Skip The Fad Diet And Follow These Five Steps Instead - BlitzBarz

There are so many fad diets out there, it's hard to know which one to follow. Let's have a look at some of the best ones. Wait? Did you think that I, a registered dietitian, would recommend you follow a fad diet? No! BUT, there are some healthy commonalities to many of the fad diets you hear about.

Sometimes, fad diets do work, not necessarily because of the "diet" itself, but the underlying changes that are made to one's current lifestyle.

While many of the claims touting the benefits of a certain diet are unsubstantiated, here are some of the common tactics that DO work.

Increasing physical activity Restricting calorie intake Reducing carbohydrates Increasing protein intake Eating more fruits and vegetables

For the majority population, at the end of the day, the most important thing is to balance calories in versus calories out. That means you increase your physical activity level, eat less, or better yet, a combination of both, to achieve a healthy weight.

I bet if you googled low carb and/or high protein diets you would get one gazillion results. Reducing the overall amount of carbohydrates in the diet while replacing them with quality fats and protein can result in weight loss. The body's main source of fuel is carbohydrates, such as breads, pasta, rice, and any other foods that contain sugars. When you reduce these types of fuel, your body must utilize something else to generate energy. Body fat stores are tapped and as long as we consume adequate protein, lean body mass can be maintained.

I always say, "Eat your fruits and vegetables!" I can't stress this enough, especially when looking to lose weight. Vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals, that is important for everyone, additionally, they are full of fiber and low in calories. Fiber fills us up, and has many other health and physiological benefits as well. If we feel full, we eat less, yet another way to achieving a healthy weight! Instead of a second serving of calorie dense rice or pasta, fill your plate with some nutritious spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles.

Sensible is the way to go. Practice moderation. If weight loss is your goal, remember, things take time. Make healthy choices and incorporate physical activity into your lifestyle regularly. There are many ways to be healthy without making drastic changes to your life or eliminating key food groups. Most people want a quick fix, but if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Making small, lasting changes over times adds up and yields the most benefit long term.
