Half way through the summer and I am already reminding myself to savor it before we blink and we are talking about Halloween costumes. I have gotten to know so many people in this community over the 10 years I have lived in Lake Nona and I know that we all lead such accomplished and fast paced lives. While at the beach the other day with my two boys, I thought of sharing the importance of digging your bare feet into the ground and “grounding” yourself. A little google research can tell you what the benefits are. Like, decreased inflammation and pain in your body.
Graphic Design Renée Blair Blair Creative Group, Inc.
Although a day at the beach with a 5 and a 2 year old is not a relaxing time at all, I did find time to ground myself and release any toxic energy that had seeped into my body over the last few weeks. As we maintain our external image we should not neglect our insides.

“Consumers tell us they want convenient access to healthcare services so it’s easier to take care of themselves and their families,” says Greg Ohe, Orlando Health’s senior vice president for ambulatory services. One key component of Orlando Health’s commitment is to increase and enhance access to quality emergency care by placing a full-service, stand-alone Emergency Room (ER) further into the communities it serves. Opening its doors on June 7, 2021, the Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park, located at 10155 Dowden Rd.,

offers close, convenient emergency care to those who call Lake Nona home, while delivering the same level of care and services as a hospital-campus ER. Having this close-to-home ER brings peace of mind knowing that emergency care is nearby when it’s needed — and removing the stress and delay in care that may occur when having to travel longer distances on congested Central Florida roadways. The Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park is the first phase of a new Orlando Health medical campus in Lake Nona. Situated on a 15-acre site at the corner of Dowden Road and Randal Park Boulevard, the 42,000-square-foot ER offers 24/7 adult and pediatric emergency care with board-certified emergency medicine physicians and an expertly skilled clinical team. training in trauma care. The stateof-the-art facility features a modern yet comfortable design, streamlined efficiency, the latest advanced technology and includes: • 12 treatment rooms • Cardiac/respiratory resuscitation room • Cardiac monitoring • Diagnostic imaging, including CT scan, MRI, ultrasound and X-ray • Full-service laboratory • Ambulance bays • Helipad The ER is able to treat minor and major illnesses and injuries, including heart attack, stroke and trauma. If hospital admission is needed, the medical staff can quickly arrange for transfer — via ambulance or helicopter with Orlando Health’s Air Care Team — to Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital or the downtown campus that includes Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center as well as Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies to provide the level and specialty area of care needed. And for minor emergencies, online scheduling is available so you can wait in the comfort of home until your scheduled time to be seen.
Room to Grow
Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park is part of a multiphase plan that addresses the current and future healthcare needs of the Lake Nona area. The ER occupies the first floor of a three-story building. The remaining two floors have been shelled out to allow for future expansion as a medical pavilion that can house physician offices and specialty services as community healthcare needs dictate. “This location fills an immediate need for easy access to emergency
care, and it creates an anchor for additional Orlando Health services in the community,” says Thibaut van Marcke, senior vice president of Orlando Health Southeast Region and president of Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital. “This campus is designed to give us the flexibility to expand and grow as the area continues to grow.” Future plans that Lake Nona residents can look forward to include specialty physician, diagnostic and treatment services, such as cardiology, women’s services and pediatric specialties, as well as orthopedics and cancer care.
The Convenience of Comprehensive Healthcare
Orlando Health is a comprehensive healthcare system, offering more than 800 services and specialties throughout Central Florida. With Orlando Health’s entry into the Lake Nona community, families will have easier, more convenient access to many of these services. As the campus moves into the next phases, patients who need to travel to another Orlando Health facility for further care, such as surgery, may be able to schedule their preliminary or follow-up appointments at the Randal Park location. This type of accessibility is an asset to the people of Lake Nona, as well as an attractive benefit to future residents, businesses and visitors. Though not immediately in the planning, the campus also allows space for the addition of a hospital should that become a need for the area.
A Strong Relationship that Benefits the Region
Planning and collaboration have been essential to this ongoing project from the beginning. Orlando Health and the Lake Nona community have been working together to
ensure this project addresses the needs of the community now and for decades to come. “We have welcomed the support of the community,” says van Marcke. “This strong working relationship has played an important role in developing this medical campus. We look forward to continuing to work with community leaders and to engage with local organization and residents as a valued community partner through education, outreach and other opportunities.” This partnership was evident at Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park’s recent drive-through open house on May 22. As guests followed a designated route through Dr. Reynald Lamarre the campus, enjoying complimentary giveaways and socially distant tours of the Orlando Health Air Care helicopter and Orlando Health Arnold Palmer pediatric ambulance, they were also treated to a viewing of artwork from talented student artists from Sun Blaze Elementary School, Eagle Creek Elementary School and Moss Park Elementary School. l

