Stephen King has said of Meg Gardiner: “This woman is as good as Michael Connelly… her novels are, simply put, the finest crime-suspense series I’ve come across in the last twenty years.” Gardiner was also recently elected President of the Mystery Writers of America for 2019. The Dark Corners of the Night will be the third novel in her Barry Award-winning UNSUB series, which received three starred reviews from the major trade publications and was sold to CBS Television.

I am the legion of the night … He appears in the darkness like a ghost, made of shadows and fear—the Midnight Man. He comes for the parents but leaves the children alive, tiny witnesses to unspeakable horror. The bedroom communities of Los Angeles are gripped with dread, and the attacks are escalating. Still reeling from her best friend’s close call in a bombing six months ago, FBI behavioral analyst Caitlin Hendrix has come to Los Angeles to assist in the Midnight Man investigation and do what she does best—hunt a serial killer. Her work is what keeps her going, but something about this UNSUB—unknown subject—doesn’t sit right. She soon realizes that this case will test not only her skills but also her dedication, for within the heart of a killer lives a secret that mirrors Caitlin’s own past. Hesitancy is not an option, but will she be able to do what must be done if the time comes? Tense and impactful, Edgar AwardTM winner Meg Gardiner’s latest UNSUB thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat until its riveting conclusion. PALE

“Some things just don’t keep well inside this house …”

The summer of 1966 burned hot across America but nowhere hotter than the cotton fields of Mississippi. Finding herself in a precarious position as a black woman living alone, Bernice accepts her brother Floyd’s invitation to join him as a servant for a white family and she enters the web of hostility and deception that is the Kern plantation household. The secrets of the house are plentiful yet the silence suddenly breaks with the arrival of the harvest and the appearance of Jesse and Fletcher. These two brothers, the sons of the house servant Silva, awaken a vengeful seed within the Misses of the house as she plots to punish not only her husband but Silva’s family as well. Bernice walks the fine line between emissary and accomplice, as she tries her best to draw secrets from the Misses’ heart, while using their closeness to protect the lives of the people around her. With a dazzling voice and rich emotional tension, Pale explores the ties that bind and how quickly humanity can fade and return us to primal ways.

BLOCK SEVENTEEN Block Seventeen is an immersive and haunting debut novel that examines the trauma of inheritance in surprising ways. Akiko, who prefers to be called Jane, cannot locate her mother, at least not physically. An intruder burgles Jane’s apartment but takes nothing, leaving behind only small piles of household items. Jane’s fiancé, Shiro, foolishly plots to expose his employer, the TSA. And the super refuses to fix the broken heater in their apartment. Jane tolerates this underwhelming present until a cry from the past robs her of all peace. Jane’s uncle was named Akiko, too. He died as an infant in an internment camp for Japanese Americans in Alabama. It is a namesake Jane has rejected her entire adult life. But, as Jane searches for her mother, she learns more about her mother’s childhood, her grandmother, her family’s fortunes before and after internment. She learns how fear and humiliation can drive a person to commit desperate acts.

Soon to be an FX Limited Series!

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed. Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, Shogun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but also one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, Shogun is, as the New York Times put it, “…not only something you read—you live it.” Provocative, absorbing, and endlessly fascinating, there is only one: Shogun.

ASIAN SAGA

Summer 2019

Beginning in feudal Japan and carrying through China, Hong Kong, Iran, and on into the late twentieth century, James Clavell’s Asian Saga is the iconic series that traces the coming together of East and West, and the power of free will to carve destinies. Woven throughout this epic chronicle is the story of the Struan family and the Asian trading empire they built from humble beginnings to become an international consortium. Struan descendants interlace their way through the novels, creating a rich and varied landscape through which the momentous events of history become personal. The master of historical fiction artfully twists love and war, trust and betrayal, and the shared human condition into a complex web of intermingled narratives that span across both time and continents. Meticulously researched and utterly absorbing, Clavell’s timeless Asian Saga novels have been embraced by a generation of readers and are now ready to be discovered by the next.

Blackstone Publishing looks forward to seeing you at the key trade and consumer book and library shows throughout the year. We’ll be exhibiting and showcasing our authors at the regional fall Independent Bookseller shows, Winter Institute, PLA, ALA Midwinter, ALA Annual, BookExpo, BookCon, and more. Be sure to stop by or set up to meet with our team, learn about our forthcoming books, and connect with our authors.

Our Story In 1987, in a small garage in southern Oregon, Blackstone was born. Founded by Craig and Michelle Black, the early days consisted of a small number of family members and employees working out of the Blacks’ home, building the business one cassette tape at a time. With a fresh perspective on the reading experience, Craig and Michelle, along with their trusted team, found new and innovative methods to not only produce and distribute audiobooks but also pioneer creative ways to collaborate with publishers, booksellers, and the audiobook listening community. Today we have over 14,750 audiobooks in our catalog and publish over 1,500 audiobooks a year. On the foundation of this thirty-plus-year enterprise, we launched a print and e-book venture in 2015. In that first year, we published just a handful of titles. In 2020, we will publish over eighty titles, and our list of projects continues to grow. We’re thrilled to be working with bestselling and award-winning authors like Meg Gardiner, Steve Hamilton, Reed Farrel Coleman, Catherine Ryan Howard, P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast, Don Winslow, Adrian McKinty, Cory Doctorow, Shelley Shepard Gray, Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Orson Scott Card, Matthew Mather, and Charlie Lovett, as well as debuting new talented voices like Cadwell Turnbull, Coco Ma, Jill Criswell, and Jennifer Givhan. As we continue to build the audiobook business and grow the print venture, Blackstone has strengthened its sales, marketing, production, library, and editorial teams, as well as increased its presence at BookExpo, BookCon, ALA, regional library conferences, and independent bookseller trade shows. Our overall goal is to publish groundbreaking books, both fiction and nonfiction, by the most talented writers, and to forge long-term connections with readers, booksellers, librarians, and the overall publishing community. We are committed to bringing entertaining and thought-provoking stories to as many people as possible in the most creative and innovative ways imaginable.
