a superb, plush room with tabled seating and a full bar. There is ample free parking with hotel accommodation and restaurants.” Joscho Stephan’s roots lie in Gipsy Swing music, the style pioneered in the 1930s by the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Joscho Stephan has not merely absorbed this music, but also interprets it on the highest level and is extending its boundaries. Despite his youth, after four highly acclaimed CDs and a DVD he has played his way into the illustrious circle of the finest Gipsy Swing musicians in the world. Great jazz musicians such as Paquito de Rivera, James Carter, Charlie Mariano and Grady Tate enthusiastically praised the talented newcomer after performing together. He has toured Australia with top guitarists Martin Taylor and Tommy Emmanuel and has performed with his own bands (trio to quintet) at numerous important European festivals. His concert appearances in New York's Lincoln Centre and the American country capital

Tender tale up for grabs C

THE INTERNATIONAL (15) Rating: 6/10

A BRILLIANT bittersweet comedy newly released on DVD is Then She Found Me - and you could win a prize copy. Adapted from Elinor Lipman’s novel of the same name, Helen Hunt makes her feature directing debut with this touching story of schoolteacher April Epner (Hunt) and her very unlikely path towards personal fulfillment. Following the separation from her husband (Matthew Broderick) and the death of her adopted mother, April is contacted by her apparent birth mother (Bette Midler), who turns out to be a local talk show host Bernice Graves. As Bernice tries to become the mother to April that she was never able to be, April seems to find solace in the arms of the parent of one of her students (Colin Firth), only to find that the mystery to life’s questions cannot be solved by a simple revelation. A film that is charming and tender as well as intelligent, Then She Found Me (15) has been released by Chelsea Films, rrp £15.99. To win a prize copy, name the film in which Helen Hunt chased tornadoes across the USA. ould the timing be more perfect for a conspiracy thriller that paints the banking community as moustache-twirling villains? With the blame for the credit crunch being leveled squarely at financial institutions, which allowed savers to borrow well above their means, The International chooses a sitting duck as its primary target. Screenwriter Eric Warren Singer was inspired by the downfall of the Bank of Credit and Commercial International, which collapsed in 1991, just as UK and US legislators discovered details of arms dealings and money laundering. From the seed of corporate shame blooms a fast-paced, action-packed work of fiction, pitting two ordinary people against a huge global machine with tentacles that reach into the upper echelons of power. Money speaks louder than principles – it controls global politics, drives people to commit desperate acts and finances terrorism and wars which leave entire nations clamouring for survival. Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) uncovers evidence of serious infringements within one of the world’s most powerful banks and resolves to bring the institution’s boardroom to justice. Jonas Skarssen (Ulrich Thomsen), Wilhelm Wexler (Armin MuellerStahl) and their partners are wise to the investigation and hire a hit man called The Consultant (Brian F. O’Byrne) to eliminate this pesky thorn in their side. Joining forces with Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts), Louis follows the money around the world, travelling from Berlin and Milan to New York and Istanbul in the hope of gathering enough proof to expose the dodgy dealings.

TEAM EFFORT: Naomi Watts and Clive Owen (above)

However, the men in power will stop at nothing to protect their investments, even murder. The International is distinguished by a couple of brilliantly orchestrated

action sequences. An assassination attempt on a prominent politician is a masterclass in sustained tension and slick editing, with terrific use of over-

However, the piece de resistance is a running gun battle in the iconic Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York, where Louis and an unlikely ally has to somehow evade heavily armed goons to make their escape. The entire building is riddled with bullets and shattered glass. The suspense dissipates a little as the plot gallivants around Europe; the ending in particular is an anti-climax. Owen is strong as a man of conviction willing to go to any lengths in the name of justice but Watts is almost surplus to requirements, off screen for all of the pivotal moments.

This ‘comedy’ will leave you cold HOPELESSLY misconceived and poorly executed, New In Town is a tiresome comedy reminiscent of Sweet Home Alabama that careens awkwardly from slapstick to heartbreak via tedium and incredulity. Screenwriters Kenneth Rance and C Jay Cox set most of the film in the tiny Minnesotan town of New Ulm, full of eccentric characters, who evidently live just down the road from Fargo. The Scandinavian-American accents and bizarre colloquialisms are laid on thick from the opening scene, in which four women sit around a kitchen table talking tapioca. Nice people, but they are sketched so flimsily, you fear they will blow over in one strong gust of wind. Into the winter wonderland comes ambitious executive Lucy Hill (Renee Zellweger), who has been

