A MESSAGE FROM

COLETTE AND CATHIE

W

elcome to the THIRD edition of our IJY magazine. Our magazine focuses on local businesses, studios and people! We hope you enjoy reading about the topics we’ve chosen for our Spring/Summer issue, and we also thank our guest writers, Mojka Renaud, A.P., LN, Nydia Marrero, Abby Green and Dr. Brooke Stuart. All are local yogis, holistic experts, and/or business owners! We have articles that cover a WIDE range of topics—from: Eco-estrogens, and how to protect yourself…to what to do before you sell your house… to what to do after you buy your house…to using Essential Oils…to the health benefits of Ballroom dancing…and also how Mindfulness has helped the lives of “at-risk” youth in Central Florida. Enjoy!!! Also—check out our “Look Who’s Doing Yoga” pictorial! We received many WONDERFUL photos in our cover photo contest making it VERY difficult to choose just one! Therefore, we added many of the photos to this pictorial. However, without further ado…the “grand prize” winner of the cover contest is (drumroll)…Tymi Howard! Tymi’s incredible pose in front of one of Downtown Orlando’s recognizable plazas definitely caught our attention! Read more about Tymi in the sidebar to the right. This year, within the “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival, we are holding “It’s Just One Moment.” We are hoping to create Central Florida’s largest group meditation, by gathering together and learning a simple, yet effective, 3-minute mediation you can use anytime! And lastly, the reason our magazine was created, is to support the “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival. The Festival is the only donation-based yoga festival in Florida. There is no ticket required to attend our festival. However, we highly recommend that you make a tax-deductible donation, benefitting “New Hope for Kids. Since 1996, New Hope for Kids has provided support and hope for Central Florida children and families during some of the most stressful and challenging times of their lives. Our Festivals raise funds for New Hope and help support their programs in helping grieving children navigate the death of a loved one, and also

COMMUNITY

THE HEALING POWER OF

COMMUNITY BY DR. BROOKE STUART

H

aving a community, or a group of people that come together for the betterment of all, is a fundamental key to health and well-being. There is power in community, where we are able to connect, join together, uplift and awaken to each other through the power that lies within. Being part of a group energy through a team, yoga class, meetup group, church, sporting event, service project or any other empowered collective has been proven to have a myriad of healing psychological and physiological benefits ranging from the alleviation of distress, depression, addictive behavior, inflammation, insomnia, heart disease and a number of other broad spectrum disease states. It’s the perfect way to collaborate, increase awareness, and share experiences while giving and receiving support. At times, it may seem easier to retreat into isolation. However, these moments may be the most important times to extend your reach into a new yoga class, a supportive community or into the office of an enlightened professional. In this tech-driven age, it is easier than ever to get caught up in an unfulfilling type of pseudo connection. Here, it is all too easy to seek validation through external metrics, feeling even more isolated and alone behind the guise of a screen. However, it is also easier than ever to connect with old friends, meet new people, join empowering groups and find events that resonate with

you— like the “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival’s – It’s Just One Moment Meditation. It’s all about perception, intention and choice, and the internet can amplify and affirm both sides and what we believe to be true. As Aristotle said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” and in this day and age, when it is all too easy to close ourselves off and look down, I encourage you to look up, reach out, engage, extend a hand and to be in community. I encourage you to acknowledge the next person that crosses your path, smile, take an extra moment to hold the door, make some feel comfortable in a potentially awkward situation and be kind—because you never know how your presence can impact that one life and each and every experience you encounter. It starts with you. So tap in, take it in, add value and show up because within community, you just may find that you come home to yourself.

REAL ESTATE

ZEN TIPS

A Mindful Approach to Your Real Estate Needs

BY ZEN LIVING REALTY

“T

hey” say there are 7 tips to follow to lead a more “Zen” lifestyle. The tips are: 1-Rise early; 2- Exercise; 3-Declutter; 4-Take a Breather; 5-Meditate; 6-Treat Yourself; 7- Don’t Neglect Shut-Eye. Well, since we are a Realty company, we thought we’d stick with what we know best!

MARIE KONDO YOUR LIFE

We are sure your house is nothing like “Hoarders”, but just in case you would like some tips on decluttering your home— whether to prepare it to put on the market by getting it ready for a staging company, or just to have a more peaceful existence—we are here to help. Take these steps to clear out the clutter in your life. You may just wind up transforming your home!

Your house is where you get to build your life with your family. Start by thanking your home for providing shelter.

There’s a great reason the KonMari Method has become a craze; it’s a simple way of helping you decide what is—and what isn’t—important to you. Follow these steps to get started on “Marie Kondo”-ing your own home.

