Aspen Snowmass really comes into its own in the winter. Its snowy mountains and the experiences they offer are the reason this destination earned a firm place on the tourist map after all. Now, there are plenty of exciting activities one can indulge in on a trip to Aspen Snowmass, but we’ve got a few exceptional offerings you just can’t miss. From night time snowcat adventure to a taste of the region’s world-famous Après-ski, here’s what we think you should make time for whilst you’re in the area.

S n o w cat D i n n e r R i des Scattered amongst the mountains are a few authentic alpine cabins where you can dine on some seriously tasty dishes.

Better still, book an evening meal at your favourite and you could find yourself transported there via snowcat.

These huge vehicles are able to work their way up any slippery slope, so you’ll be able to enjoy some incredible, backcountry mountain views from the warmth of the passenger car without the effort that cross country skiing requires.

Scenic rides and gourmet cuisine.

That’s mountain life for you.

Skiing and snowboarding is the reason most people come to Aspen Snowmass, and there’s a good reason why. The mountains here boast some of the world’s best runs, for all abilities.

You’ve got super soft green runs for the kids at one end of the spectrum and some pretty frightening black runs for the expert skiers at the other. If you’re travelling with the kids but fancy giving some of the harder slopes a go, there are plenty of children’s groups led by qualified instructors that you can sign your little ones up to for a couple of hours. Get up early and you can even join a group of instructors as they head out to catch the first run of the day. Fresh powder and a glorious sun rise. Sounds idyllic, right?

T ub i n g This is a relatively new addition to Aspen Snowmass’ repertoire, but it’s proved to be a hit with the kids and adults alike (especially if you’re not too confident on your skis). All you have to do is sit in a rubber ring and glide down the slopes. Easy yet invigorating, we say you give this a go as soon as the tubing runs open in the afternoon for a little break from skiing. The four tubing runs are located at the Elk Camp in Snowmass and are serviced by a number of ski lifts. We wouldn’t blame you for using the kids as an excuse to stay here all day.

Après-Ski Yep, we have a bit of a penchant for skiing, but it’s the food and drink that comes after a day out on the snow that we love just as much. Any excuse to chow down and we’re there.

Especially when you’ve got places like 39 Degrees at the Sky Hotel offering thirst quenching cocktails alongside their signature burgers, warming soups and cheese platters. And let’s not forget Gwyn’s High Alpine, where the most mouth-watering dishes are served daily.

Gourmet three-course meal, a comforting bowl of chicken stew or a classic burger, you name it, High Alpine’s got it.

Apres-ski is as much a part of the alpine experience as the skiing is, so be sure to make the most of it.

Buttermilk, sounds sweet right? Well, this lovely little mountain really is and just so happens to be one of the areas more suitable for beginners and families. So, if it’s a first time on those skis for you or you’ve got some youngsters in tow, this is the one to head to. Located close to restaurants and hotels, you won’t have to lug your gear far either.

Nicknamed the ‘Athlete’s Mountain’, Aspen Mountain has some of the most challenging terrain in the whole of North America. So, adrenaline seekers, this is the place to strap on those ski boots and exert yourself. What’s more, there’s an impressive 76 slopes to choose from, and that’s without taking into account the off-piste powder. The gondola ensures you get up and down the mountain quickly and safely and offers some incredible views.

Boasting over 3000 acres of terrain, 94 trails and 21 chairlifts, Snowmass is undoubtedly a skier’s paradise. When you arrive, you’ll find a town engulfed in a valley of dramatic mountain ranges and soaring peaks so dynamic you’d think you’ve stepped onto a film set.

If there’s one place that even the most seasoned traveller will be stunned by, it’s the Aspen Highlands. It won’t be the high altitude that’ll take your breath away, but the sheer beauty and size of the mountain before you (360 degree views over the Maroon Bells?

Yes please.). Ski (or snowboard) on the infamous Highland Bowl, only accessible by hiking or hopping on board a snowcat, for something really different. It’s a thrilling experience for the adrenaline seeker and considered a rite of passage for a first time visitor.