BRAIN SURGERY BREAKTHROUGH BY DANIA BOUSTANY
U
CF Lake Nona Medical Center has announced that it will be the first Hospital in Central Florida to offer a cutting-edge treatment for essential tremor and tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease unable to be controlled with medication, scalpel-free!
One of the hospital’s first patients, Jen Stratton, underwent the procedure on June 4th. Stratton was diagnosed with an essential tremor at six years old. While she has made accommodations for the tremor, it has presented many unique struggles for her throughout her personal and professional journey. After successfully completing her procedure, she is ready to share her story with the public to tell others with the same debilitating condition that there is hope. “For patients who qualify, MR-guided focused ultrasound provides an incisionless treatment option, performed on an outpatient basis with short recovery time and often immediate results,” said Dr. Nizam Razack, MD, JD, FAANS, FACS, neurosurgeon at UCF Lake Nona Medical Center. “Not only are we the first hospital in Central Florida to offer focused ultrasound for essential tremor, we’re also one of the very few centers nationally capable of providing the procedure. By expanding access to this treatment here in our region, we can help restore independence and provide relief for individuals suffering from debilitating and progressive tremors.” Nearly 10 million Americans are estimated to have Essential tremor (ET), which is 10 times the number of people living with Parkinson’s disease. disease characterized by tremor, most often of the hands or arms, which can make daily activities challenging. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this procedure in 2016 as an alternative to deep brain stimulation (DBS), a more invasive form of treatment. MR-guided focused ultrasound benefits include: Substantial and nearly instant reduction in hand tremors, reduced risk of infection, as the outpatient procedure is incisionless, quicker recovery time with patients returning to daily activities within days. “When we opened UCF Lake Nona Medical Center in March, we made a commitment to the residents of Lake Nona and surrounding communities to not only increase access to excellent, patient-centered care in the region, but also to bring innovative technology, treatments and tools to Greater Orlando,” said Wendy Brandon, CEO of UCF Lake Nona Medical Center. “The launch of our incisionless brain surgery program demonstrates that commitment. We are proud to bring this revolutionary procedure to Central Florida and look forward to the tremendous impact it will have on improving the lives of our patients.” l To learn more, please visit ucflakenonamedicalcenter.com/service/neurological-services

fter living through a traumatic experience of her first child becoming a near-drowning victim, UCF Lake Nona Medical Center Director of Women’s Services Sally Robertson shares her personal story and why she spends her life dedicated to caring for babies, women, and healthcare workers. Her little boy recovered, and Sally was forever indebted to the caregivers who not only brought her son through the experience, but also cared for her family so tenderly. “The nurses took great care of him, and even better care of me. The whole time I was there with him, I kept thinking this is what I want to do for other people.” When her youngest child went to first grade, Sally went back to school earning her nursing degree at 39. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in 2010, and began as a director in Labor & Delivery in 2011. “I love that while I manage people, I still impact every single patient that is having a baby, and every single team member.”
Sally Robertson
As the hospital recently welcomed its 100th baby, it continues to exceed expectations in number of deliveries, with only 11 births projected the first month, and the actual number quadruple that figure. The threemonth-old UCF Lake Nona Medical Center is rapidly becoming a popular baby place in Central Florida, and Sally leads the Family Birthing Unit, providing leadership to the team, serving patients and families, and welcoming every baby born.
The birthing unit features include private labor, delivery and recovery family birthing suites, neonatologists available 24/7 through Nemours Children’s Hospital, OB hospitalists on-site 24/7, and a dedicated OR for C-sections. Additional patient amenities for new moms include birthing classes, a celebration meal, baby gift and to-go meal provided at discharge. The hospital also offers professional baby photography and mobile spa services on request. “We don’t just deliver babies in our hospital; we take care of women at all ages and stages.” While you can find Sally at UCF Lake Nona Medical Center every day helping welcome Lake Nona’s newest residents, her oldest son who inspired her career journey has followed closely in Mom’s footsteps, and now works as an Emergency Department Nurse. l To learn more, please visit ucflakenonamedicalcenter.com/ service/maternity-services

