Pre-LAW Conference and Law Fair 2012

Welcome to the 8th Annual National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair 2012!

I

t has been both a tremendous battle and a blessing to make it to eight years, but my team and I have overcome the many challenges and obstacles that life presents in any worthwhile endeavor to press on and continue this important event. I have remained focused on the mission, continued to reason with both my head and my heart, and remember each day that this work is an obligation and a commitment to make things better for those who come behind us. I continue to believe that true success comes in giving back and paying it forward. With every thing given to us, we have an assignment to give and share our blessings with others - period. I am genuinely grateful for the consistent support of the law school and legal community and others so that we are able to provide this greatly-needed service to aspiring lawyers from across the country. I am so proud to present to you another truly world-class event. At this year’s conference, we will hear from some dynamic practitioners, thinkers and leaders. We are excited to welcome keynote speakers Carla D. Pratt, Professor of Law and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law, Sherry D. Williams, Senior Vice President and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer at Halliburton, Brian Nelson, Special Assistant Attorney General with the California Department of Justice, Leonard M. Baynes, Professor of Law and Director of The Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development at St. John’s University School of Law, Angela Rye, Executive Director and General Counsel for The Congressional Black Caucus, and Brian Tippens, Director of Compliance and Social Responsibility for Global Procurement at the Hewlett-Packard Company. Further, we have a host of amazing special guest speakers who you will be able to hear from including Demetris White Cheatham, Executive Director of the National Bar Association, Ronald C. Green, Controller of the City of Houston, Lisa M. Tatum, President-Elect of the State Bar of Texas, Deshonda Charles Tackett, President of the Houston Lawyers Association, Kendra Brown, National Chairperson of the National Black Law Students Association, C.E. Rhodes, President of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, Stanley Settle II, National Director of the National Black Law Students Association’s Pre-Law Division, and Bryan D. Snoddy, Chairperson of the African American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas. Moreover, we are deeply honored to be joined by our 2013 Legacy Builder Award recipients Judge Arthur L. Burnett Sr., Executive Director of the National African American Drug Policy Coalition and John Crump, Executive Director Emeritus of the National Bar Association. They will not only receive their awards but will graciously share their marvelous wisdom with our Legacy Builders Awards Banquet & Aspiring Lawyers Pinning Ceremony attendees. These men are very successful in their own right but are being celebrated not only because of what they have achieved but because they have sacrificially given to help others interested in becoming lawyers. They are both extremely deserving of this very special national public recognition. They are true living testaments that have embodied the ideal of “lifting as one climbs” throughout the course of their long careers and lives. www.blackprelawconference.com | 3

Pre-LAW Conference and Law Fair 2012

Not to mention, we have the core of the National Black Pre-Law Conference family – the numerous brilliant, knowledgeable, and caring law school administrators, lawyers, law professors, judges, and law students who year after year generously give of their time to be a part of this conference. They do it precisely because they want to share their experiences, insight, and advice with the next generation of Black lawyers. These are individuals who want to make the path a bit easier for those coming behind them and they are a wealth of experience and information. My hope and plan is that we can exceed your expectations and give you everything we can during each and every power-packed day of the conference. For the person who is serious about law school and hungry for good information, they will find that the small investment of their time and resources to get here has resulted in a treasure trove of priceless gifts. In addition to the abundant information through people and tangible, takeaway resources, the real gold in this event is the chance to make life-changing connections. I am a believer that even one person can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Each attendee will have several opportunities to meet so many different people not only informally, but through structured networking activities. This year, we want to really encourage and lead in the area of networking and making connections. We not only want to make sure you meet a lot of people, we want to give you the chance to really find people you click with, so that you can make meaningful and quality connections that can turn into life-long friendships, professional partnerships, and more. I implore you to not take any part of this event for granted. This is one of those experiences that can have a real and significant impact on your future and your life. Don’t sleep on it. Don’t assume you’ll get this chance again. You will never get to experience the eighth annual event again. There will be other events, but not this one. All of the different people that we are bringing together all in one place and all in this time will not happen again. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Treat it accordingly, and take full advantage of every opportunity presented. We have talked through, worked through and carefully considered hundreds of details because we really care about you and want you to walk away with a highly valuable and unforgettable experience. Now, it’s time to get the knowledge, make the connections, and become empowered! I sincerely believe that you have everything within you to be a highly competitive, strategic, and excellent law school applicant, law student, and lawyer. If you say you want to be a lawyer, then what you need is right here and you’re in the right place. It’s up to you now to make the most of every moment while you’re here, and decide to implement everything you have learned once you return home. Just know that we believe in you and know that with great sacrifice, an unstoppable work ethic, and a relentless attitude that you will do what it takes no matter what - you can achieve this and just about anything. I am confident you will make me and everyone involved with this conference proud. Do well - and then come back and give back. Continued blessings and success,