Alternatively, take the Deep Temerity lift to the 237 additional skiable acres. Yep, you’re in big-mountain territory now.

It’s made up of three ski areas: West Buttermilk, the easy run, Main Buttermilk, a regular run, and for those adrenaline junkies, Tiehack is the more difficult. With 44 trails to suit a range of different abilities, you’ve got plenty to choose from on this powdery misted peak.

Buttermilk is also renowned for hosting the X Games since 2002. The 22foot superpipe in the terrain park was voted number one for best pipe by the Transworld Snowboarding Magazine Reader’s Poll. This may seem intense, and we’re not suggesting to hurl yourself into it (unless you want to), but it’s quite the impressive sight and many Olympians and professionals have graced the pipe.

If you’re an early bird, join the staff on their ‘First Tracks’ and be the first to hit the fresh powder of the day.

In March 2017 the FIS World Cup Finals are going to take place here, leading on from the success of many previous championships that have based themselves on Aspen mountain. And if you’re interested in high-altitude living, join a free mountain tour and discover all you need to know about wildlife tracking and avalanches.

At 14,000 feet, Snowmass is the largest mountain in the area and its beautiful wide slopes are lined with snow-capped forests. With so many slopes to choose from, there’s plenty of snow to go around and it never feels crowded. The ski runs range in difficulty from Green runs to extensive Blue runs, to some of the most advanced in the area for the experts amongst you. Their awardwinning terrain park gives freestylers time to hone their skills, whilst snow schools are available for the kids.

So, even though this resort is widely popular with advanced skiers, whether you want to cruise or plummet your way down the mountain, these wide slopes have room for everyone. There’s also powder and snow shoe tours, cross-country skiing and the chance to catch first tracks with the staff at sunrise for those who want something a bit different.

As well as a truly spectacular setting, Aspen Snowmass also boasts an eclectic winter events calendar, so there’s always something going on in and around the town to make your trip that bit more special. Here’s a little taster of some of our favourite events throughout the colder months.

1 2 days o f A spe n

Unlike the song, the 12 Days of Aspen event doesn’t include a partridge in a pear tree or six geese a-laying. As Christmassy traditions go, however, Aspen has done a great job. It all kicks off on the 20th December with a free ice skating show by the Aspen Skating Club. Then, throughout the rest of the infamous 12 days, Aspen offers yoga for skiers up Aspen Mountain, there’s the annual Torchlight Parade where kids and adults of all ages are invited to follow the trail of lights down the slopes of Snowmass and, of course, cookies and cocoa, amongst many other things. To top it off, Santa’s even brought his reindeer along for the occasion. Just thinking about it has got us excited for Christmas. A great one for all the family.

On the slopes of the towering snowcapped Buttermilk Mountain, X Games showcases the best skiing and snowboarding talent around in its annual competition. You’ll be amazed at these athletes’ tricks and skills as they plummet down slopes and across pipes. What’s more, the evening features live music from some of the world’s most famous musicians, exclusive film showcases and much more. With all events free to the public, there’s no excuse not to go.

You’ll see all sorts of quirky goingson at this festival as people strive to defeat those post-holiday blues. Get a team together and enter Wintersculpt, a competition that offers you a chance to have a go at ice sculpting.

If something warmer takes your fancy, go along to Soupsköl, a soup-cooking contest judged by the public to reveal which restaurant has the best soup in town. What with some spectacular fireworks and the peculiar canine fashion show, you won’t be forgetting Wintersköl in a hurry.

B ud L i ght S p r i n g J am The premier spring festival in the Rocky Mountains. Head to Aspen and Snowmass Village for your constant supply of competitions and parties over two weekends. Like any good event, it starts with a celebration with the Core Party concert in downtown Aspen.

KickAspen Big Air brings ski and snowboard competitors together to face off under the lights at the base of Aspen Mountain. Want to slide a box or hit a rail yourself? Get instruction for these impressive tricks at a boot camp in a mini-park on Snowmass before letting loose at one of the Hi-Fi concerts.

