Cast your mind back almost half a century to 1968 and that is the birth year of this popular annual event. Originally started by a group of friends with a love of offroad motorcycling, they decided to build a race track 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada. The Monster Energy Mammoth Motocross has been a hit ever since and the hills come alive with the hum of bikes making their way around the course.

H I T T H E TRA I L Next up is the essential journey to Devil’s Postpile and Rainbow Falls beyond. The Postpile is a natural monument that was formed by a lava eruption hundreds of thousands of years ago; however it wasn’t until about 10,000 years ago that the famous columns of rock we see today were uncovered by the flowing glaciers. It’s a great example of nature’s power and beauty. From the Postpile it’s a 2.5 mile flat hike down to Rainbow Falls, and, as you’ve probably guessed, the hike will eventually end up at a waterfall with mists that are often coloured with rainbows (hence the name). It’s a view that’s well worth the walk, and you might just find a pot of gold at the end… If you want to give your legs a break, then you can hop on a shuttle bus back to the start of the hike. From here, you can catch a gondola up to the Top of California, which is the peak of Mammoth Mountain. You’ll be zipped up to the lofty heights of 11,093 feet in just 8 minutes – and while the ride alone is lots of fun, the views at the top are incredible. After a morning in the fresh mountain air, treat yourself to an afternoon at the tasting room of the local Mammoth Brewing Company and the Eatery. This institution has been producing awardwinning beers for 20 years and offers an abundance of fantastic brews for beer-lovers. Their Paranoids Pale Ale and Epic IPA are particular favourites of ours, but stay long enough and you’ll get to try them all.

culinar high l igh When the inevitable hunger strikes during your stay (especially after all those outdoor activities) you can find all sorts of mouth-watering options in Mammoth Lakes. So to help you spend less time planning and more time enjoying your trip, we’ve created an insider guide to some of the top dining spots. From sun-drenched, lake-side restaurants to traditional American diners, you hungry bunch are in for a treat.

M A M M OT H RO C K N BO W L BRASSER I E Boasting one of the best views in town, this new brasserie restaurant is located above a well-known and state-of-the-art bowling alley (perfect for some pre or post-dinner activity), and features a beautiful outdoor decking area where you can soak up the sun by day. If you’re looking for something a little special, book the private chef’s room just off the main restaurant, where you can feast on a tailored menu of highlights, such as wild mushroom strudel or elk medallions.

LAKEFRONT RESTAURANT Perched on the edge of Twin Lakes, this restaurant is the ultimate in lakeside dining and has breath-taking views– especially during winter months, when the sparkling mountains are lit by Sierra’s signature purple mountain glow each night. But let’s not forget the food. The Lakefront Restaurant serves arguably the best cuisine in Mammoth Lakes, offering an intimate fine dining experience with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients – and plenty of interesting vegetarian options that may even sway a meat-lover. In the summer, take a stroll after dinner along the paved walking trail around Twin Lakes, and keep your eyes open for two of Mammoth Lakes’ most common visitors, bald eagles and black bears.

y igh t s

GOMEZ S Just across from the gondola in the Village at Mammoth, Gomez’s has a laid-back atmosphere and is a firm favourite for locals. It serves up tasty, authentic Mexican food and the world-famous “Mammoth Margarita”, which comes in a glass the size of a fruit bowl. The restaurant also has a selection of over 150 tequilas, so it would be rude not to sample a few of them. The outdoor patio at Gomez’s offers one of the best spots in Mammoth Lakes to enjoy the late afternoon, and also includes an outdoor “playa” to keep children entertained while you enjoy a few speciality drinks.

PETRA S B I STRO a n d W I NE BAR This is a firm favourite for residents in Mammoth Lakes, and visitors too. Located in Alpenhof Lodge, don’t be deceived by the relatively simple décor here, as the restaurant features a tasty seasonal menu and the wines are sourced from boutique wineries across California. If your stay coincides with one of the unique winemaker dinner and tastings, we recommend you book in. And if you’re thirsty for more after dinner, try the Clocktower, an authentic ski bar located directly below Petra’s. It has a great vibe and over 100 different types of whiskey; the perfect place for a night cap.

T H E EATERY The Mammoth Brewery Tasting Room is a great spot for sampling a few locally brewed beers – but it also has a cool, casual restaurant called The Eatery, which is fast becoming a destination in its own right. Making a point not to serve traditional “pub food”, you order from the counter and can choose from the likes of lobster corn dogs and bacon pimento grilled cheese sandwiches. Sit in the beer garden and enjoy the food with a pint of their award-winning beer, while looking out at some of the best views of the Sierra Nevada.

W H ERE TO REST YOUR H EA D

There’ll be no shortage of activities and breath-taking scenery during your visit to Mammoth Lakes, but to complete the experience you want to be able to relax in style at the end of each day. Here are a few of the best boltholes in the area.

t h e vi l l a g e l o dg e Boasting one of the best views in town, this new brasserie restaurant is located above a well-known and state-of-the-art bowling alley (perfect for some pre or post-dinner activity), and features a beautiful outdoor decking area where you can soak up the sun by day. If you’re looking for something a little special, book the private chef’s room just off the main restaurant, where you can feast on a tailored menu of highlights, such as wild mushroom strudel or elk medallions.

