WHAT’S ON

ith the nation seemingly having forgiven presenter Jonathan Ross for his much publicised broadcasting indiscretions and his television and radio show proving as popular as ever, now it’s comedian and actor Russell Brand’s turn to put himself back in the spotlight with his latest nationwide tour. Some 20 months after making his Blackpool debut, he’s back at the Opera House tonight after dates at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Monday and Manchester Apollo on Wednesday and Thursday. But anyone expecting a hint of apology or contrition from the controversial performer might as well ask for their money back before the show starts. Despite national red tops claiming the tour had only sold out after Ross and Brand’s headline hitting antics, all tickets were were sold months ago.

Popular funnyman in town

Nevertheless it’s the comedian’s first public outing in the UK since he and Ross landed themselves in hot water for remarks made – and initially overlooked – during a radio show in which they left offensive messages on veteran actor Andrew Sachs’ phone answering machine. Not that it seems there really is no such as bad publicity – Ross’s viewing figures have leapt since his unpaid “holiday” and Brand’s self imposed exile to America only added a couple more noughts to his the bank balance of his burgeoning film career (though it has put his radio ambitions on hold for a while!). It’s been a whirlwind couple of years for the foppish funnyman. His scene-stealing per-

formance in Judd Apatow’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall drew widespread acclaim, enhancing the reputation he earned with Britflicks Penelope and St Trinians. He has more recently been seen in Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler and has been cast in Judd Apatow’s next feature, filming later this year. Russell’s stand up show has also been taking North America by storm. An appearance at Montreal's world-renowned comedy festival followed sell-out dates at New York’s Grammercy Theatre and Los Angeles’ Roxy. His autobiography My Booky Wook topped the UK best-seller list and sold in excess of 600,000 hardback copies.

THE SECRET OF MOONACRE (U) Rating: 6/10

ORPHANED at a young age, plucky 13-yearold Maria Merryweather (Dakota Blue Richards) is forced to leave behind her old life to seek lodgings with her eccentric and gruff uncle, Sir Benjamin Merryweather (Ioan Gruffudd), on the isolated Moonacre Valley estate. Accompanied by the caretaker, Miss Heliotrope (Juliet Stevenson), Maria soon learns of an ancient feud between her family and the De Noir clan, whose young son Robin (Augustus Prew) takes an immediate dislike to the teenage Merryweather. Maria realises that she holds the key to reuniting the warring estates by tracking down a set of magical pearls before the next full moon. ■ Dakota Blue Richards interview: Don’t miss Life! magazine free with Saturday’s Gazette

HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU (12A) Rating: 5/10

BASED on the book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, He’s Just Not That Into You is an ensemble drama-comedy about the affairs of the heart of myriad 20 and 30 something men and women living in present day Baltimore. The characters counsel one another on the pitfalls of mating and dating but amidst the tears, humiliation and occasional declaration of undying affection. He’s Just Not That Into You is a disappointingly familiar scrapbook of relationship highs and woes, culminating in the usual array of broken hearts, smouldering kisses and wedding vows.

Man of God stands accused of sinning

DOUBT (15) Rating: 8/10

I

n this 24-hour, digital age of CCTV cameras, the internet and the paparazzi, no sordid secret or lapse in judgement remains concealed forever. The truth will come out, splashed across a front page or captured live on the camera of an omnipresent mobile phone. Reading and seeing is believing. However, our hunger for news is insatiable and in the absence of solid facts, we often nourish that hunger with gossip and rumour. So, what happens when you believe something to be true, even though you have no tangible evidence to back up your suspicions? How far would you go in your pursuit of the absolute proof? “What do you do when you’re not sure? That’s the topic of my sermon today,’’ explains caring priest, Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), at the beginning of Doubt. Themes of certainty and suspicion underpin writer/director John Patrick Shanley’s film, adapted of his own Tony award-winning stage play of the same name, set in a ’60s Catholic school. In this hermetically sealed world of religion and rules, Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) rules with an iron fist. Trouble erupts when painfully naive Sister James (Amy Adams) confides to her ferocious superior that the holy man has “taken an interest’’ in one of the boys, Donald Miller (Joseph Foster II). When the head nun learns that Father Flynn spent time alone in the rectory with Donald, she draws

CATHOLIC CLASH: Meryl Streep as Sister Aloysius Beauvier and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Father Brendan Flynn

