A busy Maritime Summer? With a possible brighter future and more movement just around the corner, just what can we expect?
Editor
Welcome to the June 2021 issue of Marine & Maritime Gazette the monthly magazine aimed at Worldwide coverage of the commercial marine, shipping and waterbased renewables markets. With many of us now being able to move around and forward to a certain degree, the industry is still striving to have a planned evolution for life after the Pandemic This is more difficult for some areas than others, and many of us would have been looking forward to a visit to Seawork in Southampton, however there is still room for a little optimism. Inside this issue, we are, as usual, covering a vast amount of topics, from ‘Tugs, Workboats & OSVs’ on page 20, Commercial Ma to the ‘ins and outs’ of ‘Power, Propulsion rine & Renewabl es Worldwide & Transmission’ from page 28. There is also a quick look at ‘Paints, Coatings & Treatments’ on page 34 and from page 38 we also have a ‘peek’ at ‘Pollution Clean-up & Control’. Anyway, happy reading and if you have any news, reviews, product launches or absolutely anything else of interest across the whole marine market, please email it to me at info@bljournals.plus.com for future INSIDE: consideration in our forthcoming issues.

Damen launches RoPax 6716 for the Port Authority of Timor-Leste Recently Damen Yichang Shipyard launched a RoPax 6716 into the water. The vessel will be operated by the Port Authority of Timor-Leste (APORTIL). It will operate between Timor-Leste’s capital Dili, the Oecusse enclave and the island of Ataúro, carrying up to 308 passengers, vehicles and cargo. The ferry will stimulate increased access to trade, education and employment. The construction of the vessel took place during some of the most challenging months of the COVID-19 pandemic and it was only by implementing a robust set of safety measure at the yard that Damen was able to keep things on schedule. Due to the pandemic, the launching event was a virtual celebration. It was well attended by delegates from Damen, APORTIL, class and representatives of the government of TimorLeste in China. The vessel launch button was pressed by Mr Abrao dos Santos, Ambassador of Timor-Leste to China, Mr. Deng Zhiping, MD of Damen Yichang Shipyard and Mr. Shengtong Wang, Damen sales manager Asia pacific. Ms. Maria Albert Gonclave, third secretary of Timor-Leste in China released the bottle of champagne with which the vessel was named Berlin-Ramelau. The name, featuring the capital of Germany and the highest mountain in Timor-Leste, is a reference to the co-funding of the vessel by the governments of both countries. Speaking at the launching ceremony, president of the board at APORTIL Mr. Eng. Flavio Cardoso Neves said, “Even facing numerous obstacles, this project execution has managed to proceed, with nearly no deviation, towards its final destination, in Dili. The pandemic crisis has limited parties from travelling and made difficult the circulation of materials around the world. But the whole team commitment, adaption and perseverance has led us to this day. Such is the strong personality of the maritime industry and its people. The construction of the Berlin-Ramelau has been a truly multinational project, calling upon the cooperation of parties in Germany, Timor-Leste, China and the Netherlands. We are very proud to have played our part in this project.” Now that the Berlin-Ramelau is in the water, the yard will continue with outfitting. MSC builds transport yard at Port of Liverpool Mediterranean Shipping Company UK (MSC) will be investing in a new transport yard at the Port of Liverpool to further support the port’s ongoing expansion in operations.
IMH gets go ahead on major works for Boston Wet Dock Hydraulic engineering specialist Industrial and Marine Hydraulics (IMH) has been commissioned to provide the hydraulics for a pair of new dock gates at the Port of Boston dock entrance. The company, based in Middlesbrough, UK delivers major hydraulic engineering projects across the world and successfully won this project following its work on the Boston Barrier supporting BMMJV (a joint operating venture of BAM Nuttall and Mott MacDonald). The pair of dock gates at the wet dock is the final stage of works that has been carried out to provide 14,000 homes and 800 businesses with protection from tidal surge flooding from the North Sea. IMH has already supplied a main hydraulic power unit and two emergency hydraulic power units to power the Boston tidal flood barrier which weighs around 730 tonnes when in operation. This phase of the project will see IMH deliver a single main hydraulic power unit (MHPU) which will power both the North and South wet dock entrance gates, as well as two emergency hydraulic power units (EHPU) which are diesel driven. Interconnecting pipework and control cables will be routed under the wet dock entrance structures with each wet dock entrance gate actuated by a single hydraulic cylinder. The new wet dock entrance gates will be operated by the hydraulic control system. James Griffiths, Managing Director at IMH commented: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to once again work alongside BMMJV following our successful work together on the Boston tidal flood barrier. “The team at IMH has successfully completed manufacture of the pipe spools and are currently finalising the manufacture of the hydraulic power units ready for the factory acceptance test within the next few weeks.” Guy Russell, MEICA Project Manager at BAM Nuttall added: “We’re delighted with the input and support provided by IMH through the Boston Tidal Barrier project. “The pro-active relationship between BMMJV and IMH has meant that challenges were identified quickly and solutions implemented effectively to ensure the project continued on time and to budget.” IMH has extensive experience of providing hydraulic engineering expertise and solutions to sectors including oil and gas, marine, subsea, energy (including renewables), nuclear, infrastructure, mining, manufacturing and automotive. By closely engaging with IMH, companies can tap into a deep source of hydraulic engineering talent from consultation and initial specification through to design and delivery, providing customers with peace of mind through the provision of expert advice and support. www.imh-uk.com

The new facility will be fully operational this year, with the MSC-owned transport fleet increasing by up to 40 trucks based at the new site. The new expansion follows significant line haulage growth since May last year, and builds on the port’s growing number of acquisitions of cargo handing equipment. Jonathan Burke, Operations Director at MSC UK, commented “MSC’s long established line haulage network offers great value to our customers by seamlessly connecting their cargo across road, rail and sea; delivering a more efficient, cost effective and green transport solution. “In addition to our existing fleet based in
Felixstowe, this expansion, alongside the MSC’s daily rail services from Liverpool to the Midlands, enables us to offer full local and national coverage through the Port or Liverpool for both imports and exports.” Burke continued that Peel Ports’s Liverpool location is a ‘natural fit’ to help MSC further supply chain options in the North West, taking advantage of MSC direct ocean services into Liverpool and dedicated transhipment services. The new agreement is part of a longer-term investment programme from MSC improving its existing fleet through increasing automation and vehicle tracking. Burk added, “This exciting expansion of our transport services further underpins our ambition to grow organically whilst continuing to evolve and enhance our offering for customers. “With this addition to our operation we are giving significant strength both to our Liverpool offering as a gateway port, and our intermodal operation at a difficult time for the market.” www.peelports.com