Location Centrally located in the Village at Mammoth, The Village Lodge is close to the best of the area’s shopping and dining offerings as well as being perfectly located for year-round outdoor activities. To get here, fly into Mammoth’s regional airport and enjoy a quick, nine mile transfer. It doesn’t get much easier than that, especially in a state as vast as California.

Your room Depending on your party size, choose between one, two and three bed condos. You’ll find that all of these provide you with ample space in which to relax after a day out in the fresh air. The temptation to eat out will be great when in Mammoth Lakes, but if you ever fancy a home cooked meal, you’ll be able to make use of your full-sized kitchen area. A night in is suddenly sounding much more attractive, isn’t it? Beautiful décor inspired by the mountains is to be expected in all of the accommodation and what with a large bathroom and comfortable double bed; you’ll have all you need for a (sort of) self-catered holiday. Still, it’s always nice to know that concierge is at the end of the phone whenever you fancy being waited on.

Why we like it It’s that ‘best of both worlds’ element we mentioned before that we just can’t get enough of. Keen to do your own thing? No problem, your room will serve as a home away from home in one of the best locations you could hope for in Mammoth Lakes. Looking for more of a catered experience? Then make the most of the hotel’s concierge service. Breakfast in bed sounds good to us.

13

the westin m o n a ch e The Westin Monache is the ultimate year-round mountain resort. Throughout winter, world-class ski and snowboard runs lie just moments from the hotel and can be reached with the help of the hotel’s own ski valet service. Then, when the snow has melted summer rolls in, you’ll find the Westin’s concierge team invaluable for arranging any outdoor pursuit you could ever wish to try.

Location The Westin Monache lies in the very heart of the Village at Mammoth so you couldn’t really be any closer to the action if you tried. Getting here is smooth sailing too. Just nine miles from the area’s regional airport, it will be a short transfer before you arrive at this stylish resort. If we’ve arranged car hire for you previously, remember that Yosemite is just a 30 mile drive away; an easy day out when you find yourself eager to explore the surrounding areas.

Your room The rooms at the Westin all sport classic, mountain lodge décor with a contemporary edge. Ranging from studio suites to two bed luxury suites, all rooms boast large windows that allow for spectacular views out to the stunning landscapes beyond. Bright, cosy and complete with deluxe amenities, this is just the sort of accommodation you’ll want to come back to after a tiring day outside.

14

Why we like it Location, location, location. Seriously, arriving at the Westin, we found it hard to believe just how centrally located this hotel is. Literally a stone’s throw from the Village’s charming shops, bars and restaurants as well as the resort’s gondola; you’re in prime position to really make the most of every moment you spend in this wondrous part of California. Plus, the outdoor pool and hot tub have views to die for.

S I ERRA NE VA D A RESORT AN D SPA When it first opened in the late sixties, this beautifully located resort immediately became a popular escape for Hollywood stars –John Wayne and the Rat Pack as just a couple that we’ll name drop. Many well-heeled folk have since passed through its doors and today, after a full renovation, it remains a much-loved, family-run retreat in Mammoth Lakes. And if the resort and its surrounding area weren’t enough of an escape, they also have a blissfully zen spa where you can indulge in treatments for the ultimate restorative break.

Location The Sierra Nevada Resort & Spa is set in the heart of Mammoth Lakes, an easy stroll from shops and restaurants in the area, or a short drive to the lakes, ski slopes and other key local landmarks, such as Devil’s Postpile. You are just 12 miles from Mammoth Yosemite Airport, where you can catch internal flights, or a few hours beautiful drive from San Francisco, LA and Death Valley.

Your room Whether you go for a chalet, a deluxe room or a fireplace suite, your abode will be full of the rustic charm that is synonymous with this area. Think alpine wood, rich colours and cosy rugs – but all laced with the luxury you’d expect. After a day exploring the lush, ever-green landscapes of Mammoth Lake, relax in front of the log fire in your suite, while you soak up the tranquillity of the resort.

Why we like it The location of the resort is ideal (and we love the history that comes with it too), but the icing on the cake here has to be the gourmet cuisine on offer. There are three equally delicious restaurants, so you can choose between Greek, Asian or traditional North American food; and after each active day in Mammoth Lakes, believe us, you’ll be grateful for the feast.

What do you love about Mammoth Lakes?

If we had only one day in Mammoth Lakes, what should we see?

I think it’s the lifestyle and the outdoor activities that has kept me here for 12 years. My favourite places in particular are the views from the top of Duck Pass and Crystal Lake.

The Lakes Basin is a must, and you should definitely rock climb Crystal Crag if you’re a little more adventurous. Other popular activities include hiking, biking and fishing.

Is the town busy all year round or is there a quiet time?

Where do you recommend for a bit of pampering?

Traditionally, May and October are quiet and are known as the “shoulder seasons” but each year they seem to get a little busier.

Double Eagle Spa at Snowcreek or InTouch Microspa are both great spas you can visit in Mammoth.

Where serves the best breakfast?

Why is Mammoth Lakes such a unique part of California to visit?

