最近三個月澳洲及亞洲都沒有重要賽事舉行，馬壇看似平靜，反觀環球 股市卻風起雲湧，多國金融市場都出現尋底格局。賽馬向來是金錢玩意，
雖然和股市未至於唇齒相依，但馬主炒股票損手，或多或少會影響買馬意欲， 此刻未知對馬業的實際影響，希望不會有太大波動，整個行業繼續健康發展。 撰文：徐懿

n the past three months there have been no particular feature races run in Australia or Asia, and so tracks have looked rather quiet - a lot quieter than,
the global stock markets, for example. Horse racing is not related to stock market activity though, not directly anyway. But there’s no denying they’re both money games and inextricably linked too, as the financial situation of owners will inevitably affect their willingness to invest in horses. The effect of recent stock market upheavals on racing still remains to be seen, but hopefully the breeding industry will ride the waves and still enjoy sustainable development. Text : Stephen Chui

Once again it seemed likely to develop into a duel between the home team and Hong Kong raiders, but with both Aerovelocity and Lucky Nine missing the race, it was left to Rich Tapestry, who was not particularly well fancied either in Japan or in Hong Kong, to represent Hong Kong on his own. There was no stand out among the home team either, so it was widely believed that older runners would have their juniors’ measure. And, in the event, the 6YO Straight Girl did just that, proving herself a super mare yet again when closing off strongly to land this prestigious race and following up on her success in the G1 Victoria Mile back in May. A field of 15 took part in the 2015 Sprinters Stakes, with Rich Tapestry the only overseas raider. Since the retirement of the freakishly talented Lord Kanaloa, Japanese racing has been in search of another outstanding sprinter. But this looked an even race, with Straight Girl being the favourite, though not a red hot one. Back-to-back winner Bel Canto started second favourite, while Uliuli, who ran second in an important leadup, was also well-fancied. Rich Tapestry, meanwhile, was a 9-1 shot.

racing world’s greatest ever success stories. And it’s a story that not only has a past and present, but one that could well impact upon future generations. Text : Billy Orr

This legendary racehorse held a nation in-thrall (not to mention a global stage) for win after win after win after win. Twenty five in total before retiring – undefeated – following the TJ Smith on 13th April 2013: a 15th G1 victory and with close enough to AUD$9 million in the bank. here are plenty of big names in the training ranks worldwide: names such as Irish conqueror Aidan O’Brien, America’s Todd Pletcher and reigning
Hong Kong champion John Moore are well established in their respective countries. But very few trainers can match the feats of Bart Cummings, the Australian handler who first burst onto the scene in the 1960s and helped to usher in a new era in racing down under. Cummings died in late August, but the legend of the man regarded as the “Cups King” for his prolific winning record in the Melbourne Cup will always be remembered.

His father, Jim, was a top trainer whose finest hour came when he prepared Comic Court to win the 1950 Melbourne Cup – a horse that Bart strapped. He left school when he was 14, working as a strapper in his father’s stable. With a great mentor, the younger Cummings quickly qualified for his training license in 1953 and set up his own yard at Glenelg. He began strongly and landed his first important trophy, the South Australian Derby, in 1958.

Contemporary racing fans have been treated to Douglas Whyte’s epic 13 premierships in a row, and we are now witnessing another evolution of Hong Kong racing with Zac Purton and Joao Moreira enjoying great success over the past two seasons. Meanwhile, in terms of trainers, there have been a number of high achievers, but the Moore family is the enduring brand, maintaining its place at the top level for decades, with both the late George Moore and his son, John, being first among champions. But what happened was that the Moores scored a quick double with the 50/1 Scallywag and another longshot Natural Flair, both ridden by Edward Hide, followed by Brian Taylor winning on the 10/1 shot Honey Grove and apprentice Johnny Ho completing the fourpeat on 8/1 Superb Master. Although the major credit did not go to John Moore, he did at least earn himself a bit of fame, and more importantly perhaps, the very first injection of confidence for his future training career.

Having achieved so much in Hong Kong, John Moore started seeking overseas success in 1995 when he sent Horse of the Year Makarpura Star to Australia. Unfortunately, Makarpura Star’s campaign at the Melbourne Spring Carnival was brought to an end when the son of Native Kingdom suffered from an elevated temperature after running third in the Mackinnon Stakes. I have been closely following Moore’s overseas team ever since, including August 2002 when the 3YO Able Choice was beaten by Bel Esprit, now one of the Eliza Park International’s aces, in a 1000m listed event. Most of these early missions, including the trips of Able One and Viva Pataca, ended up falling short. But two things I have noted about John Moore are his passion for racing and his determination to succeed. His efforts finally paid off in 2013 when he scored in four overseas Group Ones in Dubai and Singapore with Military Attack and Sterling City.

