Just Try It: Dining ‘Al Fresco’

This is such an exciting time of the year, because it is a great opportunity to enjoy summer evenings in a cool outdoor dining space. Who doesn’t love to relax while having food or drinks on a nice outdoor patio? Personally, I enjoy fresh air, casual style and summer ambiance, so dining outdoors is a perfect setting for me to unwind. If you are searching for amazing food and a place that offers patio seating, look no further than Samuel Adams Pub located inside the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. I have recently visited the pub with my husband, and we had such a wonderful time! When you step outside to the patio, you get to admire a gorgeous view of the Franklin Mountains. I admit I enjoy this view a lot, it always makes me feel energized. The pub’s menu includes food inspired by Sam Adams beer-infused recipes. You will find a selection of tasty starters to include wings, fried pickles or

loaded nachos. There is also a variety of sandwiches and flat breads to choose from to your liking. If you fancy seafood, you will satisfy your craving with a few seafood options on the menu. Fitness enthusiasts will be happy to know that there is a choice of green salads. We tried out some dishes, and I admit that my absolute favorite is the Adam’s Burger, unquestionably the star of the menu. Nothing tastes better than a juicy beef patty between a bun with extra fixings and a nice cold drink on a warm summer evening, simple yet delicious. My husband enjoyed spicy wings served with your choice of sauce. On another visit, I tried the beer-battered cod fish served with homemade tartar sauce. It was delicious! I devoured it with much pleasure. Sam Adams Pub offers a great food experience, and with a delicious menu, friendly staff and a nice casual ambiance. My husband and I found ourselves planning our next night out before we even finished our drinks. This pub is a good place for a laid back dinner with friends or dressed-up date night. Having travelled to many places in Europe, I have always enjoyed eating on an outdoor patio. Therefore, I was @blissmwr

thrilled to find out that there is such a cool and pleasant hangout spot here on Fort Bliss. This inviting patio provides a perfect backdrop for events or functions, too! You will be delighted to know, the Sam Adams’ pub hosts, Yappy Hour, a free monthly themed-event. Friendly dogs and their owners are invited to come and socialize over a brew while pups mingle over treats and toys, it’s like a small “pawty.” What’s not to like about that? So, make sure to mark your calendar for the upcoming dates on July 15, Aug. 19 and Sept. 16, and do not miss the “pawty.” If you are looking for a breezy outdoor place to dine where Mother Nature provides its own atmosphere and great views, or if you prefer to dine indoors and experience an authentic pub atmosphere, Samuel Adams is your spot. I found the pub to be a quiet place to cool down and have a nice dinner amid my daily busy schedule. If you do decide to just try it, make sure to check out current safety protocols to keep yourself, as well as those around you, healthy and safe. For more information about Samuel Adams Pub or Yappy Hour events, visit bliss.armymwr.com. If you are planning to host a party and are searching for an indoor or outdoor venue, call the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center at 915-744-1171.

Enjoy!

POOL SAFETY TIPS

Hello friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! It seems that the weather has been getting hotter and hotter every day. You know what that means? Play time in the pool! As most pet parents know, safety is important around the pool. First thing’s first, be sure to teach us how to swim. Yes, that’s right, some dogs do not naturally know how to swim and prefer not to be in the water. It’s best they learn how to swim and feel comfortable around water. Put on a life vest that fits them correctly. I put one on that was too big for me and I started to tilt forward in the water! Don’t worry, my human was right next to me and found a more suitable life vest. After putting on a life vest, choose a quiet shallow area in the pool and lead them into the water. Stay close to the edge and stay as long as they are enjoying it. If they don’t want to go in, don’t force them. When your dog paddles with their front legs, help lift their hind legs to show them how to float. Other good safety tips to know are always rinse off your pup after swimming, dry your dog’s ear