snow, more snow, the odd stray cow in the middle of the road and union representative Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick Jr), who intends to safeguard the jobs of as many employees as possible. The locals, including Munck Foods secretary Blanche Gunderson (Siobhan Fallon Hogan) and local realtor Trudy Van Uuden (Frances Conroy), welcome Lucy with a warm smile. At first, Lucy clashes with all and sundry, even firing plant foreman Stu Kopenhafer (JK Simmons). However, she soon settles into town life and discovers an affinity with her neighbours. New In Town is fatally flawed by design. The cast don’t stand a chance. The romance between Zellweger and Connick Jr leaves us as cold as a blast of that sub-zero wind. The leading lady gamely embraces all of the physical comedy, like getting stuck in a jumpsuit and falling over in the show, but Zellweger alone cannot polish something that is dull to its frozen core.

Clint superb as an embittered war veteran GRAN TORINO (15) Rating: 8.5/10

Vigilante violence

n what reportedly will be his final appearance in front of a camera, Clint Eastwood delivers a tour-de-force performance as a xenophobic war veteran in this timely, humanist drama. While the rest of America looks to conflicts raging overseas, the veteran actor and director picks his thematic battles much closer to home. In particular, he examines the clashes of ideals in predominantly white, blue-collar neighbourhoods, where the ethnic and cultural make-up has been irrevocably altered by the influx of immigrants. This volatile mix of old and new, east and west, explodes with devastating consequences in Gran Torino, a powerful tale of modern-day vigilantism based on a script by Nick Schenk. At the emotional heart of the story is Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood), a man haunted by his experiences in the Korean War and consumed by grief over the death of his beloved wife. He is a man of few words, none of them kind, who harbours resentment towards everyone around him, including his two sons, Mitch (Brian Haley) and Steve (Brian Howe). The old coot has no interest in the sermons of local priest Father Janovich (Christopher Carley), and even less time for the Asian nextdoor neighbours he labels “swamp rats.’’ When Hmong gang-banger Spider (Doua Moua) and his four-strong posse scrap with neighbour’s son Thao (Bee Vang) on his lawn, Walt intervenes with his rifle. Spider and co flee the scene and Thao’s older sister Sue (Ahney Her) shows her gratitude by strengthening ties between the two households. Against the odds, Walt finds himself warming to his neighbours and he takes Thao under his wing, encouraging the lad to become the man of his house. However, Spider and his gang have Walt and his protege in their sights and the only language they understand begins with the pull of a trigger. A boring yarn of supernatural silliness A PREPOSTEROUS supernatural yarn that keeps a straight face while the rest of us snigge. This is generic horror hokum that awkwardly uses the Holocaust as a backdrop to an outlandish tale of secret experiments and evil spirits. Leading lady Odette Yustman spends longer than is strictly necessary in just her underwear, wailing like a banshee as her accursed heroine is stalked by Jerusalem crickets and a demon child. Copious dream sequences and hallucinations –

THE UNBORN (15) Rating: 4/10

like a mirror that rattles in the night and a creepy, masked bulldog – drag out the character’s ordeal until the demon handily reveals itself to the supporting cast, giving credence to her raving. The plot unfolds in fits and spurts, only making the whole enterprise more laughable as characters spill key information about dead twins and a

mythological, shape-shifting force called a dybbuk without winking an eye, as if they were discussing the weather forecast. Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) has never forgiven her mother for taking her life. Soldiering on with her father Gordon (James Remar), Casey begins to suffer disturbing visions and one of her eyes changes colour. Unable to cope, Casey and her boyfriend Mark (Cam Gigandet) turn to Rabbi Sendak (Gary Oldman) who suggests exorcism.

Marcel markets musical madness By Robin Duke Entertainment Editor

t’s another big one at The Syndicate on Saturday with the return of Goodgreef with Trance legend Marcel Woods , plus a full one hour “live show” from Giuseppe Otavianni. Also on the night is up-and-coming new man of the moment Sied Van Riel as well as Goodgreef resident Jordan Suckley and Syndicate promoter and resident DJ Jason Fubar. “It promises to be another amazing night of Future Trance with a twist of the excellent live show element from Italy’s Giuseppe Ottaviani,” says Jason. With an unrivalled list of banging floor fillers to his credit, Marcel Woods refuses repetition and is on a constant quest for innovations. One of the greatest DJs in the Netherlands, he thinks outside the box, leaving trance and techno labels far behind him. Musical Madness has become the creed under which Marcel flies the world, with the last five years being first class all the way. But it’s not just DJing, it’s also producing massive tracks, with the 2006 official Trance Energy Anthem Advanced a bestseller in every territory around the globe and setting the benchmark for future projects. Playlist support has been nothing