Be Thankful

Pile It Up

Going room-by-room, pile things up by category. For example, put all of your clothing in one place. This will help you visualize how much of each item you have.

8 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | SPRING/SUMMER 2020

Does it Spark Joy?

Item-by-item, ask yourself if it sparks joy in your life. If it does, then it’s not a big deal to keep it. If it doesn’t, get rid of it. Don’t keep things just to keep things. This is what causes clutter to pile up. Imagine Marie Kondo standing over you while you are clearing out the “spare room” that you’d like to turn into a guest room. Is your collection of baseball cards from the 1990s still sparking joy in your life? The answer is probably “no.” Ask that question on every item, and if the answer is “no”, it is a great way to shed some belongings.

Stand Things Up

After you’ve decided what sparks joy and what doesn’t, it’s time to find a home for

everything. Hang up or fold clothes, and give each item its own spot. This way, your letter opener doesn’t just take up space on the counter (and eventually get misplaced); it goes in your brand new, dedicated stationary drawer.

in the laundry room? Use this category for anything you want to keep and desperately needs to be put away.

Recycle

Think about your junk drawer. Most likely, it’s everything crammed into one spot. Tiny boxes can help organize miscellaneous items.

Yes, you were going to read the newspaper from three weeks ago, but now you have four more issues to catch up on. Toss any newspaper, plastic, glass, or paper into this category.

Organize by Size

Fix or Mend

Tiny Boxes

If you can’t prop things up so that you can see them, organize them by size. This makes it easy to know exactly where in the closet or drawer you need to be looking for something.

DECLUTTERING IN NO TIME

Sometimes you just need to declutter fast. Simplify your decluttering method into five different categories. Get a bin or basket for each category, and clearly label to its corresponding category to make decluttering go even faster. To keep things from getting overwhelming, take it one room at a time, and clean out your baskets at the end of each room.

Put Away

Honestly, how did the cheese grater end up

That broken button or dirty pair of shoes can be tossed into this bin. Instead of letting the stuff you’ve been meaning to do pile up, keep it in one place to come back to at another time.

Trash

Some things are simply trash. Use this category to get rid of anything you don’t want to keep and cannot be donated or recycled.

Donate

You may not need three copies of the same book, but your library might! Toss any items that you want to get rid of, but are in good condition into this category.

De-cluttering and creating beautiful living spaces in your home is the first step towards Zen living. Attending the “It’s Just Yoga” Festival can help with the other steps! Have fun and enjoy!

KYLE FOR KARMA MINDFULNESS PROGRAM HELPING CENTRAL FLORIDA'S AT-RISK YOUTHS

BY CATHIE K.

I sat down with Kyle Gonzalez, “the friend of a friend,” to interview Kyle for IJY Magazine and learn about her work with “Kula for Karma” at the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center (JDC). I left with a deep appreciation for her journey, her work with “at-risk” kids at Boone High School, and how “Kula for Karma” can make a difference. “Kula for Karma” was founded in New Jersey in 2007. The organization’s mission is “to bring therapeutic yoga, meditation, and stress management programs to those recovering from mental health, trauma, and addiction challenges.” Several years ago, the Superintendent of the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center, Major Adrian Mathena, sought out “Kula for Karma” to try 10 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | SPRING/SUMMER 2020

A

a long-time resident of South Orlando, I drive by the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center several times a day, if not more. Many times, I rush by, not even thinking about the facility being there. But, other times, especially when I’m at the light, right in front of the building, I wonder how the kids (yes, KIDS) are doing inside. Well, now I know, that thanks to Kyle Gonzalez, a Boone High School teacher, and yoga instructor for the organization “Kula for Karma,” some of them are learning ways to deal with their anxiety and anger.

and make a difference for the youth at the JDC. Kyle teaches Yin yoga to 8 boys from the Honors’ Unit. (A different instructor teaches 8 girls from their Honors’ Unit.) In order to be a member of the class, the child has to have earned privileges based on good behavior. Kyle’s classes do not have a static population, as the children move in and out of the JDC. However, she has had students as young as 11, all the way up to 18 years of age. Kyle follows the “hands on” assists taught by Baron Baptiste. She wants to make sure her students feel safe, at least while they are in her class, by experiencing the power of the human touch. The JDC provides mats, blocks, bolsters, pillows and towels. Kyle provides stability by being there for them every week. She teaches them yoga, just like any other instructor teaches their class, but there is always a guard from the JDC there, supervising. Kyle wants to teach her students to have a tool to deal with anger, anxiety and depression, by connecting with their physical body. Whether it’s the supine twist, which helps relieve stored tension, or Shavasana, the overall energy of her class, beginning to end, is “calm.” Kyle ends her class with a Shavasana assist, using patchouli oil. (Patchouli oil has the reputation of being a grounding, soothing, and peaceinducing oil.) She touches each student three times with the oil, ending the class in a very calm, soothing manner. Although there is not statistical data available to show what a difference “Kula for Karma” makes at the JDC, the proof is in the day to day living at the center. And, one of the unspoken goals is for the students to use these methods in their daily lives so they can better deal with situations in their lives as they return home.