@blissmwr

completely — this will help prevent infection, learn canine CPR and never leave us alone in the water. With these helpful tips you can put them to good use at Doggy Swim Day! Join us, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as my friends and I get the whole Community pool to ourselves! The cost is $2 per dog and guess what … our humans get in for free! All well-behaved, vaccinated furry friends are welcome to attend, but remember only the doggy and their parents are allowed in the pool. Let’s face it, last year was a blast having our humans at home with us, but I missed having our annual Doggy Swim Day. But keeping my human safe from a virus was more important. This year, we are looking forward to seeing the best swimsuit, best trick and best look-a-like contestants! There will be lots of prizes and giveaways to win. Get ready to jump in this year!

grilling for the summer BY EDWARD ARRIOLA

FAMILY & MWR SPECIAL EVENTS

For those of you who have been following my journey to become a better cook, you know my love for simple recipes that involve the whole family. In today’s article, Ingredients/Supplies I decided to bring out the grill master in me. We’ll ¼ CUP SOY SAUCE start off with a Hawaiian ICE JU LE Chicken Kabob Recipe that’s PP EA PIN P ¼ CU delicious and versatile for even the pickiest of people 3 TABLESPOONS HONEY in your family. Then, we will OIL 2 TABLESPOONS SESAME finish off with a dessert, a twisted take on the s’more, so WDER ½ TEASPOON GARLIC PO it’s “S’more Goodness.” Both recipes are simplistic and can NGER ¼ TEASPOON GROUND GI easily be changed to add your own personal touch. ¼ TEASPOON SALT Kabobs have always been PPER PE K AC BL ND OU GR ON one of my favorite dishes! They ¼ TEASPO fall under the one item meal ARCH 1 TABLESPOON CORNST category, meaning you don’t really need sides to go with it, it’s ICKEN BREAST 4 BONELESS SKINLESS CH filling on it’s own. It also means less work and a greater pay off. S ER PP PE 3-4 BELL Here is a list of items needed. 1 LARGE RED ONION Directions: To marinate any type of meat it KS 2 CUPS PINEAPPLE CHUN should sit overnight for the best flavor. In a mixing bowl, mix soy E GRILL COOKING SPRAY FOR TH sauce, pineapple juice, honey, sesame oil, garlic powder, ground ginger, salt, SKEWERS ground black pepper and cornstarch. Feel free to add other seasonings to fit your taste. I used some Morton SeasonAll just to round it out. Pour a cup of the marinade into a separate container and store in the fridge for later use. Chop the chicken breast (1½ inch thick) and soak them in the page 10

remaining marinade mixture overnight. When you are ready to get started, preheat the grill to a medium heat. I learned that if you are grilling with wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes to an hour. The step is important to the process so the skewers don’t burn as you grill. Chop up your vegetables (1½ inch thick) and start making your kabobs. I went with a simple onion, meat, pineapple, bell pepper, meat, pineapple, onion design — but this is where your creativity can run wild. For my picky eaters, we created an all meat kabob, which also led us to some vegetable and fruit concoctions. Once you are finished putting together your beautiful works of art, it’s time to start grilling! Spray down the grill grates and place your kabobs onto the grill. Baste the kabobs with the marinade that you set aside in the separate container and turn at least every five minutes, making sure to baste as you go. Now, if you are anything like me, cooking chicken can be a daunting task. Though I enjoy chicken, I’ve been known to under cook it and create a monstrosity that no one should eat. I received a small tip from my Grill Master for the day, Kenny Brooks. Look at the juice that comes from the chicken, if it’s clear, it’s cooked. Now when I tell you this was delicious, that is no exaggeration. I look forward to the next time I make this dish, I would like less sweet and more heat. Now for a sweet treat that’s fun to eat! This dessert is an interesting take on the s’more. All you will need is a flour tortilla, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, graham crackers, and foil. First you cut @blissmwr

