Blackstone Publishing Fall 2020. The season many in our industry have fretted over for so long, and eyed with dread, is upon us. The gnawing question: Will readers be so swept up by the waves of breaking news this fall that they will stop reading and buying new books? In answer to this, we choose to place our trust in the belief that in these months of stormy, divisive political drama, a good book will be the perfect way to let in sanity and light. A good book can also unite us. In our Fall catalog, we offer a stunning collection of diverse, must-have fiction and nonfiction. We are proud of how much our list has grown this year, and we are excited to bring readers new releases from best-selling, award-winning authors, as well as works from notable, debut voices. If you are looking for a back-to-school season read, filled with hope and inspiration, Flying Free by Cecilia Aragon, is a memoir of how a bullied young daughter of immigrants overcame obstacles by combining math and logic with her passion for flying to become the first Latina pilot on the US Aerobatic Team. If escaping into an exhilarating thriller is the balm you seek, we have an exceptional offering of new mystery and suspense releases that will capture your undivided attention, among them New York Times bestselling author Brian Freeman’s riveting new Jonathan Stride novel Funeral for a Friend, James S. Murray (Impractical Jokers) and Darren Wearmouth’s spine-tingling Don’t Move, Edgar Award-finalist and Catherine Ryan Howard’s highly-anticipated, brilliant work of crime fiction, The Nothing Man, and many more. Discover fresh, new debut favorites this fall with Rudy Ruiz, author of The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, which Blackstone will publish in both Spanish and English editions simultaneously; Leila Rafei, author of Spring, a novel set during the 2011 Arab Spring in Cairo; and Ehsaneh Sadr, author of A Door Between Us, a gripping work of fiction centered around a wedding in Iran amid the highly controversial 2009 Iranian election. We have some terrific young adult fiction offerings this Fall too, including #1 New York Times bestselling author Kristin Cast’s Key to Fear, the first book in a new series, which imagines a future society consumed by fear of a deadly plague, touch is forbidden, and laws are made and enforced by the Key Corporation. We’re also proud to release new young adult fantasy novels in Jill Criswell’s Frozen Saga series and Coco Ma’s Shadow Frost trilogy, plus a remarkable new YA historical fiction novel, Nemesis and the Swan, by Lindsay K. Bandy, which captures an aristocratic nineteen-year-old girl’s fate during the French Revolution. Blackstone will continue our tradition of publishing outstanding adult historical fiction as well, transporting readers to Ancient Rome, bustling Gilded-Age New York City, treacherous colonial Jamestown, glittering Jazz-Age Paris, with new novels including Escaping Dreamland by New York Times bestselling author Charlie Lovett, Etiquette for Runaways by Liza Nash Taylor, Spindle City by Jotham Burrello, Brides of Rome by Debra May Macleod, and The Brief and True Report of Temperance Flowerdew by Denise Heinze. The Blackstone team looks forward to seeing you soon at the upcoming bookseller and library trade shows. We would love to tell you more about our impressive list of new books that will provide entertainment, respite, and inspiration, as needed, to readers this Fall.

Our Story In 1987, in a small garage in southern Oregon, Blackstone was born. With a fresh perspective on the reading experience, founders Craig and Michelle Black, and their trusted team, found new and innovative methods to not only produce and distribute audiobooks but also pioneer creative ways to collaborate with publishers, booksellers, and the audiobook listening community. Today we have over 14,750 audiobooks in our catalog and publish over 1,500 audiobooks a year. On the foundation of this thirty-plus year enterprise, we launched a print and e-book venture in 2015. In that first year, we published a handful of titles. In 2020, we will publish over eighty titles, and our list of projects continues to grow. This year also marks the opening of Blackstone Publishing’s New York City office, located in the Film Center Building, in Hell’s Kitchen. We’re thrilled to be working with bestselling and award-winning authors like Joe Kenda, James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth, Meg Gardiner, Eric Rickstad, Steve Hamilton, Reed Farrel Coleman, Catherine Ryan Howard, P.C. and Kristin Cast, Don Winslow, Adrian McKinty, Brian Freeman, and Charlie Lovett, as well as launching new, talented debut voices like Rudy Ruiz, Emily Adrian, Ehsaneh Sadr, Jotham Burrello, and Leila Rafei. As we continue to build the audiobook business and grow the print venture, Blackstone has strengthened its sales, marketing, production, library, and editorial teams, as well as increased its presence at BookExpo, BookCon, ALA, regional library conferences, and independent bookseller trade shows. Our goal is to publish groundbreaking books, both fiction and nonfiction, by the most talented writers and to forge long-term connections with readers, booksellers, librarians, and the overall publishing community. We are committed to bringing entertaining and thought-provoking stories to as many people as possible in the most creative and innovative ways imaginable.

