The award-winning group have been performing since 1969 and are a favourite among Jazz fans throughout Australia, really helping to put Australian jazz on the map. Catch this unique live performance, alongside supports Benny Nelson and Elder Children in the HOTA Basement on Saturday 30 November.

HOLLOW COVES Moments

T

he long-awaited follow up to Hollow Coves’ acclaimed debut EP has arrived this month, with the duo bringing full length debut album ‘Moments’ to the world, accompanied by a world tour that has already sold out dates across Europe and the US.

The album starts in true Hollow Coves style with two aspirational and hopeful tracks, ‘Anew’ and title track ‘Moments’, setting a superb tone for an album filled with catchy, acoustic guitar-driven melodies and harmonies set to lyrics that speak of making the very best out of life, even in the midst of fear for the future and circumstantial sadness. Travelling to beautiful places has always seemed to inspire Hollow Coves’ songwriting and ‘Moments’ continues these themes with the lovely track ‘Borderlines’ and ‘The Open Road’, amongst others. Fans of these Palm Beach-based world travellers will be pleased to add to their playlists in October with Hollow Coves’ new offering. ‘Moments’ is the perfect playlist for lazy weekend afternoons during the coming summertime. LENNY KRAVITZ

B

luesfest 2020 has recently dropped perhaps their biggest bombshell yet by announcing Lenny Kravitz as headliner for next year’s event. The four-time Grammy-nominated artist will be bringing his blend of rock, funk, blues and soul to Bluesfest, alongside recent announcements The Waterboys and Jimmie Vaughan both performing exclusively at the three day event, Eagles of Death Metal, Tal Wilkenfeld, Zucchero, Ani Difranco, Cory Henry & the Funk Apostles, Amadou & Mariam, The Allman Betts Band, Yola, Joachim Cooder and Steve 'n' Seagulls. They will be joining Dave Matthews Band, Crowded House (exclusive Australian performance), Patti Smith and her Band, George Benson, John Butler, Xavier Rudd and many more for a full weekend of rock, roots and blues that is sure to be unrivalled in this country.

To welcome Lenny Kravitz and show our appreciation, we have compiled a list of 11 Reasons Why You Should Go Bluesfest's Way next Easter as interpreted through his eleven albums and songs from each.

LET LOVE RULE ('FLOWER CHILD') Nestled at Tyagarah Tea Farm, just ten minutes north of Byron Bay, Bluesfest is situated amongst the tranquil beauty of a part of New South Wales that is yet to be fully affected by the trappings of big city life. The area is spacious and accommodating and provides a beauty and ambience that perfectly aligns with the musical spectacular that it hosts each Easter.

MAMA SAID ('IT AIN'T OVER TIL IT'S OVER') With the widely reported demise of live music festivals in Australia, Bluesfest can lay claim to being the longest-running event on the annual calendar. Since humble beginnings in 1990, Bluesfest has solidified its reputation as the most diverse music extravaganza in the country, supporting both local, national, and international artists. With a strong focus on nurturing homegrown talent and providing them with the opportunity to play to a large audience, organisers continue to grow not only the Australian music scene but also provide a comfortable environment for fans to enjoy their music.

12

www.blankgc.com.au

ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY ('BELIEVE')

Why you should go Bluefest’s way

Starting off as a one-day music event, Bluesfest has continued to believe and grow to the point where the festival is now held over five days with over 200 performers. Belief in themselves, music, and the needs and demands of the music-loving public has seen the festival grow from a community event to a national showcase with each year drawing a higher quality of artists than the one before.

CIRCUS ('ROCK & ROLL IS DEAD') If that is true then the organisers and the punters certainly aren't listening. With an assortment of rock, roots and blues acts from all over the globe, people are voting with their feet and supporting what is a current resurgence of live, rock music.

5 ('SUPER SOUL FIGHTER') With acts such as Jimmy Vaughan (Stevie Ray Vaughan's brother), Walter Trout, The Cat Empire and Brandi Carlisle, the emphasis on soul and music with heart and feeling has never been more evident. While there is breath, there is life, and the beautiful and soulful sounds resonating from each stage of Bluesfest will be enough to soothe even the harshest of souls.

BAPTISM ('DESTINY')

With past line-ups including Canned Heat, Bondi Cigars, The Hippos, Mal Eastick, Dave Hole, Renee Geyer, Billy Thorpe, Chain, The Black Sorrows, The Cruel Sea and a host of other Australian and New Zealand bands, Crowded House will play their first Australian show in three years at Bluesfest 2020. This will be an exclusive performance in the country, marking yet another landmark celebration for festival organisers.

IT'S TIME FOR A LOVE REVOLUTION ('DANCIN' TIL DAWN') With more than 200 performers over three days, festival-goers can either dance until dawn or take comfort in the camping grounds provided for ticket holders. Numbers in the camping area are limited so make sure you enquire as soon as possible to ensure success.

BLACK AND WHITE AMERICA ('ROCKSTAR CITY LIFE') You might never get the chance to actually be a rockstar but Bluesfest gives you the chance to party like you are. In the past celebrities such as Matt Damon, Jason Momoa and Chris Hemsworth have all been spotted in the crowd so you never know who you will end up dancing beside!

LENNY ('BORN TO PLAY')

STRUT ('HAPPY BIRTHDAY')

This is for Lenny Kravitz himself. The American singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has been master of his domain since bursting onto the music scene in 1989. He has sold 40 million albums worldwide and brings three decades of dominance to a line-up already bristling with big names and talent.

This year Bluesfest celebrated its 30th birthday and has almost single-handedly kept the blues, rock and roots live music scene alive. In excess of 125,000 people come to Byron Bay from all over the world to be a part of Bluesfest and with such a committed following there is no reason why a 50th celebration will become a reality.

RAISE VIBRATION ('WE CAN ALL GET TOGETHER') No matter what style of music you like or what your background is, Bluesfest provides a safe and uniting environment in which to enjoy your music. With food, camping and entertainment all in the one area, Bluesfest is not only a celebration of music, it is a celebration of life.

BOBBY ALU Flow

I

magine you and your significant others have Claire decided to take aImage walkbyon a Dalton beach (perhaps, one of the beautiful beaches along the 57km of options along the Gold Coast coastline). The sun is shining, the ocean is glistening and the sand is warm. As you walk you see a group of families; children, parents, and grandparents; enjoying themselves just inside the dunes. Sandcastles, a bit of beach cricket, smiles and laughter, a table full of delicious food… you so want to be a part of that family and that scene.

Now imagine there is a background soundtrack to that joyful scene. Bobby Alu’s much anticipated new release ‘Flow’ is the soundtrack to those wonderful moments of fun and summer satisfaction, out just in time to make that scenic dream a reality. The typical beats and island vibe of a Bobby Alu album are present and accounted for but there seems a new dimension to ‘Flow’ whereby he’s brought the intimacy of his own family and friends sharing good times into the music. Every track is a winner, even the more reflective ‘Dust’ that might break the mould of the generally upbeat and playful album. Highlights are ‘Finally’ and ‘Move’, which fans would have heard, but ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Coast is Clear’ are also hits in their own right. ‘Flow’ is a necessary addition to every Gold Coaster’s soundtrack to the 2019/20 spring and summer. T

he Gold Coast now has access to a revolutionary free voice-activated service that details surf conditions for 20 of the region’s iconic and world-famous beaches.

Developed by Pete Whelan, Swell Buddy provides hourly swell conditions and can be accessed through Google Assistant on over one billion android devices and one hundred million smart speakers. It is an entirely voiceactivated system that provides you with current wave height, frequency and direction hourly updates. "Swell Buddy gives you a very quick report of the local swell conditions," Pete explained. "You get audio playback of the latest conditions immediately so the idea is you can be driving your Kombi van down the M1 highway and say 'hey swell buddy what's it like at Snapper Rocks' and it will come back and give you a quick idea of what the conditions are like locally. You can even ask about different beaches at different times so you can, for example, ask the condition for Burleigh Heads at 3pm and find out the answer." While there are other surf condition reports available, Pete stresses that Swell Buddy is the way of the future. "It has added features of being immediate and accessible," he declared.

SEE WHERE TAFE CAN TAKE YOU

"There's a lot of surf reports out there that are very in-depth and technical and give a lot of information but this is more meeting the surfers where they are. They could be driving down the Gold Coast highway and want to know where it's good at that instant and get that information right here, right now spoken to you rather than typed into the internet. This is completely hands-free so you can talk in your car, your phone or even your fridge! It will change the way we interact with surfing conditions."

