The Hunger Games Costume Auction with Prices Realized

T

o say The Hunger Games is a hit movie is a gross understatement. It is, in fact, the third highest grossing movie ($408,010,692) in the United States in 2012, trailing only Marvel’s The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. The sequel, Catching Fire, is poised to be one of the biggest films of 2013. There are many reasons for the success of The Hunger Games (Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, obviously, is one reason). But one area that is not given enough credit is the costume design. The epic storyline, set in the future with distinct and disparate cultures and values, requires imaginative costumes to help set the movie’s visual mood and tone. From the various Districts to Capitol City, from the Reaping scenes to the Arena battles, the costumes serve as geographic markers as well as benchmarks of character development. In the case of Katniss and Peeta, their costumes followed in lockstep with their personal evolution. Taking a literary franchise that has a large following and developing it into a cinematic hit requires talented filmmakers. However, bringing Suzanne Collins’s unique futuristic vision to life with exploding colors and brimming vitality is a testament to the talents of award-winning costume designer, Judianna Makovsky. Her work was nothing short of art. The costumes were thoughtful and meticulous, while maintaining functionality and esthetics. Ms. Makovsky expertly bridged one artform (novel) to another (film). With a collective eight decades of experience in dealing with Hollywood memorabilia and collectibles shared between my partners and myself, we can truly say that the screen-worn costumes from The Hunger Games are some of the best constructed costumes we have ever seen. The fans deserve to see what we are lucky enough to work with in the past year in putting this auction together. Each lot will come with a special Blacksparrow Certificate of Authenticity. I want to thank the people that made this auction possible: Jim Tyson, for championing our cause from day one, and Judianna Makovsky, for her beautiful body of work. I want to acknowledge the people who worked tirelessly on this project in one form or another: Erica Enders, for her artistry; Kathryn Wyatt, for her cheerfulness and industriousness; David Gwennap, for capturing the beauty of these costumes with the camera; FiDM, for working with us to display key costumes at its 19th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibit; The Costume Designers Guild, for including us in this year’s 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards ceremony, where Ms. Makovsky was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award; Lennard Billin and our friends at ScreenUsed, for their unwavering support. Last, but not least, I would like to thank The Hunger Games fans--some who drove from other states--for coming out to see our exhibits this past year. Your smiles and delight at seeing the costumes on display made our jobs extremely satisfying. We hope you all enjoy the following pages, on which the costumes are laid out in chronological order, according to their appearance in the film. We wanted to recreate the magic of The Hunger Games by assembling a book that can serve as a tribute to the art of costume design. We hope you like it. Sincerely, Fong Sam President Blacksparrow Auctions

the hunger games BLACKSPARROW AUCTIONS TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE BY EITHER REGISTERING TO BID OR PLACING A BID, THE BIDDER ACCEPTS THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS OF SALE AND ENTERS INTO A LEGALLY, BINDING, ENFORCEABLE AGREEMENT WITH BLACKSPARROW AUCTIONS (“BLACKSPARROW”). Bidder and Blacksparrow agree that any agreements between the Bidder and Blacksparrow, including but not limited to these Conditions of Sale, are entered into in Los Angeles County, California, which is where the agreements are to be performed and the auction to take place, no matter where Bidder is situated and no matter by what means or where Bidder was informed of the auction and regardless of whether catalogs, materials, or other communications were received by Bidder in another location. Both Blacksparrow and the Bidder agree that any disputes under these Conditions of Sale, the subject matter hereof, the entering into, or any aspect of the auction, shall be exclusively governed by California law, and that any and all claims or actions shall be brought and maintained only in Los Angeles County, California in a State or Federal Court to the exclusion of any other venue, locale or jurisdiction. All parties submit to such jurisdiction. 1. Starting Bids: In addition to descriptive information, each entry in the catalog includes a starting bid, which is the price that starts the bidding for the item. The value of a collectible is highly subjective, despite any reference to prices recently paid at auction for comparable items. Any auction will have its own set of variables, including, but not limited to, condition, rarity, quality, history and provenance. Therefore Blacksparrow has chosen to forgo using estimates and elects to let collectors determine the selling price. Starting bids are prepared well in advance of the sale and subject to revision. Starting bids do not include the buyer’s premium or sales tax. 2. Reserves: On some occasions, although not often, an item may have a reserve. The reserve is the minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot will not be sold. 3. Buyer’s Premium and Sales Tax: The actual purchase price will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium of 20% of the hammer price. Hammer price is the final bid amount called out by the auctioneer when the gavel, proverbial or otherwise, comes down. California sales tax shall automatically be added to the purchase price for CA residents, unless exempted. 4. Advance Inquiries: Bidders are encouraged to send inquiries pertaining to the auction, as a whole and/or individual lot. You may also request condition reports. Blacksparrow strongly urges the bidder to resolve any questions PRIOR TO BIDDING. 5. Bidding: Property is auctioned in consecutive numerical order, as it appears in the catalog. Blacksparrow shall determine all opening bids and bidding increments. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the salesroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone, Internet or by written bid left with Blacksparrow in advance of the auction. The auctioneer has the absolute discretionary right to reject any bid in the event of dispute between bidders or if the auctioneer has doubt as to the validity of any bid, to advance the bidding and to determine the successful bidder in the event of a dispute between bidders, to continue the bidding or to reoffer and resell the lot in question. In the event of a dispute after the sale, Blacksparrow’s record of final sale shall be conclusive. 6. Internet Bids: Blacksparrow is pleased to provide online bidding in real-time. However, Blacksparrow is not and cannot be responsible or liable for any problems, delays, or any other issues or problems resulting from use of the Internet generally or specifically, including but not limited to transmission, execution or processing of bids. On some occasions beyond the control of Blacksparrow, the bidding software or the Internet itself may not physically keep up with the pace of the auction. In order to help avoid disappointment, Blacksparrow recommends placing a realistic absentee bid as early as possible. 7. Successful Bids: The proverbial fall of the auctioneer’s hammer indicates the final bid. Blacksparrow will record the paddle number of the buyer. Winning bidders shall be notified with an invoice within 48 hours after the conclusion of the auction. 8. Payment: Payment is expected in full within 7 calendar days of the sale, or within 5 calendar days of the invoice date, whichever is later. Acceptable methods of payment include cash, personal check, cashiers check, money order, credit card (VISA, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX), bank transfer, and PayPal.
