PROSAFE through its parent company Blackwoods is a proud partner of THE FRED HOLLOWS FOUNDATION’S INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIA PROGRAM. Almost $3,000,000 donated since 2008 It is an honour to support The Fred Hollows Foundation and see first-hand the impact our donation has made in peoples lives. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults are three times more likely to go blind than non-Indigenous Australians, yet 94% of their vision loss is preventable or treatable. The Fred Hollows Foundation works to put an end to these alarming figures by focusing on education, screening and treatment. The Foundation is working hard to achieve the following: 1. Deliver surgery and medical treatment for cataract, diabetic retinopathy and the elimination of trachoma 2. Increase access to services for patients in remote communities. 3. Coordinate and improve outreach services so everyone who needs medical care gets it. 4. Provide training and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health staff.
10%
of sales is donated from every item in the Eye Protection range* sold through Blackwoods in Australia. Learn more about our partnership here
https://www.hollows.org/au/corporate-partnerships/blackwoods *Welding helmet and welding goggles are not included in this program, Armadillo face shield and it’s accessories are included in this program.
EYE PROTECTION
All eye protection is tested to be capable of withstanding impact from a specified weight ball without cracking, detaching or dislodging, breaking or coming into contact with the eye or the head. AS/NZS test requirements categorise impact resistance into four categories:
Low Impact
Tested full face on at 12m/sec
Medium Impact
Tested front on, as well as side on at 45m/sec
High Impact and Very High Impact is applicable to visors only. Visors are the only eye/face products that can be rated to this level of protection. For faceshields and visors see head protection.
High Impact
Tested front on, as well as side on at 120m/sec
Very High Impact
Tested front on, as well as side on at 190m/sec
Protective devices do not provide unlimited protection. This information is intended to aid in identifying and selecting the types of eye and face protectors that are available, their capabilities and limitations for the hazards listed. This guide is not intended to be the sole reference in selecting the proper eye and face protector.