VINNIES GIVES US HARD-ONS THE EAST POINTERS Yours To Break

F

resh and uplifting, both musically and lyrically, ‘Yours to Break’ by Canadian folk trio The East Pointers is a must-listen. Clever musical lilts and catchy contemporary interludes season traditional offerings in a progressive album that will change the way you think about folk music. The album kicks off with the perfectly upbeat and hopeful ‘Wintergreen’, which some may have seen choreographically delivered by an amazing Yellow Wiggle, Emma Watkins on the official music video, complete with AUSLAN sign language set into the dance. I am convinced this song is the encouragement we all need today. Like the equally fresh bread on the base of any good sandwich, the final two tracks on the album combine a lovely lyrical treat in ‘If You’re Still In I’m In’ and a poignant instrumental close with ‘S.O.S’, which is an acronym for Save Our Sharks. “Come again, bright days, come again, come again When you’re good to go, I’m following If you’re still in, I’m in.” The special sauce of emerging Michigan country/folk singer Lindsay Lou visits on the more thoughtful track ‘Elmira’. ‘Halfway Tree’ and ‘Mystery Cove’ bring the core flavour and both are excellent songs that will no doubt be sung and danced throughout the coming Woodford Folk Festival over the 2019-20 New Year, where the band features on the program most days. Luckily, you won’t have to trek to the Sunshine Coast hinterland to see these Canadian gentlemen of folk music (although we do commend the excellent annual Woodford pilgrimage to you, in a general sense) because The East Pointers will be serving up ‘Yours To Break’ at Miami Marketta on the evening of 5 January. The album is well worth the listen to brighten your day, and will no doubt fill your belly with a Canadian Celtic warmth satisfying your hunger.

L

egendary Sydney punkers the Hard-Ons are about to resurface upon the musical landscape off the back of their just-released new album, 'So I Could Have Them Destroyed'.

The band are renowned for covering off most bases in the pantheon of amped up guitar music, from melodically charged garage rock through to edgy punk-pop and metal-tinged thrash, all done with typical hair twirling vigour and with the humour and irreverence that has long been the band’s trademark. In short, the new album shreds, and is without a doubt one of the finest across their illustrious 35+ year tenure in the biz, which is saying a lot! And on 22 November they'll be hitting Vinnies Dive Bar to showcase the album, as well as delivering a broad smattering of back catalogue gems. In the lead up, founding bassist and all-round good guy, Ray Ahn, took time out to answer a few questions. You've just dropped studio album number 12, 'So I Could Have Them Destroyed'. Are you pleased with how it turned out from a production perspective? And where do you rate it in the pantheon of Hard-Ons releases? We are very happy with this release. I think we managed to get the balance right, largely thanks to the input of producer Lachlan Mitchell. Often in the past we’ve buried the vocals and drums in favour of a lot of guitars and although that gives you an outrageously insane sound, we wanted the melodies and rhythm highlighted on this album. We find that getting the balance right is very challenging and we rely heavily on the outside ear for guidance. It is certainly my favourite Hard-ons album so far, but nobody goes out promoting their “3rd worst album”, it is always the best one so far. Across the life of the band you've played on the Gold Coast many a time - do you have a favourite venue or a gig in particular that stands out for you across the times you've played here?

We do enjoy playing the Gold Coast a lot. In a lot of ways, the Gold Coast remains an exotic location for the band. We mainly grew up in the outer south-west of Sydney away from the beaches. Therefore, the whole carefree lifestyle on the beach just seems a little foreign to us, to this day. But always, the shows have been good up there. We used to play The Playroom a lot. Also the shows at The Patch in Coolangatta were always fun. The best time we had at The Playroom was probably when we supported The Ramones. It was insane! Once your upcoming touring commitments are complete, are there any plans to get back overseas and play some shows again? The Hard-Ons are always looking to play overseas. Next year we are looking to play Japan and also parts of Europe. We went to Finland in 2019 but in reality, we’ve not played Scandinavia much since 2009. It is a real shame, because that part of the world is a fascinating place to tour, it is an out-of-thisworld experience. Our 2020 tour of Europe will be the 20th time we’ve travelled there to play, so that will be pretty good going for a relatively unknown band from Australia. Is there a finite date for the band, or is a case of 'rock till you drop'? There is never a finite time for this band. It has been going on and off since 1982. If we all stop next week, what does it matter any way, we would have had a decent run. The truth is, we have no idea when we will stop. Especially when there is always the chance that we’ll be on a plane sometime in the future travelling to say, Japan. Anthony Gebhardt

While Europe and Japan beckons in 2020, for November the Hard-Ons will be rocking out on a full scale national tour, taking in Vinnes Dive Bar in Southport on 22 November. Check the Blank GC website for the full interview.

ALBATROSS NIPPERS THE SUBJECT OF NEW FILM

‘I

ncluded’ is a heart-warming documentary of a surf lifesaving program bringing children with special needs to the beach.

be safe at the beach. The beach has been off limits for these families due to sand, noise, chaos. For most of them there has been a massive transformation. The kids love it and have all instinctively learned through the fun. For the parents, it has been a huge leap forward. They know when they come, they will have accessible toilets, carparks, wheelchairs and will be among friendly faces.”

The touching story of Australia’s most inspiring surf lifesaving program - Albatross Nippers has been made into a documentary and will be screened at HOTA 21 October 2019. The documentary is a bid to raise awareness of this inclusive program and highlights its mission to help children with special needs experience the joy of surf lifesaving and the positive impact it has made in the lives of these children and their families. Now in its fifth season, Albatross Nippers is conducted within Nobby’s Beach already established Nippers program which mean all the children get to train alongside one another. The program now has over 100 children and young adults registered up and down the coast as participants and continues to gain momentum. Founder Nick Marshall discusses the growth of the program. “Many of the children I have coached over the years had siblings with special needs who wanted to participate, so a demand was there. What I thought would be a small group of kids training with us at Nobbys, is now a program that has gathered momentum locally, throughout the state and interstate also.” Inspiration for the film came as with the 2019 Queensland carnival in March, Queensland Surf lifesaving would be celebrating 50 years of Nippers. Nick wanted to do something special and give these children an opportunity to represent their club in the state carnival. Through

Nick hopes the film will show other clubs how the program can be implemented and that it is relatively easy. “Naturally you have to tick all the boxes, but everything is already in place. It really is a matter of inviting the families in.

that journey it became apparent that these children were doing something that had never been done before, and an incredible story was unfolding. Nick teamed up with local film maker Shannon Johnston from Risen Film, and together they created a truly inspiring documentary. “Originally, we planned for the film to be 10 minutes in length. Then we decided to interview some of the families and kids which enabled us to know the people and learn about their day to day and what the program truly means to them. There is more emotion in there than we thought,” says Nick. “One of main reasons for Nippers is to give children the tools to have confidence in the water, and to know how to

“There is a strong bond in the surf lifesaving community. At first, I worried if the people would be there, but each week the volunteers are there, with smiling eager to be involved. We have people helping us source funding and equipment. Teenagers come forward offering to help.” What makes Albatross Nippers so special is that it promotes inclusiveness. It is not run separately to the main program. That is important to Nick. “When Nippers celebrate 100 years, everyone will naturally be included in these programs. If people see this film in that time, they will see these brave kids and families who had the courage to give it a go, trust the program, and made it happen.’” Nicole Browne

FARM2MARKET COMES TO GC F

arm2Market, launching soon on the Gold Coast, is a fresh grocery delivery service that provides farmers with a reliable way to market and sell their produce as well as supplying customers with local groceries and giving them the real farm-fresh fruit and veg experience. We talked to founder, Jordan Pearce, to learn more about what inspired him to create Farm2Market. What motivated you to start this business? In my late twenties I started noticing a big difference between the fresh produce I was eating at our family farm and what I was able to purchase from the larger supermarket chains. On the farm the apples were crisp, tomatoes bursting with flavour and the oranges sweet, juicy and tangy. I know they weren't doing anything special on the farm, just planting, watering and watching them grow. I did some research to find out what the supermarkets were doing differently and the only thing I could find was that they were 'cold storing' the produce for a long time, up to eight months for some produce. I thought, this can't be right, the fresh food would be rotten if it stayed in a fridge for eight months and there would be no nutritious value in eating an apple that old. 18

www.blankgc.com.au

I started shopping at local farmers markets for our fresh produce. The trigger that gave me the idea to set up Farm2Market was only being able to access produce from our local farmers between 7am and 12pm on a Saturday or Sunday. If I wasn't able to make it over the weekend, it was near impossible to source good local produce through the week. The final trigger and what pushed me into action was the 'milk price war' that was initiated by the large supermarket chains in 2011 and the negative effect it had on dairy farmers businesses and their family’s lives. I felt like I had to do something that allowed consumers to source amazing, farm fresh produce and support our local producers and hardworking farmers. Who are you hoping will benefit from this service? Anyone who prefers fresh, and I mean genuinely 'fresh', local, seasonal produce sourced directly from the farmer, producer or cooperative. Traceability is the cornerstone of our marketplace, consumers know exactly where their products and food are produced. Where possible, cutting down on 'food miles' and giving more of the profits back to our farmers.

How do you see Farm2Market developing in the future? We look forward to more farmers and producers joining Farm2Market, initially focussing on city centres. We will continue adding more features to the platform to support the business practices of our farmer, so they can focus on what they do best - creating amazing produce for us to eat. Amaya Coburn

"I have had a lifetime of [challenges] and finally went to the GP at 30, and the only answer he had was medication,” Terry explains. “We started thinking along the lines that there must be some form of social outlet we can offer. For us playing soccer was our outlet, so we arranged to do a couple of hours kick around one weekend and that morphed into the barbecues. HOLLOW COVES Magical Moments G

lobal indie-folk success story Hollow Coves are back in the spotlight, having just dropped their highly anticipated debut album, 'Moments', (which we have also recently reviewed).