Fugro site characterisation contracts renewed for Atlantic Shores
Fugro has received a contract renewal from Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind (Atlantic Shores) for the provision of real-time wind and metocean measurements off the coast of New Jersey in the US over the next 2 years.
The award is the latest in a set of three contract renewals between Fugro and Atlantic Shores based on a successful 2020 work season. Along with metocean services, Fugro’s geophysical and geotechnical contracts have also previously been renewed, all three to support the safe design, permitting and construction of future wind farm facilities within the 740 km2 lease area. For the metocean contract, Fugro is utilising two Seawatch Wind Lidar Buoys. These systems provide cost-effective and reliable collection of wind, wave, current and meteorological data to optimise wind turbine design, installation, and operations and maintenance. The geophysical and geotechnical contracts started earlier this spring and are focused on continued characterisation of the lease area, export cable routes and interarray cable modules. The fieldwork will run until mid-July and is being performed from five vessels, including two third-party vessels local to New Jersey, equipped with advanced data acquisition and analysis capabilities for near-real-time data processing and geoconsulting. With the potential to deliver more than 3 GW of wind power from late 2027, Atlantic Shores will play an important role in New Jersey’s goal to reach 50 % renewable power by 2030. Edward Saade, President of Fugro in the US, commented: “Fugro is committed to ensuring a successful energy transition at the local, regional and global levels, so we are thrilled to continue our work with Atlantic Shores this year, building on past successes and applying innovative technologies that will help move this critical project forward.” www.fugro.com

Damen launches Crane Barge in Yichang Recently Damen Yichang Shipyard launched a 75 x 32 metre Crane Barge into the water. The event was seasonally timed to ensure the correct water depth needed to perform the successful launch of the barge. Damen is building the Crane Barge 7532 for a Panamanian client. Now that the barge is in the water, the yard will make the final preparations for her forthcoming journey to Huisman’s Chinese yard in Fujian Province. Here, Huisman is currently preparing a state-of-the-art crane for the vessel. The crane will first be tested on land before being lifted onto the barge for installation and final testing of the crane together with the Crane Barge systems. With this, the barge will have a lifting capability of 625 tons at 25 metres. After completion in China the Crane Barge will be transported to Panama on a semi-submersible vessel, where she will be expected to arrive at the end of this year. The project experienced some challenges when production at the Yichang was affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Damen sales manager Olivier van Papenrecht says everyone worked very hard to keep things on track. “I’m very proud to see the barge successfully launched. That this has happened now, so close to the original schedule, despite the impact the pandemic had on production, is a real achievement. This represents the commitment shown to the project by the client, by the production team in Yichang and by the project team in the Netherlands.” www.damen.com

Queen’s Award for
International Trade
for The Wight
Shipyard Company
The Wight Shipyard Company, the UK’s leading specialist manufacturer of aluminium marine craft, based in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for International Trade in recognition of its work to increase British exports.

A home-grown British marine manufacturing success story, the Wight Shipyard Company builds high-speed passenger ferries, tourist vessels and commercial workboats for the windfarm support vessel market, both domestically and internationally. The company was formed by leading entrepreneur Sir Charles Dunstone and business partner Peter Morton in 2016 with a bold vision to restore the UK’s shipbuilding business. Over the past three years, nearly 60% of the company’s turnover was for export market. Furthermore, the employment opportunities created on the Isle of Wight have made the Wight Shipyard Company a thriving hub of innovation in shipbuilding and high-tech manufacturing with a highly skilled local workforce. Speaking at about The Queen’s Award for International Trade, Peter Morton, Chief Executive of the Wight Shipyard Company stated: "We are delighted to receive this recognition. The overarching ambition was always to see a revival in British shipbuilding to compete on an international stage. To do so we understood and drove the need for efficiencies whilst nurturing a completely new generation of shipbuilders in order to produce world beating products for both the domestic and international markets.” The domestic fast ferry market is significant in the UK. However, the Wight Shipyard Company has capacity to produce more boats than required so exporting and competing internationally has been vital to its development and success. The company’s sales efforts naturally led it overseas and membership of Interferry, the shipping association representing the ferry industry globally, opened up the markets of Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, West Africa and South America. The Wight Shipyard Company also works closely with the ferry broking industry giving it a competitive advantage when tendering for projects. To date the company’s three largest export orders have come from Austria, Mexico and Malta. An Austrian ferry, operating on the Danube, for Twin City Liners was delivered in 2018. In 2019, two high speed ferries were completed ahead of schedule and were the first vessels exported from the UK to Mexico since 1980 for Ultramar, Cancun. This was followed by the build of four high-speed ferries for the Maltese operator, Captain Morgan Cruises in 2020. Peter Morton, CEO, further commented: “Keeping a steady stream of both international and domestic orders has enabled us to grow and the Queen’s Award for International Trade is a significant recognition that will open doors around the world. It is testament and endorsement to everyone who works at the Wight Shipyard Company and for Sir Charles who has been a committed supporter of British shipbuilding and enterprise.” The Wight Shipyard is one of 205 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2021. Now in its 55th year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the UK. www.wightshipyard.com

New smart service plugs launched from Hydroscand Hydroscand is launching specially designed service plugs in carefully selected materials, that enable both reuse and recycling. Service plugs are important tools for minimising the risk of environmentally harmful leakage. For example, during oil changes, service, assembly and hose changes. Leakage can also lead to high remediation costs. To help customers reduce the environmental impact, the service plugs are made of oil-resistant TPV, a thermoplastic elastomer. Unlike plugs that are made of rubber, Hydroscand's plugs can be recycled instead of burned. The material also has properties that allow the plug to sit firmly in place and can be reused for a longer period of time. The plug can withstand a temperature range of -40°C to +130°C. Hydroscand's new plug is available in many different sizes and can be used for a variety of jobs: wherever you need to temporarily plug something that is not pressurised. They work excellently in, for example, hose breakage, where you want to protect the environment, but also need to ensure that as little as possible is lost from the system. They also work to plug a drain so as to avoid unpleasant odors. The new service plugs are therefore suitable for those who working in areas such as hydraulics, plumbing, workshop service, shipping and more. Renovation of Lisbon waterfront Lisbon Tourism Association (ATL) begins renovation of waterfront next to the iconic Praça do Comércio in Lisbon. Lindley is proud to have been selected for this project, the supply of the new nautical infrastructure at Praça do Comércio, one of the most emblematic locations on the Lisbon waterfront. Previously the location of the Kings palace, the area was rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake under the reconstruction plan laid out by the Marquês de Pombal who designed one of Lisbon’s most emblematic landmarks, Terreiro do Paço also named Praça do Comércio. ATL, a Portuguese public entity, has not allowed the COVID pandemic to alter its plans to improve the infrastructure of the Lisbon waterfront. The main objective of the 2021 investment project was to rehabilitate the waterfront at city centre, focused on the city's relationship with the river, creating safe and easy access piers for tour boats whilst maintaining the aesthetics and charm of Lisbon’s historic riverside. The first project located in front of Praça do Comércio is a 30m long landing pier for tourist boats, built using 6m wide concrete pontoon with timber deck accessed by a 20m long steel gangway moored on reinforced 20m radius arms. The second project, few hundred meters upriver is at Doca da Marinha, a former navy basin now converted into a small harbour for tourist boats including a berthing area. This project involved the supply of concrete floating wave attenuators to ensure proper protection of the basin and the supply of steel pontoons moored on piles. The project will allow visitors to enjoy trips on the river, since the Doca da Marinha will receive the typical boats of the Tejo River. Both projects were equipped with light, electricity, and water pedestals as well as the required safety equipment. www.lindley.pt

