AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORIC SITES IN HOUSTON Freedmen’s Town Historic District (Now Known as Houston’s Fourth Ward) Founded in 1866, Freedmen’s Town is the oldest African American district in the city. It is a place where emancipated slaves first settled in tents and shanties on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. Many of these people were skilled stone masons and carpenters. They built homes, businesses and brick churches. Freedmen’s Town was at one time the epicenter for the Black community in Houston. It was considered a thriving area for professionals, educators and business owners. However, during the Great Depression, many of the homeowners lost their property. In 1984, Freedmen’s Town was considered a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places. This area once had over 530 historic structures when it received its historic designation, but now there are only 30 remaining. Jack Yates House Rev. John Henry “Jack” Yates (18281897) was prominent in Houston’s African American community during his lifetime. He organized the Old Land Mark Association, the first Baptist association for Blacks in Houston, organized Houston Academy, a school for Black children, and helped establish Bishop College, the first Baptist college in Texas. He also founded and preached at several local churches, including the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. In 1926, Jack Yates High School was named in his honor. Eldorado Ballroom The Eldorado Ballroom in its heyday.

Throughout the mid-1900s, the Eldorado Ballroom, was considered as one of the finest showcases in Texas for the live performance of blues, jazz and R&B, and occasionally pop and zydeco. It was owned and operated by African Americans in the historic Third Ward, which was then the home of the largest Black population in

Houston Negro Hospital, now Riverside General Hospital Houston Negro Hospital

Riverside General Hospital The Houston Negro Hospital, now known as Riverside General Hospital, was founded in 1927. A group of Black doctors petitioned that a hospital be opened in the Third Ward in order to serve patients who would not be treated anywhere else because of financial or racial barriers. This hospital was the first non-profit hospital for African American patients in Houston. It was staffed with all Black physicians and had an all-Black board of directors. Its advisory council was made up of

white citizens, many were among some of the most prominent. The original structures of the hospital were allocated as historical sites. The new and current building, completed in 1961, was re-named Riverside General Hospital. Source: https://tshaonline.org Location: 3204 Ennis Street Houston, Texas 77004

Independence Heights Independence Heights was established around 1908 as a new community for middle-class Blacks. It was incorporated on January 25, 1915 with a population of 600, and considered the first incorporated “Black city” in the state of Texas. Churches organized in the city included New Hope Missionary Baptist, the Green Chapel African Methodist Episcopal, the St. Paul Colored Methodist Episcopal, the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal, the Concord Missionary Baptist, and the North Main Church of God in Christ. In the late 1920s, there were numerous black-owned businesses in the city including a cooperative store, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, contractors, a lumber company, a watch repair shop, ice cream parlors, a cleaning and pressing shop, a drug store, a black smith shop, law offices and an electrical shop. In 1928, residents voted to dissolve the incorporation in order to become a part of the city of Houston and the city was annexed to Houston the next year. In 1989, a Texas Historical Commission marker was placed on the grounds of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, to mark the area as a historic site. ROOMMATE MATCHES ONE WAY TO CUT HOTEL COSTS IS BY HAVING A ROOMMATE. ALTHOUGH WE ARE UNABLE TO MATCH ROOMMATES, WE CAN HELP FACILITATE YOUR FINDING ONE.

We have added you to a special group through a project management platform called basecamp, which will enable you to stay connected with the conference organizer and fellow registrants. So make certain that you utilize it! Get engaged and get to know registrants before the actual event! Feel free to post messages requesting roommates and put out a call where you state your gender, age, personality, and smoking preferences. Remember: Other registrants are interested in cutting costs and finding a roommate too!

Should I require emergency medical treatment as a result of accident or illness arising during my attendance and participation in the NBPLC, I consent to such treatment. I acknowledge and I agree to be financially responsible for any medical or legal bills that may be incurred as a result of emergency medical treatment. I will notify the NBPLC verbally and in writing if I am at any time injured prior to, during, or after the NBPLC in my travels or attendance, or if I have medical conditions about which emergency medical personnel should be informed. However, I understand that the NBPLC and National Pre-Law Diversity Initiatives, Inc. is not legally obligated to act on that information in any way or to provide any medical service whatsoever to me.
