London Youth Games 2021 - more good results for Bexley
9
Despite the London Youth Games being very different this year, Bexley entered 10 teams. Six of them finished on the podium, nine teams finished in the top 5 and all the teams finished in the top 10.
Bexley also won a ‘Respect the Games Award’ for its sportsmanship following a vote by the teams taking part. Due to coronavirus safety measures, the Games had started and finished later and only involved outdoor sports. Bexley’s first event was tennis in June, and the final events took place at the East Hub weekend on 11th and 12th September. Phil Lewis, Borough Team Organiser, commented: “We’d like to thank everyone who has helped make this season such a success for Bexley and the London Youth Games for their efforts in running a great season of events.” In total 63 amazing competitors represented the borough, supported by 16 very hardworking team managers, coaches and volunteers. www.bexley.gov.uk www.londonyouthgames.org

Theatre goes from strength to strength in Eltham
For those Bexley Life readers who haven’t paid the Bob Hope Theatre Eltham a visit, or possibly may not have even heard of us, we are located just off Eltham High Street, on Wythfield Road. by John Goodwin
The Theatre has been in existence as Eltham Little Theatre since November 1943 to promote drama, music and allied arts in Eltham and its immediate vicinity, finding a home in Eltham Parish Hall (the current Theatre) in 1946. The Theatre’s management endeavoured to purchase the building. However, in 1957 it became clear that the asking price was beyond reach despite constant fund-raising efforts. By 1979 funds were low. The Theatre membership was almost resigned to closure. The lease was not renewed, the premises were up for sale and then Bob Hope stepped in!! Over the decades, with the hard work of its members, and financial assistance from Bob Hope and The Bob and Dolores Hope Foundation, among others, the Theatre has gone from strength to strength, making a full upgrade to the front of the building and back-stage facilities in 2018. Following this, during the last year, our auditorium was updated, with new seating and carpeting, improving our audience experience. The Theatre presents a number of its own productions through the year, hosts a huge number of lettings from other local theatre and musical associations, along with being a well equipped venue for many dance schools in the area. Membership to the Bob Hope Theatre is open to anyone. Full Membership is open to those 18 years and over - and there is no upper limit!! You can get involved in as little or as much as you wish to; acting, directing, stage management, scenery and prop creation, wardrobe, lighting, sound, front of house management - the list is endless. We offer a welcoming and social environment and one where you can explore those hidden talents! To find out more please contact The Membership Secretary via email [membership@bobhopetheatre.org.uk] or leave your name and contact number with our box office and we will call you. For those younger, our New Stagers youth drama group is for 11 - 16 year olds. Post-Covid the Theatre is now fully up and running. Following this month’s BHT production ‘The Revlon Girl‚‘ the Theatre plays host to Bromley Players Musical Productions and their up-lifting not-to-be-missed concert ‘Out Of The Darkness’. This will be followed by ‘East Meets West’ an evening of classics from the BRY Trio, including music by Bartok, Khachaturian and Britten. The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company then return with the John Godber comedy play ‘Teechers’, based on Godber’s frustration with the education system and how so many students were - and still are - failing. It was written in the 1980’s over his anger about the proposed National Curriculum introduced by the Thatcher government in 1988. It is based in truth: his experiences as a drama teacher. The Roan Theatre Company present their production of Tom Stoppard’s beautifully written ‘Arcadia’ in early December, followed by the welcome return of Shane Hampsheir’s ‘Christmas Swing-A-Long’. Throughout January the Bob Hope Theatre will find itself transformed into Olde-Worlde London Town and the Coast of Morocco with this year’s pantomime spectacular ‚‘Dick Whittington’. The show has been cast, rehearsals are well under way, with a script by Kirsty Davide and Wayne Morgan-Williams, this production promises to be an uplifting boost for everyone after the year we have experienced. Full details on all these shows and others can be found on the BHT website www.bobhopetheatre.co.uk.