Dales Marine Services enters new
build arena with an order for a new vessel for Aquaculture
Dales Marine Services Ltd, a leading UK Ship Repair company with over 30-years vessel experience and expertise, is pleased to announce a new contract to fabricate a new multi-cat vessel platform to support the Aquaculture sector.
Dales Marine Services has over 30 years in vessel engineering and dry dock services with multiple vessels visiting its dry docks in Aberdeen, Leith, Greenock and Troon with a supporting dry dock at Grangemouth. The company has been working closely with the aquaculture sector delivering dry dock services at its west coast facilities in both Greenock and Troon and providing offshore technicians and engineers to carry out urgent vessel maintenance and repair services in-situ. Marine Design International Ltd is pleased to work with Dales Marine Services on the new build, Multifarm 18, after their success in a highly competitive international tendering process. Simon Cormack, Director, Marine Design International Ltd said on the award of this contract, “Dales Marine Services demonstrated an in-depth knowledge in vessel engineering and an ability to deliver at a competitive price. The new design has been developed with Mowi Ireland as a platform incorporating the hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical supplies required for operations on the farms. This latest model also has propulsion efficiency improvements for transits between sites.” “Dales is thrilled to have secured this contract which I know will become a key achievement in the company’s timeline. We have years of vessel engineering, repurposing vessels and knowing that we can transfer these skills into a multi-cat vessel build. Everyone at Dales is proud and pleased with this new vessel build,” said Michael Milne, Chief Executive Officer, Dales Marine Services. “We know from our records that the Dales dry dock in Aberdeen last saw a vessel built in it during the late 1980s when the dry dock was owned by Halls & Russell. It is an exciting chapter for the dry dock to be bringing back shipbuilding to Aberdeen, all be it a smaller vessel but hopefully the start of bigger things to come.” Michael Milne continued. www.dalesmarineservices.co.uk

Damen Marine Components supplies FLEX Tunnels, three nozzles and three manoeuvring systems with seven rudders for new tanker for Stolt and BASF
Damen Marine Components (DMC) is making a special contribution to the innovative inland waterway tanker that is being built for BASF and Stolt Tankers. This shallow water tanker will be equipped with three manoeuvring systems and a total of seven rudders, which is unique in the industry. The tanker has a lightweight shallow water design, allowing the vessel to remain operational, even at very shallow water levels. The hull form is equipped with three manoeuvring systems. The outer systems consist of a Van der Velden® Three-rudder system with a Van der Velden® FLEX Tunnel in front, both on the left and right. These flexible tunnels are integrated into the hull and can be deployed and retracted at any time. When deployed, they optimise the water flow to the propellers. If the water depth is sufficient, the tunnels are superfluous and they will be retracted. The centre manoeuvring system has a single rudder to improve course stability. DMC also supplies custom-made control and steering systems. The shallow water ship will be fitted with a total of seven rudders, which is unique. Leo van Zon, Area Sales Manager of DMC: “The design has shown that the outer drive trains have to do their job with a small propeller diameter at shallow draught. DMC has chosen a solution for this in which the original Van der Velden® Three-rudder system compensates for the lack of rudder surface at this small propeller diameter that is offered with a normal propeller size drive and rudder system. The seven rudders in combination with the FLEX Tunnels make it a unique ship.” The ship design was conceived and developed on behalf of BASF by DST Duisburg, the inland shipping research institute that also developed the FLEX Tunnel System with DMC. Shipping company Stolt Tankers, one of the largest chemical carriers in the world, will be the owner of the vessel and operate it exclusively for BASF. Stolt has asked project developer Mercurius Shipping Group to build the ship. The tanker is planned to be commissioned by the end of 2022. The new tanker has a high carrying capacity and with a length of 135 meters and a width of 17.5 metres, it will be considerably larger than most other tankers on the River Rhine. The ship will be fitted with ten stainless steel cargo tanks for the transport of chemicals and be powered by three electric motors. The development of this innovative design was prompted by the shallow draught on the Rhine at the end of 2018, which compromised the supply of raw materials to BASF in Ludwigshafen. “The predictions are that water levels will become increasingly erratic,” says Maickel Uijtewaal, general manager of inland shipping at Stolt Tankers. “All this is in response to expected shallow water levels in the future. It’s fantastic to be able to realise such a unique project together.” www.damen.com

