Golf enthusiasts at the Underwood Golf Complex can now enjoy a state-of-the-art TrackMan Simulator, which transforms the way you play and practice golf. While the simulator has been a valued feature of Underwood for some time, its recent relocation inside the main building has made it even more accessible to all visitors.

The TrackMan Simulator employs advanced TrackMan technology to provide precise measurements of your game, including club head speed, ball speed, swing plane, face angle at impact, total distance, trajectory, and the direction of your golf ball.

The TrackMan Simulator offers a versatile range of options for golfers. You can rent the simulator by the hour to enjoy a round of virtual golf, practice your swing, or determine the exact yardages for your clubs. Additionally, you can book lessons with one of our experienced teaching professionals or undergo detailed club fitting to ensure your equipment matches your game perfectly.

One of the standout features of the TrackMan Simulator is its climate-controlled environment, making it an ideal alternative to outdoor driving ranges. Whether it’s the sweltering heat of summer or the chilly winds of winter, you can play or practice comfortably all year round.

One of the drawbacks of the golf business is that it is very weather dependent. The simulator can be used rain or shine, heat or cold. It also provides data that is not usually available to the everyday golfer.

To maximize your experience, call ahead to schedule an appointment or book a lesson.

While the simulator is available for self-use with an appointment, lessons and club fittings will be conducted by our professional staff to ensure expert guidance.

Underwood Golf Complex has also gained attention thanks to their newest Assistant Golf Professional, Brent Wells. A native of Missouri, he transitioned from Army Veteran to Golf Professional and discovered his passion for golf as a high school freshman.

“I began playing golf in the summer of 1993 in Missouri,” said Wells. “Growing up, my grandparents, uncles,

and father were avid golfers, and our family vacations often revolved around the game. As soon as I was old enough to tag along, I eagerly joined in.”

Despite his initial focus on a sports-related career, he chose to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2000, where he dedicated over 20 years of service. As retirement approached, Brent sought to merge his love for golf with his desire to help others. He explored the science of the golf swing and its connection to body movement, leading him to the Titleist Performance Institute.

“I believe that understanding how a golfer moves is key to being an effective coach,” said Wells. “Instead of making assumptions, I focus on assessing how each golfer moves physically to tailor my coaching approach. Physical limitations can inhibit swing efficiency, durability and ultimately, enjoyment of the game.”

Over four years, he earned multiple certifications through TPI seminars that would assist him in his postmilitary career. In 2022, Brent enrolled in the PGA Associate program and is now a PGA Associate Assistant Professional at Underwood Golf Complex. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Health Sciences with a concentration in Coaching Studies from American Military University.

Every year, more than 70 Army BOSS Programs from around the globe converge to compete and train at the Annual BOSS Training Conference. Army leadership and program managers use the 7-day conference as an opportunity to communicate updates on policies, guidelines, and program initiatives affecting BOSS and single Soldier issues.

During the conference, outstanding BOSS programs, leaders, and volunteers are recognized and awarded for their contributions and achievements in supporting single Soldiers and enhancing their quality of life.

These awards go beyond mere recognition; they validate the efforts and commitment of leaders and programs that contribute to Soldiers’ quality of life, morale, and overall readiness. Fort Bliss BOSS attended the conference and were victorious in numerous categories.

Among the IMCOM Awards, BOSS received the Best President of the Year (Army-Wide) award, which was given to CPL Reschelle Deschenes, she was also awarded the Presidential Volunteerism Award in GOLD. Winning the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) Gold level is a prestigious recognition in the United States for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to volunteer service over the course of a 12-month period.

In the IMCOM Directorate-Readiness (ID-R) Awards, Fort Bliss was recognized for having the Best Program, with CPL Reschelle Deschenes also being honored as the Best President, and CSM David Sweeney receiving the Best CSM award — leading an extra large post. NORWEGIAN FOOT MARCH

A STORIED TRADITION

The Norwegian Foot March, established over 70 years ago, is more than just a sporting event. Rooted in Norway’s military history and designed as a rigorous test of physical fitness, the march has evolved into a popular event that attracts participants from all walks of life. Originally intended to prepare Soldiers for the demands of war, the march has transformed into a civilian event that honors the perseverance and resilience of its early pioneers.

Participants are tasked with walking distances of 40 to 50 kilometers, approximately 25 to 31 miles, often through rugged terrain and varying weather conditions. The event typically includes a set weight for the participants’ backpacks, adding an extra layer of

difficulty and realism to the challenge.