Coming soon Inspector Clouseau (Steve Martin) tracks down a notorious thief called The Tornado in THE PINK PANTHER 2... a pair of plucky orphans (Emma Roberts, Jake T Austin) secretly uses a dilapidated hotel as a refuge for stray animals in HOTEL FOR DOGS (Blackpool and Cleveleys previews Saturday and Sunday matinees), Jason Vorhees lives to slay another day in Marcus Nispel’s gory remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH and BOLT 2D (weekend previews Cleveleys and St Annes - with 3D version opening at Blackpool today). unsavoury conclusions, despite protestations from Sister James. “It’s my job to outshine the fox in cleverness. That is my job!’’ declares Sister Aloysius. “We are going to have to stop him ourselves.’’ Inviting Father Flynn into her office with Sister James as a witness (for the sake of propriety), Aloysius con-

fronts the man of God, determined to bully him into a confession of guilt. Instead, he pleads innocence. The situation spirals out of control when Sister Aloysius contacts Donald’s mother (Viola Davis) to apprise her of the supposed facts. Like Frost/Nixon, the film version of Doubt lacks the immediacy and

some of the palpable tension of the stage version but Shanley’s adaptation of his own source material is still a riveting game of cat and mouse. Streep devours the screen, eyes burning with indignation as the nun pursues her vendetta, engaging in some terrific verbal skirmishes with Hoffman’s besieged priest. Adams provides the meek voice of reason while Davis is stunning in just 10 minutes of screen time, taking our breath away with her character’s reaction to the unfounded allegations of child abuse. The balance of power shifts, our loyalties are torn and like Sister James, we try to remain unbiased in the eye of the storm.

Comedy fun from man’s best friend MAN’S best friend learns to stand on his own four paws in Byron Howard and Chris Williams’ computer animated comedy, which pokes fun at our obsession with celebrity. For more than 60 years, Walt Disney has been synonymous with exquisite, hand drawn animation, which redefines the way we looked at the world. Yet in recent years, the Disney brand has lost some of its lustre, supplanted by the rise of Pixar and its eye-popping brand of computer animation, as demonstrated in Toy Story, Finding Nemo and WALL-E.

BOLT 3D (U) Rating: 7/10

Now the two brands join forces for the very first time in Bolt. Breathlessly orchestrated action sequences and the requisite lashings of Disney sentiment guarantee top pedigree entertainment for the entire family, underscored with a message about the responsibilities that come with owning a four-legged friend. Since he was a pup, Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) has been the star of a hugely popular TV series of the same name, in

which he plays a genetically engineered canine with superpowers who saves plucky owner Penny (Miley Cyrus) from the clutches of the dastardly Dr Calico (Malcolm McDowell). Since Bolt has been raised on set and sleeps every night in a trailer, he truly believes that he is a superhero with the strength to charge down speeding vehicles. Bolt is a delightful romp for young and old alike, balancing thrills and spills with broad comedy, most resting in the excitable paws of Rhino, who might just be Bolt’s number one fan.

Beverley Hills Chihuahua (U)

All cinemas. What happens when a ridiculously pampered canine, who won’t leave the house without her bling, is stranded far from home? Bride Wars (PG) All cinemas. Strictly a chick flick, unless the thought of Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway fighting in the aisle appeals.

My Bloody Valentine 3D (18)

THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (12A) Rating: 8/10

B

ased on a short story by F Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is the frontrunner at this year’s Oscars with a hefty 13 nominations. Were it not for Slumdog Millionaire, David Fincher’s visually arresting, realist fable would probably sweep the board in a similar fashion to The English Patient. However, this technically dazzling, 166-minute epic still stands a good chance of cluttering the mantelpiece with golden statuettes. Claudio Miranda’s gorgeous cinematography shows off the majestic production design to the full, complemented by slick computer-generated effects and Alexandre Desplat’s heartstringplucking score. Yet there is something slightly awry in this fantastical tale of a man who grows younger not older with each passing day. Perhaps it’s the unshakeable feeling that we’re being emotionally manipulated, or the pacing, which seems to drag in places with Fincher’s directorial flourishes. The film opens in a New Orleans hospital room where Caroline (Julia Ormond) watches as her elderly mother Daisy (Cate Blanchett)

Odd journey through life clings to life. To pass the time, Caroline reads from an extraordinary journal. “My name is Benjamin Button and I was born under unusual circumstances...’’ confides the eponymous hero as we are transported back to 1918, when an expectant father (Jason Flemyng) races home to witness the birth of his son. Mr Button recoils in horror at the baby swaddled in a blanket: the mewling infant looks like an old man, with ossified bones and wrinkled skin, and will apparently die within hours. He abandons the child in the dead of night and African-American retirement home nurse Queenie (Taraji P Henson) takes pity on the