Atlantique Maritime Services buys a
Damen FCS 2610 to serve the growing
French offshore wind market
Damen is delighted to have sold one of its iconic Fast Crew Suppliers to French workboat operator Atlantique Maritime Services (AMS). The Damen FCS 2610, named JLD Jayce, will be the first Damen Crew Transfer Vessel fully dedicated to the French offshore wind industry.
AMS, which is part of Groupe LHD, already owns two Damen Shoalbusters, a 1907 and a 2308. Rodolphe Bodineau, AMS Deputy Director, explains that the company’s positive experience with the Damen Shoalbusters led to it considering the FCS 2610 for the developing renewables sector. “This is the first time we have bought a Crew Transfer Vessel. We are very satisfied with the Shoalbusters and know that Damen has a very good reputation in the offshore wind market as well. We have also formed a good bond with Damen over the last few years and are even considering buying more Damen vessels.” AMS is located very close to the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm, which is under development, and the Guérande wind farm. The company is already supporting a French floating wind demonstration project. JLD Jayce is the fourth pre-owned Damen FCS 2610 to be sold through Damen’s ship brokerage division Damen Trading & Chartering, (part of Damen Marine Services), since the beginning of last year. The Damen division handled the initial trade-in from the former owners, the refit and final sale to AMS. Before delivery, JLD Jayce underwent a partial refit and technical check-up at Damen Shipyards Den Helder. “Our new vessel arrived in Saint-Nazaire recently and several potential customers have already visited so we are confident that JLD Jayce will soon be busy in the offshore wind sector in France, initially in the construction phases of the wind farms and then eventually the O&M phase. “We are very optimistic that there are plenty of opportunities in France, with eight projects underway, and that we can find our place within the French wind farm sector and in Europe in the longer term,” Mr Bodineau stresses. Established 35 years ago, AMS has a fleet of 8 vessels performing maritime operations and services at sea and in ports. Currently, there are two Damen FCS 2610 operating under the French flag by Jifmar. Nearly 50 of these pioneering vessels have been delivered since 2011 and most of them are active in the European offshore wind sector. Damen launched a larger model, the FCS 2710, in April 2018. www.damen.com

Foss Maritime operate
autonomous harbour tug
Foss Maritime’s latest addition is the first U.S. flag harbour tug to integrate
autonomous systems in real-world commercial operations. Delivered last month, the newly built 90 ton bollard pull vessel is christened Rachael Allen and is the fourth in a series of ASD-90 Z-drive tractor tugs being built at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, in Freeland, USA. The Rachael Allen features Sea Machines Robotics’ SM300 autonomous-command and -control system. The system's capabilities include transit autonomy, as well as remote access of the tugboat’s onboard machinery, a feature that allows personnel to manage and support operations from anywhere on board the vessel or from shore. Navigation obstacle detection and avoidance capabilities also come standard. Once delivered, the groundbreaking 100-foot-long tug will be deployed in California, where it will provide tanker escort and ship assists. And while the Rachael Allen will be delivered with the SM300 and supporting hardware fully integrated, the capability of the technology will be activated in stepped phases over the course of six to nine months to ensure full visibility and acceptance from all operational stakeholders. “Foss is leveraging Sea Machines’ cutting-edge technology to take on the routine work and allow crew to focus on higher-level tasks and improve safety, while also increasing productivity and efficiency during harbor operations,” said Will Roberts, Foss president and CEO. “Foss prides itself on always offering customers safe and innovative solutions, and this is one more way that we are delivering on that promise.” Capitalizing on Sea Machines’ remote command and control capabilities, Foss will use its existing Fleet Monitoring Center personnel to monitor the tugboat’s systems and operating domain via streaming video and sensor data. According to Sea Machines, its system enables an extra set of eyes and hands to have access to vessel command and control, allowing Foss and the Rachael Allen crew to maximize productive time, safety and crew welfare. Michael G. Johnson, Sea Machines founder and CEO, said, “While our space has seen a number of government-innovation backed prototype initiatives for autonomous tugs in Europe, Japan and Singapore, it’s notable that Foss is launching the first commercially funded project in U.S. waters. “Our technology has been in use aboard commercial vessels around the world for nearly three years and is backed up by thousands of hours of testing and validation. This is yet another real-world example of how Sea Machines autonomy is reshaping the way work is being done by vessel crews on the water.” Sea Machines noted the Rachael Allen project will mark its first installation of an autonomy system on a vessel over 5,000 horsepower. Designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, the vessel will be able to escort the largest tankers and containerships calling the U.S. West Coast ports that it will serve. The tug is outfitted with two MTU Tier 4 engines, producing 6,866 horsepower and coupled to Kongsberg US255 azimuth thrusters. It is outfitted with Mackay Marine Electronics, and towing equipment consists of a Markey DEPGF-52R winch with 750 feet of 10 inch synthetic line on the bow and a Markey DEPC-32 stern winch with 250 feet of 6.5-inch circumference line on the stern. This collaboration is not the first for Foss and Sea Machines. In 2020, the two companies teamed up in support of the multi-year project for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). During an October DIU demonstration in Tacoma, Wash., Sea Machines and Foss outfitted a remotely commanded deck barge to land helicopters and host a scaled fueling station for aircraft, surface vessels and shore replenishment. Using the SM300, shoreside operators had remote situational awareness and were able to demonstrate the capabilities of remote command and control of the vessel, its operating systems and flight deck in a live marine environment. www.sea-machines.com

Fratelli Neri three tugs naming ceremony
Recently Fratelli Neri held a naming ceremony for three Damen RSD Tugs 2513 in Livorno, Italy. The vessels join a fleet of several Damen tugs. Two of the vessels, named Romito and Calafuria were built at Damen Shipyards Galati and were delivered to Fratelli Neri at the end of 2019. Both of these tugs offer 70 tonnes bollard pull in the configuration tractor tug. The latest addition to the company’s fleet has been named Gabriella Neri, for the wife of Chairman Piero Neri. Damen built the vessel at Damen Song Cam Shipyard and delivered her in Livorno in January this year. This is the most powerful of the three, with 80 tonnes bollard pull. All three of the tugs are equipped with FiFi1 and feature escort, oil recovery, salvage notation and are fully compliant with Italian Flag regulations. The design of the RSD Tug 2513 combines characteristics of both tractor and ASD tugs to create a vessel which always sails and operates bow first. For this reason the tug is equally effective at both bow and stern towage operations. As one of Damen’s Next Generation Tugs Series, the RSD tug 2513 has a focus on offering increased safety, sustainability, reliability and efficiency. Fratelli Neri managing director Corrado Neri said. “We are delighted to have taken delivery of Romito, Calafuria and Gabriella Neri from Damen Shipyards. The new tugs’ versatility, high power and low emissions make them an ideal addition to our existing fleet, allowing us to continue to provide the highest standard of service to our customers with safety excellence.” Damen area manager Antonio Marte said, “We are honoured to once again deliver Damen vessels to Fratelli Neri. These three tugs confirm the long term vision and innovative will of the Neri family. Romito and Calafuria were in fact among the first Damen tugs to feature IMO Tier III readiness for reduction of NOX emissions, the revolutionary Twin Fin concept to provide maximum directional stability and higher towing forces, the resilient mount superstructure to minimise noise and vibration for optimal crew comfort and the Damen Safety Glass to enhance highest safety in operations. Additionally, the Gabriella Neri has the Damen Triton remote monitoring system. With Triton it’s possible to monitor the performance of the vessel in real time from the office, facilitating operational optimisation. I am sure that these three vessels will serve Livorno port extremely well and I look forward to continuing supporting Fratelli Neri going forwards.” Fratelli Neri, like Damen, is a family company with a long history. Founded by Costante Neri in the 19th century, the company today operates a fleet of over 40 vessels. www.damen.com