HANDLING GLOVES
HAND PROTECTION
Handling gloves made from cotton or a polyester/ cotton blend serve a variety of purposes, they can be used to handle objects where added grip is needed or for protecting items being handled, from dirt or natural oils found on the hand. Alternatively, they are an excellent glove liner, providing a barrier between the hand and gloves, for comfort, and sweat absorption.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Protecting your lungs against the hazards of dust, mist, aerosols, fumes, and smoke is easy with our quality range of disposable P1 & P2 respirator masks. All PROSAFE respirator masks are compliant to AS/NZS 1716:2012
57
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FILTER CLASSES & SELECTION PARTICLE FILTERS Filters are tested for capture efficiency in the laboratory using a salt aerosol challenge agent. Under specified test conditions, the amount of these particles that break through the filter is measured which allows classification of the filter. Under the Standard AS/NZS 1716, there are three classes of particle filters.
Under the Standard AS/NZS 1716, filters used in respirators are required to meet certain performance levels to achieve a classification – This then allows determination of its suitability for use against specific contaminants at various concentrations as explained in AS/NZS 1715.
CLASS
COLOUR
APPLICATION
P1
White
Used for mechanically generated particulates e.g. dust, mists, flour and silica. This class of filter is suitable for relatively ‘large’ particles (>1 micron) released in mechanical operations e.g. sanding, drilling, cutting, sawing and crushing.
P2
White
Used for mechanically and thermally generated particles e.g. welding fume. This class of filters has a higher capture efficiency to be able to effectively filter the many sub micron sized thermally generated particles. The P2 is also the class of filter recommended for specific infection control applications e.g. H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza), Tuberculosis (TB) or other infectious diseases, where they can capture biologically active airborne particles and aerosols under specified conditions.
P3
White
Used for mechanically and thermally generated sub-micron particulates, viruses, bacteria and highly toxic materials e.g. Beryllium, radioactive particles. A P3 filter offers higher protection than a P2 filter however this is only achieved when the P3 filter is used in combination with a full face respirator*.
*NOTE: To achieve these high protection levels, any P3 filter must be worn on a full face mask or as part of a head covering respirator. If P3 filters are fitted to any half face mask, this combination is graded by AS/NZS 1715 to perform only as well as a P2 rated filter on this mask. This is because the ‘weak point’ of the half face mask respirator is the face seal, not the filter performance i.e. in practice most leakage on a half face mask respirator will occur around the seal on the face, not through the filters.
RESPIRATORY FITTING GUIDE Tie back long hair and remove jewellery so that it does not interfere with the seal to the face.
AS/NZS 1716:2012 Respiratory protective devices This standard specifies requirements for respiratory protective devices (respirators) intended to provide, according to type, varying degrees of protection against atmospheres containing substances which may be harmful if inhaled; also, with certain types, to provide protection against atmospheres which may be deficient in oxygen. It does not give guidance on the selection, use and maintenance of respirators. This is covered in AS/NZS 1715.
1 With both straps held on the top panel, place opened respirator in one hand against your face, with the nosepiece across the bridge of your nose.
58
WWW.PROSAFE.COM.AU
Pull the top strap resting it high over the crown of your head. Pull the bottom strap over your head then position it around your neck and below your ears. Straps must not be twisted. Adjust nose and chin panels for a comfortable fit, ensuring panels are not folded in.
The standard also specifies requirements, performance and testing criteria to be observed in the manufacture of respirators. 3
respiratory hazards. As they mix readily with the air we breathe, gases and vapours are readily inhaled and may cause direct damage to the lung tissue e.g. acid gases. Other types (e.g. solvents, pesticides, mercury) can enter the bloodstream via the lungs and can then be transported around the body where they can damage organs like the liver, kidneys and effect the central nervous system and at high concentrations can be lethal.
4
5 Face Fit Check — every time before entering the hazardous area.
Using both hands, mould nose clip to the shape of your nose bridge by pushing inwards while moving your fingertips down both sides of the nosepiece.
RESPIRATORY HAZARDS Your lungs are vital to your health – If hazardous particles reach the lungs they can damage the delicate tissue and cause illness. Your body has some natural defences against airborne particulate hazards but if the contaminant is in a large enough quantity and/or made up of very small particles, these defences may be overcome, resulting in ill health and increased risk of diseases such as occupational asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and cancer. Gases and vapours are other types of
2 Take both straps in your other hand. Hold the respirator under your chin. Pull the straps over your head.
The respirator is correctly worn as shown here.
Cover front of the respirator with both hands taking care not to disturb its fit. When using a valved respirator, inhale sharply. The respirator should collapse slightly indicating a proper seal has been obtained. Then work may proceed.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment This standard sets out the principles of respiratory protection, requirements and recommendations for the selection, use and maintenance of personal Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) in the workplace.
Ensure both panels are fully unfolded to form a cup shape. Bend slightly at the centre of the nose clip.
Be clean shaven. Do not wear with beards or other facial hair that prevent a good seal to the face.
RESPIRATORY STANDARDS In Australia and New Zealand a ‘Duty of Care’ requires all stakeholders to be able to identify hazards in the work environment, quantify the risk and formally (in writing and action) put into place training and controls for the proper selection and ongoing use of respiratory protective equipment.
Pre-stretch around entire length of each strap by pulling at 3cm intervals between both hands.
59
CUPPED RESPIRATORS
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
CUPPED RESPIRATORS P2
P1
All P2 Respiratory masks comply with AS/NZS 1716:2012 and are suitable for a wide range of industries.
Cupped pre-moulded respiratory masks are popular as they fit a variety of face shapes, the conical shape holds sturdy around the nose and mouth, enhancing communication and comfort. HEARING PROTECTION Hearing loss is a preventable occupational hazard, chose your preferred style of earplugs or earmuffs in class 4 or 5 rating to ensure you are protected. All PROSAFE hearing protection products comply with the AS/NZS 1270 Acoustics – hearing protectors standard.