abandoned babe, raises him as her own. As Benjamin (Brad Pitt) grows older, he looks ever more youthful. When he is eventually strong and old enough to leave the retirement home, Benjamin seeks his fortune aboard a tugboat captained by a hard-drinking Irishman (Jared Harris) and finds romance with a beautiful ballet dancer called Daisy (Cate Blanchett), who will pirouette her way into his heart. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button recalls Forrest Gump, possessing the same scope and ambition as it juxtaposes an ordinary man’s extraordinary escapades against a backdrop of 20th century American history. Fincher orchestrates some stunning set pieces including an explosive encounter with a World War II U-boat and dazzling sequence about the cruelty of fate and coincidence. Digital trickery superimposes Pitt’s face onto the bodies of other actors until he is able to embrace the lead role entirely. He perfectly captures his character’s inner turmoil; the fear of forging emotional bonds with Daisy or the people he cares about because “while everybody else was ageing, I was getting younger, all alone.’’ Supporting performances are equally strong, notably Henson’s surrogate mother, who stares tenderly at Benjamin that first night and remarks, “You may be as ugly as an old pot... but you still a child of God.’’

Riccy takes charge at Toast THERE’S been a change at Toast Cafe Bar and Grill on Corporation Street in Blackpool. Owner Riccy Caunce has now taken over the reigns and has relaunched the town centre venue. “The management team I had in just weren’t coming up with the goods so it was time to start again and this time take control myself,” said Riccy, who opened the premises last year with a view to bringing a touch of big city style to the town centre. “The ideas I had just weren’t being put into practice.” So along with the managers and many of the original staff, out has gone the computerised ordering system. “The connections were poor because of where we were located so we have reverted to the good old fashioned system of writing orders down and taking them to the kitchen,” said Riccy. “It’s working fine now.” He admits that for a while customers were having to wait far too long for their food, but again “it’s a problem which has been ironed out”. Now Toast has also added tapas to its menu with a choice of 10 ranging from £3.25 to £4.45 a serving, including a paella of chorizo sausage, chicken and peas cooked in white wine and served with saffron rice, and sauté prawns in a pancetta and white wine cream sauce served on warm bruschetta. Daily special main courses included mussels, steak and ale pie and Thai curry. Riccy is also thinking of introducing a pie night to the venue. “It’s all been a learning curve but we are getting there, and now that I’m at the helm I will make sure everything runs smoothly,” he said.

Frank rings the changes FILIPINO’S in Poulton is being reinvented as The Matrix. The Breck Road venue now operates as a bar and eaterie but will soon be moving its upstairs drinking area on to the ground floor – and shifting the eating upstairs. “You don’t have to eat here to have a drink anymore so we are trying to create an atmosphere where people can come in and try us and see the changes we are in the process of making,” says the new man in charge, Frank Smithson who was co-owner of the former Viva La Diva showbusiness restaurant in Blackpool. “We aren’t rushing into anything but I’d like to develop a wide ranging tapas menu so people can eat as much or as little as they like.” He’s also keen on bringing back live music to the premises and will be starting next weekend with a Valentine’s Special. Swing and middle of the road singer Gary Thomas will be performing on Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14 – admission free.

HEALTHY FOOD: Chris and Paula Dorkins with their locally-sourced lamb kebab at the Cyprus Takeaway in Poulton Picture: ROB LOCK

By Robin Duke Entertainment Editor

P

oulton’s popular Cyprus Takeaway has hit back at a recent report that kebabs are bad for you. A survey of 76 councils across the country, which tested 490 kebabs, revealed that many contained worryingly large amounts of fat and salt, even before the addition of mayonnaise and other extras. Researchers found that the average kebab provided 98 per cent of the daily salt quota for an adult. A typical example also contained nearly 1,000 calories, which is half the daily recommended maximum for women, and

148 per cent of the daily saturated fat limit. Some 35 per cent of those kebabs which were labelled contained meat from several types of animal. Alarmingly, six kebabs tested positive for pork when it was not declared as an ingredient. Two of these were described as Halal. But Cyprus Takeaway proprietor Chris Dorkins says it is unfair to brand all kebabs as bad for you and cites the constant queues at his Blackpool Old Road outlet that they are not simply a post-pub or pre-club snack “Our doner kebab is hand-made daily from 100 per cent minced lamb,” said Chris. “We only add herbs, spices and seasoning – nothing else. We also offer

other alternatives such as chicken and lamb kebabs and for people with special dietary needs all our kebabs including doner are gluten-free and can be served in a gluten-free pitta bread if requested. “All our meats are locally sourced – chicken from Wilkinson’s Farm at Out Rawcliffe and lamb from Sam Clegg’s of Poulton.” He added: “It is a shame that the kebab market has become tarnished by mass produced rubbish kebabs made from minced up meat of indeterminate origin held together by rusk with additives and stabilisers and goodness knows what else – and sold by people who don’t care to find out.”