Approval in Principle for Wind-Assisted Containership The industry, in general, is currently looking into many different concepts for harnessing wind energy as part of the efforts to reduce emissions and improve ship operations. The latest concept to be advanced is for a short sea or feeder containership that combines wind with an LNG power plant and advancements in design to create a more efficient vessel. This concept is known as Trade Wings 2500 and the design has been awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas. The concept is for a containership with a capacity of 2,500 TEU and is a combination of windassisted propulsion with six Oceanwings and LNG-electric propulsion with pods. The wing sails are installed on a vertical sliding mechanism to partially retract while the vessel is in port to reduce interference with cargo operations. The LNG storage tank is based on GTT’ Mark III containment system and the LNG power plant is a 4-strokes gensets. It is a flexible platform that would make it possible to transition to future fuels such as Ammonia or Hydrogen. According to the designers and BV, the Trade Wings 2500 will save on average 35 percent CO2 equivalent emissions compared to a conventional design. Their calculations were made based on a typical 4,000 nautical mile transatlantic route comparing the Trade Wings operating at the same speed to a convention ship with a 2-stroke engine, single shaft, and without wing sails. The Trade Wings’ Oceanwings accounts for 57 percent of the reduction with the optimized LNG thermal propulsion delivering the remaining 43 percent of the reduction in emissions. “Wind-assisted propulsion is a high-potential solution that can contribute to the long-term decarbonization of the marine industry,” said Alex Gregg Smith, Senior Vice-President, Bureau Veritas North Asia. “We have just released new wind propulsion system rules – and this innovative design, approved in principle by BV, demonstrates the feasibility of wind-assisted propulsion on board container ships with deck space limitations.” The design is created by a partnership between French firms VPLP Design, Alwena Shipping, and AYRO, and the Chinese Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), the concept is for a 32,500 dwt containership. It would measure 646 feet in length with a beam of 105 feet. According to the companies, the design is suitable for short sea shipping or feeder operations in Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and China. The Trade Wings 2500 could also operate on the transatlantic trade. In addition to the retractable sails, the vessel features other design considerations for its commercial operations. Benefitting from a coverless hatch and LNG electric pod propulsion, the design provides both operational flexibility and improved efficiency to reduce port time. The propulsion pods increase manoeuvrability while the coverless hatch design speeds up cargo operations. https://group.bureauveritas.com

Alfa Laval wins the order for Viktor Friberg
three LPG fuel supply systems in the expanding Japanese market
Alfa Laval has received an order for three units of the Alfa Laval FCM LPG, the low-flashpoint fuel supply system (LFSS) developed in partnership with MAN Energy Solutions. By selecting the FCM LPG, owners of LPG carriers can combine their cargo handling system of choice with an LFSS built on fuel treatment expertise and proven experience with engine applications. The LFSS order was signed in December 2020 with IMEX Co., Ltd., which builds MAN Energy Solutions licenced engines in Japan as a subsidiary company of Hitachi Zosen Corporation. The order comprises three Alfa Laval FCM LPG systems that will be installed on three Japanese LPG carriers. Using LPG cargo as fuel is an attractive solution on such vessels, since it reduces SOx emissions to near zero and provides easy compliance with the global sulphur cap. The LFSS will be integrated in the cargo handling system with significant advantages that come from relying on an experienced fuel treatment supplier “LPG as fuel is a new application with demonstrated challenges, such as the risk of interruptions and unplanned fuel changes if the filtration is insufficient to remove LPG’s impurities,” says Alfa Laval’s Viktor Friberg, Head of Marine Separation. “The FCM LPG builds on Alfa Laval’s deep fuel treatment knowledge and our long history with engine applications, but it also works seamlessly with the shipowner’s chosen cargo handling system.” The flexibility of the FCM LPG comes from its smart design. Essentially, the LFSS core developed by Alfa Laval and tested with MAN Energy Solutions is placed within an adaptable system framework. This makes it easy to match both the available space and the cargo handling equipment. “The FCM LPG can be adapted to the layout and routines of any cargo handling system,” continues Friberg. “This ensures complete integration and flawless operation - so the LPG carrier experiences the best of both worlds.” The three FCM LPG modules will be delivered to IMEX beginning in Q4 2021. After each engine is tested, it will be moved with the FCM LPG system to Sasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for installation. “These will be the first ME-LGIP engines delivered for us by IMEX,” comments Kjeld Aabo, Director New Technology 2-stroke at MAN Energy Solutions. “We are pleased to see the LPG market expand in Japan, and we know from a long history of working together that Alfa Laval provides excellent support to our manufacturing licensees. Alfa Laval has been a strong partner to MAN Energy Solutions throughout the fuel line development for our ME-LGIP engine design.” As emission limits and climate goals cause marine fuels to diversify, Alfa Laval is supporting a wide variety of fuel choices under the Fuel Conditioning Module (FCM) concept. Alfa Laval FCM Methanol systems, for example, are now approaching 100,000 running hours. LPG is an important fuel in its own right, but it also represents an important step on the path to ammonia. “Ammonia is widely seen as the ideal fuel for tomorrow’s zero-carbon operations,” adds Friberg. “Marine engines that run on ammonia will be available in less than three years, and Alfa Laval will be ready. Due to technical similarities between LPG and ammonia operation, the FCM LPG has been a powerful springboard for our ongoing development of an ammonia fuel supply system.” www.alfalaval.com