out a piece of foil that is bigger than your tortilla. Place your tortilla on top and start to assemble your burrito. Crush up your graham cracker and place it on half of your tortilla, place your chocolate chips on top of the graham cracker crumbs, and finish with a sprinkle of mini marshmallows. Then start rolling your burrito and try to keep all your ingredients inside, once done, roll it into the foil. Let’s be real, for me, it took a couple of tries before I became a master at it. Once you become a master at it like me, put the foil dessert on the grill for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping it at the halfway point. This is a dream for someone that has a sweet tooth! There was an explosion of sweetness from the different ingredients, but the highlight of the dish is definitely the marshmallow. It always bothered me that there was zero control when roasting your marshmallow over a campfire. You either didn’t cook it well enough or it was burnt beyond recognition. Cooking it within the foil, however, caramelized it to perfection! The chocolate paired with it beautifully, but I probably should’ve added more crushed graham crackers. The tortilla’s purpose was to hold in all the flavor and create less mess, which I recommend 100%. I am enjoying my journey to become better as a cook and look forward to my next challenge. Food has a very special way of bringing people together, creating an opportunity to learn about one another. Whether you are cooking together or sitting down for a meal as a family, enjoy each moment and grow together. Just my Food for Thought. JUL | AUG | SEP

FAMILY & MWR SPONSORSHIP & ADVERTISING

I would like to take this time to reflect on the past year. In the sponsorship and advertising office, we had to adjust and adapt quickly, outside circumstances put a great big halt on normal operations. With the help of our, ever so generous partners, we were able to keep trekking along and we continued to bring fun to our Fort Bliss community. In light of things, we have had sponsors who generously contributed to bring what we could to our patrons. Without them, we would not have been able to bring our community the events that we did. I am excited! I want you to get excited and geared up for the what’s coming for the remainder of the year. We are excited to say, “Events are on the way!” First up will be our Pop Goes the Fort 10th year anniversary, with musical talents by our very own 1st Armored Division (1AD) Band and the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. “YES,” there will be fireworks! Thanks to our biggest supporter USAA, we will have an even bigger and better fireworks display this year. Did you know that USAA even supported us in 2020 when many facilities and programming were not open? With the help of USAA, we were able to bring 2020 fireworks that extended 100 feet higher for everyone to see near and far. This year, we plan to celebrate our 10th Anniversary Pop Goes the Fort event the way it should be commemorated. Again, USAA said, “we’ll do it!” The fun is just beginning, be on the lookout for many upcoming activities brought to you by the wonderful folks at Fort Bliss MWR along with the tremendous support from our amazing sponsors. Hope to see you July 4 at Biggs Park and at other upcoming events. As always, it makes our hearts happy to bring joy to this ever so deserving community!

In the spring issue of Bliss NOW, Just Try It columnist, Aneta Veedmont, wrote about her experience playing Disc Golf at the Underwood Golf Complex. Did you also know that Aug. 7 is National Disc Golf Day? National Disc Golf Day began on Aug. 2, 1974 in Rochester, New York. The city decided to turn their annual Disc Golf Championship into a big national championship to see how many people across the country would show up to play. They decided to call the event the “American Flying Disc Open.” In order to attract disc golfers from around the country, the winner would receive a brand new 1974 automobile. From that day forward, each year the city would mark the first Saturday in August National Disc Golf Day. The International Olympic Committee granted it full recognition in 2015 making Disc Golf a worldwide sport for Flying Disc Sports. Disc Golf even has its own governing body! The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is a membership-based organization that also serves as the governing body for the sport. Celebrate National Disc Golf Day at Underwood Golf Complex on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Patrons can pay $10 green fee to play a round (18 holes) of disc golf or $20 to include green fee and lunch. Not up for walking the course? You can rent a golf cart for an additional $14. Groups are limited to 4 patrons. If you can’t make it on Aug. 7, guess what … Underwood Golf Complex offers Disc Golf year-round! For $5, enjoy the game with friends, pay an additional $9 to play 9 holes with a cart or an additional $14 to play 18 holes with a cart. Scorecards and course maps are available inside the Pro Shop. Disc Golf is open to the general public and all ages. Children ages 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 915-568-1059.