賽馬如人生，漫漫長路，何日達成心 願，跟終點何在都是未知數，只管一息尚存， 努力行好每一步。對於上兩季「威爾頓」及 「步步友」貴為馬王，再錦上添花已無必要， 就如說約翰摩亞是一級練馬師，人所共知已 欠缺意義，他宣示完美主義，得不到總要達 到，就如失意於從騎之年，為缺失全力以赴， 今天所創，已徹底超越摩加利，綜合時空， 包括對手與競爭力，個人無心刻意將約翰摩 亞與其父老摩相比，留給外人評價便是。 The Moore stable also produced successive Horses of the Year, namely Designs On Rome and Able Friend, just two of the many highlights of John’s career. And even today, we might say that John has achieved even more in the racing world than his brother Gary - perhaps even more than his great father, George, too.

三年前，香港馬會頒布新例，讓合資格練馬 師於65歲退休年齡之後申請續牌，好事之徒竊竊 私語，說相關條款為約翰摩亞度身定造，我看在 眼裡，一方面只視乎所有持牌者本事，二來有能者 居之，約翰摩亞符合又如何？他富甲一方，名利都 盡在手中，更不是蒙混過關，每周至少五個早上， 穿梭於馬房與烽火台之間，將心比己，趨近花甲 之年，別論魄力，換轉是閣下，可會依然為事業奮 鬥？若稍加思索，當明白約翰摩亞所追求的，又豈 是只滿足於三餐糊口？ Three years ago, The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced changes to the rules requiring compulsory retirement at 65. The changes enable licensed trainers who meet specific performance criteria to apply for a licensing extension beyond the current compulsory retirement age. Some argued that the changes were tailor-made for John Moore. But in my opinion, they are all about a trainers’ ability and are fair to everyone. And I do believe, to a rich and well-accomplished man like John Moore, what is driving him onwards is no longer money or fame but an endless desire of perfection.

Tendonitis is one of the most common injuries among racehorses. Like bones, tendons in the horses’ legs are very vulnerable as they are subjected to tremendous stress when the horse is racing at full speed. Younger horses being over-trained or running on hard surfaces have a higher risk of tendon problems. That’s why a tendon scan is a crucial part of any pre-purchase vet check. A thorough tendon scan can also help in the diagnosis of suspensory ligament injuries. The suspensory ligament runs from the top of the back of the cannon bone via the sesamoid bone, and is one of the most vulnerable of a horse’s muscle tissues because at speed it is the area that bears the strongest pressure. 馬匹在賽事中突然骨折，其中一個原因就是骨骼有隱性毛病存在。 Invisible defects in the bone is one of the reasons for horses breaking down while racing.

Like its counterpart the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Singapore Turf Club has designed a well-formatted official website (turfclub.com.sg) providing bilingual information in Chinese and English. For any regular user of the HKJC website, browsing turfclub.com.sg would not be a problem. The major differences, given the usage of simplified Chinese characters in Singapore, information on turfclub.com.sg is in simplified Chinese. Users of search engine on the website also needs to type in simplified Chinese Characters rather than traditional Chinese Characters for related search results. 房旗下的每一匹賽駒，地域界限早已不成障礙。當然，我也認同人跟馬匹一樣， 總要有停下來的時間，故此每年六月我都會抽空到英國，參與世上其中一個最享 負盛明的賽馬嘉年華皇家雅士谷賽期，今年我更派出「河山之神」參戰一級賽鑽 禧錦標，力圖再闖高峰。這匹Snitzel子嗣曾經在澳洲攻下一級賽，我們決定安排 牠到皇家雅士谷進行告別戰，而我亦到訪安頓「河山之神」位於新市場的馬房， 親身監督備戰程序。雖然賽果並非我們所渴望的童話式結局，但「河山之神」已 跑出本身應有水準，目前牠已被運返澳洲，並於Newgate牧場展開種馬生涯。

ith the Melbourne Spring Carnival upon us, it is the busiest time of year for me and my team. The constant travel between Sydney and Melbourne is
essential so that I can spend time training and monitoring each and every single horse under my care, irrespective of its location. I think that it is important for everyone to have a little bit of down time, horses and human alike, so in June each year I head over to England to attend one of the greatest racing carnivals in the world, Royal Ascot. Never one to rest on my laurels, this year I had a horse racing in the G1 Diamond Jubilee, Wandjina. This Snitzel colt was a G1 winner in Australia and it was decided that his swan song would be at Royal Ascot. I would travel to Newmarket, where he was stabled, regularly to oversee his preparation leading into the great race. Although it wasn’t the fairy tale ending we had all hoped for, he acquitted himself very well on the day, and Wandjina was off to Newgate Stud in Australia to commence his new career as a stallion.
