Oktoberfest or September-fest? BY MICHELE WIERNICKI FAMILY & MWR MARKETING
Oktoberfest has been a long-standing tradition here at Fort Bliss, yet year after year the same question is asked, “Why is Oktoberfest in September?” It’s a valid question that requires a historic answer. Oktoberfest began in October 1810 in Munich, Germany. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the wedding of Prince Ludwig – later to become King Ludwig I – to Princess Therese of SaxonyHildburghausen. The celebration lasted a week, and Oktoberfest – as we know it – was born. The event grew over the decades, from one week to three weeks, involving horse races, beer tents and amusement rides. As the festival grew the dates also shifted. In Germany, the weather is much nicer in September, so by moving the event from October to September, visitors were able to enjoy the gardens and take leisurely strolls much longer without feeling chilly. Just like Munich the weather in El Paso is perfect in September, so get your tickets and get ready to raise your stein and shout PROST!