Sunny days are coming for learning BY PAT LOPEZ FAMILY & MWR SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICE

While some students have become very receptive to virtual learning and even thrived, others have found it difficult. When students struggle, it’s often due to circumstances outside of their control, from internet access to their learning style. Students are often required to travel to extended family or a childcare facility, making it difficult to be consistent when logging in for classes or being left unsupervised. Let’s face it, the struggle is real. However, there’s a silver lining to all this, parents are the key to helping their children succeed by boosting their self-esteem. Have an open and honest conversation about how the child is doing with their course work, and if they are struggling, encourage them to reach out to their teacher. Teachers can provide information on tutoring programs and other tools the districts have to help students succeed. Parents can also help by remaining vigilant of their student’s progress and deadlines to ensure they are working at a good pace. Military families are encouraged to access tutor.com at no cost by logging in at www.tutor.com/military. Here is what you will find: • Scheduling and Organization • Setting Expectations • Study Techniques • Using Resources • Motivation and Goals • Managing Knowledge Gaps • Finding Balance As students return to traditional learning environments, they may feel a sense of connection with their teachers, campus staff, and peers that was lost during remote instruction. Communication during this transition is key to a student’s successful reintegration to the classroom. Traditional brick and mortar classrooms provide students with a sense of community where they can engage, interact and support each other. Students have immediate access to educational and technical resources, can meet with teachers before and after school, and have an opportunity to ask for clarification

and received immediate feedback during class time. Physical presence enables teachers to recognize cues if a student is struggling, allows students to build a network of friends, and interact face-to-face in a classroom setting. Families have access to vast resources to help assimilate back to a more traditional learning environment, many of which can be found at the Military Child Education Coalition, National Military Family Association, and Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission. The School Liaison Office wishes you much success, good health and a great and safe summer.

Purple Star schools continue to show support BY SIMONE HENDRICKS

FAMILY & MWR SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICE

More than 1.2 million military-connected students face issues surrounding school transition. It is a top priority for families as they navigate from duty station to duty station. Students often face issues such as gaps and overlaps in curriculum, different graduation requirements, course placement disruption, and many other hurdles when changing schools. Students’ also experience social and emotional challenges associated with relocation, such as leaving familiar social support systems and activities behind, to start over in a new community. Once a military family has been notified of their new duty station, finding the right community and school for their children becomes a priority. Parents will spend hours researching educational opportunities, in an effort to find the right school that understands the unique lifestyle of military-connected students, while offering quality education and effective resources. How do you know if the school you choose understands these challenges? Will they be well equipped to meet the students’ needs, both academically, socially and emotionally? Transitioning for families is now an easier task, because certain schools have been designated as military-kid friendly. States and school districts recognize them as Purple Star Schools. These schools have put in the effort to understand and show support to military-connected students. Families can now search for schools with these special designations.

page 18

blissNOW

JUL | AUG | SEP

The Purple Star Campus Designation recognizes school district and open enrollment charter school campuses that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families. Purple Star campuses have to demonstrate their commitment to provide a military-friendly environment by appointing a campus-based military liaison as a point of contact for military families who can assist with transitional issues. Professional development for staff, to better understand the needs of military students and a transition program for students, designed to help with integration, are also among the many benefits Purple Star campuses will offer incoming families. Easy access webpages, that includes information for military families are a must for Purple Star schools. This great tool will allow transitioning families to find crucial information before they set foot in a new community. These are only some criteria to determine which campus can display a Purple Star as a symbol of a military-friendly campus. The 2019-20 school year marked the first year that Texas campuses could apply for the Purple Star Designation. Region 19 currently has over 50 campuses across three districts that have already earned that designation, with more campuses applying this year. How a Purple Star campus can help ease transition for military families is quite simple. Campuses that already have resources and programs in place to aid incoming youth will be able to remove many challenges from the start and provide a welcoming environment for transitioning students. Parents that are aware of the Purple Star designation can narrow their research and use this as a compass as they seek out the best fit for their students. To find out if your school has been designated as a Purple Star campus visit https://tea.texas.gov/abouttea/news-and-multimedia/correspondence/taa-letters/ purple-star-campus-designation-awardees or visit bliss. armymwr.com, search School Liaison. Hourly care for your children BY AMY PARKER