MUSIC MEN: Marcel Woods and (above left) Giuseppe Otavianni short of comprehensive, with A list trance DJs such as Tiësto, Paul van Dyk and Armin van Buuren hammering Marcel’s productions alongside harder edged DJs such as Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell and Yoji Biomehanika. Giuseppe Ottaviani from Viterbo, a small Italian town near Rome, studied classical music as a teen, before he discovered electronic music and started to spin his first DJ-sets at clubs and on local radio stations. His deep enthusiasm for anything related to technology led to him beginning to use his computer to make and produce his own music, and when he met Andrea Ribeca in 1999 (an electronic music enthusiast and also DJ) both quickly decided to start their own music project: NU NRG – Giuseppe’s

Since that time he has released club anthems like Dreamland, the Spaceflower EP, Butterfly, Casino, Connective and the smash hit Free Fall and won numerous awards like the Trance Award in 2004 and 2006 for Best Live Act. Sied Van Deal is being tipped by Tiësto as “the hottest producer around” and by DJ Magazine as “the next big thing to hit trance”. Aged just 10 years old, Sied’s introduction to dance music came via Acid House. But it wasn’t until early 2006 that Sied produced his first track, Fearless. Released on Sub Traxx, it was smashed by early advocate Tiësto and proved to be a vital first strike in his music career.

ake his a double... Customers at The Sandhills in St Annes Square have been doing a double take at newly appointed manager Adrian Clay. “Some of them think I look just like the bloke behind the bar at The Raikes in Blackpool,” says Adrian, who has been at the Barracudaowned hostelry for the past few weeks. Then again they could be forgiven for their confusion because it is, in fact, the same man. Adrian and his wife Jeanette swapped the Blackpool town centre party scene for the historic Raikes two years ago after five years making the Litten Tree in Queen Street one of the resort’s busiest and most awarded pubs. But having put the Liverpool Road pub back into the heart of the community Adrian felt ready for another challenge.

“Barracuda asked if I was interested and after a whirlwind meeting I was offered management of The Sandhills,” he said. “They knew I’d got my own place but they were keen for me to try and bring some consistency to the business after a couple of management changes so a deal was done.” After discussing the move with Jeanette, the couple decided she would stay managing The Raikes whilst Adrian does the daily commute to St Annes. He describes The Sandhills as “a fantastic pub in a fantastic town with fantastic potential” and is particularly hoping to boost the venue’s evening trade. Now he’s hoping to introduce an element of live entertainment to the pub– just as he did with The Raikes – as well as a poker night, quiz night and more sport. “We need to raise the profile of the place and there are exciting times ahead,” he said.

Pink Hearse founder member Katlow, London-based Blackpool duo Troubadour and young vocalist Ryan Cregan beat off competition from hundreds of others on the day. They will now compete live on stage in the Live and Unsigned Manchester regionals at The Willows in Salford. Auditions kicked off across the UK in January and over the course of a month judges will be seeing over 10,000 auditionees, to discover those who have the potential to be professional recording artists. In the only competition of its kind, each act was asked to audition live in front of a judging panel, instead of judging on demo tapes or recordings. The judges looked at a range of genres including punk, rock, acoustic, pop, urban and electronic, and were searching for an original act who had the live ability to impress an audience of over 2,000 alongside a number of industry judges and A&R associates. Live and Unsigned 2009 is the UK’s largest competition for live acts and artists who are original and unsigned. The three local acts will now join other successful performers in Salford on March 29 when they will be asked to perform a sample of their original material as well as a cover to illustrate their versatility. Kiddo360, a band from Wales, were the winners of Live and Unsigned 2008 and have since won the Vodafone award for best Live and Unsigned act alongside acts such as Kate Nash, The Ting Tings and Primal Scream held at Brixton Academy in London. Jazz stars at hotel

TRADITIONAL outfit the Mike Carnie Jazz All Stars are the star attraction at Lancashire’s newest jazz venue, the Crofters Hotel, Garstang, on Sunday (8pm).

TONIGHT sees the first of two shows at the Grand Theatre’s Lawrence House Studio featuring original members of the 60s British blues boom. Next month sees the appearance of blues/jazz bandleader/actor/writer Zoot Money, and tonight’s show stars The Bob Hall Show featuring Top Topham. Acknowledged as Britain’s finest blues and boogie pianist, Bob Hall’s electrifying keyboard wizardry and finely crafted songs have influenced generations of piano players.

