FROM SOLDIER TO OLYMPIAN:

The Relentless Pursuit of Glory

The day starts at 2am with another intense and purposeful day with a vigorous run and hearty breakfast to fuel the body for what lies ahead. Terrance’s focus transitions from athlete to educator as he prepares to teach and ensure his students receive the best education possible. Evenings are reserved for family, a cherished time for sharing meals, stories and laughter. Amid a demanding schedule, these moments are crucial for maintaining strong family bonds and balancing the many aspects of his life. His day is far from over. As the sun sets, the second workout session begins, part of a rigorous training regimen designed for a new and thrilling challenge: trying out for the USA Bobsled team for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Terrance White, a physical education coach and Army Veteran, has a goal to pursue – making it to the Olympics. The training demands strength, speed and endurance, all embraced with the same determination that defined his military career. Each day culminates in rest and recovery, understanding that sleep is vital for peak performance. This disciplined, multifaceted routine paints the picture of someone on a mission—driven by a new dream and the relentless pursuit of greatness.

But why bobsledding?

His journey took an unexpected turn while playing rugby in Korea. Garrett Hines, a former two-time Olympian, suggested he try out for the bobsled team and recommended he watch Cool Runnings. Intrigued by the sport’s thrilling nature, he followed Hines’ advice and passed the combined test. Being part of Team USA is not an easy road. It demands not only talent but the ability to navigate a grueling path that begins with making the National Team and qualifying for the World Cup and other key events. In 2022, a major setback came when a broken leg just before the Beijing Winter Olympics put everything in jeopardy. Having left the Army in 2019 to pursue an Olympic dream, the injury placed him in a difficult position. Due to his work ethic that was shaped by watching his mother, who worked tirelessly to support their family, he prevailed. "She taught me that nothing in life is handed to you—you have to work for it," he says. "Watching her grind every day gave me the motivation to believe that I could do it too." This drive led him to join the military, where he strived not be just another Soldier.

White prepared for an intensive training camp from January 27 to February 6, this year, with a focus on the Push Championships – an event in bobsledding where athletes focus on the “push” portion of the race. In this camp, the drivers—who steer the sleds—will choose their teammates, not the coaches. Building strong relationships with the pilots is essential to securing a spot, as the competition is fierce, with every athlete, even those already on Team USA, fighting for a place.

Bobsledding is not his only Olympic goal. He also aims to compete in weightlifting at the 2028 Summer Olympics. He trains at a local gym that sponsors him, but his journey training began at Ironwork West with Tony McClure, the gym’s manager from 2015 to 2018. While serving in the military, he worked with Tony, who helped him stay injury-free. “Coach Tony is a great mentor,” he says. “He has so much knowledge. He’s old-school, and I love old-school training because it’s more than just copying others. It has depth, and that’s what I’m all about.”

Securing an Olympic berth requires not only rigorous training but also finding sponsors to fund his journey. Despite these challenges, he remains committed to being present for his family, ensuring they are part of his life as he pursues his dream.

“The reason I want to be an Olympian is to showcase my talents to the world,” he said. “And show that God’s not done with my story.”

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK: CONNECTING COMMUNITIES

National Volunteer Week, celebrated annually in the United States during the third week of April, is a time to recognize and appreciate the incredible contributions volunteers make to their communities. Within the Army, this week holds special significance, as it recognizes not only the soldiers who volunteer their lives for their nation but also the countless individuals who support military communities through acts of service. Army volunteers include family members, retirees, and community members who dedicate their skills and time to programs that support Soldiers and their families.

Volunteering has always been a cornerstone of the military culture, with Soldiers and families donating their time and talents to organizations and causes they care about. From assisting with childcare services on installations to organizing morale boosting events, volunteers are often the unsung heroes who help hold communities together. Volunteers also play a vital role in mentoring new military families by instilling a sense of belonging within Army communities. These efforts often go unnoticed but have a profound impact on morale and resilience. National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity to shine a light on their efforts and encourage others to get involved.

One of the hallmark programs that highlights volunteer contributions is the Army Community Service (ACS) program, which provides resources such as deployment readiness, financial counseling, employment preparedness, and volunteer coordination at zero cost for Soldiers and families. Volunteers are the backbone of many ACS initiatives, offering expertise and compassionate support to help Soldiers and their families navigate the challenges of military life.