FAMILY & MWR FAMILY CHILD CARE

Army Family Child Care (FCC) is a program that allows military spouses to provide quality childcare in their on-post homes. FCC often serves as a second home for many children. Providers get to know children personally, resulting in a more comfortable “home away from home” experience. The FCC programs at Fort Bliss provide full-day, part-day, before and after school, evening, weekend, special needs and longterm mission-related extended care for children ages 4 weeks to 12 years old. Currently in the COVID-19 environment, FCC is the only option for parents looking for hourly care services. Additionally, FCC provides the advantage of low child to adult ratios, flexible hours and affordable fees. All FCC providers have passed extensive background checks, cleared inspections from all safety agencies on post and have successfully passed training courses required by the Army. The FCC office staff, CYS Administration and Garrison leadership regularly inspect the homes to ensure children are provided with the best quality care and environment.

@blissmwr

Many military spouses may not be aware that the Department of the Army and Child and Youth Services has defined a limit on the childcare hours that can be provided in on-post housing. A 10-hour childcare limit is enforced to protect children from being in unregulated childcare settings on a regular basis. This means, that any family member living in government quarters providing childcare for more than 10 hours per week on a regular basis, must be certified as a Family Child Care provider. “Ten child care hours means one child for 10 hours per week, two children for 5 hours per week, etc.” Becoming a FCC provider on Fort Bliss is a great opportunity for military spouses looking for a career. Operating a licensed home is also a very portable business, easily transferring to the next installation. It pays to be a certified FCC provider! They receive free training and support, free referrals, free materials and equipment and providers qualify for childcare subsidies. Prospective providers can call 915-568-4198, or visit the FCC office at 3503A Story Road to pick up an application today!

WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM WINS AGAIN BY MELISSA HUFF

FAMILY & MWR TENNIS CLUB

The Fort Bliss 3.5 Women’s 40 and over team, captained by Patricia Uribe, went 7-1 this season securing their number one spot for the Greater El Paso USTA tennis league. They were able to participate in the Southwest Sectionals being held in June at the Reffkin Tennis Center and Fort Lowell Park Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona. The team consists of Captain Patricia Uribe and teammates Melissa Huff, Sandra Torres, Cheryl Ledford, Yzahiti Angulo, Emily Garrison, Guadalupe Castillo, Sarah Najera, Claudia Dominguez, Judith Martinez, Lisa Barnett and Yolanda Zuverza. While this accomplishment certainly stands alone, the Fort Bliss 3.5 Women’s team is much more than a group of great tennis players. They learn from each other and grow in both their tennis ability, perseverance, and resilience — each time they enter the courts. The team learns how to fight until the end and never give up — from their singles player, Sarahi Najera, who went 6-1 this season. Emily Garrison

pushes the team to cheer each other on and have confidence in each other. While Guadalupe Castilla, always goes out of her way to check on her teammates and uses her crafting skills to create amazing “Fort Bliss Tennis” masks and gear. These are just a few examples of the ladies who make this team feel like family. The team wins together and loses together. After a match, most teams turn in their scores to their captain and leave for the day. But, the Fort Bliss 3.5 team always sticks around until the last match is played, cheering on wins and consoling each other during losses. New duty stations can be isolating and lonely. Fortunately, at Fort Bliss Tennis it has given players an opportunity to be active and healthy, but it has also given them the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships. So, if you are interested in tennis, reach out to the Fort Bliss Tennis Club & Fitness Zone and get connected with a development class or a team. For more information, call 915-569-5448.

Ironworks recognizes strength First 1500 Pound lifter BY TONY MCCLURE FAMILY & MWR IRONWORKS GYM

