Six decades after The I Love Lucy Show debuted, Lucille Ball’s legacy lives on in not just syndication, but also in the influences she exerted in entertainment and popular culture. From saving Star Trek to crafting a model for future sitcoms, Lucy was a true renaissance woman. In addition to being a gifted entertainer, Lucille Ball was also a marketing genius and formidable businesswoman. She brilliantly leverage the popularity of I Love Lucy and parlayed it into multiple lines of merchandising, including apparel, toys, dolls and novelty items. 20. Set of 4 Oversize Gallery Photos of Lucille Ball. Set of four (4) black and white 11” x 14” matte photos of Lucille Ball in various roles. One of the photos is a still of Lucille Ball as Charlie Chaplin from The Lucy Show episode, “Chris’s New Year’s Eve Party,” originally aired December 31st, 1962. Lucy does her infamous Charlie Chaplin skit to entertain her daughter Chris’s friends at a New Year’s Eve party. Another photo is a still from I Love Lucy episode “The Operetta”, originally aired October 13, 1952. She adored how make-up artist Hal King made her up to play Camille, the snaggletoothed Queen of the Gypsies -- and for the rest of her days, she would use this image as her headshot. 23. Pair of Oversize Caricature Art Prints of Lucille Ball from Her Production Office. One caricature is a large 16” x 20” Eastman dye transfer print of a Ronald Searle portrait of Lucille Ball that was used by TV Guide. The print is date stamped April 30, 1966 on the back. The other caricature is an original artwork accomplished in gouache on 17” x 22” artist paper, depicting Lucille Ball and Danny Kaye as jack-in-the-boxes. Also matted. Original script for Personal Column (Hunt Stromberg Productions, 1947), starring George Sanders, Lucille Ball, Charles Coburn, and Boris Karloff. The film was originally titled “Lured,” but the title was changed to Personal Column midway through the original U.S. theatrical release because staff at the Production Code Administration thought the word “lured” sounded too much like “lurid. “ 153 pages, tack-bound. Includes 7 page shooting schedule, incomplete. Also includes pages 33-37 of the script, stapled on top left corner and a paper clipped small white sheet of paper handwritten, “E. Jenssen,” a costume designer, who has designed many costumes for Lucille Ball for various films. Script has wear and tear from usage and age. Overall, still in good condition. Starting at $100

On the blue front cover, upper right corner is handwritten “Revised for Hal Collins” and stamped “Completed” in blue ink. The first page is a letter insert to Howard McClay of Lucille Ball Productions from Teddi O’Shea, Manager of Program Coordination for CBS Television Network, dated August 11, 1977, in regards to the program format. 40. Lucille Ball Handwritten Note to Costume Designer Edith Head. Lucille Ball handwritten note to Edith Head, asking her to be designer on a TV special co-starring Bob Hope. Written on a sheet of orange notebook paper, 9” x 11.” In full: “Edith, I saw that work you had for us earlier [sic] Edith -- I have to have you for a show Bob Hope and I are doing in 64 -One hour special – ‘Mr & Mrs TV show’ [sic] Please look for a note asking for your skill for this [sic] ‘Wishing’ -- Love Lucy Ball.” This TV special was based on a Sherwood Schwartz play, and aired on April 19, 1964. The hour-long special had Lucy portraying a fictional woman television studio boss who wants Hope to star in a TV show about the perfect married couple. The letter has some toning. Otherwise, the writing remains legible. In very good condition. Starting at $500

41. Doris Day Typed Letter Signed to Lucille Ball. Typed letter signed, dated March 19, 1971, on Doris Day personal letterhead stationery. Written by Doris Day to Lucille Ball. The letter reads: “Dear, Dear Lucy: It made me so happy that you enjoyed my special and it made me even happier that you told me so. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness and again, thank you for taking the time. Hope to see you soon. Love, Doris.” The two friends shared a love for animals and had joined forces in the early 1970’s to raise money to save stray animals from the shelters. The letter measures 7. 25” x 10.5”. Glue residue on the back is visible from the front (the letter was previously mounted and framed). Otherwise, in good condition. Starting at $25