The intrepid duo, consisting of coguitar/vocalists Matt Carin and Ryan Henderson, experienced somewhat of a meteoric rise during 2018 off the back of their song 'Coastline', which took out song of the year honours at the 2018 Gold Coast Music Awards (they also claimed the 'Breakout Artist of the Year’ award in the same year.) Their debut EP, 'Wanderlust', which also' came out in 2018, solidified the duo’s burgeoning reputation, with the new record and subsequent touring schedule, both here and abroad, set to continue their rapid musical ascension. We were very pleased to be able to grab a chat with the guys before they head off for a bunch of European shows. Images by Lamp Photography

First of all, congratulations on the release of your debut album, 'Moments', you must be very proud!? Thank you so much. It’s crazy to think back on how much time went into making this record and the whole process that it went through. Going into the album we had written a lot of ideas. We wanted to develop our sound but also stay consistent to what we

had already released. However, we also just wanted to be respectful of the music that we were writing naturally. After the feedback we got from the first EP, we knew we wanted to write songs that could help to encourage and uplift people.

The album was produced by Chris Bond, who has worked with some amazing artists, like Ben Howard and Xavier Rudd. We thought he would be a great fit because he has not only produced albums that we were massive fans of, but he also plays drums and bass, which were the main elements we were missing. We recorded it in his studio in Devon in the UK over multiple lengthy trips. A lot of time and hard work went into record but we are pumped with the result.

You'll also be embarking on a national tour in January in support of the new album. To what degree has your live performance developed and grown since you first started out? It’s been quite a while since we’ve toured Australia and we’re super pumped for these shows. We’ve been working really hard on developing our live show. We’re going out with a full band behind us to make the experience more dynamic and energetic. The show is definitely going to be bigger and more fun than ever! Anthony Gebhardt.

Any plans to release it on vinyl? Yes! This is something we’re super excited about. A lot of people have been asking for vinyl so we’re glad to finally make it happen.

Do you guys still have a strong connection with and affinity for the Gold Coast? And what are a few of your favourite local haunts and places to hang-out? Yeah for sure. I actually spent much of my youth coming down here for surf trips when I used to live in Brisbane. I’ve now lived on the Gold Coast for the past 7 years. Ryan and I both live in a shared house now in Palm Beach with four of our best mates. The community we have around us has been amazing and they are all super supportive of our music. Our go-to spot at the moment is a little café called Highline in Palm Beach. Great coffee and great vibes. Our crew is there most mornings. We would definitely recommend checking it out.

Be sure to wrap your ears around Hollow Coves spectacular debut full length album, ‘Moments’, and keep an eye out for their upcoming national tour. For the full transcript of the interview, head over to the Blank GC website.

DIESEL POWERS INTO SOUTHPORT

O

z rock legend Diesel is a name familiar to most long-term fans of Australian music, having performed and recorded for over 30 years. The man known to his mother as Mark Lizotte has certainly shown no signs of slowing down, with 2019 proving to be highly productive on a number of levels.

recordings, usually I have demos of some kind but this time I thought I would write and record in the studio.” And with a full-length album with even more new material also not too far away, it’s clear that he’s in the middle of a particularly fertile period of creativity. “There’s been quite a few things bottled up, probably due to the fact that the previous release was ‘Americana’, which was a covers album,” he tells us. “That was also an inspiring project to do, but it's nice to make some new original recordings.”

what we’re supposed to play - but that's OK! We love to play and if it takes a little longer to get to all the hits and a few new things too, that's not a bad thing. I remember touring when it was just the one album, trying to fill out the set was a real challenge.” Well that’s certainly not going to be a problem at his Gold Coast Show. We’ll leave it to the man himself to have the final word on how much he’s looking forward to playing for us. “I've had some great experiences playing the Gold Coast, from doing the Blues On Broadbeach outdoors to solo shows at Southport – the Gold Coast seems to love live music!” Anthony Gebhardt

Be sure to catch Diesel when he hits the stage and plays… and plays… on Saturday, 16 November at the Southport RSL. He’ll also be playing the night before at The Triffid in Brisbane.

If that wasn’t enough, Diesel is also about to embark on a national tour, taking in 20 dates around the country, including a bunch of more ‘off the beaten track’ locations such as Corio and Goondiwindi, which he’s certainly looking forward to.

Earlier in the year he announced the commencement of his ‘Sunset Suburbia Trilogy’ of EPs, a series that he’s bringing out in the lead up to a new album in 2020. ‘Sunset Suburbia Volume II’ is coming out on 8 November, including a limited, signed and numbered 10-inch coloured vinyl edition. It consists of four new numbers in the ongoing trilogy series, including cracking new single, ‘In Reverse’. Says Diesel of the inspiration that’s driving the project; “I wanted to make music in a different way than the usual album format, even though it's an album that I'll eventually arrive at. It's been interesting to watch each EP take on its own form and flavour.” And the final EP in the trilogy is already underway, to be released in the new year. Diesel discussed its genesis. ”I'm deep into it as we speak, doing the finishing touches, mixing etc. It's been a different approach making these

“I love getting to the regional spots. I think with internet access, smart phones etc, people are connected everywhere now and they seem to know what's going on as much as city dwellers do, maybe even more. There is definitely less static in regional areas so it does make for a little more attention when we come to their area.” Local Diesel fans will get the chance to catch him here on the Gold Coast, on 22 November, at RSL Club Southport. The upcoming shows certainly promise to be a jam packed extravaganza, for which Diesel is clearing relishing the thought of. “With each new release the challenge of fitting what is now 17 albums in, gets a little harder and we inevitably always end up playing longer than

DON’T STOP, MARDI WILSON

A

fter kicking off her massive East Coast 'Don't Stop' tour in October, singer, songwriter, composer and multi-instrumental alternative folk artist Mardi Wilson makes her way to the Gold Coast for a show at Miami Marketta on 6 December.

The tour is celebrating the release of the single of the same name, a song which Mardi insists is more a reflection on modern society than it is an attempt to dictate terms. "When I was writing the album I was more wanting to tell a story of my experiences with parties and being in an awkward or scary situation," she said. "I feel like everyone has been there once or twice. I didn't want to have a suggestion or vibe to the song that was telling people what to do, it was more intended to be an observational song and let people draw their own conclusions. I know the party culture is a huge thing and it's all fun and games until it's not, so I didn't want to push any agenda." Stepping outside of her comfort zone by making more of an upbeat rock song rather than her favoured acoustic music, 'Don't Stop' features an array of experimental sound effects designed to enhance the overall feel of the song. "When Brad Hosking (producer) and I were recording the song I said it would be cool to have some different sound effects," she recalled, "and he was saying to me be careful that you don't overdo it.

IVORI Groove Is In The Heart

G

roovalicious psychedelic soul collective IVORI have just resurfaced on the musical landscape in the form of two fabulous new tracks, which have come out on 7 inch vinyl via new Northern Rivers record label, Pimo Rekkids.

The tracks, 'Dirty Money' (written after a jam in a dirty Gold Coast basement) and 'Mr Samurai' (channelling a soundtrack to an imaginary underground samurai film) are also available online through Bandcamp and serve as a precursor to the band's upcoming new album, 'Odyssea', which promises to be a cosmic mind-trip of epic proportions. Recently we had a chat with the band's front-woman (and poet), Emjay, to get the lowdown on all things IVORI.

Can you tell us a bit about how your sound has evolved in the past few years? We spent some time and really honed in on our grooves. We had a guitarist on our first LP in 2015, since then we have become a four piece sporting drums, bass, keys and vocals. With this line up we have naturally felt closer to our Neo Soul and Funk roots.

“We recorded a whole bunch of different things because I felt like the song had so much opportunity for material relevance in terms of using sounds that are related to the topic - like the bottle caps and sirens. “The use of the sirens is actually a funny story because I was listening to the initial mix of the song when I was driving and I heard this siren and I thought that sounds cool but I didn't realise we had put it in the mix and then I realised it was actually on the road (laughs), and that's where the idea came from." Mardi has released two singles from her as yet untitled upcoming album, with 'Astronaut' coming out earlier this year. Both songs are a step in a different direction to what fans would normally expect and she makes no apologies for shifting her focus slightly. "For the first two songs I wanted to do something different to my usual acoustic guitar, very chilled songs," she said. "There will be a few more pared-back acoustic songs on there but also some more experimental songs like 'Don't Stop'. It's a real mixed bag of music and I didn't want to stick to a particular theme. I wanted to create a whole bunch of songs and make the production fit each song and I think it's going to result in a lot of different sounds but hopefully in a good way." Kris Peters

Catch Mardi Wilson when she hits the stage at Miami Marketta on 6 December. the music your undivided attention. Its ritualistic and you respect it. Our new single 'Dirty Money' feels right at home on vinyl and the upcoming album will also be pressed onto wax, released through local label Pimo Rekkids. Who are a few musical artists/acts that are currently inspiring you? SO MANY but a few on the current playlists for the band members are: Electric Fields, Emma Donovan and the Putbacks, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Lizzo, Nai Palm,The Suffers, Lake Street Dive and always Prince.

You'll soon be dropping an album, 'Odyssea'. Can you fill us in about it?

What are a few of your favourite hang-outs on the Gold Coast (music related or otherwise)?

