A tale of wartime courage DURING the Holocaust, the fabric of society was torn almost beyond repair as entire nations bore witness, sometimes silently, to Hitler’s extermination of the Jews. Yet in the midst of shocking violence, there were beacons of hope to teach us lessons about mankind’s courage, strength and resilience. Based on the book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans by Nechama Tec, Edward Zwick’s historical drama relates a tale of heroism and sacrifice during the years of conflict in Europe. Unfortunately, awe and wonder about the incredible facts underpinning Zwick’s film

middle son Zus (Liev Schreiber) refuses to stand by as his people are wiped out.

gradually wane as the script, co-written with Clayton Frohman, distills facts at a pedestrian pace through competent action sequences and lacklustre verbal exchanges. As Hitler’s army marches through Belarussia, three Jewish brothers escape the onslaught to lead hundreds of survivors into the dense forests. While Tuvia Bielski (Daniel Craig) and his gentle, youngest sibling Asael (Jamie Bell) establish an ever-expanding community beneath the tree canopy, fiery-tempered

He abandons the refuge with men in tow and aligns himself with Viktor Panchenko (Ravil Isyanov), charismatic commander of a group determined to strike at the heart of the Nazi machine.

BRIDE WARS (PG) Rating: 6/10

BRIDE Wars is strictly a chick flick, unless the thought of Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway fighting in the aisle appeals.

In Zus’s absence, Tuvia struggles to maintain control of the rapidly swelling number of refugees, constantly meeting resistance from rival, Peretz Shorshaty (Martin Hancock) and his acolytes. Thankfully, the beautiful Lilka (Alexa Davalos) and young Asael help to keep Tuvia grounded.

Even then, women could well be affronted by the rather stereotyped versions of bridesto-be presented to them.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (15) Rating: 10/10

M

ore than 25 years after Gandhi swept all before it at the Academy Awards, another British film embedded in Indian culture is poised to conquer the world. Scripted by Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty), Slumdog Millionaire is an utterly irresistible rites of passage drama that builds to an extraordinary emotional crescendo. Employing a simple flashback structure, Danny Boyle’s modern day fairytale charts the extraordinary journey of an orphan from the slums of Mumbai to the contestant’s chair on his country’s version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The suspense within the television studio, where host Prem (Anil Kapoor) poses each multiple-choice question, is nothing compared to the tensions within Beaufoy’s multi-layered screenplay. In the space of a single vignette, the film glides from sidesplitting comedy to gut-wrenching despair, with an honesty and subtlety that continually catches us off guard. Indeed, there is as much darkness as light here, including scenes of torture, child abuse, exploitation and degradation that reflect the meagre lot of children

MODERN FAIRYTALE: Dev Patel as Jamal and Anil Kapoor as Prem Kumar in Slumdog Millionaire born into a rat run of makeshift housing, detritus, dirty water and shattered dreams. Slumdog Millionaire may just be the best film you see all year. Eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) has been raised by older brother Salim (Madhur Mittal) since the boys lost their mother to the violence of a religious uprising. The youngsters use guile to survive on the streets, encountering a pretty orphan girl called Latika (Freida Pinto) who will change their lives forever. As months and years pass, Salim

becomes a lackey to a brutal gang lord who forcibly takes Latika as his wife, beating her when she dares to challenge him. Unable to rescue the woman he loves from her predicament, Jamal seizes the opportunity to appear on a television quiz show. Miraculously, Jamal knows the answer to each question and as he edges closer and closer to the 20 million rupee final question, the young man stands on the precipice of a momentous leap of faith that could rescue Latika and finally drag him and Salim out of the gutter.

Guilty laughs galore Road trip romp SEX DRIVE (15)

ROLE MODELS (15)

Rating: 5/10

Rating: 7/10

THE latest foul-mouthed bro-mantic comedy cast in the Judd Apatow mould (Superbad, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express) is a genuinely funny escapade that milks every guffaw from its predictable fish-out-of-water scenario. Role Models doesn’t deviate once from a well-trodden path of breast gags, wanton stupidity and hard fought redemption but David Wain’s film has an undeniable charm and some terrific one-liners as it extols the virtues of fraternal love. The lively patter between

lead stars Paul Rudd, who cowrote the script, and Seann William Scott, as a pair of puerile 30-something degenerates forced to think like adults for once, wins us over. Inevitably, by becoming mentors to two troubled youths, these men behaving badly grow up and finally lead by example, proving that responsible adults aren’t afraid to don copious face make-up and tights in public. A guilty pleasure with plenty to snigger at.

BAKED to a similar recipe as American Pie, Sex Drive is a filthy-minded, teen comedy about a pair of best friends and their unexpected romantic detours during a road trip in search of physical satisfaction. One half of the central double-act is a reluctant virgin determined to pop his cherry before starting college, the other half a carefree purveyor of chatup lines, who is so laid

3

back, he is positively horizontal. Sex Drive is a lively jaunt through the back roads of the Midwest, creating numerous scrapes for the three youngsters as they chart a haphazard course to adulthood. Gags hit as frequently as they miss and despite Ian’s pursuit of thrills, the film ultimately hammers home a message about meaningful relationships to the target teen audience.

Bride Wars is based on the premise that every young girl holds dear an image of her dream wedding, which in the case of ‘best friends forever’ Liv (Hudson, who also produces) and Emma (Hathaway) is in New York’s Plaza Hotel in June. But when an administrative error by their wedding planner means they have to get married on the same day, the pair fall out in spectacular style and try to sabotage the other’s special day.

Coming soon Will Smith plays an IRS tax collector with a shocking secret in SEVEN POUNDS... a pampered pooch (voiced by Drew Barrymore) in the Disney family comedy BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA... Mickey Rourke plays a fading fighter in THE WRESTLER... and bloodshed in the eye-popping MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D.