He first came to fame in the 60s R‘n’B explosion, backing John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walter among others, and subsequently leading bands including members of The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Manfred Mann. The Bob Hall Show is pure enjoyment, with unrivalled energy and enthusiasm. Much credit for this goes to Bob’s long-time partner, Hilary Blythe, whose crystal-clear harmony vocals and rock-steady bass playing underpin all his performances.

Murder on the menu

IF you fancy a bit of murder and mystery with your meal then The Villa at Wrea Green is the place to be later this month. After their last sell-out appearance there, murder mystery specialists the Dark Nights Theatre Company are returning with A Party To Murder – a whodunnit based on a birthday celebration. The evening is on Friday, March 27, from 7.15pm and tickets are £29 each which includes the entertainment and a three course meal (£59 to include overnight accommodation). Reservations can be made on (01772) 684347.

ne of Blackpool’s best known Indian restaurants is now bigger and better. The Lee Raj on Squires Gate Lane has almost doubled its size, completely changed its image and introduced a brand new menu featuring several dishes which are exclusive to the area. A new stand-alone takeaway outlet has also been opened, meaning customers no longer have to wait inside the main restaurant for their orders. The changes have been introduced by restaurateur Abu Chowdhury who has returned to the venue after an extended spell in India and Dubai due to family commitments. “The Lee Raj has always had a loyal customer base from South Shore and St Annes but I felt the place needed reinventing with a more contemporary feel,” he said. “Situated where we are actually works to our advantage with people able to get away from the pub and club crowd to enjoy their meal and drinks in a more civilised environment.” Converting adjacent premises has meant the restaurant now has 120 covers as well as an extended bar area and the new takeaway. Decorated with a mainly black and white colour scheme, it has a city centre feel which Mr Chowdhury is confident will attract customers from across the area. “I have introduced a lot of new dishes to the menu and several of them are not available anywhere else on the Fylde Coast,” he said. “We now have a lot more fish dishes than we used to as well as a full range of Indian desserts which we make on the premises and which are not available elsewhere.”

New chef’s pledge on quality at pub

BIG IDEAS: Grahame Tinnion

THERE’S no half measures at the Halfway House, now that new head chef Grahame Tinnion is in charge. A tenth generation Sandgrownun’, Grahame has come out of early retirement to take over the cooking at the popular Squires Gate pub. Grahame retired back to Blackpool a couple of years ago having run cafes and restaurants on the Isle of Man, where his wife comes from. Now in sole charge of the food operation at the Halfway House, he intends converting what is currently an underused games room and bar into “GT’s” – a traditionally dressed restaurant with carvery visible from

the street outside and full waitress service. “With drinks prices creeping up and smokers being kept outside there has been an upsurge of interest in eating out – especially in pubs,” says Grahame. “I will be offering value for money and quality locally sourced food but I won’t be going down the bargain basement “two for a fiver” promotions. The potential for success here is enormous.” His policy seems to be working – Sunday carveries have shot from double figures to treble and weekday trade has likewise increased in leaps and bounds.

“There is a statement of intent at the front of my menu which says I will change any meal and give a full refund if someone has a genuine complaint,” he says. “So far there have only been two – and neither were about the quality of the food.” Food ranges from snacks such as toasted crumpets with beans and cheese for £1.95, omelettes at £2.95 to smoked haddock fishcakes at £3.15, grilled plaice at £5.25 to main course 8oz sirloin steak with all the trimmings at £8 and home made burgers. Awards celebrate the best of fine dining LANCASHIRE’S internationally acclaimed cask-ale brewer Moorhouse’s celebrated the success of the north’s top dining destinations at the recent 25th Hi-Life Dining Awards event. The independent Burnley brewer sponsored the Best North West Restaurant

category at the celebrity dinner, with the accolade scooped by the Thyme@theSirloin Inn at Hoghton, near Preston – also a Moorhouse’s customer. A fiercely fought contest – hailed as The Dining Oscars of the north – saw Hi-Life diners vote in several

categories to find the region’s top dining spots. Held at Manchester’s five-star Hilton Hotel in the Beetham Tower, the charity event was attended by many of the region’s showbusiness personalities including several members of the Coronation Street and Hollyoaks cast.

Last year The Thyme@ the Sirloin took the Best Lancashire Restaurant accolade. Moorhouse’s managing director David Grant said: “Thyme@the Sirloin is a terrific restaurant that upholds Lancashire’s long standing and well deserved reputation for top dining.

Recognition at this prestigious event was extremely well deserved. “We are very keen to support this event and promote the tradition of excellence of Lancashire’s hospitality industry. That the North West’s winner is also one of our customers is, of course, great news.”