What is Childcare Disparity and what do Bexley employers need to know about it? N E W S
12
I N
B R I E F
A recent Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) case has put a spotlight on childcare disparity. A community nurse was dismissed by her NHS Trust for refusing to change her two-day-a-week working pattern to occasionally include weekends. Her refusal was due to her caring responsibilities for her three children. An Employment Tribunal originally upheld the dismissal, but the EAT sided with the nurse. Rachel Widden, HR Manager, from The HR Dept, South East London & North Kent picks out the key points for local businesses. Rachel explains: “Childcare disparity is the term which describes the issue of women being more likely to be child carers than men. Because this can make it more difficult for women to work flexibly, it can lead to indirect sex discrimination if they are disadvantaged by a flexible working provision, criterion or practice (PCP). “For about 20 years this has been established in case law. This means that courts should assume (without being presented with evidence) that inflexible working patterns do disadvantage women. In legal terms it is known as taking judicial notice. The original tribunal did not do this, but the EAT found that it should have done so.” Rachel adds: “For completeness, the EAT also found that by only comparing the nurse’s situation to her immediate team (where all other male and female colleagues did comply with the flexible working) the Employment Tribunal had not considered a wide enough pool for comparison. The EAT asked that all community nurses subject to the new working pattern across the NHS Trust be included in the comparison. “So what does this mean for local businesses? “First, that although in the last 20 years there has been a movement towards more equitable childcare between the sexes, this is by no means complete. Childcare disparity still exists and judicial notice should still be taken in the courts. Therefore Bexley businesses should be careful not to disadvantage working mothers with flexible working demands. “Second, detail from the case also suggests the threshold for an employee in proving a disadvantage is low. The NHS Trust unsuccessfully argued they had given good notice and that the nurse’s husband could help with childcare. The EAT’s ruling means that it does not have to be impossible to comply with a working requirement for a disadvantage to be established; simply that it has to impose difficulty on the employee. “The pandemic has shaken up working patterns. Flexible working as a whole has become more prevalent and is likely to remain so. Be mindful that flexible working, or a specific pattern of flexible working, may not always be welcomed by employees and if forced through does carry legal risk. If in doubt, seek professional advice.” For enquiries on this topic, please contact Rachel Widden from The HR Dept, at rachel.widden@thehrdept.co.uk or on 0345 634 9154.

ROYAL RETURN FOR PANTOMIME by James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre.
As we emerge from the pandemic at Greenwich Theatre, we’ve had one very important decision to make – the title of this year’s pantomime. We could have gone with one of the easily recognised major titles like so many other theatres. The likes of Cinderella, Aladdin or Jack and the Beanstalk are dominating the list of shows programmed across the country this Christmas, and I completely understand the need for venues to focus on reliable titles. This season is by far the most lucrative for most theatres, often taking the place of funding that has been progressively reduced over the years, and after almost 18 months of closures, postponements and cancellations, we all need to feel confident that we have a strong pantomime season ahead of us.
However, whilst stories like those all make for brilliant pantomimes (and we’ll certainly be revisiting them in the future), in consultation with our writer/dame Andrew Pollard and the creative team, we wanted to come back with something that’s both old and new, a show that used to be a regular feature in the pantomime canon but which has fallen out of favour in more recent years. Andrew is a real expert on the history of pantomime, so for him the idea of bringing back one of the lost titles is certainly an exciting prospect, while at Greenwich we always love to put our own twist on the classic tales. Therefore this year at Greenwich Theatre we will be presenting a brand new take on The Queen of Hearts. A major pantomime title in the past, the story from the nursery rhyme about the knave who stole the tarts used to be presented regularly over the festive season, but this year there is every chance that this will be the only production of the title in the country.

Reuniting dame Andrew Pollard (who also writes and directs) with designer Cleo Pettitt and musical director Steve Markwick, this is set to feature all of the classic elements of a Greenwich pantomime - including the return of arch villain Anthony Spargo (last seen at Greenwich Theatre as the dastardly Miss Slighcarp in The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase) who appears as The King Of Clubs. In the show, the Knave of Hearts is a bit of a joker who’s in love with the Princess of Diamonds. The only problem is, she’s already got a boyfriend – the Prince of Spades. Maybe the Queen’s secret jam recipe will win her over? But then there’s the King of Clubs who’s also desperate to get his hands on the secret recipe… With a new set-up this year, placing our acclaimed live band on stage and in the heart of the action, this is set to be a must-see show and a triumphant return after theatres were forced to miss last year’s festive season entirely. Tickets are already selling fast, with a relaxed performance added this year too. Visit www.greenwichtheatre.org.uk or call 020 8858 7755 for more details.