Greetings: On behalf of the National Bar Association (NBA), the nation’s oldest and largest association of African American lawyers and judges, I extend a warm greeting to the attendees of the 8th Annual National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair. As one of the nation’s premier information-sharing and networking conferences, this annual event showcases the mission of such organizations as the NBA to “grow lawyers” to serve the community and diversify the legal profession. The importance of maintaining this mission is exemplified through the active participation of our members who have mentored and been involved in seminars and workshops at this annual pre-law conference. Since our founding, the NBA has strived to expand the pipelines of opportunity for aspiring African American attorneys. We continue to work with the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) and Young Lawyers Division (YLD) to create networking events, mentoring and fellowship programs as well as providing grant opportunities. Additionally, our annual Crump Law Camp and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition provides pre-law and scholarship opportunities to high school students. These initiatives and the platform created by the Annual National Pre-Law Conference for aspiring attorneys is significant in ensuring that the legal profession continues to be diversified. With your help we will continue to build the pool of leaders, and future members of the NBA who will help us to maintain our rightful place in society as the voice for African American attorneys and judges within the legal profession. Thank you for your dedication to advancing the legal profession. Enjoy your conference! Sincerely,

Dear Friends: It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 8th Annual National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair. This event serves as an important forum for you to gain insightful knowledge from distinguished legal scholars, practitioners and administrators on how to navigate through law school and what it takes to succeed as an attorney. You will expand your understanding and appreciation of the rule of law, the value of public service, and the positive difference lawyers make in our society. Diversity on the bench and bar is very important, because a justice system that does not reflect the face of society corrodes a society’s faith in and connection to that system – threatening the rule of law. A fair justice system is sustained by a legal profession that represents the society it serves. America’s health and future depend on your enthusiasm and leadership. As you take the time to attend the activities and networking events, know that you have the very best wishes of the ABA and its leadership. Sincerely,

Laurel G. Bellows

November 2, 2012 To Future Black Legal Scholars and Current Champions of Justice: On behalf of the African American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas, it is my honor to welcome you to the 2012 National Black Pre-Law Conference & Law Fair. I encourage the young legal scholars to engage the many professionals and other future students of the law that you encounter throughout this conference. This is an excellent opportunity to network with successful lawyers and judges and additionally build alliances with individuals that shall soon be attorneys, judges and community leaders. It is no accident that many of this country’s leaders studied and completed a legal education. The law is a powerful weapon with which to forge new pathways of opportunity and create level playing fields. And for those warriors of justice from across this country participating in this year’s conference and continuing to fight the good fight, I commend your efforts and implore you to stay vigilant. While there have been many successes, the victory is not yet won. The injustices are too many and the realization of the dream is far too limited. We must soldier on in board rooms, court rooms, and communities throughout this great country shouldering the burden of the awesome responsibility that has been placed in our care. I hope that all attendees at this year’s conference are able to leave with valuable insights and inspiration. It is always a great privilege to participate in this annual program. We are distinctly pleased that you are taking time from your busy schedule to join us as we begin a new chapter and set about to do great things. Sincerely, Bryan D. CREATING A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR LAW SCHOOL SUCCESS Presented by Evangeline M. Mitchell, Esq., Ed.M. Description: Getting into law school is extremely competitive. Being good is not good enough. One of the reasons why many applicants don’t succeed in the tough selection process is due to a lack of proper planning and preparation, and not fully understanding how to stand apart from highly qualified competitors. In this session, you will leave with the tools you need to be successful in the law school application process and in life by learning how to create your own strategic action plan based on your unique talents, interests, and strengths, as well the resources available to you and the opportunities you create. You will gain valuable insight on how to set and achieve high goals whether you choose to pursue law school or another road altogether. The importance of strategic planning and timely execution is particularly important when you consider the downward trend in law school admission affecting African American applicants.

John Crump, JD, CMP, CAE Executive Director Emeritus of the National Bar Association (NBA), John Crump received his BA degree in 1967 and his Juris Doctor in 1970 from Texas Southern University, and embarked on a 30-year career of service to the bar and the legal profession. From the start, he distinguished himself as a visionary leader of the NBA, increasing its membership and helping it make an impact by lending monetary support to civil rights attorneys pursuing discrimination cases. Under Crump’s leadership, the NBA continued to be a powerhouse for civil rights. The American Bar Association (ABA) noted Crump’s contribution to the NBA and the legal profession, presenting him a Lifetime Achievement Award at its midyear meeting, February 6, 2010, “in recognition of outstanding service to the bar, the profession, and the ABA’s goal of eliminating bias and enhancing diversity.” A champion of diversity in the legal profession, Crump always believed that if America is to become a country of inclusion, the legal system must lead the way. To this end, he set out to find a way to motivate young students to seek careers in the legal profession. In 2001, he established the NBA Crump Law Camp to introduce 14-17 year olds in the 9th through 11th grades to the American judicial system. Housed at Howard University, the two-week residential program provides students a rigorous academic agenda, exposure to the courts, and lectures by top legal professionals in the nation’s capitol. The Crump Law Camp has become the centerpiece of the NBA’s effort to “grow lawyers of color” and a model for other bar associations. As a testament to Crump’s commitment to diversity, the Council on Legal Education Opportunity presented him the Diversity Pioneer Award on its 40th anniversary in 2008. Diversity & the Bar Magazine (January/February 2009) chronicled his NBA career and highlighted his contribution to the NBA’s development and character. Also citing his contribution to the NBA, the Washington Bar Association presented him its 2009 President’s Recognition Award. Recipient of numerous awards from civic, professional, and educational organizations throughout his career, Crump says that serving as NBA executive director for three decades was more than a job or title, it was a commitment. He is married to the former Edythe Traylor; they have one son, Jason. 86 | www.blackprelawconference.com
