History is not the school subject that most will remember too fondly.

Often the focus was remembering facts, dates and obscure details that were told or had to read about. But the field of history is much more than reading. There are historians that study the tools, food, entertainment, and struggles of daily life in different time periods through recreating these things and experiences to understand them better.

This is the model that has been adopted for the Old Fort Bliss Replica, Hands on History Series. Each month a different aspect of life in the Borderlands region during the 1850s will be explored through touch and play rather than a lecture.

Patrons will be working with tools from the various workshops at the museum to learn how things were made and why they were important to the daily lives of the people.

Participants will be making birdhouses, pottery, playing games, weaving, preparing food and various other activities to make learning about history fun for children.

Class sizes are limited to the first 20 registered patrons to ensure that each child gets ample hands-on time with every activity. Classes will be about two hours long to include a craft project related to the topic that children will

complete and take home. The cost for each class varies based on supplies needed. A parent or guardian is required to stay with the child and is encouraged to learn BY TASHA GROSS alongside them. FAMILY & MWR OLD FORT BLISS REPLICA Parents are not charged for their participation unless they would like to complete the craft project also. You are never too old to have fun and learn something new! In addition, your participation will help fund the expansion of the educational displays that can be toured Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any of the Hands on History classes can be booked weekdays as a private event for home school groups or private parties. The Old Fort Bliss Replica is also available for private tours of 10 or more participants and field trips upon request. The Hands on History Series is a school age-oriented program. Over the past two pandemic years, children have missed out on enrichment activities through the lack of field trips and often face to face learning. It’s time to get back out there and learn. So, join the fun at the Old Fort Bliss Replica for one or all of our Hands on History classes.