HEARING PROTECTION HEARING PROTECTION STANDARDS
HEARING PROGRAMME
In Australia and New Zealand one of the major areas of workers compensation is industrial hearing loss. Hearing loss tends to occur over time, however is completely preventable.
of noise. It also provides an integrated approach to establishing, implementing and evaluating an occupational noise management program.
Standard AS/NZS 1269.0:2005 provides an overview of the general requirements for occupational noise management. The series deals with noise as it affects hearing, but does not deal with other effects
See SAI Global for more information on AS/NZS 1269 Occupational Noise Management Parts 0 – 4 (Standards Australia).
AS/NZS 1270:2002 ACOUSTICS – HEARING PROTECTORS
Under Standard AS/NZS 1270, hearing protectors are tested across a range of noise frequencies where a SLC80 rating is mathematically calculated. The results are stated as Class which is determined by the SLC80 rating obtained. The test results are found on the packaging of the hearing protector.
FIVE STEP PROGRAMME STEP 1 – NOISE SURVEY Conduct a preliminary noise survey to identify any possible noise hazards.
STEP 2 – DETAILED ASSESSMENT This Standard specifies requirements for the design, materials, and performance of conventional hearing protectors. It also provides guidance on the general requirements for, and the physical and acoustic testing of specialist hearing protectors.
If the preliminary noise survey averages over 84dB over an 8 hour period a detailed assessment is required. A formal noise survey should be carried out by an occupational hygienist or specially trained occupational health nurse. The assessment will: (a) Quantify the amount of noise to which employees are exposed (b) Identify sources of noise
SOUND LEVEL CONVERSION SLC80 THE CLASS SYSTEM
For example, the sound level in a workplace is 104dB(A) (as an average over an eight hour period). The target ‘in ear’ noise level is 80dB(A). To calculate the minimum SLC80 rating required for a hearing protector in this workplace would be:
104DB(A) – 80DB(A) = 24DB(A) The result of 24dB(A) indicates that a SLC80 24dB(A) rated hearing protector is required which, based on the table to the right corresponds to a Class 4.
PROSAFE HEARING PROTECTION IS EITHER RATED CLASS 4 OR CLASS 5
Under the Standard AS/NZS 1270, there is a classification method for the selection of hearing protectors. Once the extent of the noise hazard has been determined by a noise level survey, the user simply applies this to the classification table below to select an appropriate hearing protector. The class system is a simple way to select hearing protection appropriate to the noise exposure. Class

1
10 – 13 dB(A)
90 dB(A)
2
14 – 17 dB(A)
95 dB(A)
(d) Determine appropriate hearing protector needs
STEP 3 – CONTROL Eliminate – If practicable, control noise at source Isolate – Where practicable move noise sources away from employees Minimise – Provide hearing protectors or use enclosures to reduce the amount of noise emitted STEP 4 – HEARING PROTECTORS If hearing protectors are being used as a control, you must consider:
3
18 – 21 dB(A)
100 dB(A)
4
22 – 25 dB(A)
105 dB(A)
1. Staff education as to the need for hearing protectors
5
26 dB(A) or more
110 dB(A)
2. Define hearing protector areas with signage 3. Provide a selection of hearing protectors (not one will fit all)
OVER PROTECTION Wearing hearing protectors that block too much noise (overprotection) has a negative effect. Overprotected workers typically compromise the fit of their protector by pulling the earplug out partway, or lift up the cup of the earmuff to hear instructions from co-workers, maintenance sounds from the machinery, warning signals etc. Audiologists often see more hearing loss in workers who ‘cheat’ on the fit and wear time of their earplugs
4. Issuing hearing protectors to individuals and validation of the fit to the individual user 5. Cleaning and maintenance of hearing protectors
HEARING PROTECTION
SLC stands for Sound Level Conversion; it is a rating defined as the difference between the sound level of the environment in which the hearing protection device is worn, and the sound level reaching the wearer’s ears. The SLC value includes a correction to ensure that the stated degree of noise reduction is obtained on 80% of occasions hence the SLC80 rating.
(c) Help in developing noise control strategies
6. Training and education for people wearing hearing protectors
STEP 5 - MONITORING Monitor the health effects of noise in the workplace (hearing testing) and notify any serious harm (any signs of hearing loss). An occupational hygienist or specially trained occupational health nurse should conduct testing: (a) Before an employee starts work (b) At intervals of no longer than 12 months thereafter (c) Also recommended for employees exiting a business

SAFETY SIGN MATERIALS
In Australia, there are several standards that cover the design and correct use of safety signs to warn of potential safety hazards, provide emergency information and to regulate and instruct individuals in the correct behaviour within specific work environments.
SIGNAGE – TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT – ENVIROMENT PROTECTION
• AS 1319:1994 – Safety signs for the occupational environment • AS 1742:2003 – Manual of uniform traffic control devices • AS 2293:2005 – Emergency escape lighting and exit signs for buildings Safety signs are broken down into the different classifications, based on their function and use. Refer to appropriate Australian Standards and state regulations for more information.

When choosing the size of the sign required for a specific work environment you must take into consideration the available lighting in the area the sign will be located and the viewing distance between the observer and the sign location. AS 1319:1994 states the recommendedminimum size for a symbolic sign is 15mm per metre of viewing distance. Refer to viewing distance guide designed to help you choose the correct size of a sign for a specific work environment. Signs in poor lighting conditions are not easily seen. To improve visibility, it is strongly recommended increasing the size of the sign by 50%.