‘Oddysea’ is the second LP from us, but it's the first release as the new IVORI. It plays out like more of a concept album and gives you pieces of our story. When we were writing ‘Oddysea’ we juxtaposed ancient mythology with modern themes. We wanted to give our take on those bigger concepts, against the backdrop of gritty rhythms and unexpected twists.

Dive Bars are where it’s at - we love Mo's Desert Clubhouse, Last Night On Earth, Elsewhere, Nightjar, Vinnies, Miami Marketta and Eddies Grub House. Food wise, I like Ramen, Ramen Danbo, Francie’s Pizzeria and VN Bakery.

It's also exciting that your new single has come out on vinyl! Do you have an affinity for this format? There has always been something special about music on a record. From holding the cover like a piece of art to giving

DEADLY HEARTS

F

rom the hearts and mouths of a crossgeneration of Indigenous Australians, first nations concert ‘Deadly Hearts’ - a flagship event of HOTA’s upcoming summer festival HOME – will feature some of Australia’s best present and emerging artists. Australian music stars Jessica Mauboy and Archie Roach will be taking listeners on a sonic journey through the foundations of their musical inspiration, supported by exciting up and comers Aodhan, Selve, and HVWKS, plus more to be announced.

A four-time ARIA accredited Platinum seller, Jessica Mauboy is a one of our hottest national exports. Not only has she sold over 3.4 million units globally, achieved five top ten albums, 15 top twenty singles, and had over 158 million streams, Jessica has also toured with Beyonce and collaborated with the likes of Ricky Martin, and Pitbull, and made history being the first non-European solo artist to represent Australia at Eurovision. No one has lived as many lives as Archie Roach – from stolen child, teenage alcoholic, seeker, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, to social advocate and First Nations leader – but it took almost a lifetime to find who he really was. Roach voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through song to become the legendary singersongwriter and storyteller that he is today. 15 year old Dharawal singer/songwriter Aodhan was honoured to win JJJ’s Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative with his coastal folk flavoured ‘When Your Eyes Speak’. Aodhan fuses heartfelt writing with soulful musicality. Selve are a psychedelic art rock band based out of the Gold Coast and Brisbane. The band is formed of Indigenous lead singer/songwriter Loki Liddle and lead musical composer Harry Edwards (Elder Children). Together they create narrative driven alternative music inspired by the likes of Foals, Nick Cave and Tame Impala. Making waves in the Australian electronic bass music scene, Brisbane-based Indigenous artist HVWKS is truly paving his own way through this ecosystem with a unique sound ranging from melodic future bass to heavy hitting trap beats. Natalie O’Driscoll

Deadly Hearts will expand hearts and minds on Saturday 14 December from 3.30pm at the HOTA Outdoor Stage. Tickets start from $32 and are available at hota.com.au.

WE TALK BEST NIGHT EVER WITH BAD//DREEMS

I

f past years are any indication you had best get in early if you want to be part of this year’s Best Night Ever. The last two years have sold out quickly, and with a line-up this year featuring Bad//Dreems, Ruby Fields, The Chats, The Bennies, Clowns, Press Club, locals Being Jane Lane and Radolescent - plus a special headliner to be revealed in December there is every likelihood this year will follow suit.

Bad//Dreems vocalist and guitarist Ben Marwe recently had a chat with Blank GC to fill us in on what to expect from his band and the event as a whole. "You can expect a bunch of new songs from the latest release, a good attitude, and some Bad//Dreems branded pies," he promised, adding "what a perfect way to celebrate the end of this year and the start of next! Everybody is always in a good mood around that time of year. Maybe I’ll dress as Santa..." In an interesting turn of events, Ben revealed a few inside feelings on some of the other bands performing. "You can’t go past The Chats here as the band who will be most fun to play with," he smiled. "We love those little pricks. Although we’ve never played with Ruby Fields or Clowns before so who knows. The Bennies are always fun too." It seems The Chats win out in the band to be most serious as well. "Definitely The Chats," Ben nodded, deferring to the band’s hit single, "because they seem pretty serious about being left alone during smoko." To make things even more exciting Bad//Dreems will also have released their third album 'Doomsday Ballet' before the event, with Ben hinting at a slightly new and unexpected musical direction.

"There are some keys, synth, a lot more acoustic guitar and handclaps," he said. "Crazy, right?" With the album press release alluding to a 'more textured, art-driven, considered album with a more evolved sound', Ben admits the band are nervously excited to unleash it on their fans. "It’s our most complete body of work this far," he enthused. "We worked hard to create a different sounding album to previous releases, which I think we achieved. We still maintained elements of the first two albums, but concentrated heavily on nailing structure, guitar tones and vocal melody." While retaining certain parts of what made the previous albums successful, Ben explains it is the more subtle changes that will likely have the greatest effect. "It was recorded by a different producer in a different studio in a different state," he said. "It was a completely new experience for us which added a bit of zest to the process. I think it allowed us to explore songwriting styles and develop as a band more too." In the past Bad//Dreems have been more or less pigeon-holed as a pub rock band, and while 'Doomsday Ballet' is likely to shift the focus further away from this preconception, Ben admits the band has learnt to accept the labels placed upon them. "I’m still not sure what pub rock is," he laughed. "We’re also a lot of other things. It depends what people want to latch onto I guess. We actively tried to create some angularity to the songs to differ from the previous wall of sound motif. Our main objective is to write good songs, so if they fall into what people perceive as pub rock then that’s on them." Kris Peters

VIBIN’ WITH KATIE WHO AHEAD OF SSITV W

ith a manifesto of 'bring your good vibes and watch live music for free', the Summertime Sessions in the Village have proven to be one of the most loved events on the radar of discerning Gold Coast music fans for a few years now. The next instalment is taking place within the picturesque Mudgeeraba Village precinct (in Cuddihy Park, Swan Lane) every Friday evening from the start of November through until mid-December and this year’s musical line up is as diverse and talented as ever.

BENNY D WILLIAMS Cleanse Your Soul

T

hose with an ear to the ground for unique, quality and original Gold Coast sounds would no doubt already be familiar with the name Benny D Williams. A one-man multi instrumental virtuoso and studio wizard operating out of his local beach side shack, Williams has ridden rapidly to prominence over the past few years off the back of his mesmerising live performances and kaleidoscopic tapestry of layered sounds, as evidenced on his fantastic 2016 album, 'Digital Caveman'.

A dual finalist at the Gold Coast Music Awards, the soulfully solo loop guru is gearing up to shortly unveil a highly anticipated new album (and a concept album at that), entitled 'Cities Of Gold'. And in the lead up, he's just dropped a brand spanking new single, which goes by the title of 'Cleanse Your Soul'. Williams is clearly a performer who subscribes to the adage of never doing things by halves, and there's certainly nothing half-arsed about 'Cleanse Your Soul'. Freewheeling and breezily strummed acoustic guitars combine with a hypnotic groove to lay down the mantra for an aural saunter down a somewhat island vibe. With some smooth, multi-tracked vocal harmonies of the 'whoo' variety riding behind his sunny proclamation to "cleanse your soul", the track positively radiates cruisy summer surfing vibes across its three minute duration. Or to lay down it’s mantra by quoting a line: "I've got a feeling that the ocean's gonna wash your blues away". Half way through a percussive break and electrified riff emerges for a brief peak, before the track saunters back into its head nodding groove and rides on back to shore. Come get cleansed with Benny this summer. Anthony Gebhardt

Division Nine Councillor, Glenn Tozer, together with local music-scene legend Polly Armstrong (who also puts on Seaside Sounds and Palmy Sunday Fundays), are the driving forces behind curating the artist line up and delivering a memorable event experience. Says Glenn; "We get lots of requests to play our park, so narrowing the field down is pretty hard. Polly and I try to have an eye for new talent, and we both love a few local favourites, but mostly we just want punters to discover music they love with people they love to hang out with. Aside from great music, visitors can also check out our great restaurants and takeaways in Mudgeeraba Village, and make a night of it out west.

"We'll be making sure that attendees find something new about the Hinterland that they can come back to experience." One of the exciting acts to grace the upcoming Summertime Sessions is the vibrant and ever-busy indie pop damsel, Katie Who. With her irrepressible vocal and song writing talents, Katie, who won the inaugural Battle Of The Buskers event in 2014, will be performing on 22 November. While often playing shows with her talented four-piece band, this upcoming performance will see Katie in solo mode. We had quite an in-depth chat with Katie, which we delve into here. Can you tell us a bit about Katie Who, the band? And how do you differentiate when it comes to performing solo or with the band?

