Get ready for a night out on the town with your go-to macrame cross body bag! This fun and simple pattern only requires four basic knots: Lark’s Head, Square, Diagonal Clove Hitch, and Gather Knot. The use of twisted cotton cord is recommended for a sturdier design; however, using soft, single stranded cord may be substituted for a softer and more delicate finish. Finished Dimensions: Clutch: 7.5in 5.5in Strap: 46in Cords: 2mm twisted cotton cord from Ganxxet Supplies: 280ft of 2mm twisted macrame cord Clutch: 1 x 5ft 24 10ft Strap: 2 15ft 2 2.5ft Two Lobster Claw Swivel Clasps Scissors S-Shaped Hooks (Optional) Blue Painter’s Tape (Optional) Comb (optional)
Macrame Cross Body Bag 16 17 Directions: 30Now that the clutch is complete, it is time to create the detachable strap! Place an S-Shaped hook on the clothing rack and hang one lobster swivel clasp from it. Pull two 15ft cords midway through the swivel clasp. 31Use one 2.5ft cord to secure all cords to the clasp by tying gather knot approximately 0.5inch in length. (T1) 32Tie four-strand square knot right below the gather knot. (U1) 33Move the center two strands outwards and in this new position, tie a square knot approximately one inch below the previous square knot. (V1-W1) 35With a 2.5ft cord, secure all the cords with gather knot and cut off the excess cords. This completes the strap, which can easily be attached to the clutch. (Y1 – A2) 29After the glue has dried, flip the clutch inside out and fold over the flap. Use scissors to cut the fringe on the flap to desired length (Q1) To create fluffier fringe appearance, comb through the cords. (R1) 34Repeat step 33 until you are happy with the length of the strap. Once you create your final square knot, hang another S-Shaped hook from the clothing rack with another lobster swivel clasp attached to it. Pull the ends of the cords through the bottom of the swivel clasp and leave approximately 0.5inch of space between the final square knot and the top.

8 Ultimate Paper Piecing Reference Guide Foundation Paper Piecing 9 similar to Newsprint, but are made from stark white fibers, and are nearly transparent. These sheets work well if light table is not available, because you can see the position of the fabric through the sheet. Most of these sheets are inkjet printer compatible, but confirm on the packaging before using synthetic sheet in a laser printer. Standard Copy paper is not recommended for Foundation Paper Piecing, though it is possible in a pinch. At the end of the FPP process, papers are torn from behind the fabric along the seam lines. Stitching the seams also perforates the papers, making them easier to remove. Standard Copy paper is more difficult to tear. If you use copy paper, you’ll have more success using a very small stitch length which will make it easier to tear because of the extra perforation provided by the additional stitch holes. Rulers A rotary cutter and standard quilting rulers will help you cut down your fabric to manageable pieces to use in Foundation Paper Piecing. However, when trimming up seam allowances, an Add-a-quarter ruler has a lip that will catch the edge of the paper, making it easy to make clean ¼" cut. If you are making intricately pieced FPP that has sections smaller than ½", you’ll want an Add-an-eighth ruler to cut even smaller seam allowances. Other Supplies Glue When placing fabric on the back of your FPP pattern, you’ll want it to stay in place during the flipping and stitching process. A small dab of glue from either a glue pen designed for sewing, or a standard washable school glue stick will help the fabric stay in place. Keep one, or both, of these handy in your FPP sewing kit. Light Table Because Foundation Paper Piecing is stitched on the back of the paper with the fabric on the front, you’ll often want x-ray vision to see through the paper. A light table gives you the next best thing. Keeping a light table near your sewing machine allows you to easily see through the paper to confirm the placement of the fabric. Some light table brands are multi-purpose with the addition of a self-healing cutting mat on the light table surface. If a light table is outside of your current quilting budget, you can hold your papers up to any light in the room, or up to a window to see through them. Seam Roller Continually pressing the papers for foundation paper piecing can cause them to warp from the heat. To avoid this, you can use a seam roller to press your seams, rather than an iron. Using a seam roller also avoids having to get up to iron each piece between seams. Overview Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is stitched using sewing machine and papers that have the desired design printed or drawn on the surface. The image is printed in reverse, and the fabric is added to the back of the paper to make the design. Because the ink lines become the stitching lines, Foundation Paper Piecing allows quilters to create accurate quilting designs with sharp points and intricate details. The paper acts as a stabilizer, keeping the fabric from shifting, stretching, or warping. Once the design is fully stitched, the papers are removed. When stitching a Foundation paper pieced design, the fabrics must be stitched in the order designated on the pattern. Each consecutive seam must follow the entire edge of the current unit. Each seam is a straight line, and curves in FPP are simulated with multiple pieces each at a slightly different angle. Tools As you begin your Foundation Paper Piecing journey, there are a few tools you’ll want to have near your sewing machine to make the process easier. Papers You have several options for papers to use when Foundation Paper Piecing. If you are printing designs on your home printer, you’ll want to purchse sheets that have been pre-cut to 8 ½" x 11". Newsprint papers are very common for FPP, especially with preprinted designs. The paper is inexpensive, and very fiberous. The fibers make it very easy to tear away when the project is complete. These can be printed on either an inkjet or laser printer at home. Synthetic Paper Piecing Sheets are generally made from rayon or polyester fibers held together with a binding agent. They look ery 14 Ultimate Paper Piecing Reference Guide English Paper Piecing 15 1. Start by cutting your paper shapes. In this example, we’ll use the common 1" hexagon. 