As the sun sets on yet another snow filled day in Aspen Snowmass and the cold of night begins to creep in, all you’ll be craving is a good meal in a beautiful setting. Luckily, that’s easy enough to come by in these parts.

It seems the fresh alpine air and unadulterated beauty of the mountains has inspired a huge number of gourmet eateries. We’ve been fortunate enough to go on a bit of a tasting tour through Aspen Snowmass, and these are the winter wonders we want you to experience first-hand.

Located within the Sky Hotel, 39 degrees is renowned for its après-ski party vibe and, of course, the mouthwatering food it rustles up to keep all those skiers sated. The burgers and creative cocktails are the common favourite whilst the huge fireplace and chic alpine décor makes for a cosy atmosphere. Most definitely the place to be seen in Aspen.

Making the most of those mountain views is Eight K at The Viceroy on Snowmass Mountain. It dazzles with its 87 foot long glass bar as you dine around a fireplace. The food is selfproclaimed as comfort food (well, it is chilly up here) with innovation.

Try the Colorado cheese stuffed bacon burger, complete with arugula, crispy onions and their unique “whole grain dijonaise” hand-cut fries. If that doesn’t refuel you after an energetic day, we don’t know what will.

If you make your way up the Aspen Highlands Mountain – 10,740 feet up, that is – you’ll find Cloud Nine.

Here you can sit back and take in the views of the Maroon Bells while you feast on a truly alpine menu (we say try the elk ragout with lingonberries).

Be sure to start off with a big pot of the fondu; you’ll need it after a day out in the fresh air.

Krabloonik; the purveyors of fine dining with a side of dogsledding (we know, your dream come true).

Seriously though, we couldn’t not include this quirky establishment on our list. Take a look at the menu and you’ll quickly realise that it’s all about game and fresh fish here. There’s also an award-winning wine list to choose from that’ll pair nicely with your dish.

Now, it’s in no way mandatory for you to embark on a dog sled ride before you eat but, really, why not?

E xc i t i n g E ve n ts Christmas sees some of Aspen Snowmass’ most exciting events come to life. For one, Santa makes an appearance or two in the run up to Christmas to double check he’s got his list right for the little ones. Plus you’ve got tree lighting celebrations, carollers, fireworks and lashings of cocoa. The Christmas cheer throughout the region is palpable and infectious.

Whether you’re looking to fill your little ones with wonder or are in need of a romantic adults-only break, spending a Christmas in Aspen Snowmass will tick all the boxes.

Spend a Christmas in Aspen or Snowmass and no longer will you be dreaming of a white Christmas, you’ll be living one. The slopes open in November, so by December 25th we can guarantee there will be snow on the ground. Wake up on Christmas day, go tubing, skiing or sledding and then settle down for a classic Christmas dinner.

It’s one of the best places on earth to realise the white Christmas dream.

If you were travelling anywhere else, we wouldn’t recommend you leave your Christmas shopping to the last minute, but seeing as we’re talking about Aspen Snowmass, we recommend you do. Not only is shopping here a relaxing and atmospheric experience, but the shops themselves are quirky and individual. Selling everything from antiques to ski gear to the latest gadgets, wander through Aspen or Snowmass village and you’ll have all your shopping done in no time and a lot of happy faces looking back at you come Christmas morning.

As you’ll see from this newspaper, there really is no bad time to go to Aspen Snowmass, it just depends on what you want to get up to. If you’re a big fan of the snow, then November till April is the perfect time for you to be hitting the slopes on your skis or snowboard. More into hiking and biking?

Then the summer months and early autumn (May until September) will suit you perfectly.

Aspen/Pitkin County airport is only four miles from Aspen Snowmass, and the easiest way to get to this airport from London is by hopping on a flight to Denver and catching a connecting flight. The total travel time is around 14 hours. If you’re coming from LA, you’ll take the same route, but total travel time is just two hours.

For non-US citizens planning to travel to the United States travel authorisation is required as part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Not to worry, this is simple and can be attained through an online registration system known as ESTA. It will be valid for a period of two years or until the date on which your passport expires, whichever comes first. Without an ESTA you could be refused travel.