The band is often Katie and “who will be playing with her this time”? Ryan Grantham is an original member and he almost always plays the shows with me unless he is away. All the other members vary depending on who’s available. Often only getting one rehearsal in and having to really be present with each other on stage has helped me grow as a musician. It’s helpful to know so many talented people that step in when I need to play a band show. Playing solo has a more intimate, raw vibe, and I feel as though I can connect with the audience on an even deeper level. Of course, I do still love performing with the band, it’s a whole different feeling sharing the stage and it’s so much fun. Are you currently recording or about to release any new material? Yes - I AM. That is also the name of the song! I am currently working with Murray Burns from Rocking Horse in Byron. He was one of the judges from the Bluesfest Comp and reached out to work on this track with me. We are playing with a few versions and instead of rushing the release date, we’re making sure we are over the moon with the track. Anther single will be released a few months later. I have a stack of tracks I am working through that will be released sporadically on Spotify in the coming months. It’s important for me to release the backlog into the world so I can focus on my future sound, that is evolving as we speak.

of my faves, it always has an awesome vibe, a great sense of community and is run by a bunch of legends. It Is a huge backbone for the original music scene on the Gold Coast and an incredible support to local musicians. So pumped they have reopened their doors again! Do you have any other upcoming shows or tours in the pipeline you can tell us about? Thanks to the all-round legend Polly I am super grateful to be playing at all of the upcoming Sea Side Sound shows. The first of the Palmy Sunday Funday series on 3 November with Vaudeville Smash will be a time that I am really looking forward to, as well as the Kirra edition in March. Anthony Gebhardt

BLEACHED* ARTS WELCOMES ROSIE DENNIS TO THE HELM

M

eet Rosie Dennis. An experienced performer, writer and arts curator, this Pottsville-raised industry pro has moved back north after a long Sydney stint to take the reins of Bleached* Arts, both as CEO and Artistic Director of our beloved Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival.

Like many long careers in the arts, Rosie’s has traversed a decent amount of territory. “After moving to Sydney to study I directed a couple of shows independently at different theatres down there and I kind of toured overseas for six or seven years with my own work I wrote and performed, then I had our first child and was looking to bed down,” she tells us. “I then got a job as a curator at an arts centre in western Sydney, but I’ve always written and directed on the side. I’ve directed and curated in artist-run spaces all my career, and really loved it. I’ve never sat in one space of just being an artist, I’ve also worn a curator hat so a job as a Festival Director is really terrific for me.” Rosie’s return to the Gold Coast sees her as one of the City’s select few in a senior creative lead role. And not just the creative role of Artistic Director, but also CEO. It’s a great dual role to be in, she says. “I always give a great credit to boards of arts organisations, when the CEO is also the Artistic Director, because it means the organisation is artist-led, that it values risk and innovation that isn’t always driving to an economic return and that’s really exciting. I’m not saying there’s no financial responsibility, because also you’re the CEO, but it is exciting because there’s not many art organisations that do that, and I think it’s something to champion. I think we can all be a bit too risk averse.”

JINDA

Truth telling through film

Rosie is totally on board when it comes to the importance of supporting the arts to create an internationally recognised city, and helping the Gold Coast to become a cultural destination. By creating just three main hubs of activities during the 2020 festival, she hopes to keep the critical connection to place that forms the cornerstone of Bleach*, while also making it less of a spread to attend. “We’re kicking off with a residency lab on Chevron Island [one of the hubs] in November, for two weeks. So I’m very much looking to have “place” start to lead the work that artists are making.” As for the future?

“I’m really hoping to be able to expand what we do in the organisation… yes we curate and produce a festival and that happens two weeks a year, but outside of that two weeks we’ve got new work here, a one night party over there, a full program of events throughout the year. I want to claim our space as the leading independent arts organisation.” Natalie O’Driscoll

Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival runs from 17 to 28 April 2020 on the Gold Coast. Visit bleachfestival.com.au to keep up with event releases as they’re revealed. Visit blankgc. com.au to read the full interview.

ndigenous screen artist Jenny Fraser is preparing to tour her new independent film, ‘Jinda’, at international and local film festivals.

Jinda resulted from footage that Jenny filmed when she travelled 2000km across Australia, documenting the evolving relationship between the land and the tribal peoples.

“The film is about a woman that has many lifetimes over different eras, and how she maintains her culture in the ways of the day.” “The Jinda film is stitched together through a series of cinematic poems built around the characters travel through country, centuries and generations,” she said. Jenny was motivated to film and showcase her project on the Gold Coast because she has a very strong family and personal connection to the land. “Our family connection to this ancient land goes back about 1000 generations, and that is powerful, even more powerful than the dispersement of our people that was inflicted in recent times. On a personal level I have been reconnecting with our ancestral homelands since the 90s and one of the first screen culture events that I helped to organise was on the Gold Coast, the National Experimental Film Festival in 1989.” Jenny has Yugambeh roots of the Tribal area that is now referred to as the Scenic Rim area of the Hinterland of the Gold Coast, which provided historical basis and cinematic inspiration for the film.

“We filmed in places like Bilinga Beach, Tugun, Currumbin and in the mountains at places near Rathdowney, Numinbah Valley and Binna Burra,” she said. Jenny has spent years recording footage for the film and says she likes to go with the flow for her filmmaking process, but some interesting things did happen. “When we were filming at Kweebani Overhang it got dark and I made a wrong turn which meant that we were walking down the mountain, instead of up to Binna Burra Lodge. That kind of sums up the process of filmmaking – finding our way in the dark. All up that was a hike over 10km that night, and it hurt after a long day, so I have learned from that and now I try to walk at least 6km everyday so that I can be ready for the unexpected,” explained Jenny. The Jinda film has been through Principal Photography and is seeking funds for the next stage of the production. Once the film is completed, it will tour the festival circuit, especially in Indigenous Film Festivals. “The film will tour on the International Film Festival circuit. I also run the Solid Screen Festival, which has taken place on the Gold Coast and we hope to do a screening again and connect with locals, as this is the best way for other interested film makers to engage with screen storytellers in person, for sharing,” she said. “Our cast and crew are proud to bring this unique and powerful document of Indigenous womans stories to contribute to screen culture. The story of Jinda is part of our collective history, and the aim is to inspire more women toward truth telling.” Aimee Littleboy

CARLOTTA’S CHRISTMAS SPECIAL AT HOTA

INTRODUCING THE MINT ART HOUSE T he Mint Art House, situated on 55 West Burleigh Road, is a recently established collaborative arts studio, gallery and event space occupied by eight of the Gold Coast's most creative artistic types, including painters, artists, potters, sculptors and ceramicists.

When chatting with a few of the resident artists, including Nat Popovski, Andrew Cullen, Emily Rose and Judy, they were all extremely positive and enthusiastic about what it means for them to be involved in organically growing a collaborative, community-based arts space and creative hub. "It's really inspiring and motivating for us to be working side by side with each other, as opposed to being isolated in our own studios, or carports, as the case may be! And I think all of us being here together has really made us lift our game as artists. Everyone has really positive experiences, we get a lot of comments from people dropping in about how inspiring the space is, how friendly everyone is and how easy it is to connect with the people they meet here." In addition, the venue also plays host to a range of community workshops run by the artists, known as ‘Workshop Wednesdays’. The underlying philosophy behind these workshops, is to create an environment that acts as a shared conduit between artists and the public to facilitate an 'anyone can do it' mentality to being creative. The coming month sees a number of workshops already confirmed, including introductions to watercolour art, pottery and sculpture making. The space has also been holding movie nights, screening cult and critically exalted films from around the world that have shaped and driven cinema and culture over the decades. Moving forward, the artists are happy to ride the current momentum and go with the flow, growing the space, in the organic, creatively free flowing manner in which it has been evolving over the six or so months that it has been in operation. Anthony Gebhardt

The Mint Art House is open to the public to view or purchase the artists' works. For more information, go to mintarthouse.com or phone 0400 789 193 30

arlotta is nothing short of a living legend of the Australian entertainment industry. Styled the ‘Queen of the Cross’, she began her career in the long-running Sydney male revue Les Girls, as a singer, comedian, compere and not long after, lead star. Undergoing one of the earliest sex change operations in Australia in 1971 catapulted her even further into the limelight, where she very quickly became known and loved across the country for her honesty, infectious chuckle and ribald sense of humour.

Now, accompanied by award winning pianist Michael, Griffiths, Carlotta will celebrate Christmas as only she can, with Carlotta’s Christmas Special coming to HOTA’s summer festival, HOME. Folks may not realise, but Carlotta has actually been a Gold Coast resident for more than a decade. “I moved here nearly thirteen years ago now darling,” she recalls during our chat. “To be with my best friend actually. I fell in love with the place and I’ve been here ever since.” Sadly, Carlotta’s friend succumbed to pancreatic cancer a couple of years ago. And that’s not her only brush with the Big C. Last year, she saw a specialist after repeated urinary tract infections were not responding to antibiotics, and it turned out she actually had bladder cancer. “Look, we just keep an eye on it right now. I truly want to tell people to go and get yourself checked. I was fortunate I had it checked early.” Onto lighter subjects, I wonder how she keeps work fresh and exciting for herself, after such a long career in the industry. “I’m one of those fortunate people - I enjoy what I do,” she states. “I feel sorry for people who are in jobs that they hate - life’s too short for that. I’m lucky to be still doing it at my age.” A pioneer of the drag and transgender scene in Australia, Carlotta has seen her fair share of changes over the years. She’s impressed by some of the elaborate and artistic makeup and costuming that’s seen on many younger drag queens these days, who are getting more exposure through platforms like Instagram and Ru Paul’s Drag Race. “I think [the queens] are just wonderful today,” she gushes. “They’re like an exaggeration of us. We all looked like Las Vegas Showgirls, and today they’re over the top, they are Jessica Rabbit! They look better than the Kardashians anyway. Three foot tall and big fat bums, no thanks!” She laughs that throaty chuckle, and I giggle along irresistibly.