“Introducing Kula for Karma inside the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention brought therapeutic yoga, meditation, and stress management techniques to youth dealing with a variety of challenges including behavioral, mental health, trauma, and addiction. Kula for Karma assisted in reducing incidents and contributed to a calmer atmosphere for both youth and staff.” — Major Adrian Mathena of the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center

Kyle Gonzalez has been a teacher at Boone HS, teaching “at-risk” students since 1999. Since the Parkland High School shooting, she started doing 2 minutes of silent meditation at the start of each of her classes. All students have to surrender their cell phones, and just be present and meditate. Kyle is helping her students unwind and cope in this world of social media and “Instagram Reality” versus REAL reality. Check out her blogs on “thisyogimadre. com” for more insight into her journey, and how she became a yoga teacher.

acteristics in animals that are exposed to it. Lake Apopka, for example, is adjacent to an EPA Superfund site contaminated with dicofol and DDT. Both of these pesticides are known as estrogen mimics. University of Georgia researchers completed a study on alligators in Lake Apopka. Yes, THAT Lake Apopka, which is less than 25 miles from Lake Eola! At six months of age, female alligators from Lake Apopka had plasma estrogen concentrations almost two times greater than normal females. The plasma testosterone levels of male alligators were more than 3 times lower than in an adjacent lake. In another case, two Lake Apopka alligators without penises were identified as females but later observed to have testes! The reason why University of Georgia researched the lake is because abnormalities in the ovaries of these alligators are similar to the conditions seen in the ovaries of women suffering from reproductive issues.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

I

am excited to give you a resolution that will make the most dramatic impact on your health in the future. This one affects everybody in the most insidious ways: ECOESTROGENS. They are environmental estrogens that are in every food we eat, milk or water that we drink. They are in birth control pills, plastics and environmental pesticides. Concern over environmental estrogen is so great that in 1999, the Environmental Protection Agency

(U.S. EPA 1989 toxin released inventory) Inventory National Report

(EPA) initiated a screening and testing program to identify the potential endocrinesystem impact of the 87,000 chemicals in commercial use. Environmental chemicals are called Ecoestrogens because they have the ability to mimic our own estrogen and enter our cells more efficiently than natural estrogen where they can alter tissue structure of our cells and cause tumor growths and cancer. Because of its estrogenic effect, it causes female char-

• 550,000,000 lbs. of industrial chemicals were dumped into public’s sewage storage. • 1,000,000,000 lbs. of chemical released into the ground. • 1,888,000,000 lbs. of chemicals discharged into surface waters. • 2,400,000,000 lbs. of air emissions • 3,705,670,380 lbs. of chemicals in one year.

Although DDT was banned in 1984 in the United States, 20% of all Florida produce tested, still contained DDT. Breast Cancer is on the rise. How many friends or family do you know that have it in their early forties? According to Dr. Lee, a foremost researcher of natural hormones, Israel banned insecticides for 10 years and their breast cancer rate has declined 50%!

INGESTED TOXINS • In the U.S., we allow over 10,000 chemical additives in our food supply. • The average American consumes: • 14 lbs. of additives per year. • 120 lbs. of sugar. • 8 lbs. of salt. Reference: “Do You Know What Your Patients Eat?” Monograph, E. Cheraskin, W. Ringsdorf, Dept. Oral Med., U. Alabama, 1976

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Eat organic food! Other suggestions: 1. The fats of dairy and meat contain the highest concentration of chemicals. Eat hormone free, antibiotic free meat, organic milk and dairy products (including butter). Meat and dairy have almost 20 times the amount of chemicals as vegetables. 2. Purify your water. Don’t drink water in restaurants or beverages made from it. Ask for bottled water like Evian or Perrier. 3. Stop spraying pesticides outside and inside your home. The fumes linger for weeks and have a direct route through your inhalation into the lungs and to the brain (most of your brain is fats). There are natural pesticide free compa- nies you can choose instead.