H ot A i r B a l l oo n i n g For panoramic views over Aspen Snowmass and the mountains beyond, nothing quite beats jumping into the basket of a hot air balloon. Whilst this experience is available all year round, we’re of the opinion that a balmy summer’s day up in the clouds is the best way to enjoy this experience. Head out just after sunrise to enjoy the fresh air and quiet atmosphere of mid-morning before landing to enjoy a champagne brunch. A unique and spectacular ride that we can easily arrange for you before you go.

Ra f t i n g Aspen Snowmass, amongst many other things, is one of the best areas in the world for white water rafting.

A landscape punctuated by the flow of mild streams and roaring rivers, you’ve got the opportunity to head out on a full or half day adventure with a variety of experienced guides. Something of a thrill seeker? Then the Shoshone section of the Colorado River has some class III rapids that will leave you breathless. If you want to appreciate the scenery on a gentler ride, then there are numerous trips that cover easier class I and class II rapids also.

Alongside the hundreds of hiking trails, you’ve also got hundreds of biking trails, so if you prefer two wheels to walking, you’re in luck.

Probably one of the destination’s biggest summer draws, mountain bike enthusiasts descend upon Aspen Snowmass every year without fail to take advantage of these unique and thrilling trails. Don’t like the idea of freestyling your way down a mountain dirt track? Not to worry, there are enough road biking trails that will keep you occupied for hours as you cycle around town and beyond. Both Aspen and Snowmass villages are awash with bike rental shops, too, so you don’t have to worry about equipment.

Hiking Home to hundreds of hiking trails that lay concealed beneath the snow throughout the winter months, Aspen Snowmass is a ramblers dream. The trails vary in length and difficulty so whether you’re looking for a short walk to tire the kids out or fancy an extensive challenge; you’ll find plenty to suit your needs. The East of Aspen trail is one of our favourites for its ease and scenic views, but if you’re really looking to go hard, the Ute Trail with its steep climbs and rocky terrain will both challenge and delight you. For an unbeatable view of the Snowmass valley that’s perfect for the days you’re feeling snap happy, then follow the Rim Trail which you can pick up from Snowmass Village.

The Maroon Bells are the incredible twin peaks of the Elk Mountain range. The most famous photographs of summertime in Aspen Snowmass you’ll ever see have probably been taken here, where vast alpine lakes are surrounded by colourful wildflowers that are reflected in the clear waters.

Standing at over 14,000 feet, the peaks are best viewed from the shores of Maroon Lake. In amongst the wildflowers, you’ll be left mesmerised at the size and beauty of the mountains that surround you. Decorated with innumerable lakes, streams and forests, you’ll enjoy the feeling of being completely out in the wild here.

When the sun shines and the sky is an endless blue, the contrast of colours is truly spectacular.

Maroon Lake is a big draw, of course. As we’ve already told you, this reflective lake is surrounded by colourful wildflowers and lush greenery – it’s also got the best views of the Maroon Bells. There is so much more in the area to see, however.

For example, if you make the most of the hiking trails that can be found in all directions, you’ll no doubt come across more lakes and beautiful trickling streams. If you’re really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of deer and moose too. You’ll bear witness to the glacial valley and, whilst motorised vehicles are restricted from the roads to the Maroon Bells, bikes aren’t, so you can explore this stunning area on two wheels, too.

T H E AT R E A S P E N

The Snowmass Rodeo is a real slice of American history, dating back to the 1800’s when ranch hands would come together to showcase their skills on horseback. A colourful parade kicks off the rodeo, with events including bull and saddle bronc riding and team roping to be enjoyed in the arena.

The Snowmass Rodeo gives you that quintessential cowboy experience with a 16 foot mobile smoker that serves classic dishes such as St. Louis style ribs, pulled pork and chicken tacos.

Here you’ll also find some amazing traditional western crafts, jewellery, décor and clothing. So, go on partner, what are you waiting for, kick off those work shoes and don your cowboy boots and spurs for a one of a kind magical event this summer.

Aspen really is a cultural hotspot beyond its idyllic scenery and, from June to August, it offers a theatrical spectacular.

