PUBLISHER & CEO

Welcome to the May 2022 edition of Harmony Life Magazine. In case you don’t know we also run the Harmony Residents Facebook page. The original Harmony Residents Forum was called Harmony Open Forum and was designed to be a place of free speech where very little admin interaction would take place. Since taking over the group it’s been a challenge to keep the forum civil and yet open at the same time. As soon as a controversial issue arises, our message boxes explode with calls for censorship or removal of “offending” individuals, etc.

Gator Week® Celebration Returns to Wild Florida®

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year again at Wild Florida. May 23–28, Wild Florida will host Gator Week and offer free Gator Park admission to guests who donate any amount toward our Wild Florida Scholarship Fund for Osceola County students. Additionally, as the founders of National Alligator Day on May 29th, Wild Florida will also celebrate this special day at the end of Gator Week. Years ago Wild Florida noticed how alligators are often characterized as monstrous swamp killers and fear of these animals has driven many myths and nightmares about their behavior. Gator Week at Wild Florida is dedicated to educating guests about alligators, debunking common myths and developing a more positive reputation for these reptiles.

Wild Florida’s reptile handling team, deemed “the Croc Squad®”, has been dreaming up educational ideas and myth-busting activities all year in preparation for this week. Gator jump-a-thons, eating contests and of course, who has the best Crocs (shoes), are among the activities planned. Be sure to follow Wild Florida on social media for updates, fun polls, educational tidbits and myth-busting stories. Also, check out www.GatorWeek.com for the full schedule of events. While the focus of Gator Week is to educate guests on Florida’s beloved reptile, the team is focused on raising funds for a good cause, the Wild Florida Scholarship Fund. Gator Park admission is free to everyone who brings a cash donation to the scholarship fund May 23–28. Learn more about Wild Florida’s other adventures at WildFL.com. 2 Harmony Life Magazine l May 2022

Sam Haught, co-owner of Wild Florida, announced, “Gator Week is back at full strength this year. We’re excited to feature family-friendly activities but with a few new twists. Our goal is to shine a different light on these incredible animals and hope our guests walk away with a greater appreciation for them.”

Wild Florida Airboats, Drive-thru Safari & Gator Park, which opened on Lake Cypress in Kenansville in 2010, focuses on educating individuals about Central Florida’s natural resources. The Wild Florida team is dedicated to protecting, conserving and enhancing Florida’s diverse ecosystem to ensure that future generations can enjoy the wonders of wild, native Florida. n

NOTES FROM the CHAIR By Teresa Kramer Chair, Harmony Community Development District

Invasive Species: Coming to an Area Near You?

How Can You Help?

These invasive plants not only inhabit our Conservation Areas, but have also cropped up in Harmony’s central landscape areas as well as the landscape beds and natural areas around our homes. Please be on the lookout for these plants and destroy them if you find them in your landscaping. Each plant requires special handling when removing so that they do not further spread throughout Harmony. For more information on identification and treatment please go to https://plants.ifas.ufl.edu and search the Plant Directory.

Old World Climbing Fern

This plant likes to keep its feet wet, so it is mainly found growing in wet areas. If you have an area in your landscaping that stays wet most of the year, this invasive may take root near you. It has recently been found in and around several of the homes in the Estates. This plant needs to be handled with great care as it produces millions of microscopic spores on each leaflet (edges curl when fruiting) and these spores spread far and wide by the slightest breeze, by attaching to your clothes, and even by a minor rain shower. Small plants can be pulled, but you must be sure you get all of the roots. This plant will grow back from even the smallest root piece. If you find a taller vine on your property, IFAS recommends that you cut a foot long section of the vine out about 3 feet above the ground, leaving the vine above the cut in the tree to die and spraying the lower, rooted section with a product containing glyphosate. This spray treatment will need to be repeated every six months 4 Harmony Life Magazine l May 2022

for two years. Please remember to place any plant material you remove in a plastic bag that you tape closed and dispose of in the garbage, not your yard waste.