4. Replace all your household cleaning chemicals with natural alternatives. 5. Stop contaminating your body with synthetic skin creams and nail polishes, including removers and synthetic hair products. 6. Take your supplements. Vitamin C and Vitamin E have the most notable impact in helping the body to degrade the toxic effect of chemicals, almost ten-fold. Other extremely important nutrients are carnitine, arginine, zinc, selenium, Vitamin B12, glutathione, coenzyme Q10 and high fiber diets. 7. Detoxify your body. Juicing and colonics is a must for everybody! Herbal extracts, such as custom-made homeopathic remedies, are the best from my experience with many patients. 8. Make regular use of DNR Body Soaks or Bentonite Clay baths. 9. Drink lots of water, purified of course. 10. Stop drinking coffee. It is laced with many chemicals and even if it is organic, it causes acidity in the body, which hinders the elimination of chemicals from the tissues. Drink herbal teas, such as green tea or Calli tea, that are astrin- gent and can draw impurities from cells. 11. Read labels. If you don’t know what the ingredients are, avoid it! If you want to save the planet, start with your health first!

ORGANIC — The Better Choice

COMMERCIAL FOOD • Is grown with Synthetic chemical fertilizers which do not provide a full range of minerals. • Sprays with chemical pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides harming both man and earth. • Grows and uses genetically modified substance. • Uses growth hormones in animals. • Adds artificial coloring and preservatives. • Uses antibiotics to combat infection in animals.

ORGANIC FOOD • Tastes better – grown in higher quality soils. • Reduces health risks from chemicals to farm workers, water supplies and consumer. • Contains more nutrients (up to 90% more). • Encourages biodiversity by eliminating the poisoning of beneficial birds, insects, animals and plants. • Creates a healthy microbiome in the soil.

DOES A BODY GOOD!

T

insulin management, fat burning and weight management. What is best of all, it merely requires 5-10 minutes of exercises every other day, or if one desires, daily.

Have you heard of “high intensity, low interval exercise”?

High Intensity, low interval means doing a type of brisk exercise that quickly raises your heart rate and then allows a quick, short recovery by a 1-2-minute rest period. This can be repeated until 5 or 10 minutes are achieved. That completes the exercise. Numerous studies have now shown the tremendous benefits of that type of exercise. Examples of such exercise might be jumping jacks, pushups, sprinting, jump roping as an example.

his magazine promotes not just yoga, but overall health and wellness. A great way to get/stay in shape is DANCE. Instead of just watching other people dance on shows like America’s Got Talent, and Dancing with the Stars, give dancing a try yourself ! It’s a great way to keep your body and mind healthy.

This type of exercise has lately become the most recommended health fitness by top health professionals and fitness trainers to derive the most benefits for cardiovascular fitness, 14 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | SPRING/SUMMER 2020

In Ballroom dancing, once you have accomplished learning a few basic steps in one or more dances, you can then excel in dancing a brisk routine for just 2 or 3 minutes. You will break into a sweat.

All this accompanied with fun, music, poise and euphoria!

If you are a beginner, these are some of the many benefits you will derive from ballroom dancing: • Strengthen and tone muscles • Promote heart and lung function • Build stronger bones, help reduce risk of osteoporosis • Improve posture, shape and tone the body • Improve coordination and balance • Lower risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes • Lose weight (1 hour can burn about 500 calories) • Lower blood pressure • Improve flexibility and agility • Improve endurance

In addition to physical benefits, Ballroom dancing has been found to prevent Alzheimer’s and is now a doctor-prescribed exercise in the UK with possible health insurance coverage.

COURTESY VARD MARGARYAN

Have you noticed that most dance routines only last 2-3 minutes? It takes endurance, flexibility, balance and agility to do one of these routines. Every muscle in your body will engage in that type of exercise, as they must work in coordination with each other. Hence the benefits of a “high intensity, low interval exercise”.

Ballroom dancing can also: • Boost memory • Increase confidence • Increase social skills • Reduce stress What a great way to meet other people, or for couples to spend quality time together without any other stimulants, as ballroom dancing increases serotonin levels and can be your best anti-depressant!

living yoga off the mat

BY IJY STAFF

This year, the IJY Festival is going to have a yoga class that will use essential oils within the body of the class. Essential oils are a powerful plant medicine. You can use them to help you physically (like relaxing tight muscles or an upset stomach) and energetically (like opening your heart or helping creative energy flow). Are oils essential? Well, in addition to being a rather clever title for this article, the answer is that when used properly, essential oils are a wonderful compliment to your everyday life, AND your yoga class. When using Essential Oils there are THREE ways in which you can take advantage of their health promoting benefits. Inhalation: Breathing in directly or via a cool mist oil diffuser. This method will help support a healthy respiratory system as well as permit the active compounds within the essential oils to permeate throughout the body. This is a great method and can be used throughout the day while at home or work.