Carlotta is known for not pulling her punches, and her public opinions – as well as just her existence as a proud trans woman - have stirred up a variety of reactions over the years. But she couldn’t really care less. “I’ve got skin like a bloody rhino, it bounces off me,” she dismisses. “These trogs today [Editor: we think she meant “trolls”] can just get off the planet! Go and get a job, it’s just ridiculous they’ve got nothing to do but sit around on social media you know.

“I just say ‘Please don’t start on me, my mouth would clean you up in five seconds flat.’ You know I’m the drag Joan Rivers, darling.” Carlotta’s Christmas Special is part one woman show, part Christmas Special. There’ll be music, glamour, and plenty of her trademark humour. At 76, Carlotta is still working regularly, and can’t envision ever wanting to give it up. “When the curtain comes down, I’ll come down, darling,” she declares. “As long as I can give ‘em a laugh, I’ll be on that stage.” Natalie O’Driscoll

Have a laugh with the Queen of the Cross when she features stories and songs from her 50 years on the stage at Carlotta’s Christmas Special, running on Sunday 15 December in the Lakeside Room at HOTA, as part of the HOME festival. Tickets start at $45 and are available from hota.com.au.

THE ADVENTURES OF ADAM HILL

L

ife’s about dreams. Some people only dream, while others work hard to make them come true.

Adam Hill, owner of local enterprise Magic Potion Kombucha, certainly has. After having a dream of riding in the desert, he hopped on his dirt bike at his home in Currumbin and rode to Uluru and back. “Two years later, I was trying to beat the solo record for crossing Australia at its widest part,” he tells me, outlining the route from Byron Bay to Steep Point WA. After a pretty eye-opening first attempt at the 5,600km 92-hour-straight record, the record remained a dream that he would spend the next few year chasing, a dream he trained for and faced death to attain, not to mention days of pain, discomfort and financial loss he endured. But what he achieved, many of us could only marvel over. Following a 4WD track across the desert through thousands of kilometres of dust across the Old Gun Barrel Highway, a near death experience hitting a kangaroo and physical fatigue took its toll. Having crossed almost every desert in Australia solo, on Adam’s return from his second trans-Australia record attempt, achieved in 95 hours straight, he decided to focus on business ideas. “It made sense to start a business that fitted in with my healthy lifestyle and wholistic health philosophy,” Adam says. While investigating business possibilities, Adam started making kombucha at home to include in his own diet as a pro-biotic. Demand for his kombucha grew through friends and, within twelve months of returning home, Magic Potion Kombucha was born.

RAGDOLL BAR & DINING LOUNGE 49 James St, Burleigh Heads Ph: 073184 8891

China in 221BC, where it was known as ‘The Tea of Immortality’. Regaining the public’s attention in the last ten years, kombucha is now a common product on supermarket shelves, however there’s a wide variation between products.

I

“Magic Potion Kombucha has gained traction with those people who want an authentic homestyle kombucha, as close to the real thing as possible,” Adam tells me, adding that freshly juiced ginger and turmeric are added to his kombucha just before it’s bottled. Because sugar is consumed during fermentation, each bottle contains only 3g sugar, or 12 calories.

After taking over the former ‘secret’ dining room, the first task of co-owner Kieran Jensen (who formerly managed The Fish House), was to open it up, giving visibility from the street, letting in the light and filling the dining area and bar with greenery. A new paint job, classic furniture, moody artworks by local painter Moty Grau, and the addition of table linen all added to the venue’s calming surroundings.

Magic Potion Kombucha is full-flavoured, a great balance between sweet and sour, with less carbonation than some other kombucha. “Not only does our kombucha introduce beneficial yeast, bacteria and enzymes into your gut, but because of its acid nature it draws out beneficial nutrients from the herbs so they become most easily digestible,” Adam says. Great taste, low sugar and healthy choices are only some of the reasons to choose this product over other more commercialised brands. Adam also supports recycling, giving customers $5 back per full case of bottles returned. What’s more, this is a local start-up company where you can meet the owner and maker and ask all those ‘k’ questions you want answered. “Buying local is investing local,” Adam says on his Instagram. We could also add: “When you support a local business, you're supporting a dream.”

Four years later, Adam bottles over 1,000 litres weekly at his Tweed factory, distributing to health food shops such as Mrs Flannery’s as well as direct through his website to loyal customers.

n its three years since opening, Ragdoll has proved to be a keeper in a scene that is too often transient.

“I wanted the venue to reflect a sense of elegance and sophistication, more like a restaurant than a cocktail bar,” Kieran tells us, “a place to enjoy exceptional food and wine.” It’s a setting that appeals to a mixed generation of diners; one equally suitable for an evening cocktail, lunch with friends or a special celebration. Ragdoll’s menu lists over a dozen entrées and mains, from Pan-seared free-range quail to Zucchini fritters served with polenta and black sesame dressing as entrée to Charred kangaroo or Korean crispy free-range chicken for main. It’s a menu designed to be shared. With Chef Baroch (BoBo) Shamis in the kitchen there’s an assurance of modern Mediterraneaninfluenced cuisine, delicious and pleasing to the eye without being overworked. Inspired by his recent trip to Israel, his parents’ birthplace, Chef BoBo has just returned home to the Gold Coast where he has lived for the past eighteen years. “We have such amazing produce here,” he says, “but often the food lacks flavour because it’s commercially mass produced instead of prepared by hand. For example, chips don’t come out of a packet,” he adds, referring to the bowl of hand-cut chips he’s seasoning ready to plate, itself a rarity on the

coast. “All our sauces, dips etc. are made in house,” he adds. With access to fresh seafood daily via the Tasman Star, and fruit and vegetables sourced daily from a local supplier, seafood is the star, comprising over half of the menu. Specials add extra delight to the menu with lobster, crab and duck featured when available. Several desserts and a cheese platter are on offer to complete the meal. To make the choice easier, Ragdoll presents a Signature Seafood Degustation menu for a minimum of two guests for $79pp including two drinks, an additional $25 for matching wines with each course. Ragdoll is also becoming widely known as the home of the $10 cocktail, all day, every day! There is also an admirable wine and beer list. A light and breezy venue by day, with candles lit, Ragdoll turns into date night territory at night, live music adding even more ambience to the dining experience. “There are not many places on the Gold Coast to get a dining experience,” Kieran notes, and it’s true. We have plenty of cafés, casual dining venues and bars, but try to think of a place where you can dine in comfort with tablecloths and serviettes, where conversation is not lost in a din of bar noise and you’ll be hard-pushed to come up with more than a handful of places. It’s fabulous to see this venue shine. With attentive service and excellent food, Ragdoll is a great addition to Burleigh’s burgeoning dining scene, one where traditional dining and the art of the table are valued, where we can enjoy a great meal, wine, a $10 cocktail or two, including the best espresso martini in town! CALM BEFORE THE STORM

A

fter spending the majority of 2019 traversing the globe chasing waves, local surfing sensation Pacha Light is home for a well-earned fourteen day break from the rigours of touring life, still letting the invitation for her new role as speaker for next year’s 6th Biennial Global Wave Conference sink in.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN UP DAY

Y

oung Gold Coast surfer Jay Occhliupo recently joined legendary big wave surfer Shane Dorian and a group of up-and-coming youth surfers from Australia on a remote beach on the Island of Hawai‘i for International Coastal Clean-up Day.

Knowing all too well the importance of the ocean and their fragile marine ecosystems, the group worked tirelessly over a weekend in September to make a positive impact on the beach. Joined by not-for-profit organisation Sea Cleaners, Shane, his son Jackson Dorian, Jay and the other youth ambassadors commemorated the 30th annual International Coastal Clean-up Day by doing their part to keep the beaches clean. As the Pacific Ocean connects Hawai‘i with Australia and New Zealand, it’s a reminder that our actions in Australia may have an impact on island destinations like Hawai‘i. September 21 2019 marked the 30th annual International Coastal Clean-up Day, and the participating youth saw firsthand exactly the effects of plastics and microplastics in the ocean. The clean-up was arranged by not-for-profit organisation Sea Cleaners, along with Billabong Australia who selected the Australian youth ambassadors, each being an up-and-coming surfer with a strong emotional connection to the ocean. “I feel like it is our responsibility to help leave the beaches cleaner than we found them. We need to take care of Hawai‘i’s beaches for those who are here after us, hopefully hundreds of years from now,” said Shane. “I think if we help set an example, future generations will be much more aware of how fragile our environment actually is. If enough of us care for our planet we can ensure that it’s in better shape going forward,” he continued. The project will be filmed and produced into a short documentary by National Geographic, set to be released in October 2019. In addition to the beach clean-ups, the students will also visit local schools to discuss sustainability and ocean health, as well as taking part in other activities with the local community.

"This year I have been full time on the QS and travelling and competing in those events, as well as training for the next one," Pacha told us, "then making sure I've got enough time to build that strength and recover. I've been working a lot on personal projects as well. I stopped school and tried to find wisdom in other forms by visiting grandmothers who dive to provide for their families in Japan and Korea. It has been amazing to have this whole other source of inspiration other than in the surfing industry." As one of the main speakers at the conference, Pacha says she is honoured and excited to be able to share her thoughts with others, but also allowing herself to soak up the atmosphere and better herself as a person. "I'd love to promote and give my perspective on the way that youth is given this whole responsibility of taking care of the places they love," she enthused, "and to provide that inspiration that everybody can make a difference.