THE EXPERIENCE

Walking alongside fellow enthusiasts, participants in the Norwegian Foot March quickly find themselves immersed in a spirit of camaraderie and mutual support. The event fosters a sense of unity as people from diverse backgrounds come together with a shared goal. Stories of perseverance, encouragement, and the occasional shared snack along the way weave a tapestry of collective achievement.

TRAINING AND PREPARATION

To successfully complete the Norwegian Foot March, preparation is key. Participants typically undergo rigorous training that includes long-distance walking, strength building, and endurance exercises. Many also

engage in “fartlek” training, a form of interval training that enhances both speed and stamina. Proper gear for civilians is crucial; sturdy hiking boots, weatherappropriate clothing, and a well-fitted backpack are essential for navigating the challenging terrain.

A TEST OF SPIRIT

The true essence of the Norwegian Foot March lies in its ability to test the spirit as much as the body. It is a test of resilience, determination, and the ability to push through physical and mental barriers. For many, crossing the finish line is not just a personal victory but a testament to the collective strength and support found within the marching community.

LOOKING FORWARD

As the event continues to grow in popularity, it maintains its commitment to preserving the traditions

that have made it a cherished part of Norwegian culture. With each passing year, the Norwegian Foot March not only challenges participants to go further but also brings together people from around the world to experience the beauty and strength of Norway. Whether you are a seasoned marcher or a newcomer looking to embrace the challenge, the Norwegian Foot March offers an experience that is both physically demanding and profoundly rewarding.

JOIN THE JOURNEY

RAISE AWARENESS

Since 1987, October has been the Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During this month, military communities across the globe join together to raise awareness about domestic violence, recognize our brave survivors and remember those we have lost to this tragedy. Fort Bliss is proud to bring this awareness and education to the installation, it takes a village to stand up against Domestic Violence. Together, we can do more.

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, nearly 12 million men and women experience intimate partner violence each year, averaging about 24 people per minute. This can be physical violence, psychological and emotional abuse or even financial abuse. Children are also often caught in the crossfire of domestic violence, as a witness or victim. Sadly, because this behavior can be cyclical, around 40% of child abuse victims later experience domestic violence in their life. Despite these staggering numbers, we firmly believe that everyone deserves to be safe. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the purple ribbon is used to symbolize strength and courage for those who wear it, demonstrating their willingness to speak up against domestic violence. It is also a solemn reminder of those who can no longer stand up for themselves. During October, many decorate with the color purple, wear it proudly on their clothes and find other creative ways to outwardly share their commitment to ending domestic violence.

The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) invites Fort Bliss to take part in Domestic Violence Awareness Month! FAP is partnering with local community agencies to host a number of wonderful events to educate, strengthen and unite against domestic violence. The hope is that together, people can build strong, safe and healthy relationships. Be able to educate ourselves and the community about resources and help available to those experiencing domestic violence and that by honoring those we have lost, can promote a positive change

that will break the cycle of intimate partner violence. Kicking off the month with an Open House, Oct. 1, hosted by FAP for the military community at 2494 Ricker Road. Come meet Victim Advocates, Family Advocacy Specialists and many other community partners who are united and diligent in the mission against domestic violence. There will also be a special training about Trauma Informed Care, given by Family Advocacy Program Manager at Stayton Theater during the open house.

On Oct. 3 we are hosting Mr. Obbie West from Words of West LLC at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Obbie West is known internationally as a spoken word artist against abuse and mental health advocate. He will discuss a variety of compelling topics, such as male victimization and addressing reasons why survivors accept blame. He will offer tools to help survivors reject selfblame and trauma bonding.

The Family Advocacy Program has experienced, compassionate victim advocates and specialists who can assist, offer services and provide resources to Soldiers and their Families. The military life can present many unique challenges, but FAP team is prepared to walk alongside you and face them head-on. There are many enriching classes provided that promote prevention and intervention, communication, relationship skills and parenting skills. FAP also has a team dedicated to expecting parents or parents with children 0-3 years old who have the skills, knowledge and tools to help with an array of issues; whether they are day-to-day situations or situations totally unique to the military.

Finally, if you are in need of a victim advocate, there is a 24/7 service for Families. Advocates can walk you through restricted and unrestricted reporting, safety planning, accompany you to court, provide emergency assistance, referrals, continued, ongoing support and much more. For more information, call 915-568-9129. For after hours and weekend advocate support, call the Family Advocacy Domestic Abuse Victim hotline at 915-269-2013. Someone will be available to assist you anytime.
