Weatherford Public Library Event Guide - December 2020

A Letter From The Director We have almost made it to the end of 2020, so give yourself a pat on the back! The challenges of this year are too numerous to recount, but so fresh in our minds that no recap is necessary. Responding to the COVID-19 pandemic demanded that we make some changes, including curbside service when necessary and new online programming. Through all of it, the Weatherford Public Library found ways to continue offering its collections and services to our community. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Our Library Card Design Contest in September resulted in three fabulous new library card options. Those are available now, and I encourage you to come in and update your card...I know I am eager to get mine! We hosted a Favorite Animal Election in October and November, which resulted in dogs emerging as the victorious candidates. In return for these continuous efforts, WPL staff received many uplifting messages of encouragement from library users, and we thank you for those. They truly show how our community comes together in times of need and shows its strength and resilience. There will be several exciting developments coming to WPL in 2021, including a shaded reading area on the library lawn, a self-checkout machine, and online digitized newspapers that you will be able to access from home. While you may not recognize me at first with my mask on, I will see you in the shelves! Chris Accardo, Director of Library Services

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” -Stephen King

Meet The Staff In this month’s Meet the Staff, we are visiting Melissa Smith, Librarian II at Weatherford Public Library. Melissa is celebrating her second anniversary with WPL, and has done a variety of duties in her time here including presenting storytimes, providing reference assistance to customers, visiting school and community groups with outreach programs, selecting youth and teen materials for purchase, planning the Summer Reading Challenge, hosting guest speakers, presenting virtual craft programs for adults and teens, and hosting the book club. Melissa earned her first college degree from Texas A&M and met and married her husband, James, in Aggieland. She received her Master of Library Science degree from the University of North Texas and has enjoyed a career in librarianship ever since.

Of course, one of Melissa’s favorite activities is reading with some of her favorite selections being history, biography, and mysteries. James and Melissa love spending time with their dogs, watching football games together, and cooking on their outdoor grill.

“I help build a strong community by promoting the joy of reading.” - Melissa

Melissa is a lifelong Star Trek fan and enjoyed dressing up as a Klingon for a virtual teen cosplay program last summer. / 7