“I want people to know that no matter how old you are you can make a difference, but also that we're so lucky to be able to go into the ocean every day. To have that element right there is something that nobody should ever take for granted."

“It's amazing to see that its coming full circle and people are becoming so proactive. It is one of the best things to look forward to and to know that we all have that hope and faith that the future can be turned around. People are so passionate and it's about sharing that connection and appreciation for the beautiful Mother Earth that we have." While those outside of her inner circle may see the life of a professional surfer as somewhat glamorous and carefree, Pacha insists that the reality - while still rewarding and exciting - is far from just sun, surf, and beaches. "It can be hard work," she laughed. "You are on such a high before and during the event but then there's that low crash at the end. Dealing with that mentally, emotionally and physically can play a big role. I've just come back from a huge leg with all those emotions that I pushed off because I knew I had my next contest coming up. “Surfing is one of those rollercoasters. It's such a young sport that the long term effect is yet to be understood. Physically the last couple of months has been draining with layovers at the airports and missed flights and timezones. It has been intense but at the same time, I wouldn't want it any other way. I'm so grateful to have this life and you take it all with a grain of salt - preferably saltwater (laughs)." After a brief - but welcome - opportunity to recharge, Pacha will return to the sport she has made her life in preparation for next year’s conference. "I've got the rest of the season of the QS underway and then through the summer will be training," she said. "The conference will be held just down the road from me so it will help to be in my local environment and being at home. There's a lot of travelling in the lead-up but for amazing opportunities and learning." Kris Peters

The Return of Opera Gold Coast

LOCAL ARTIST UP FOR NATIONAL PORTRAIT PRIZE T

he Doug Moran National Portrait Prize is the richest awarded art prize in Australia. The brief is for Australian artists to paint a portrait of someone known or unknown to them and to interpret that person’s look and personality. The thousands of hopeful entries are culled to semi-finalists, then a final 30 (all of whom receive $1000) and a finalist winner, who receives a whopping $150,000. In quite a career coup, Gold Coast artist Samantha Beau has been selected as a semi-finalist with her portrait ‘Maree Widow of a War Veteran’. We asked Sam to give us an insight into her career and her portrait of Maree, ahead of the approaching finalist announcement.

Why did you choose Maree as the subject? The reasons were many. She has been a nanny to my kids for 12 years and her husband Johnny was a returned Vietnam veteran. Over the years I have got to know Maree and Johnny. Johnny was quite depressed and negative after the war. Many war casualties are psychological and not physical. My son seemed to help him find the happy switch again and it was wonderful to see. I painted him for the Archibald 6 years ago and then he died later that year at 62 yo. Maree now soldiers on and seemed a perfect representative of a veteran’s widow. What have you tried to achieve with the portrait? Maree is indicative of many women her age. She married young and has stuck by her husband through thick and thin. Many soldiers that have returned from war zones, even peace keeping deployment, have unreconciled scars and hurts. The shrapnel of war is not always visible. It can penetrate into one’s soul and stay there, haemorrhaging joy until it is removed, and healing can occur. I think many don’t receive the guidance they need to do this important healing step.

I wanted to capture Maree’s happy disposition but pay tribute to the women she represents. Her silhouette reveals the veteran’s anguish of being alone, against a khaki toned horizon. Loneliness and despair are rife. What do you hope to achieve with the portrait and message? Well, winning will be a game changer for me and my three children. I have worked hard for many years and been a single parent has been a juggle. The prize would change our lives for sure. The other message is that I want to convey is one of gratitude. Gratitude for the men and women who have been to war to fight for our democracy and way of life, and for those who are married or partners to them. Natalie O’Driscoll

The finalists will be announced as this edition of Blank goes to print. The final winner will be announced on 30 October, 2019 on the portrait prize website. You can follow Sam on her Insta @Samantha_beau_ artist or order commissions through her website samanthabeau.com. She also has a solo exhibition at Art Post Uki from 27 Feb to 6 April 2020.

A

wealthy relative has just expired, the family gathers around the death bed squeezing out crocodile tears while frantically searching for the will. Things escalate when a rumour circles that there is no inheritance, in fact the money has been left to the church! Gold Coast 2019? Nope, Florence 1918!

So goes the premise of Opera Gold Coast’s next bold operatic tour de force, with November seeing them step up to the stage to deliver what promises to be their finest production yet, an innovative and vibrant reimagining of Giacomo Puccini’s ‘Gianni Schichi’.

Melanie Smart, one of Opera Gold Coast’s most active creative forces and performers, says of the process of putting together this performance: “We have been working tirelessly for months to bring this epic piece of work to life. Puccini’s music is fabulous, it will stay with you.”

Opera Gold Coast are a collective of creative enthusiasts whose mission is to bring the world of opera to people who may normally shy away from the traditional opera experience. In their own words; “We want to bring fantastic stories and amazing pieces of music in intimate, engaging productions, and to contemporary audiences.”

She’s also enthusiastic about it’s ability to engage and delight audiences who may not be traditional opera goers.

Their stellar work was recognised at the 2016 Gold Coast music awards, where they were nominated as finalists in the ‘event of the year’ category for their first production, a bold re-working of Guiseppe Verdi’s classic opera ‘La Traviata’ (the fallen woman), translated from Italian into English. This was followed in 2017 by another stellar reworking, this time of the seminal ‘Pagliacci’ (‘Clowns’). More known for the luscious romance and drama in opera block blusters La Boheme, Tosca and Madame Butterfly, Giacomo Puccini was at the height of his career when he created his only comic opera, ‘Gianni Schicchi’. This unique and hilarious work features one of history’s most iconic ‘arias’ (a song for one voice), the unforgettable “O mio babbino caro.”

“We are working hard to make opera accessible to modern Gold Coast audiences. I think a lot of people would be surprised by how much they’d enjoy live opera. We have found that most of our audience members have never seen an opera before, and they have been blown away by the experience!” Anthony Gebhardt

Opera Gold Coast’s performance of Gianni Schicchi, which will be presented in Italian with English subtitles, will be held at Helensvale Cultural Centre on 29 November at 7.30pm and 30 November at 2pm and 7.30pm. Hop over to Trybooking (BDXNR) for tix, or call 0401 889 616.

The Gold Coast’s most exciting new music, EDDIE RAY LOVES LIFE IN THE SUBURBS Local all-round artistic talent Eddie Ray has backed up his debut single from earlier in the year with the release of a stunning seven track EP titled ‘Life In The Suburbs’. It’s a confident, well written piece of work that showcases Eddie’s diversity while staying cohesive with help from some beautiful production. Funkdriven tracks like ‘Who You Wanna Be’, and ‘The Story’ transition between the stripped back ukulele ballad (‘Lost’) rounding out with the slow jamming EP closer ‘My Youth’. ‘Life In The Suburbs’ is a thoughtful collection of tracks that feels more like an album than an EP, and is well worth a listen.

CATCHY RELEASE FROM GRATIS MINDS Gratis Minds are the real deal. This threepiece hip-hop group from Cabarita have been releasing quality music and world-class video clips for the past few years and have just dropped their strongest single to date ‘Stride’. It’s an instantly catchy track that features all three MC’s effortlessly intertwining their flow over a beat that literally makes you want to ‘stride’ down the street. To get the full effect of how awesome these guys are, take a look at the excellent video clip for the track online.

PHIL BARLOW’S TRUE EVOLUTION BARBARA PRESTIA SPREADS THE LOVE There’s nothing quiet like a positive reggae tune to brighten up your day. Barbara Prestia’s latest release ‘Mumma Moon’ is simple and effective, spreading love with every note. The video is equally wonderful and will be sure to pick you up. Keep an eye on the gig guide for local upcoming shows.

PUNK ROCK IN THE CLASSROOM

AMELA HAS FOUND HER NEW SOUND A PRODUCTIVE YEAR FOR CHAVEZ CARTEL After releasing their debut EP ‘Lucky Lucky’ at the beginning of the year and recently lifting the roof off The Wallaby Hotel during their performance at Wallapalooza, Chavez Cartel are continuing their momentum with their new single ‘Love On The Run’. It’s a dark, grungy track channeling the sounds of early Marilyn Manson, complete with brooding vocals, a slow off-kilter beat and a big fuzzed out guitar-driven chorus. The lyrics match the tone, described by the band as a deranged love song that focuses on the darker more destructive side of love. You can catch Chavez Cartel performing at The Rompa Room on 8 November.

Following on from the release of her 2017 debut album ‘Somewhere In Between’ Amela has been exploring her sound, collaborating with a wide range of musicians and testing out different musical styles. Her latest release ‘Blame’ sees Amela really hit the mark, moving away from the acoustic folk sound she is known for and into the world of glistening electronic pop. Working with upcoming Gold Coast producer Josh Beattie she has created something quiet remarkable, a snappy pop song with all the makings of a high rotation commercial radio banger.

RAAM are an all-girl punk rock band who have released their first ever single before even graduating from high school. Recorded during class at the infamous Music Industry College in Brisbane, ‘Addicted To You’ is raw, hard hitting and rough around the edges like every good punk rock track. RAAM display musical maturity way beyond their years, which is no doubt a sign of future brilliance. RAAM are certainly ones to watch.