Brazilian Pepper

Brazilian Pepper is a shrub/tree that can be found in both upland and wetland areas. It can be seen growing at the western end of the houses on Five Oaks Drive, just before the intersection with Schoolhouse Road. Brazilian pepper is a member of the same plant family as poison ivy and poison oak. The seeds develop in the winter and show in December through March as bright red clusters. They are spread by birds and mammals eating them. This tree shades out native species, provides poor habitat, and its sap is toxic. Burning of any part of the tree will release a noxious gas that causes respiratory tract inflammation. Very small plants can be pulled up, but again, be sure to get all of the roots or the plant will regrow. Larger plants can be cut and removed if the roots are dug up, but this can be dangerous due to skin contact with the sap. Chemical application has been the preferred method of treatment, but new biological controls with Brazilian peppertree thrips has proven successful and is being provided for public lands in South Florida. Hopefully, it will be available here in Osceola in the near future.

Caesar’s Weed

This plant grows in the uplands and has recently been spotted growing in a neighbor’s planter bed. It has a beautiful purple flower that looks like a miniature hibiscus, but don’t let that fool you. Its seeds are encased in a burrs that will cover your clothes if you get too close. That’s how it spreads. These burrs hitch a ride on your pet, your golf cart, or on your clothes and then get dropped off at other places in Harmony. It spreads rapidly and can grow to 7 feet in height in the first year. These plants can be pulled up by hand, but it is recommended that you gather all the burrs and bag them up before pulling to prevent spreading them.

F

or several years now, the Harmony CDD Field Services staff have been treating the invasive species that have moved north from warmer climates and into our Conservation Areas. The main target has been the Old World Climbing Fern. But this is not the only invasive species that we need to treat and control; we also have Brazilian Pepper, Caesar’s Weed, and Cogon Grass, to name the most prevalent. Unfortunately, these plants are spreading faster that the Field Services staff can treat them, so at our April CDD meeting, the Board contracted with Aquatic Weed Management, Inc. to conduct a year long invasive weed clean up of our Conservation Areas and Buffers. Treatments will be conducted in all Harmony owned Conservation Areas three different times throughout the year, resulting in eradication of at least 90% of the Class 1 and 2 invasives. Following this intensive treatment program, our Field Services staff will resume maintenance treatments to ensure that these invasive plants are controlled.

here in Harmony. Treatment requires that it be sprayed with glyphosate, cut very short to observe any new growth from the rhizomes and then sprayed again and again. Areas of growth are showing up in our open grassy areas. We will prominently mark these areas and rope them off when they are being treated, so please keep your pets and kids away from these areas. Like the Old World Climbing Fern, they grow by rhizomes and any small piece of root will create an entirely new plant, so they can not be pulled or dug.

Cogon Grass

As you drive up and down US 192, you have probably noticed the bright yellow-green stands of thick bladed grass that has recently shown up in the median and right-of-way. It sometimes has a very fluffy looking seed head waving in the breeze. If you pull off a blade of this perennial grass, you will find that the mid-rib is not in the center, but offset to one side. When you stroke the blade it will feel smooth in one direction, but reverse directions and you will feel its teeth. This invasive is a bane to our ranching neighbors and is now starting to plaque Harmony. It is considered one of the worst invasive plants in the world and, unfortunately, it is

If you see something in Harmony that needs to be addressed, please let us know. Whether it is a gushing sprinkler head, a fallen tree, or a broken bench, please report what you see by emailing a picture or description with a location to CDDmaintenance@Inframark.com. Please put “Harmony” in the subject line. By doing so, these problems can be fixed much faster than if you just post them to Facebook. Thank you for helping us to keep Harmony looking good! n

DID YOU KNOW? By Beth Johnson, M.Ed. Harmony Nature & Animal Committee Member

WHAT IS

GEOCACHING?

D

id you know that Harmony and its surrounding public spaces are great for geocaching? Geocaching is an exciting outdoor game that requires participants to use a global positioning system (GPS) in order to find a hidden treasure, otherwise known as a cache. The cache contains little surprises that delight participants, young and old. If you enjoy the outdoors and adventure seeking, then geocaching is an easy and exciting activity for you and your family. Geocachers use a GPS-enabled app to locate the latitude and longitude (coordinates) of a hidden cache. The cache will be in a waterproof container that is hidden, but not buried, in the general area of the coordinates. One of the first caches my children and I found was hidden along the fenceline behind Publix on Narcoossee Rd. and U.S. 192, but most caches require some walking on foot in natural areas. There are a ton of other caches hidden all around Lake Lizzie and some secret spots in Harmony Main as well.