16 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | SPRING/SUMMER 2020

Topical: Application to the troubled areas for acute treatment, or applied to the bottoms of the feet and/or to the spinal column for general care. This provides a great way to administer essential oils as they travel via the nervous system throughout the body.

When using essential oils topically it is important to become familiar with the particular oil and its specific properties. Use mindfulness with sensitive skin.

Internal: This is one of the most controversial yet most beneficial ways recommended to use essential oils. NEVER use commercial essential oils internally—ever! If they are not labeled “safe for internal use” do not risk harm by ingesting unapproved oils. Look for the label “CPT.” (FYI: All doTERRA oils are labeled “CPT.”)

There are endless essential oils to choose from. How do you choose which ones to actually use? Here is some information provided by Eryn Johnson, a yogi and author: 1. Heart opening. Try geranium, rose, helichrysum, or jasmine essential oils. These oils are all associated with the heart chakra, helping you open up your center of giving and receiving unconditional love. 2. Grounding. Use vetiver, cedarwood,

black spruce, cypress, or any other tree oil you like. These earthy, tree-based oils help connect you to your roots in the earth, bring you out of your head and into your body.

3. Connecting to the Universe. Opt for

frankincense, lotus, palo santo, sandalwood, ginger, or basil oil. These oils open your crown chakra, your center of connection with your highest self and with the divine.

8. Opening your throat chakra. Use lemongrass, neroli, jasmine, or eucalyptus (my favorite is eucalyptus!) to open your center of speaking your truth, being seen, setting boundaries, and expressing yourself. 9. Promoting good sleep. Favorite oils for sleep are gentle, calming oils like lavender, vetiver, and neroli. Perfect for an evening vinyasa or yin class!

IJY would like to thank DoTERRA for providing the essential oils used during the IJY Festival. In addition to providing the oils, they have also provided IJY staff with guidance on how to incorporate essential oils into our daily lives. For more information on how essential oils can help you, please feel free to contact DoTERRA rep, Ana Contreras at 954-326-2164. Consultations are available upon request.

In addition to using essential oils while you are IN a class, make sure you use this combination of oils AFTER your class! When class is over, be sure to spray your mat with this essential oil blend to keep it clean. Try this recipe to create a purifying, cleansing spray to use on your yoga mats: • A spray bottle • Filtered water • 2 drops of tea tree or peppermint essential oil • 2 drops of lavender essential oil • A tablespoon or two of witch hazel (Don’t let the name scare you! Witch hazel is a natural cleanser and helps the water and essential oil combine.) Mix them together, shake it up, and you’re ready to get cleaning!

4. Enhancing creativity. My favorite oils

for creativity are tangerine, wild orange, peppermint, and clary sage. These oils help open your sacral chakra, your center of creativity, emotion, and sexuality.

5. Enhancing intuition. Experiment with benzoin, mastic, frankincense, rosemary, or sage for your third eye chakra. 6. Cultivating gratitude. Try bergamot, grapefruit, clove, white fir, or wild orange oils for gratitude. Their scents help elevate your mood and open your heart. 7. Surrendering. Opt for black spruce, Roman chamomile, or ylang ylang, all oils that help release control issues.

SAGING

YOUR NEW HOME farmers market. (The sage you’ll use for smudging isn’t the kind you pick up in the produce section of your local grocery store.) Before beginning, walk around every space and corner you can. When you go around the house, open windows, and any doors in your house (closet and to the outside).

Y

ou’ve bought your new home and are about to move in. One of the first things you should consider is saging your new home. What is “Saging” (also called “smudging”)? Saging has its roots in Native American traditions. It is a way to cleanse a person, place or an object of negative energies or influences. Simply burn the dry herbs, and set an intention to clear your house of any lingering negative energy. You can find dry, white sage at any Metaphysical store, online or at your local

Then, place your sage into a fireproof bowl. Burn a candle and set an intention, and then light the sage using the candle. Then blow out the candle, so the embers are glowing. (You can choose to sage yourself prior to saging your house.) Focus on your living spaces, as that’s where vulnerability comes from. Start on the lowest level of your space and move from room to room. Use your hand to waft the smoke into all four corners, where the ceiling and walls meet. Also, your bedroom is important to sage because you want to get good sleep and positive dreams! Burn regularly to ensure purity and balance, not just after moving into your new home.

But, in order to ensure you can use the sage again, make sure you extinguish it in dirt or sand, or concrete. Don’t use water! You won’t be able to use it again.
