Oktoberfest has been a long-standing tradition here at Fort Bliss, yet year after year the same question is asked, “Why is Oktoberfest in September?” It’s a valid question that requires a historic answer.

Oktoberfest began in October 1810 in Munich, Germany. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the wedding of Prince Ludwig – later to become King Ludwig I – to Princess Therese of SaxonyHildburghausen. The celebration lasted a week, and Oktoberfest – as we know it – was born.

The event grew over the decades, from one week to three weeks, involving horse races, beer tents and amusement rides. As the festival grew the dates also shifted. In Germany, the weather is much nicer in September, so by moving the event from October to September, visitors were able to enjoy the gardens and take leisurely strolls much longer without feeling chilly.

Just like Munich the weather in El Paso is perfect in September, so get your tickets and get ready to raise your stein and shout PROST!

The 7th Annual Fort Bliss Oktoberfest will be held Sept. 17-19 at Biggs Park. We are sure our celebration will not disappoint. Tickets are $25 and includes entry and a commemorative 2021 beer stein. Beer is not included but with prices $10 and under for one liter fill-ups you can’t beat it! Tickets go on sale Aug. 10 at Leisure Travel Services (LTS) inside Freedom Crossing, at Underwood Golf Complex or online at eventbrite.com.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Relocation Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. The first 100 people to purchase tickets at this event will receive a $5 discount per ticket. This is a great reason to check out the Relocation Fair and to get your tickets at the same time.

All three days will have entertainment by Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express and performances by Fort Bliss’ very own German Air Force Schuhplattler Dancers. Traditional German beer, delicious food, snacks and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Sunday will also include food, dancing, jumping balloons and other family fun activities. Oktoberfest is open to Fort Bliss and the El Paso community. Gates open at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday night, open to patrons 18 and older only. Sunday is a free family day from 12 to 5 p.m., tickets are not required.

So, dust off your dirndl and lederhosen and make sure to get your tickets quick. There are only 1,500 tickets for each night and after the year we’ve had they will NOT last!