Official launch of The Maritime Standard Awards 2021 Work is already well underway in preparation for one of the most popular and keenly anticipated events on the shipping industry calendar - The Maritime Standard Awards 2021 - which will take place on Monday November 22nd in Dubai, UAE. This will be the eighth staging of the Awards. Last year they were the only maritime event to be held in person, despite all the challenges, in line with UAE governmental health and safety guidelines and this will again be the case in 2021. Of course, it is hoped that restrictions will be less onerous, given the roll out of Covid vaccinations, but the TMS Awards will adapt to whatever the prevailing circumstances are. This year the Awards will again be held at Dubai World Trade Centre, which is certified with the prestigious Bureau Veritas SafeGuard Label, which attests to its compliance with the highest hygiene standards. Together with this, DWTC’s own ‘Venue Safe’ standards ensure strict adherence to all safety and hygiene measures for the safe return of organised events. The confidence in the venue and TMS as the organiser was reflected in an attendance of almost 500 people last year, an exceptional figure in the circumstances, which shows how much belief the industry has in TMS. Trevor Pereira, Managing Director of The Maritime Standard, says, “Last year’s event showed that Dubai led the world in holding events safely in these Covid times and we will build on that valuable experience gained with our partners to stage an even more successful Awards in 2021. The support we received from the industry, including all the major players, was tremendous and showed how keen people are to meet in person if they can trust the organisation.” Since the very beginning The Maritime Standard Awards have been held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman Emirates Airline and Group. They are always attended by over hundreds of dignitaries and high-level executives from across the maritime industry. The caliber and status of those attending is unrivalled, and the occasion offers extensive networking opportunities, as well as the chance for industry recognition. The Maritime Standard Awards are today justifiably recognised as the leading event of this type in the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. An experienced, expert and independent judging panel ensures that only the ‘best of the best’ are shortlisted and that the eventual winners are fully deserving of the accolade. As a result, the Awards are uniquely placed to recognise excellence and consistently high levels of performance in the ports, shipping, and related sectors. The Awards are always hosted by well-known personalities, with past MCs including Ruud Gullit, Alistair Campbell, Lara Dutta, Tim Wilcox and Jon Culshaw. The host for 2021 will be someone of similar stature. The evening will witness the presentation of around 30 different awards, covering different aspects of the maritime industry, as well as special awards for individual achievement. Sponsorship opportunities exist for each of these Awards, as well as the event overall, and present a fantastic opportunity for companies to raise their market profile. A high profile group of companies have agreed to sponsor this year’s awards, demonstrating their high profile and value. These include Abu Dhabi Ports, ADNOC Logistics & Services, ASYAD Shipping & Drydock Services, Bahri, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal, DP World, DNV, Islamic P&I Club, Lukoil Marine Lubricants, Safeen, Sharjah Port Authority, Tomini Shipping, Essar Ports, International Registries and Mariapps Marine Solutions.

Bio-inspired solution for hull air lubrication Fleet decarbonisation is a huge challenge for the whole industry, in response to which, over the last three years the AIRCOAT H2020 project has been developing an air-trapping adhesive film to be applied to ship hulls. The surface structure of the foil aims to retain air when submerged under water reducing the frictional resistance of the ship, forming a passive lubrication technology. As the project nears its completion, it is clear that the coming year will be an intense and productive time in order to achieve validation of the technology. After three years of research and small-scale experiments, both in laboratories and in open water, the project is ready to test the prototypes on a larger scale. With a one-year extension, due to Covid-based delays, the Aircoat Project will now finish in April 2022 and will be able to finalise the pilot experiments. Large-scale pilots are essential to demonstrate the efficiency and industrial feasibility in operational environments. The two experiments will be done on a research vessel and a container ship. The research ship experiment aims to observe the stability of the air retention of the foil. The container ship experiment is about observing its efficiency over time. This last step is fundamental for the product before being released on the market. For a container ship, more than 50% of the energy required for propulsion, or in the region of 70% of the total fuel usage, is used to overcome frictional resistance. Described as ‘bioinspired’ the team has tried to replicate the air trapping qualities displayed in the leaves of aquatic plants such as the Salvina. www.aircoat.eu

HullKeeper, hull optimisation programme
Jotun HullKeeper enables ship operators to improve hull efficiency, lower costs and improve environmental performance. Following an extensive development process, Jotun is proud to introduce HullKeeper, a proactive hull optimisation programme. HullKeeper combines Jotun’s extensive digital capabilities, ROV inspections and trusted analytical and technical expertise to help operators keep fuel, inspection and cleaning costs under control. Designed by Jotun’s team of hull performance experts, the four-part programme optimises hull performance, regardless of the chosen coating. Ship operators can take full control of their operations through hull monitoring, fouling risk alerts, inspections and advisory services. Operators can benefit from the complete package or select only the parts that work for them. The HullKeeper programme is grounded in Jotun’s proprietary fouling risk algorithm, supported by data from different sources to make fouling control and efficiency more predictable. By providing insight into issues before they occur, ship operators can take planned corrective actions. And as more data and information accumulate, best practices can be identified and implemented across the whole fleet. According to Stein Kjølberg, Jotun’s Global Category Director Hull Performance, more ship operators have recognised that proactive fouling control and hull efficiency are critical to managing increasingly strict regulations, rising fuel costs and environmental performance. “Jotun has a proven record of developing products and services that help customers meet the demands of a changing industry,” he says. “HullKeeper extends the range of our services, helping operators make well-informed and proactive decisions to improve hull efficiency as they push for optimal performance, efficiency and regulatory compliance.” www.jotun.com