young Clark Kent, Diana Prince and Bruce Wayne have entered the Ducard Academy, which is an award-winning middle school for young superheroes. The trio catches on quickly that things are askew at their new school. In addition to a bully out for a fight, a gang of misfits roam the halls looking for trouble and something shifty about the guidance counselor, they must remember to keep their secret identities concealed. If you are a superhero fan like me, you will love this book. It is a graphic novel that tells the story of three heroes navigating middle school while trying to remain model students. Written in the form of texts, speech bubbles, memos and fantastic artwork, this is not a daunting read and will appeal to a wide range of ages. Once your kiddo falls in love with this one, get ready to slide book two, Fort Solitude, into his or her hands. It features guest appearances by Aquaman, Harley Quinn, the Flash and more. There are five books in all: Study Hall of Justice, Fort Solitude, Detention of Doom, Science Fair Crisis and Field Trip Disaster. I recommend all of them for a great summer series that will get your children hooked on reading. l

Clever Tips and Genius Ideas for an Easier, More Enjoyable Life
I
am a huge Martha Stewart fan, and when she comes out with a new book, I am all over it. This book is a compilation of some of the best and brightest ideas along with helpful suggestions from her popular magazine Martha Stewart Living. Martha refers to these tips and tricks as “Good Things,” and this book is packed full of them. The information is presented in an easy-to-follow format, and everything is organized into six different categories: decorating, homekeeping, organizing, cooking, entertaining and celebrating. In the decorating section, readers will be inspired to use wallpaper and clear water-based varnish to add a pop of color for the risers on their stairwells or create indoor plant stands with metal tomato cages and some metallic spray paint. The celebrating section is my favorite, as Martha takes readers on a tour through all the major holidays with suggested twists on holiday traditions such as the Passover plate or jazzing up the kids’ table at Thanksgiving. The cooking and entertaining section will have you eager to invite friends over to try your new three-ingredient ideas served on a stunning table setting complete with a floral table runner and matching place cards. This book makes a fabulous addition to every household, and with its colorful and beautiful photos is the perfect coffee-table book to proudly display in your well-caredfor, elegant-looking abode. Thanks, Martha! l