National Volunteer Week is also an opportunity for leadership to show appreciation. Installations worldwide host recognition ceremonies, where Commanders and community leaders honor volunteers with awards and heartfelt thanks. Stories of exceptional volunteers are also highlighted to showcase their dedication as an inspiration to others. This year, the 1st AD and Fort Bliss Annual Volunteer Ceremony will be taking place on Tuesday, April 22nd from 11pm-1pm at the Centennial Banquet & Conference Center. This event promises to be an exciting and special event as we prepare to receive nominations for all the volunteers who have gone above and beyond to embody the spirit of selfless service.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, let us take a moment to thank the volunteers in our lives and consider how we can contribute to the greater good. By working together, we can create stronger, more connected communities and a more compassionate world.

For more information on how to volunteer or make a nomination, contact Yvette Ramirez, Army Volunteer Corps. Manager at 915-569-7733 or via email at yvette.ramirez2.civ@army.mil.

REACH NEW HEIGHTS: El Paso's Pioneer Military Climbing Wall Welcomes All

Can you think of a more fun and effective workout than rock climbing? Me neither! Here is some great information about the first climbing wall built in El Paso.

In 2012, the 25-foot rock climbing wall was donated to the Roberto Loeza Soldier Activity Center and constructed for $150,000. Our climbing wall remains the first of its kind in the U.S. Army. It is the highlight of our facility and a true symbol of outdoor recreation. Climbing is a great way for you to improve your physical and mental health. The Soldier Activity Center serves as a safe place for beginners to get into climbing and for experienced climbers to hone their skills. Our wall offers a bouldering section, two auto belays, and six top rope panels. We conduct private and group belay classes, and we have held events with JROTC, WBAMC, CYS, Girl/ Boy Scouts, and many more!

We welcome soldiers and civilians alike to stop by the Soldier Activity Center on East Bliss. Our facility provides a 4,000-squarefoot outdoor pool, a locker room with showers, a game room, a high ropes course, and wi-fi accessibility. The climbing wall is available for use 10:00 AM-6:30 PM, Tuesday-Saturday. FREE for active duty, veterans, and first responders. There is a $10 fee for civilians which includes shoes, harness, and chalk! We offer great volunteer opportunities for route setting, belaying, and driving on our trips and events. Additionally, if you're interested in unlimited climbing, we encourage you to join our monthly membership.

Our goal is to inspire you to overcome those personal boundaries you may be faced with and experience something worthwhile. Call (915) 744-1532 for more information.

Army Emergency Relief (AER) is happy to announce the upcoming 2025 campaign. The campaign runs from March 1st through June 14th with the goal of creating greater awareness of the benefits of AER as well as providing Soldiers the opportunity to help their fellow Soldiers.

Over the last several years AER has made significant changes to meet the needs of today’s Army. New categories of assistance include HVAC repair, essential furniture, essential appliances, and dependent dental care, among others. The latest policy changes allow all Soldiers, regardless of rank, direct access to AER assistance; some exceptions do apply.

Never leaving a Soldier in need is in keeping with the Army’s core values. Whether the need is money for a Soldier’s emergency leave, new brakes for the family car or to cover the initial rent deposit on a new apartment, AER is here for you! To maintain this level of assistance today, donations from Soldiers, active and retired, are essential to ensure the legacy of Soldiers Helping Soldiers continues.

Army Emergency Relief is the Army’s non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to Soldiers, active and retired, and their Families. Last year AER provided the Fort Bliss Community $3,893,788 million dollars in assistance to nearly 2,156 Soldiers and their Families. AER provided $428,300 thousand in scholarships to 130 Spouses and Children of Soldiers. Visit www.armyemergencyrelief.org to apply.

To apply for AER assistance Soldiers can either contact their unit Chain of Command, or come into AER located at the main ACS building 2494 Ricker Road, call 915568-4706, or visit our website at armyemergencyrelief.org.

Soldiers wishing to contribute, may do so through their Unit AER Project Officer or online at armyemergencyrelief. org. Civilians wishing to contribute can write a check or go online.

For more information visit bliss.armymwr.com/ programs/army-emergency-relief-aer. Follow AER on Facebook: facebook.com/FortBlissGarrison.