Good Life Café or The Stove do the best sit down breakfast, but when I need to ‘grab and go’ it’s Stellar Brew. For the top coffee in town I always go to Black Velvet, and I really recommend Whitebark restaurant for cocktails. But my favourite place to eat overall is Mammoth Tavern.

Although Mammoth Lakes is in the heart of California, it feels like a hidden gem. The scenery here is second to none. If you like outdoor activities this will be your mecca, plus all everyone here is so laid back and friendly.

tyler m ay Tyler May is a Sales and Marketing Coordinator at the Westin Monache Resort in Mammoth, and also helps out at Petra’s Bistro. In the summer, she likes to go hiking, biking, fishing and swimming; in the winter she loves nothing more than snowboarding.

How long have you lived here, and what keeps you here in Mammoth Lakes? 186

I’ve been here for 15 months and whilst Mammoth Lakes is the place I’m able to grow my current career, it is also the most beautiful place in California.

Is the town busy all year round or is there a quiet time? Mammoth Lakes is quite busy in the peak of summer and winter. However, the town slows down substantially from Easter to about the 4th of July, and again from mid-September until the first big storm in December.

Where serves the best breakfast? My favourite place for breakfast in town is Base Camp Café, but if you want the best coffee head to Stellar Brew. I may have a bias opinion as I work there, but my favourite place to eat in town is definitely Petra’s, and Mammoth Tavern does the great cocktails if you’re looking for something a little stronger.

If we’re in need of pampering, where is the best spa? I would recommend Double Eagle Spa inside the Snowcreek Athletic Club.

Where’s your favourite spot? That would have to be the 360’ view from the Peak of Mammoth Mountain.

If we had only one day in Mammoth Lakes, what would you recommend we see? On a first trip to Mammoth Lakes I would highly recommend taking the Gondola to the Peak of the Mountain. However, if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, hike into Red’s Meadow at the top of the peak to see Devil’s Postpile and Rainbow Falls. Personally, I think the most beautiful walk is to a place called Crystal Lake. And if hiking isn’t your thing, then you can still enjoy the beauty of Mammoth Lakes on the Town Trolley. It’s a great complimentary way to view town and take a ride up to the Lakes Basin.

J EFF S I M PSON Jeff Simpson works for Mono County and has spent the last 4 months in Mammoth but lived in the area for 18 years.

Can you describe your favourite place in the area? I love Duck Pass Trail; it follows a series of spectacular alpine lakes and meadows through the John Muir wilderness. It’s stunning.

What’s your favourite time of year here? I think October is the best time to visit because it’s lovely and quiet.

Where serves the best breakfast? Tom’s Place. It’s authentic and delicious – and it has great views.

If we fancy something a little stronger, where should we go? Mammoth Brewing Company, an award-winning local brewery that’s been going for about 20 years.

If we can only see one thing in Mammoth Lakes, what should it be? Definitely Devils Postpile. It’s a good hike and an iconic site in the area. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here. I also think the loop around Convict Lake is a beautiful walk.

And if we don’t fancy a hike? Take the free transit around town.

Where serves the best coffee in town?

Where’s the best place for a pampering treat?

Black Velvet.

Hands down Simply Massage.

Why is Mammoth Lakes such a unique part of California to visit? The Mountains, the mountains, the mountains.

TAKE M E M A M M OT LAKES When it comes to travelling to Mammoth Lakes, there are several options. So, to make it easier for you, we’ve hand-picked our recommended routes to ensure you have an easy and stress-free journey. You see, there are two 20 international airports in California that are located relatively close to Mammoth Lakes – Los Angeles and San Francisco – both of which also offer internal flights straight to Mammoth’s airport, although the latter is a seasonal service. If you decide to make it a road trip, you can rest assured that whichever direction you’re coming from, the drive will be incredibly scenic.

FRO M LAS V E G AS If you’ve spent a few days in the illuminated playground of Las Vegas, the drive up to Mammoth Lakes will be a refreshing change of scene, although just as magical. Regardless of the season, the “sin and snow” combination is a popular one, as it offers two very diverse experiences, with an incredible drive through Death Valley on route. If time is of the essence, there are twice weekly flights from Vegas to Mammoth in the winter, so you can go from casino strip to snowy slopes in a couple of hours.

TO OT H

FRO M LOS AN G ELES Fly direct from London to Los Angeles International Airport in only eleven hours. There are many flights departing each week at varying times, meaning you can pick one that’ll suit your itinerary best. Then, when you get there, you can expect your journey time by road from LA’s airport to take approximately five hours, via beautiful scenery and easy highways. That’s not too bad, right? But if you’re tight on time, then opt for the internal flight. You miss the scenic drive but you’ll be there in just over an hour.

21

FRO M SAN FRAN C I S C O Flights from London Heathrow to San Francisco take roughly 10 hours and 30 minutes, but depending on the season, travel time on to Mammoth Lakes by road can take up to seven hours. During the summer you can plan a route that takes you directly through Yosemite National Park, stopping there for a night or two to break up the journey; but in winter, just hop on a connecting flight straight out of San Francisco and be there in about an hour. You’re on holiday, after all.