After a fght with her partner, she puts the baby in the car and drives from Queens to her hometown in rural Ohio, where she shows up unannounced on the doorstep of her estranged childhood best friend. Amanda thought that she had left Carrie frmly in the past. After their friendship ended, their lives diverged radically: Carrie had a baby the summer after high school, became a successful tattoo artist, and never escaped Ohio2s conservative grid of close-cut grass. But the trauma of childbirth and shock of motherhood compel Amanda to go back to the beginning and to trace the tangled roots of friendship and family in her own life. Compelling and engaging, Everything Here Is under Control is a raw, honest, occasionally hilarious portrait of the comple0ity, con8icting emotions, and physical trauma of both modern motherhood and the intense, intimate friendships that women forge in their youth. Three stories. One revolution. Eighteen days in Egypt. Sami is no revolutionary. When the Arab Spring breaks out in 2011, he’s busy nishing school in Cairo and hiding his relationship with an American woman from his conservative mother, Suad. It’s a task that’s becoming impossible as events take a catastrophic turn. But Suad won’t be fooled—her son has been distant and she knows it’s not about politics. Far away in the Nile Delta, she spends her days tending obsessively to her lemon grove, which is quickly becoming her last vestige of control. The only child who remains by her side is her daughter, but as she, too, gets involved with the protests, Suad realizes it won’t last for long. There’s one person who knows exactly what’s going on in the family, and she wishes she didn’t. The maid, Jamila, already has too much to worry about as a refugee who’s lobbying for resettlement, expecting a baby, and looking for her missing husband. All she wants is stability, and that her dreams won’t be thwarted by the unrest sweeping a city she doesn’t belong to—a city that doesn’t even want her there. As the country revolts against the regime it has always known, Jamila, Sami, and Suad nd themselves caught in the whirlwind as they examine their own life choices and, in some cases, deal with the inevitable heartbreak that follows when revolution is not always what it seems. LEILA RAFEI grew up in the Washington, DC area and lives in New York. Spring is her rst novel.

Weddings always have their fair share of drama, but this one comes on the heels of the highly controversial 2009 Iranian election and ensuing Green Wave protests. When the matriarch of Sarah’s family arranged her marriage to Ali, it was with the intention of uniting two compatible families. However, as the 2009 election becomes contentious, political dierences emerge and Sarah’s conservative family tries to call o the wedding. Sarah and Ali, however, have fallen in love and, against the wishes of their parents, insist on going through with the marriage. Sarah’s cousin, Sadegh, is a staunch supporter of the government and a member of the Baseej, the volunteer militia tasked with arresting protestors and shutting down speech against the regime. Meanwhile, Ali’s sister, Azar, is an activist, a divorce attorney, and a passionate Green Wave supporter, trying to enact change in a way that many Iranians see as in;ammatory. When Sarah impulsively shelters a protestor in their car on the drive home from her wedding, she sets o a chain of events that can either unmask the government’s brutality or ruin them all. Sarah, Sadegh, and Azar’s stories weave together in an un;inching, humorous, and at times terrifying story that demonstrates that, even as the world is falling apart around us, life goes on. EHSANEH SADR is an Iranian American novelist and social justice activist with a PhD in international relations. She has worked, in various capacities, on campaigns related to biking advocacy, Palestinian human rights, Iranian sanctions, access to credit for rural villagers, and safe spaces for children in crisis. Determined to help her amnesiac patients recover their lives, Boston psychiatrist Cristina Silva is achieving near-miraculous results by prescribing ecognate, a revolutionary new memory-recovery drug now in trials. She understands her patients’ suering better than most, because she’s lost her memories, too. Desperate to become herself again, she pops the same experimental drug she prescribes to her patients. And, like them, she remembers a little more each day. Until one of her patients, a successful accountant, jumps from an eight-story window to his death. And as Cristina’s memories return, with them come violent visions and an incessant voice in her head. Maybe the drug isn’t safe after all. But discontinuing it would mean forgetting everything she’s recalled and losing herself. Then an enigmatic, possibly dangerous man appears at Cristina’s bus stop. He seems to know more about her life than she does and says she holds a secret that puts her life in danger. Perilously balanced between an unknown past and a terrifying future, if she wants to survive, Cristina must stay on the medication and unlock those memories before it’s too late—even if the adverse eects of the drug could destroy her. “An incisive and incandescent portrait0 alling to mind the work of ichard ord and enis Johnson, The Mighty Oak hits the reader like a hockey stick to the face.

— avid Burr errard, author of The Epiphany Machine

Tim O’Connor is paid to be violent. He plays for the El Paso Storm in the West Texas Hockey League. People call him Oak. He’s been an enforcer for longer than his hip or shoulder or back have been able to hold together. He is a broken machine of gristle and rage. And he has been away from home for too long. He’s called back to Boston by his mother’s death. There he confronts a life he failed to live, a daughter he doesn’t know, and a body that is quickly breaking down. Still, he can’t conceive of a future without hockey, even as he chews oxycodone and Adderall to numb his injuries and steady his brain. When a brutal encounter with the police places him in the path of Joan Linney, a haunted public defender, and Kip, a boy with a brave face, Oak and his chance companions roam cold streets from Castle Island to uincy Point, struggling to believe in a dierent future. In spare, potent language, Je W. Bens builds a remarkable character from the skates up. The Mighty a is a visceral and emotional experience. The fact of Oak’s physical existence is powerfully rendered, and the bone9deep transformation of his character is one you will not soon forget.

Jubilee, who Bianca feeds and clothes and bathes and loves. Jubilee, who Bianca could not leave behind. Jubilee, a doll in her arms. Told in alternating points of view, Jubilee reveals both the haunting power of our lived experiences and the surreal possibility of the present to heal the past. The vrst thread, 4Before Jubilee,5 follows Bianca in her girlhood home on the Mexicali border as she struggles with her high school sweetheart, Gabe, and a secret they’ve shared since she was vfteen. The second thread, 4With Jubilee,5 is told from the point of view of her new love, Joshua, who along with Bianca’s family helps her cope with a mysterious trauma by accepting Jubilee as part of the family. As Joshua’s love for Bianca grows, he fears that Jubilee has the power to tear his tiny family apart. Alternating chapters give readers a unique perspective on Bianca’s present and on her relationship with Jubilee as her past life with Gabe comes to a catastrophic end.