2. Next cut your fabric pieces. These pieces should be at least ¼" larger on all sides. Many EPP fans, especially beginners, cut an extra ⅜" on all sides. Non-perfectionists will appreciate knowing that these pieces can be rough-cut, and do not need to be exact. 3. Baste your fabric pieces to the paper pieces using either thread basting or glue basting (see below) 7. Using an overcast stitch, stitch along the edge of the hexagons, grabbing about 3 threads of fabric on each side. Stitch along the entire edge, keeping stitches ⅛" apart, or less. 8. When you reach the end of the edge, stitch in place three times to secure this end of the seam. 9. Open up the two pieces, and examine your stitches. 10. Place a third hexagon on top of one of the original two hexagons, lining up the edge where the last seam ended. 11. Stitch this seam in the same manner as the last: 3 stitches in place, stitching along the edge ⅛" or less apart, then 3 stitches in place at the end. 12. Open to examine the stitches. 13. Bring the thread back along this seam by threading the seam under the seam allowance. 14. Line up the second edge of the third hexagon. You will need to curve, bend, or even fold the papers to line up these edges. That is okay. 15. Stitch this seam the same as the last two: 3 stitches in place, stitching along the edge ⅛" or less apart, then 3 stitches in place at the end. 16. Repeat this process, continuing to add hexagons in the desired design until the project is complete. 4. Place two basted hexagons right-sides-together, lining up the edge you intend to stitch. 5. Thread your needle. Bring the needle up between the seam allowance and the paper template, into one of the hexagon points. 6. Stitch three stitches in place through both hexagons, bringing the needle through the third loop to create a knot. This secures the end of the thread and adds strength to the end of the seam. Dill (Anethum graveolens) Also known as: Dillweed This hardy annual, earlier known as Peucedanum graveolens is widely grown in herb gardens and is often seen as an escapee. Growing 24"–36" (60–90cm) high, it has an upright nature with hollow, ridged stems. Native to sunny parts of Europe and southwest Asia, it is now naturalized in many warm regions, including the West Indies, southern parts of North America, Australia, and New Zealand. It reproduces itself by self-sown seedlings and, as an escapee, has colonized many other countries. You’ll find it: Around the edges of old and abandoned herb gardens, especially where the soil is light and the position warm and sunny. Leaves and seeds: The blue-green, thread-like, feathery leaves that appear during summer have a distinctive aniseed flavor. From early to mid-summer, it bears small, yellow, star-like flowers in umbrella-like heads about 3" (7.5cm) wide. These flowers later produce small, brownish, slightly flattened seeds with thin, yellow ridges. Harvesting the leaves and seeds: Cut off young leaves throughout summer, but take care not to defoliate plants. The leaves are difficult to dry but can be frozen in the same way as Chervil (see page 50). Gather the umbrella-like seed heads when the fruits change from green to brown, and place inside paper bags. They can be gathered and stored in air-tight containers, where they keep well for up to a year. Using the leaves and seeds: Newly gathered leaves need to be used while still fresh as garnishes and flavoring for fish, boiled potatoes, beans, peas, poultry, and soups. They can also be added to salads. Seeds are added to vinegar when making pickles and add a sharpness to sauces. Dippy Dill INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon dill, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed Black pepper, to taste 1 cup (250ml) plain yogurt INSTRUCTIONS Add dill, garlic, and black pepper to plain yogurt to make a quick summer dip for cruditiés Dill also goes remarkably well with poached or grilled salmon. 114 A Guide to Wild Food Foraging Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca) Also known as: Sow-teat’s Strawberry, Woodland Strawberry A perennial plant with a thick, woody base producing long runners that develop roots at their leaf joints, its leaves are usually formed of three oval and coarsely serrated leaflets, bright green above and pale green beneath. White five-petalled flowers with deep yellow centers, up to 3/4" (1.8cm) across, appear on short stems from mid-spring to mid-summer. It is native to southern Europe, North America, Madeira, Azores, and much of Asia. It has also been planted in warm and temperate regions from where it has escaped into the countryside. You’ll find it: In woods, grassland, and scrubland, especially where the soil is fertile and slightly chalky. Fruits: Small, intensely flavored fruits, about and usually red, they have a sublime flavor compared with commercial berries. Harvesting the fruits: Pick as soon as they are red, usually in late summer. If left on the plant too long they quickly deteriorate. Using the fruits: Best eaten fresh, either on their own or with cream. They are usually sweet enough not to require a dusting of sugar. Cava and Wild Strawberry Jellies Cava is a sparkling wine similar to Champagne. Make the most of a handful of delicious wild berries in this summery jelly. INGREDIENTS 4 gelatin sheets 1 bottle Cava, chilled 1 tablespoon sugar INSTRUCTIONS 1. Set 1/2 cup (100ml) of Cava aside to warm to room temperature. 2. Soak gelatin sheets in cold water for 5 minutes. Squeeze out excess water. 3. Add room-temperature Cava to a small bowl over a pan of water. Add the gelatin and sugar. Heat through. 4. Remove from the heat, and add 1 cup (250ml) cold Cava. Stir. 5. Place a few berries in the base of four wine glasses or other pretty dessert dishes. 6. Pour over the gelatin-Cava mixture, then refrigerate until set. 7. Garnish with a few more berries if you have any left.