You can expect a highly varied repertoire, lots of music and a little dash of naughty humour. Unlike the Edinburgh or Adele Fringe Festivals, Theatre Aspen’s primary focus is good old fashioned theatre, combining Broadway extravaganzas with more rustic home grown productions. Featuring stunning venues like the Theatre Aspen itself, this truly is an unmissable show.

Now, we all love good food and delicious wines, and nowhere does it better than the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen. This three day extravaganza brings together the world’s top winemakers, chefs and culinary luminaries and includes more than 80 cooking demonstrations, wine seminars and of course, those all important tasting sessions. Have your taste buds tantalised by food masters like Tom Colicchio and Jacques Pépin at this one of a kind food festival, all situated against the breath-taking backdrop of the magnificent Aspen Mountain.

Marvel as the whole sky over Snowmass is dotted with brightly coloured balloons at the Snowmass Balloon Festival. Taking place at the end of the summer, this event involves challenges for pilots over three days, such as a distance race covering the whole of the Roaring Fork Valley.

A definite highlight is the Saturday Evening Glow with music and a light show that illuminates the night sky.

Venga Venga is the brain child of acclaimed chef Richard Sandoval, whose meticulous skills in the kitchen have produced one of Snowmass’ culinary success stories. Situated right at the foot of Snowmass Mountain, make a visit to Venga Venga and you can expect astounding views alongside your delicious servings of authentic Mexican cuisine. Oh, and there’s a tequila bar with over 70 different types of tequila on offer.

It’s going to be a good night.

Steakhouse No. 316 delivers up phenomenal steak (sourced from a nearby ranch) and is considered to be a great option for fine dining in Aspen.

There’s a choice of eight different juicy steaks or plump mussels with champagne, peppers and garlic. The options of sauces to cover your steak will make you wish you could have them all, from black truffle butter to caramelised shallot shitaki demi and blue cheese bone marrow butter. Is your mouth watering yet?

The Little Nell is home to the recentlyopened Element 47 at the base of Aspen Mountain, named after the silver element in the periodic table, a nod to Aspen’s mining history.

Contemporary cuisine is at the heart of this soulful restaurant, with dishes such as crab with mango and red onion, and salmon with avocado and curry on offer. The centre piece of the restaurant has to be the glass wine wall, signalling the presence of an award-winning wine cellar.

What’s in a name? In the case of The Artisan at The Stonebridge Inn, everything. The very word ‘artisan’ conjures up a sense of the hand-crafted quality of the food you will find here, all the creation of talented Chef Randall Baldwin. The culinary delights at this place are made from the finest, locally sourced ingredients and presented in the most beautiful way. To maximise your time in this lovely eatery, head to the lounge bar for a cocktail before or after your meal.

T H E PA R A D E Aspen Snowmass’ parade is the quintessential American celebration.

Hordes of locals and visitors line the streets to catch a view of the floats and participants as they go past and the US flag can be seen being waved everywhere you look by onlookers adorned in face paint. The atmosphere is electric and even if you’re not a US resident, you’ll find yourself cheering as loud as the patriots before you know it. The parade is invariably made up of impressive floats, real-life cowboys, local fire trucks and much more. It really kicks off the day’s celebrations in the right way, and from there on in you’ll be ready to party the rest of the day away.

Once you’ve seen the parade, you’ll no doubt be up for a bit of live music, which just so happens to be in abundance on the fourth of July in Aspen Snowmass. The Aspen Music Festival and School puts on a free show each year in the Benedict Music Tent and for many this concert is the highlight of the day and an important tradition. The group invariably play patriotic classics to stir up some more excitement and the opportunity to watch such a talented group of musicians is one you can’t miss.

There’s no doubt about it, the fireworks put on by Aspen Snowmass are the pièce de résistance of this special date. After an incredible day watching parades, music concerts and enjoying family picnics, you’re then treated to an explosive display of colours that fizz and burst above Aspen Mountain. Everything about this experience is magical; the sounds, the sparkling colours, the stunning mountainous backdrop and of course, the infectious buzz of excitement of the 20,000 strong crowd.