For the past six years, Ironworks East and West has offered an activity to Active-Duty Soldiers and DoD employees called the 1000 Pound Club Challenge. The challenge is to lift as much weight as possible in the squat, bench press and deadlift. All three lifts are part of a powerlifting competition that recognizes maximal strength. The lifter gets three total one rep max attempts in each lift. Until recently, 1500 pounds had eluded patrons at both facilities. This club was created to boost morale for Soldiers and establish competition between the two Ironworks locations. Managers want to be able to brag about whose facility has the highest number, even Soldiers get to brag about their accomplishments with their name on the board and of course their free t-shirt. It also pushes Soldiers to challenge themselves to hit their goals or to maybe beat the current highest weight. The 1500-pound lift is no longer unattainable. In March Haakeem Harris, who finished Advance Individual Training (AIT) and will soon be joining his unit, was the first person to total more than 1500 and finished with a 1560 total. “My motivation for lifting is to get stronger, so I can overcome my job’s physical challenges,” Harris said. “My favorite lift is definitely the deadlift. I’ve been training for 7 years.” Haakeem also issued a challenge to others to topple his total, so he can return the favor! Both Ironworks locations are open and running after a long shutdown due to COVID-19. They are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. but are currently only allowing Active-Duty Soldiers to train and are running at a restricted 50% capacity. For more information, call Ironworks West at 915-568-2892 or East at 915744-5201.

5 Things to improve your ACFT score BY COACHES JEREMY MCGOWAN, DEVIN CAIN AND TYLER KOEHLER SUSTAINMENT BRIGADE MULESKINNER HOLISTIC HEALTH AND FITNESS (H2F)

As the Army is transitioning away from the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) and adapting to the new Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), many units and Soldiers ask us for advice as to how to improve their ACFT training and scores. Below are a list of five things that we, as strength coaches have been implementing at 1st Armored Division (AD) Sustainment Brigade that we have found beneficial. Strength Training: Perform strength training workouts a minimum of 3 times per week, including movements such as the back squat, trap bar deadlift, bench press and chin-ups. These lifts are some of the most effective at developing the necessary strength required for the ACFT. Less miles: Decrease overall running mileage to a

@blissmwr

maximum of 3 miles per week, while increasing pace as capable. All too often we find that Soldiers are performing way too much running, and it is negatively impacting their ability to properly recover and develop the strength and power needed for the new ACFT. In this case, more is not better. Power Training: Make power training part of your strength training workouts. Developing explosive power is crucial for the standing power throw event, and for an overall healthy Soldier. Utilizing different medicine ball throw variations, plyometric variations, and jumps can all be done to accomplish this. Improve your work capacity: Having the ability to continue going at a consistent pace is vital for the ACFT, especially during the sprint-drag-carry, where we see many Soldiers begin to struggle. Pick 3-5 movements and run through them for a 10-15 minute circuit at the end of your lifting session. Resources: Utilize the Sustainment Brigade Muleskinner Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) team to help you develop a comprehensive program that includes all of these things. All of the Brigades here on Fort Bliss have an H2F team available to them that includes strength coaches. Take advantage of them to help you put together a program for your unit that encompasses all of these things. JUL | AUG | SEP

FEEL AT HOME WITH LOGAN HEIGHTS PFC BY ANNA SUTTON

FAMILY & MWR LOGAN HEIGHTS PFC

Logan Heights Physical Fitness Center (PFC) is the best kept secret of Fort Bliss! Those who have found this little gem, know what I’m talking about. Logan PFC is located up on the hill off Ellerthorpe Avenue and it’s full of rich and amazing history. It’s the only physical fitness center located off post. As a Fort Bliss MWR Sports Fitness and Aquatics employee for nearly 7 years, I’ve had the honor to work at Logan for five of those years. During that time, I have had the honor to meet so many Retired, Active-Duty Soldiers, Family members and employees, who have seen all the changes here. I’ve been fortunate enough to hear all of their awe-inspiring stories. For many years, basic training and Advance Individual Training (AIT) were conducted at Logan Heights. During World War II, Logan Heights housed German and Italian POWs, after Italy capitulated they had to be separated. The Germans were then housed in a tent city. Today, Logan Heights is a small community with an RV park, new housing and of course a local gym. Logan Heights PFC offers its visitors a facility that includes basketball and volleyball courts, a weight room with Selectorized strength equipment, free weights, a racquetball