PARKER ROSE IS GOLD COAST’S STARBOY Parker Rose proves that he’s Australia’s answer to The Weeknd on his latest body-rolling banger ‘Bother Me’. After refining the track over 12 months and 20 different versions Parker Rose aimed to capture a confusing emotional rollercoaster through both the lyrics and the production. Complete with auto-tuned falsetto vocals and glitchy high-hat heavy backing beats the track is a sparking pop package.

Phil Barlow’s debut solo release ‘True Evolution’ was just that for the prolific Gold Coast artist. After beginning a spiritual and musical journey just over twelve months ago Barlow truly evolved from an untamed front man of a raucous blues rock band to an intimate and reflective low key musical story teller. The record is a true journey and must be listened to from start to finish, with an open mind and a pot of strong herbal tea. You can catch the tamer version of Phil Barlow live at Dust Temple on 17 November, and keep an eye on Blank’s website and socials for an upcoming full review by Anthony Gebhardt. POOR LITTLE THINGS DROP AUS ROCK EP Gold Coast via Switzerland based Aussie rock band Poor Little Things have just released their epic debut self-titled EP. Describing their music as “a flashback to a good time” Poor Little Things mix 70s & 80s Rock with a touch of glam, channeling the sounds of bands like The Divinyls and The Angels. The EP offers five heavy hitting tracks full of massive drums and meaty guitar sounds juxtaposed by clean female vocals and fluttering synths. The EP closes with the 6:37 epic ‘Street Cheetah’ leaving you hungry for a full length album.

LONG AWAITED MUSIC FROM BENNY D WILLIAMS Benny D Williams is a front-runner for the hardest working musician on the Gold Coast. He has become part of the furniture at many music venues here over the past few years and it’s common that you’ll see him playing several times over a single weekend. His hard work has translated in to a loyal fan base, all of which will be stoked with the announcement of a new concept album to be released in the coming months led by this upbeat new single ‘Cleanse Your Soul’. It’s a wonderfully recorded sun-shiny song about surf adventures with good friends, a perfect lead-in to the warmer months and an exciting sign for what’s to come on the new record. PACES KEEPS IT LOCAL ON LATEST COLLABORATION Paces is back with his first major release since his hugely successful 2018 sophomore album ‘Zag’. ‘Vertigo’ sees the Gold Coaster teaming up with Byron Bay local YORKE, a collaboration that’s been a long time coming according to Paces. The track was initially triggered by Yorke’s unique vocal tic, a kind of hiccupping sound. YORK recorded a sample of the hiccup and sent it to Paces, he worked on the idea over a one hour flight and arrived at his destination with the leading hook for ‘Vertigo’. Great story and a killer track.

CHLOE STYLER RELEASES UPLIFTING FOLK BALLARD The 2019 Gold Coast Music Awards finalist for Breakout Artist of the Year is continuing her hot streak with the release of ‘Patient Heart’. Taking less of her familiar country music vibe ‘Patient Heart’ could be described as an uplifting folk ballad, sitting somewhere between the styles of early Angus and Julia Stone and First Aid Kit. It’s a well-written song that’s been nicely recorded, another big step for up and coming Gold Coaster Chloe Styler.

ELLA FENCE JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER Gold Coast favorite Ella Fence is getting us super excited for her forthcoming debut album with the release of yet another stunning single ‘Love Me On Purpose’. Working once again with one of Gold Coast’s most sought after produces Brad Hosking, the pair have created a sonic masterpiece, full of wonderfully interesting sounds including layer upon layer of eerie vocal samples. It’s the kind of song that you want to hit play on again as soon as it finishes.

THESE IDLE HANDS RELEASE ALT-COUNTRY GEM These Idle Hands have to be Gold Coast’s best-kept secret. Their single ‘My Heart Left Long Before I Did’ is heart wrenchingly beautiful, flawlessly recorded and comparable to any popular alt-country / Americana song doing the rounds on the charts at the moment. Comprising of an all-star cast of Gold Coast musicians and recorded as the first single of a forthcoming album at Love Street Studios with Scotty French, These Idle Hands have too much talent to keep a low profile and we hope to see them melting hearts on the live scene very soon.

The track was set to be released on the band’s forthcoming album but they felt compelled to share it after hearing Greta’s speech. TRUE EVOLUTION FOR PHIL BARLOW

I wonder if he has any favourite tracks on the new album, and he muses for a while. “Live, I enjoy playing ‘Steady Love’ and people really enjoy that too, they sing along to it, and also ‘Sweet Sunrise’. I enjoy ‘True Evolution’, cause I guess it’s just the one song that captures the essence of the album.” His favourite lyric, however, comes from ‘Waiting For You’, one of the album’s singles released early this year. “It’s ‘Life told me to wait, so I’m waiting for you love’”, he recites. “It’s probably not the most amazing lyric,” he laughs. “But it was inspired by a real moment when I asked the universe for guidance, because I felt like I wanted a companion. It’s human nature for us to long for that union, where you bring out the best in each other. The universe responded for me to wait, to be still.” Phil’s openness and honesty is refreshing and engaging, but it’s been a process to get there, he admits. Image by Claire Dalton

I

t was always a howling good time when Phil Barlow and the Wolf prowled the stage. The bluesy, gritty rock quartet packed houses around South East Queensland for the last eight years. Now, keen to dial things back for a while, soulful leader of the pack Phil Barlow has taken a long, lone wolf journey inwards, producing his most heartfelt and personal work to date in the form of the aptly titled solo album ‘True Evolution’.

“It’s an inner evolution that made its way out into music,” says Phil when we catch up for our chat. “It’s about authentic expression. Music is also that portal for myself and fans – I hope it helps other people to traverse some of their blockages.” ‘True Evolution’ is Phil’s third studio album, and his most rewarding, personally. “Chasing goals and pursuing something can be good for short term accomplishment,” he says. “But I’ve learnt that true fulfilment is something deeper than that. Expressing from my heart and seeing others respond – that is very fulfilling.”

MEET VERUM

We recently had a chat with VERUM's lead singer and guitarist, Kaden Perkinson, to learn a bit more about the band and what they're up to. 36

“I guess earlier on I had insecurities and sometimes you hide insecurities in different ways, it gets expressed through the personality, maybe exaggerated elements of yourself. Now I’m about sharing some heartspace, and being more accepting of myself.”

“I like to keep it raw,” he says. “I love that that vulnerability, and I feel that people are responding to the power of simplicity.”

‘True Evolution’ will be available on Spotify and Apple Music from 6 November. You can catch Phil performing live at his Gold Coast launch show at Dust Temple Currumbin on 17 November. Keep an eye on Phil’s socials for video releases.

over a year now and we have enjoyed every minute of it. We wanted to approach the music scene from a different angle do it on our own (no agents, no managers).

gig was one of our most recent ones, at the Coolangatta Hotel (7 September), playing alongside high school friends We All Drive to celebrate the release of 'Placebo'. We had way too much fun and played for an awesome crowd. We also smashed out a collaborative song together. n-the-rise Gold Coast three piece, VERUM, are rapidly making their mark on the local music scene off the back of their hard hitting, blues/rock/punk infused sound and energetic live performances. Having recently dropped their punchy debut single, 'Placebo', the guys are working towards further developing their self-produced sound over the coming twelve months.

Phil is taking it back to basics with his live shows; Man plus acoustic guitar plus a stomp. An accomplished poet as well as singer, songwriter and guitarist, Phil likes to sprinkle the live sets with some of his original poems as well. He’s keen to foster an environment where people are not just watching a show, but are somewhere that enables them to drop into a meditative, relaxed, introspective space. And so far, it’s definitely working.

Can you give us a rundown on the VERUM story? VERUM as a band came about when Logan Taylor, Zane Gillespie and I decided to go from making noise in my garage to doing it on a stage. We all met at high school with Logan and I doing our own band thing with different people, like Joel Sims and Tom Hayes. We realised down the track that we wanted something different and ended up writing songs with Zane and it just felt right. We have been playing together for little

‘Placebo’ was a song I had written for a close friend of mine who had been struggling with some real rough events both at home and with his long-term girlfriend. I wrote the song as a bit of a 'pick me up' dedicated to him to help convey the message that "life's too fuckin' short and we can't waste time dwelling on things". The song somehow became this message to anyone who might be struggling to just take a step away and enjoy the little moments we have. It’s the first song I had ever written, so I figured it would be a little bit of sweet irony for it to be the first song we released. Which venues can we typically see you strut your stuff in the live realm? And what's been your most memorable live show/ experience to date? We tend to play shows all around the place from the Gold Coast to Brisbane - we often land gigs at the Coolangatta Hotel, Rics Bar and Vinnies Dive. Our most memorable

A true evolution, indeed. Natalie O’Driscoll

Are you working on any new material? And what's in store for the band for the rest of 2019 and beyond? We have another single ready to go, which is a little different to our first release. It's a nice slow blues song that I hold dear to my heart. We are currently planning a music video and confirming a release date for it, which should hopefully be before the New Year. I produced both singles, which was a lot of fun but I wanna collaborate with other producers and artists in the new year, to help define ourselves a little more. Anthony Gebhardt

Be sure to keep an eye out on VERUM's social media and catch them when they're next pumping out their energetic ruckus at a venue near you.