Written to Ellen Reed thanking her for the thoughtful holiday gift. Signed in blue ink, “Lucy.” Includes original transmittal envelope, postmarked February 11, 1982. 44. Lucille Ball Typed Letter Signed on Personal “Lucy” Letterhead Stationery. Typed letter signed on personal letterhead stationery, one page, circa 1986. Written to David, in reply to fan request for autograph and pictures. Signed in black pen, “Lucy.” Horizontal fold line at the center. In fine condition. Starting at $50 45. Barbara Walters Handwritten Note to Lucille Ball & Gary Morton. Handwritten note on from Barbara Walters to Lucille Ball and Gary Morton. Note reads: “Dear Lucy and Gary -- I just viewed the interview and it’s splendid. We look beautiful and happy and you are wonderful. Thank you for the pleasure of meeting you, your kindness and cooperation. And looking at your marriage - you give me hope! With affection - Barbara October 24.” Written on Barbara Walters’s personal stationery card. Lucy subsequently wrote Eva Gabor’s telephone number over the note. The card measures 6.5” x 4” The aforementioned interview aired on December 6, 1977. In fine condition. Starting at $100

46. Thank You Letter to Lucille Ball from Head of RKO Drama Dept. Lela Rogers. Typed letter signed, one page, 8” x 11”, on RKO Studios Inc. letterhead stationery, dated January 23, 1936, from Lela Rogers (mother of Ginger Rogers). Rogers, assistant to Charles Kerner, Vice-President in charge of production at RKO studios, was put in charge of the studio’s new talent. This letter was written to thank Lucille Ball for a stage performance she had participated in. Rogers writes, in part: “I want you to know that any time I can be of service to you in any way within my power please feel free to call upon me, as I felt free to call upon you.” Signed at the closing, “Lela E Rogers.” Letter retains original transmittal folds and has a 2” tear in the RKO logo. 47. Lucille Ball Signed Tintair Advertising Release Contract. One page typed letter release for a Tintair advertising campaign. Signed by Lucille Ball, along with a witness and dated August 30, 1950. Includes Letter from Julie Alberti from Endorsements, Inc. dated Sept. 15, 1950 in regards to the release. Also includes a vintage magazine cut out of a Tintair ad. In fine condition. 48. Desi Arnaz Signed Contract for Purchase of RKO Studios Film Library. Original signed 9-page (with duplicate first page) contract, on 8.5” x 13” onionskin paper, hand-dated December 11, 1957, for the sale of RKO Studios Film Library. This purchase helped cement Desi Arnaz as one of the biggest wheelers and dealers in early television history. In addition to being the businessman behind the success of the “Lucy” franchise and Desilu Studios, Arnaz is credited with innovating the sitcom medium, with much of his ideas still being employed to this day. The contract reads, in part: “Subject to all the terms and conditions hereinafter set forth, RKO hereby sells, assigns, transfers and sets over unto DESILU all of its right, title and interest in and to RKO’s so-called ‘stock film library’, ‘library of process shots’, ‘music stock library’, and, ‘sound effects library’.” Signed on Page 9 by RKO’s Daniel O’Shea and Desi Arnaz representing Desilu Productions, with Desilu embossed sealed at the bottom of the page. Vintage 1950’s unopened carton of ten packs of Philip Morris cigarettes with a Holiday theme featuring Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball and Johnny the bellboy. Philip Morris was an instrumental early sponsor of the I Love Lucy Show. Without Philip Morris, who took a gamble on a show with an interracial couple, I Love Lucy might arguably not have been made. Understandably Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz maintained a very close relationship with the tobacco company, punctuated by Philip Morris’s unwavering support for Lucy when she was accused of being a Communist in 1953. Lucy never forgot the support she received from Philip Morris. The carton of cigarettes is accompanied by a vintage advertising display for Father’s Day.