In order to geocache, you will need the following items: 1. An iOS or Android phone or tablet 2. A geocaching app 3. SWAG for trading caches 4. Extra logbooks 5. A pen Optional items to bring include snacks, bottled water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Sometimes geocaching can take 15 minutes and sometimes it can take a couple hours depending on how far your outdoor trekking adventure takes you. There are many different apps you can use to find these geocaches around our local community. According to Lifewire.com, the five best apps for geocaching are Geocaching (this is the app my family uses), Cachly, c.geo, GeoCaches, and GeoCache Placer. Availability varies based on whether you are an iOS or Android user.

What is SWAG? It stands for Stuff We All Get and it’s a huge part of the fun. Once you discover your cache, you can trade out the items in it for items that you would like to leave behind for future geocachers to discover. Keep a bag of tiny trinkets handy for trading out SWAG. Do you have some old birthday guest goodies lying around? Those are perfect items for trading. Some avid geocachers also enjoy creating and leaving behind geocoins for those lucky enough to find them. The number one rule of geocaching is to always put the cache back exactly how you found it so that other people can have a chance to find it. Don’t forget to seal it properly so that water doesn’t leak in, and take the opportunity to clean up any trash that may have been left behind as well. Have fun and we hope to cache you outside! n 6 Harmony Life Magazine l May 2022

Once you have found the cache, it will include a log book where you can add your name. If the log book has been lost or damaged, you can replace it with your own. A log book can be as simple as index cards stapled together or a tiny, wirebound notebook. You can also record your findings on your geocaching app.

Our priority is that your experience is an exceptional one from start to finish and that you feel welcome and a part of our Kisselback family when you leave. Whether you are stopping by our showroom, taking a test drive, or visiting our service department, we want to make your visit comfortable, efficient and affordable.

One of a Kind! HHHHH

“FANTASTIC experience! My salesman, Ross, was extremely helpful in all aspects. He was knowledgeable and was very communicative throughout the process. I have been to many dealers and never felt as comfortable as I did at Kisselback, they are absolutely one of a kind. From their customer service experience to their purchase process. I did not feel pressured at all while I test drove the truck I purchased. They made sure the truck was ready to hit the road! They have definitely gained my business in the future. A1 service, amazing employees! Thank you!” — Sathya M.

Excellent Customer Service! HHHHH

“Your customer service and advice is excellent; it was super fast. Thanks to our advisor Mr. Elías Mouzayak for his quality of service when choosing my recommended truck.” — Fabiola P.

Highly Recommend! HHHHH

“Brian Rinehart has been my salesman for two vehicles now and I would recommend him and Kisselback highly. Lots of dealerships to choose from in Central Florida but Brian at Kisselback treats me like I matter. I don’t get the run around for pricing or financing. They say what they mean and follow through as promised. This last purchase was for a new vehicle for my company. The first time we came to Kisselback was because they had the right vehicle at the right price for us. The reason I came back to Kisselback, and Brian specifically, was because of his character and how he and the dealership treated me.” — Doug S.

Will Definitely be Back! HHHHH

“Had a tight schedule and Luis and Justin got me in and out with plenty of time to spare and were straight forward about everything. Would definitely be back.” — Derek R.

WHY, HELLO SUMMER!

By Stephanie Milfeld Owner, Z and Q – A Children's Boutique

M

aybe I am jumping the gun just a LITTLE bit but in all fairness, Memorial Day is this month and that is the official start to summer—so there we go, basically SUMMER! With that said, let’s talk about Summer—and I’m not talking about how outrageous summer camp prices are (because holy moly, what is up with that?)—I’m talking about the annual pep talk. Moms, I am talking to you.Your kids love that you are spending time with them so stop thinking about what Kathy thinks of you in your swimsuit at the pool and enjoy the time with your friends and family because that is truly what matters. Wear what you want to wear and have fun, nobody is as focused on the shape of your body as you are. Also if you didn’t know, May is Skin Cancer/ Melanoma Awareness month (along with American Cheese month–who knew?). So while we all love to soak up the sunshine this summer, make sure to grab a hat, sunglasses, put on that sunscreen and stay in the shade when possible, and go get your yearly dermatologist check-up! It’s too easy for something that looks like a freckle on your foot to be something more. Also, if you are looking for something for your kids to do this summer, check out the YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS market in Downtown St. Cloud. Free to register and it’s for vendors ages 21 and younger giving your youth the opportunity to shine while learning great lessons with money. Register at bit.ly/summermarket2022.