@blissmwr

court, and various types of cardiovascular equipment. Logan Heights PFC is also the home of the Nathaniel A. LaCour Jr. Halloween Classic, which is one of the premiere basketball tournaments held in the city of El Paso. For many years, it has also been home of the Commander’s Cup independent sports league. It has not only been my place of work, but my second home for many years. My introduction to MWR began at Fort Hood, as a military spouse, when I walked into an MWR fitness center feeling very out of place, not knowing what to do or how to begin my weight loss journey. I met an MWR employee who changed my life. Since then I have made it my mission to give back to Family members and Soldiers like that one MWR employee did for me. There are just some days, we all need a place we can call home and work off the stress of the day. We want Logan PFC to be that place! Come visit us here at Logan Heights and meet the amazing staff who is by far the “Chickfil-A” staff of gyms. This year we are planning many events here at Logan, not just for Fort Bliss, but for the Logan Heights community as well. Come join us and see what Logan Heights PFC is all about! Logan Heights PFC is located at 4797 Ellerthorpe Avenue, for more information, call 915-568-5198.

What it takes to be a lifeguard BY FAMILY & MWR AQUATIC CENTERS

Fort Bliss Aquatics is filled with experienced staff who go above and beyond for Soldiers and their Families. Aquatics spans four diverse pools, each covering numerous opportunities for training, including Combat Water Survival Test (CWST) and Border Patrol Tactical (BORTAC), to recreational swims such as Pregnancy Physical Training (PT) and swim lessons for infants, children and adults. Fort Bliss Aquatic Centers set themselves apart by training the lifeguards to place first in regional lifeguard Olympics. Making sure the staff is certified and equipped to go the extra mile in any situation is crucial. Fort Bliss Aquatics is the only Army installation ever to engage and excel in the American Red Cross Examiner Program. As a result, they are now rallying other army installations to do the same. An element of their success is thanks to the Lifeguards, their attentiveness to detail and devotion to MWR’s mission pushes the team from exemplary to outstanding. Fort Bliss Lifeguards train to handle any circumstances thrown at them. To sharpen this adaptive nature adequately, they cycle through all four pools, guaranteeing each guard has practiced in varied conditions limiting stagnation. While all the lifeguards exercise all skills, specific collections pull particular skills in question more frequently. The Soldier Activity Center (SAC) pool implements lifeguards with planning, foresight, and out-of-the-box ideation. SAC pool provides opportunities to respond to weather-born distress and illnesses both to patrons and fellow lifeguards. The pool’s laid-back environment also allows for one-on-one customer service. The Fort Bliss Community pool specializes in family activities, lifeguards practice dealing with running water, slide attractions and younger patrons. Lifeguards get to practice basic first aid treating cuts and burns, and dealing one on one with children and their families. The Replica pool specializes in physical fitness training and recreational swim for anxious swimmers, such as swim lessons for all ages and wounded warriors, a program meant to provide low-impact physical therapy. @blissmwr

Finally, the Aquatics Training Center (ATC)- this pool endures the most commerce, hosting three separate collections within the walls. Lifeguards assigned here are taught docility and honing their talent to think on their feet. The ATC hosts many trainings and programs such as CWST and BORTAC. Such high-impact training pushes patrons to the limit, and the lifeguards need to respond effectively when required. Not all training at the ATC is as intense; for instance, the pregnancy PT and swim lessons offer unique situations, respectively. Lifeguards need to command a wide array of knowledge that allows them to respond appropriately. The cycling of lifeguards among pools enables our lifeguards to put the information taught to them into practice. Shaping their skills and techniques to discern, respond, and anticipate emergencies at all facilities as effectively as possible. While daily practicing is crucial, Fort Bliss Aquatics believe sufficient knowledge plays an equivalent if not more vital role in the success of the staff. With such high expectations put on lifeguards, developing quality of life characteristics such as responsibility, leadership skills, and learning opportunities for future careers is also heavily emphasized. Responsibility is an attribute that should be at the top of every lifeguard’s mind. By allocating important tasks to fellow lifeguards and providing personalized equipment, responsibility becomes second nature. Fort Bliss Aquatics takes pride in the work done alongside MWR and is exceptionally exultant of the lifeguards. Their unswerving array of leadership, devotion, enthusiasm to learn, and responsibility in all aspects of their job, from certifications to surveillance. These and countless other character traits that make up Fort Bliss MWR lifeguards provide the best experience for all patrons. Leading by example for other aquatic centers by going above and beyond in competitions, implementing state-of-the-art training, and providing specialized classes, for Soldiers and their Families. This is what it’s all about for the Aquatics team. To learn more about becoming a lifeguard or for more information, call 915-741-5901. JUL | AUG | SEP