Global Marine wellbeing initiative The Global Marine Group (GMG) has consistently been at the forefront of innovation within the offshore, oil & gas and renewables industry. Whether it’s driving technological excellence in subsea engineering, pioneering world-class training or building vital infrastructure that supports billions of people worldwide they lead the charge for change. Now they are looking to change the way they work, with an innovative remote working initiative that will allow employees world-wide to have more control over their work-life balance and will lead to a massive positive impact on the business’ CO2 output. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the learnings taken from a year in remote working environments, the Group is launching a new programme: GMG Evolution. The industry-first initiative represents the future of working and will help to create a healthier, happier Global Marine Group family and more environmentally friendly organisation. GMG Evolution is a unique working programme which encourages remote working for all of the employees across the organisation. It is entirely optional, but employees will now be able to determine how much time they spend in the office compared to their home, giving them more power over how they work. Employees will also be able to adjust their hours so that they can work when they’re most productive and move it around commitments such as childcare or school runs more flexibly. As a global leader in subsea engineering, they have over 900 personnel all over the world, across multiple time zones. This includes employees in offices, vessels, depots and offshore environments, all of which require a significant amount of energy to power increasing the business’ overall CO2 output. GMG Evolution is set to correct that. Regardless of where they work and how they work, they will all be part of the GMG Evolution programme, given full support from the business’ central teams to ensure they can take advantage of the benefits. These changes to the way GMG operates as a business are a result of listening to employees, customers and suppliers over the last 12 months and understanding their views. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions forced GMG to adapt its working practices over the past year, in order to maintain their growth trajectory. Like so many others, they invested in remote working at the start of the pandemic to ensure there was little to no disruption for their staff or customers. This shift to hybrid working has been hugely popular amongst GMG staff as evidenced through positive engagement in WinningTemp, their employee insight tool. By learning from these adaptations and interrogating the data, they have been able to determine a new more flexible way of working, tailored to individual circumstances - which benefits everyone but also decreased GMG’s CO2 footprint dramatically. The GMG Evolution scheme is also a commitment to ensure that the CO2 reduction we have seen will be sustainable. Ian Douglas, CEO of Global Marine Group spoke about the success of hybrid working, “GMG does not want to lose the best bits of these new ways of working by simply reverting to the 9 to 5 office-based patterns which were so ingrained in society pre-pandemic. We are committed to continually searching for ways that we can offer flexibility on work location while ensuring the way we work meets our customers’ needs. And there’s been no better opportunity than right now to make it happen.” “As an organisation there’s a lot we are working on to improve, streamline and also reduce carbon emissions for our onshore and offshore operations which requires smart engineering, innovative solutions and buy-in from our customers. A key example of that is our recently launched CWind Pioneer, a hybrid surface effect ship (SES) which sees up to 50% fuel savings over a conventional CTV, saving over 110 tonnes of CO2 per year by comparison for a single vessel.” He continued, “But when the pandemic forced GMG to work remotely as a collective and therefore heavily reduce the everyday emissions that so many of us omit, it was a eureka moment enabling us to reduce yet another stream of our organisational carbon footprint.” GMG Evolution has already brought about positive change. By giving GMG employees the freedom to choose how they want to work, the business is putting the needs of its staff first - creating a stronger, more flexible work-life balance. Internal data shows that 50% of the workforce have already seen a productivity increase through remote working. GMG doesn’t want to see that end. What’s more, by being less focused on their hub locations, GMG are able to recruit from a much wider talent pool than before. GMG Evolution will give the business access to the very best workforce regardless of their location therefore assuring the highest levels of service for customers are still upheld. On top of the encouragement of flexible working GMG are modifying office locations so that they are more centred around collaboration making it easy for teams to meet and work together on projects, training, creative thinking and strategic planning - with open-plan and adaptable facilities to enable them to do so. The aim of the GMG Evolution scheme isn’t just limited to improving the business’ philosophy on work culture, it is also a progression of their efforts to reduce carbon emissions. By cutting down office energy bills and lengthy commutes for employees, GMG is doing their part in the fight against climate change. The average UK home to work commute by car is 23 miles per day GMG has 315 office-based employees in the UK. Using these numbers in the last 12 months GMG have saved 1,702,575 commuter miles on UK roads by facilitating teams to work from home. This equates to approximately 389 tonnes of CO2 not being released into the atmosphere since the first lockdown began! Given the flexible, hybrid approach that is going to be offered to all going forward through the GMG Evolution Programme, the reduction of GMG’s corporate carbon footprint will be Tel: +44(0) 2392 472710 remarkable. This will mean less energy, heating and lighting within offices, and may also reduce Mob: +44(0) 7850 473713 commuter miles by on average 60% per person - equating to a huge annual saving of around 233 E-Mail: info@fdsukltd.com tonnes of CO2 emissions. Web: www.fdsukltd.com GMG are currently in the process of trialling the GMG Evolution scheme across multiple business units ahead of a full rollout in mid-2021. GMG will continue to monitor the efficacy of the programme to ensure they are delivering the same quality service for customers whilst continuing to support their employees. This long-term initiative is tied to GMG’s 5-year business plan which aims to create a template for other businesses of their scale to follow. Not just in offshore and

Hurtigruten invests in batteries and biofuel to cut
emissions by 25%
Batteries, shore power and biofuel are at the core of Hurtigruten Group’s large-scale green upgrade of the entire fleet of Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express ships. The result is CO2 emissions will be reduced by least 25%, and NOx emissions cut by 80%. In what is described as one of the largest environmental upgrades in the history of European shipping, all seven Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express ships will undergo significant green upgrades by 2023. “The world’s most beautiful voyage just got even better. We are combining the best available technical solutions and cutting CO2 emissions along the Norwegian coast with at least a quarter. And most importantly, we are laying the foundation for introducing new and even more efficient environmental solutions as they are developed,” comments Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express CEO Hedda Felin.
Battery hybrid upgrades
The ships will be upgraded using a combination of technologies and solutions specially adapted for each individual ship. All ships have already been fitted with shore-power connectivity - to fully eliminate emissions when connected in port. Three ships - MS Richard With, MS Nordlys and MS Kong Harald - will undergo a full-fledged transformation to battery-hybrid power, with installation of new low-emission engines and large battery packs. Across the seven ships, the upgrades will reduce CO2 emissions by 25%, and cut NOx emissions by massive 80%. “This is one of the largest environmental vessel upgrade projects that has been done in Europe. For us, it’s rewarding to work with a company which shares our ambitious approach to technology and environmental issues. The green upgrades of Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express’ ships represent a sustainable choice for their existing fleet, says President Egil Haugsdal of Kongsberg Maritime (KM) - which has been awarded the three-ship hybrid conversion contract.” KM has partnered with Norway’s Myklebust yard for the first battery-hybrid upgrade.
New steps towards zero emissions
Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express is part of Hurtigruten Group, the world’s leading adventure travel group, which also includes Hurtigruten Expeditions, the world’s largest expedition cruise line. “Our goal is to operate all our ships and all our cruises completely emission-free. While we get one step closer day-by-day, we cannot sit idle and wait for the technology to be in place. We are working closely with our partners do drive change, move boundaries while we at the same time utilize the best solutions available already today,” says Hurtigruten Group CEO Daniel Skjeldam. To ensure immediate effect of the green upgrade program already as Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express returns all seven ships to operation this summer, certified biofuel will be introduced across the fleet. Hurtigruten Expeditions will also start trials with biofuel on selected ships and selected itineraries in 2021.
Green pioneers
The green upgrades of the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express ships are the latest in a series of large-scale investment in sustainability and green technology in Hurtigruten Group: Hurtigruten Expeditions has launched the world’s first battery-hybrid-powered cruise ships, MS Roald Amundsen, and MS Fridtjof Nansen. This spring, Hurtigruten Expeditions is transforming MS Finnmarken to the battery-hybrid powered expedition cruise ship MS Otto Sverdrup, with large battery packs and advanced green technology. In 2018, Hurtigruten Group celebrated its 125th anniversary by being the first cruise line and major travel company to ban single-use plastic. Across companies and destinations, Hurtigruten Group is working closely with local communities, suppliers and partners in the quest for more sustainable operations. www.hurtigruten.com