Summertime WINE SPRITZERS S BY SAMANTHA MONTGOMERY
ummer is here and sipping cocktails poolside is the perfect way to usher in this fabulous season in sunny, beautiful Florida. This month we focus on creating the perfect wine spritzer. Since several countries claim to have originated the concept of adding soda water and bitters to a sparkling wine, we can’t be too sure of where this drink idea developed; however, there was a huge resurgence of the spritzer during the wine-cooler craze in the eighties.
Wine spritzers are typically three parts wine and one part soda water. Since the wine will be diluted with soda water, adding bitters to the cocktail will add another dimension of taste. Bitters used to be a common bar mixer that was simply added to any number of drinks to elevate the flavor; fast forward to today and bitters have come a long way. There are intricate concoctions available that have a variety of tastes by using different spices, herbs and even roots that are slowly distilled in a base and then boiled down to a concentrate. A small dash in a drink can go an exceptionally long way.
12 N O N A M A G A Z I N E | V O L U M E 2 • I S S U E 4
While many wine aficionados are not fans of diluting a perfectly good wine, many hostesses are looking to stretch their alcohol budget, and this is one way to do that. Serving spritzers at a party will not only conserve your wine supply while entertaining, but also this cocktail is light on calories and can be rather versatile. If you want to add a sweet garnish of fruit to your recipe, make sure to choose a red or white wine that is dry. The dry wine will offset the sweetness from adding something such as frozen raspberries as your garnish.
This beverage is best served when cold, so chilling the glasses beforehand is a great idea. Freezing the garnishes is another tip as well as making sure the wine and soda water spend the night before the party in the fridge. Making this a few hours before the party in a large pitcher will give you one less thing to think about before the guests arrive. Try this simple yet elegant recipe at your next summer gathering. Once you get the hang of making this easy cocktail, you will want to experiment with other flavors and garnishes. l
SAMANTHA’S CITRUS SPRITZER
• One chilled bottle of Tiny Umbrellas Pinot Grigio • Two cups of chilled soda water • One dash of Fee Brothers Grapefruit Bitters • One cup of ice • One ruby-red grapefruit sliced into quarters and frozen overnight • A few sprigs of fresh mint Mix the first-four ingredients together in a large serving pitcher. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with a quarter slice of frozen grapefruit and a mint leaf.

STAY HYDRATED with IV Vitamin Therapy BY MAXINE SUDARMA

smattering of offerings available, Dr. Santana has created cocktails that combat aches, jet lag, hangovers, headaches, asthma and anxiety. There are also cocktails for pre- and post-surgery, pregnancy, energy and post-bariatric surgery.
o you ever feel dehydrated from not drinking enough water or from the Florida heat? Do you feel like your supplements are not working well? Do you have a hangover that you can't fight off? Trying to lose a few more pounds?
Prospective clients can meet for a free consultation with the staff at the Hydration Squad to discuss their health concerns and decide which cocktail is the right one.
The Hydration Squad was created by Dr. Lis Santana who is a board-certified Anesthesiologist and pain-medicine physician. After several years of treating patients, Dr. Santana noticed that most Americans suffer from dehydration; a poor diet of foods lacking in healthy nutrients and toxins that enter our bodies through the environment that we live in. Factor in that most of us do not get the proper amount of sleep, exercise or movement in our daily schedule and you end up with a large population of people who are tired, overweight and have overall poor health. According to Dr. Santana, “More than 40 percent of Americans are deficient in vitamin B12, D and several other important vitamins.” She asked herself, what can we do to make our body feel better? The answer she came up with was simple: hydration. “Through an IV, people can get hydrated, receive amino acids, electrolytes, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.” The process takes anywhere from thirty minutes

to an hour and clients can come into the office or the practice can come to the client. Most people do not realize that when they take vitamins orally, they only receive about 20 percent of the active nutrients into their bloodstream. When a client receives nutrient-rich vitamins intravenously, their body will absorb one hundred percent of the vitamins. The beauty of this treatment according to Dr. Santana is that, “There are no side effects and no downtime.” Dr. Lis Santana has also created very specific “cocktails” to treat many different ailments. There is something for everyone! Some of the more popular ones are the beauty cocktail, immunity cocktail and skinny cocktail. Clients can choose from several different options to meet their specific needs, and they are all listed on their website, but to show you a
As mentioned before, one of the more popular ones to choose from is the slim cocktail. This is immediately followed up with a skinny shot. After that, clients will come in to receive a weekly shot to help them stay trim and fit. A nurse will take measurements at each of these visits to show the progress as well as provide counsel and answer any questions. They will also check-in with clients to make sure they are getting a healthy amount of movement and making wise food choices. Dr. Santana says, “Exercise and good nutrition goes a long way. If the shots are repeated weekly with exercise, you will see results. Some have lost up to four inches in one week. I want people to feel better and see results. It is my passion to make people feel good and that makes me feel good.” l For more information, visit www.hydrationsquad.com or call 407.810.3933. By appointment only. See more photos on page 20.