Oktoberfest or September-fest? BY MICHELE WIERNICKI FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Oktoberfest has been a long-standing tradition here at Fort Bliss, yet year after year the same question is asked, “Why is Oktoberfest in September?” It’s a valid question that requires a historic answer. Oktoberfest began in October 1810 in Munich, Germany. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the wedding of Prince Ludwig – later to become King Ludwig I – to Princess Therese of SaxonyHildburghausen. The celebration lasted a week, and Oktoberfest – as we know it – was born. The event grew over the decades, from one week to three weeks, involving horse races, beer tents and amusement rides. As the festival grew the dates also shifted. In Germany, the weather is much nicer in September, so by moving the event from October to September, visitors were able to enjoy the gardens and take leisurely strolls much longer without feeling chilly. Just like Munich the weather in El Paso is perfect in September, so get your tickets and get ready to raise your stein and shout PROST!

Preparing your federal résumé BY DENISE CAROTHERS FAMILY & MWR EMPLOYMENT READINESS PROGRAM (ERP)

Have you ever applied for a federal position and received the dreaded email stating “you were not referred for this position.” As you sit back in your chair, you wonder, “what did I do wrong?” Sometimes résumés that are submitted may not highlight the qualifications and experience needed or they are missing important keywords. Maybe some of the documents needed to support the résumé are missing. Does your federal résumé need to be a certain number of pages in order to make it competitive? No, however, you want to make sure it is long enough to show you have the experience and qualifications needed to perform the job. KEYWORDS: Keywords are words or short phrases that relate to particular requirements for a job. They are the knowledge, skills, abilities, credentials, and qualities a hiring manager looks for in a candidate. When a hiring manager looks through a pile of résumés, he or she scans each of them to find these keywords. You can

find the keywords listed within the job announcement. DOCUMENTS: The documents needed to support your résumé can vary. Some of those documents are transcripts, letters of recommendation, and certificates of training. If you are a Veteran, you will need your DD-214 and possibly an SF-15. If you are the spouse of an Active-Duty service member, you will need the Military Spouse Self-Certification form along with a copy of your marriage license and PCS orders. The Employment Readiness Program (ERP) at Army Community Service (ACS) can teach you how to write your federal résumé. ERP can show you how to read a federal job announcement, how to pull out those “keywords” and apply them, and how to tailor your résumé for every position you want to apply for. In addition, ERP will also review the online questionnaire, provide guidance on how to answer it and show that experience in your résumé as well as discuss the documents you need to submit. Allow the ERP Specialists to help you! They can also provide education and training on interviewing to include mock interview practicing. The ERP offers free services available to Military Spouses, Active-Duty Soldiers, Retirees, and all DoD ID cardholders. If you would like to schedule an appointment, call at 915-569-5838.

MON - FRI // 7:30AM-4:30PM

Since its inception in 1983, the AFAP remains the only such partnership between a branch of the United States military and its constituents. Issues can be submitted at the Garrison Army Community Service office or to a unit Family Programs liaison. The needs of the Army community remain in the forefront of Army Senior Leadership. AFAP is the primary tool to communicate the important issues facing Soldiers, Army Civilians, Families, Survivors, and Retirees. Information provided through the AFAP process gives commanders and leaders insight into current satisfaction detractors, quality of life needs, and expectations of Army constituents. Leadership uses the information to effect changes to improve standards of living and support programs. These changes foster a satisfied, informed, and resilient Army Community. Issues can be submitted online at bliss.armymwr. com search, “AFAP” or www.myarmyonesource.com.