Damen Maaskant reaches milestone in Rederij Long Ships trawler construction Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam has reached a major milestone in its construction of a 38-metre trawler for Belgiumbased Rederij Long Ships. The hull has been launched into the water in Poland and has been transported to Stellendam for further outfitting. Speaking on the occasion of the Z91 Franson, Rederij Long Ships owner Eddie Cattoor thanked the personnel of the Gdansk yard for all their efforts throughout a hard winter. He said, “I expect a lot from Franson. First and foremost to bring in food from the wide seas. Food that will supply a growing world population. She will also play an economically important role, contributing to the Flemish economy and employment in the ports and fish trade and especially in creating a livelihood for our Flemish fishermen. “They will experience job satisfaction in the Franson, which is a safe, efficient and ergonomic ship. A ship that meets all modern and contemporary requirements and that will be further completed with the best accommodation for the crew, who have to work hard for many days at sea.” Franson is a new design, the BT3808. She features the maximum tonnage and length permitted by the Belgian Maritime Inspectorate. Maaskant have modified the vessel in order to realise a 12% increase in bollard pull during trawling. Rederij Long Ships was founded in 1934 by the current owner’s grandfather. This latest addition to the company’s fleet will replace the vessel Z90 Francine. It will be used to fish year round in the waters of the North Sea and the Skagerak and, in the summer, the Bay of Biscay. www.damen.com

Innovative
Indonesian
Tank Boat
tests
In recent months an Indonesian consortium led by state-owned defence corporation PT Pindad launched a prototype of the locally built ‘Tank Boat’ catamaran gunboat in the waters off Banyuwangi, East Java. The Tank Boat is derived from the platform X18 of Indonesian boatbuilder PT Lundin Industry Invest. As far back as 2014, PT Lundin unveiled a design for the 18metre vessel, and it has joined forces with state owned defence corporation PT Pindad, electronics group PT Len and engineering firm PT Hariff to develop the concept. At the Indo Defense 2016 exhibition in Jakarta, a full-scale mock-up of the vessel was first made public. The vessel is unique for its turret-mounted cannon, and it is primarily intended for use in ‘brown water’ operations in Indonesia. It is large enough to carry more than an Indonesian Army platoon. Turret gun options on the vessel include the Cockerill 105mm cannon, a 30mm autocannon, or a Belgian CMI Defence rifled 105mm cannon. These are high-power weapons usually found on tanks, not on patrol boats. PT Pindad commented in April that it hopes that the Tank Boat will assist the Indonesian Army in performing patrols along the oceans, rivers, and coasts of Indonesia and also to support coast guard operations. It is also designed to provide shortand long-range fire support when required. The boat tank is fitted with a pair of 1,200 hp MAN V8 engines and MJP450 hydro jets, which can carry it to a maximum speed of 40 knots. The vessel can cover transit ranges of up to 600 nautical miles at nine knots and can carry up to 60 soldiers, according to PT Pindad. www.pindad.com www.marineandmaritimegazette.com

Portugal’s largest Travelift now fully operational in the Algarve The largest Travelift on the Portuguese continental coast, a 300MT Marine Travelift is in Portimão on the Algarve coast. The 20year-old machine is fully operational following comprehensive repair and maintenance in the first term of 2021 by Almovi a lifting equipment specialist. Almovi is a service provider and is also the distributor of renown brands such as Marine Travelift boat hoists, Grove cranes, Genie platforms and Sennebogen crawler cranes. Almovi’ s strength comes in the form of a highly trained and well-organized service team with the capability of carrying out corrective repair work and taking on all preventive service and inspection duties over a longer period. The Travelift and boat yard in Portimão is operated by the public entity ‘Docapesca’ a significant marine institution whose role is to manage the continent’s fishing and non commercial public harbours including boat yards and respective equipment. Similar entities exist in the Portuguese archipelagos such as ‘Portos dos Açores’ in the Azores and ‘APRAM’ in the Madeira islands. Almovi works closely with all three entities providing regular service and parts for lifting equipment. As with most boatyards in southern Europe the Covid pandemic has increased activity as customers prepare for the summer season afloat. “Since the last quarter of 2020, we have noticed a significant increase in requests for assistance and preventive maintenance for harbor equipment”, says Manuel Arriaga, Almovi’ s managing director. “We have also seen a drive to have equipment certified, an annual requirement for all lifting equipment in Portugal”. Almovi’s activity covers multiple segments from construction to industry however its origin as a port equipment supplier date back to 1956 when the Ahlers Lindley sold a 5 ton steam shunting crane manufactured by Thomas Smith & Son, ltd to the Portuguese naval shipyard ‘Arsenal do Alfeite’. Today as part of Grupo Lindley, Almovi continues to work closely with ports and harbours supplying the quality equipment, for example in 2020 year Almovi supplied a 120T mobile harbour crane for the Port of Praia da Vitoria in the Azores in collaboration with Gottwald (Konecranes). Almovi’ s service team is available to travel around the world and provide its services. Various manufacturers rely on Almovi to commission and service their equipment. In 2020 Almovi commissioned boat handling equipment in Brazil and serviced equipment in Spain, Algeria, Angola, and Mozambique. For Manuel Arriaga this is the ultimate sign of confidence in his team: “It is an immense satisfaction for us to feel that not only our customers but also our partners and suppliers trust the experience and capabilities of our technical team.” www.almovi.pt

Next Geosolutions to survey the West
section of Tyrrhenian
Link power cables for Italian TSO Terna Next Geosolutions, the international survey and offshore construction support service contractor, with the support of CoNISMa (National InterUniversity Consortium for Marine Sciences) which will perform environmental survey tasks, has been awarded the survey works for the West Link of the Tyrrhenian Link project by Terna, the company that manages the Italian national transmission grid for high and extra-high voltage power. The Tyrrhenian Link is a new electricity corridor at the centre of the Mediterranean Sea and will connect Sicily with Sardinia and the Italian peninsula via a double underwater cable system, divided in two sections: EAST LINK from Sicily to Campania and WEST LINK from Sicily to Sardinia. Altogether, the HVDC link will have a length of 950 kilometres and a capacity of 1000 MW, supported by a massive investment from Terna of approximately 3,7 billion Euro over the next few years. The West Link, with its 471km length and 2120m depth below sea level, will be, once completed, the deepest submarine power cable in the world, breaking the current record of 1600m still held by Terna with the SAPEI Link between Sardinia and the Italian peninsula. The final aim of the survey is the identification of the reference routes of the two pole cables and one electrode submarine cable at Sardinia side. To achieve that, NextGeo will execute reconnaissance multi-beam survey, detailed ROV-based geophysical survey, geotechnical survey and environmental investigations, both nearshore and offshore. www.nextgeosolutions.com
