Chawama Butchery Bonanza
The month of March brings us to women’s day, a time to remember all the mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and female friends who have impacted our lives. What better time to show our appreciation? In March we also celebrate Youth day, recognising the power and potential of the next generation. Continue to dream big and work hard! Many more, in April, will join the millions around the world commemorating Easter, a time to reflect on sacrifice and thankfulness. In all our celebrations, it is good to gather around a meal and spend quality time with those we care about. It is a great way to make memories that will last for a long time to come.

My Experience
The WOMEN
in my life © BENNY BLOW
W
omen! Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. They’re such a complex species. There isn’t a wizard alive that could outperform a woman’s magic! They can turn mounds into mountains; melt the coldest of hearts and even transform boys to men. I have a love-hate relationship with all the women in my life. I mean, I love my sisters and my mother. But I don’t hug-and-kiss-love them, you know? Lord knows I’d probably die before my mouth formed the words and I actually told them how I feel about them. My girlfriend and I are close enough, at least by my standards. I like her. Maybe even like her very much. But love her? I don’t know. I think that quota has already been fulfilled. People can’t just be throwing emotions like that around now, can they? What kind of world would it be? I’m not the easiest guy to get along with. My girlfriend will attest to that. And my mother always remarks that I’d be far more handsome if I didn’t have a scar or bruise on my face each week. People just do not understand me. I figure I understand most people. A lot of them are hard headed and need some sense knocked into them. What I don’t understand are women. I only recently began to wrap my head around the concept of gender equality. I’d always ask my sisters, ‘How can we be equal when you feminist types claim you don’t want preferential treatment, and then turn right around and claim, “ladies first,” in queues or any opportunity that presents itself?’. This debate usually ends with me getting curling tongs thrown at me. My sisters say I’m insensitive. My mother agrees. And so did I when she scalded me sometime last year. I was over at my mother’s that weekend, sipping
on a brew and chatting with her. I was on one of my usual rants and she was listening attentively. I must have had one too many drinks, because I began barking something about how weak women are. She said to me, “Weak? And how do you think you got so strong? Didn’t I, a woman, raise you by myself? Who told you to stand up to the bullies in school when you were younger? I worked my way up a male dominated hierarchy at work just so I could make a better life for you! How easily you forget, it was your sisters and I that encouraged you to get back up and find a new job when all you wanted to do was wallow in your drunken sadness after you lost your previous one. And I’ve never asked for anything in return. Yet here you are asking for acknowledgement because you’re so strong. Weak. Hah!” That got me thinking about my whole perspective on women. I wouldn’t be the man I am if I wasn’t raised by a loving woman. I decided I’d show some kind of appreciation to the women in my life. So I made a few calls to my mother’s old friends, people she hadn’t seen in ages and I did the same for my sisters and girlfriend. I’d never thrown a party before, but I knew if I was going to, I needed some A-grade meat products. Zambeef has never disappointed me in that department. NOTHING beats their delicious steak and sausages. And I think good food is important if you’re bringing family together! The cookout was a success and I apologised to my mother, sisters and even my girlfriend for taking them for granted. I didn’t say exactly how much I loved them, but I think they understood. •••••••••••••••••• Happy women’s day!

CHICKEN © KELARA KHUMALO

amchick has become a big part of Zambian life. It’s an unspoken rule that a party is not quite a party without chicken. I have been to several kids’ parties where the plate is filled with sweets, crisps and biscuits but somehow chicken still found its way on to the plate. Christmas is not complete without chicken, and that goes for any other occasion. Let’s face it we are a nation obsessed with chicken. We can thank Zamchick for keeping us supplied with as much chicken as we like. It turns out that our chicken obsession is not a bad thing at all. The health benefits of chicken are endless. So the next time you reach for a chicken piece you can smile knowing that it gives you the following health benefits:
RICH IN PROTEIN
Chicken is a great source of low fat protein. The protein from chicken helps with muscle growth and development. It also prevents bone loss. As you get older chicken should be a prominent part of your diet!
NATURAL ANTI- DEPRESSANT
Chicken is high in an amino acid called tryptophan which gives you a comforting feeling. If you’re depressed eating chicken will increase serotonin levels in your brain and
enhance your mood.
GOOD FOR HEALTHY HEARTS Eating chicken suppresses and controls homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that can cause cardiovascular disease if levels are high in the body.
RICH IN PHOSPHORUS
Phosphorus is a mineral that supports your teeth and bones as well as kidney, liver and central nervous system function.
PROMOTES EYE HEALTH
Chicken contains high levels of retinol, lycopene, alpha and beta carotene all derived from Vitamin A and all vital for healthy eyes.
RICH IN NIACIN
Niacin guards against cancer and other forms of genetic (DNA) damage.
GOOD FOR GROWTH
HEALTHY
TISSUE
Many people are plagued with chapped lips, and cracked mouths. That can be fixed by introducing chicken to your diet. So there you have it, Zambia’s obsession with chicken could be the healthiest choice we have made to date!

My Experience
T
he number of overweight and obese people in Zambia is on the rise. This may be due to different factors such as more sedentary lifestyles, little or no exercise and bad eating habits. This in turn leads to health problems such as heart disease and high blood pressure. However these diseases can be prevented or controlled by adopting healthy eating habits. Most people think being healthy requires an expensive lifestyle but that is far from the truth. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is affordable, even for the ordinary Zambian. Here are a few healthy practices you can adopt.
1.
Plan your meals: Imagine getting home hungry after a long day at work and you have no idea what to eat. The first thing that you reach for will probably be junk food. Planning your meals in advance is the best way to avoid overeating or unhealthy eating. The best time to plan is at the beginning of the week. Cut your vegetables in advance or cook the meat you will eat during the week. Then all you will need to do is to put the finishing touches before eating a wholesome meal.
2.
Grill your food: Grilled food can taste just as good as fried food with the right seasonings. But if you absolutely must fry your food, use vegetable or olive oil. When you grill chicken, be sure to remove the skin because that is where most of the fat resides.
3.
Eat
it should never reach that point. Hydrate yourself constantly. Drink 2 litres of water daily and more if you are exercising or sweating profusely.
5.
Moderate food portions: One of the reasons for being overweight is large portion sizes. People simply eat too much. So reduce portion sizes and try to eat just enough to get full. You can do this by putting your food on a small plate. This will make your food seem a lot. Moderation is important. You won’t need to cut out any food from your diet if you eat it in moderation.
6
steps to a
healthier
breakfast: Most people try to lose weight by skipping breakfast, but all that it does is slow down your metabolism and lower your energy levels. Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast. Eggs are a very good source of protein and are not very expensive. Add to your breakfast boiled, fried or scrambled eggs.
lifestyle
4.
Drink more water: Most people only drink water when thirsty. Thirst is the body’s way of crying out for water and
12
6.
Eat slowly: It takes 20 minutes for your brain to register when you get full, so when you eat fast, you run the risk of over eating. Eating slowly ensures that your stomach and your brain work at the same pace. Avoid eating in front of the television because you don’t focus on the food, leading to overeating.
It should be noted that healthy eating is not the same as being on a diet. Diets are temporary but healthy eating is a lifestyle. The key to achieving these habits is to adopt them one at a time. Attempting to practice all of them at once will only lead to failure. Take one small step towards healthy habits each day.

ambeef Products Plc has built a team of dedicated and hardworking staff, because it has highlighted the value of teamwork. Every staff member plays a crucial role in the system, and each company performs like a well-oiled machine. It has invested in the welfare of its human resource, and has reaped the benefits over time. One clear example is Mr Raphael Sichechani, a lab technician who provides quality advisory services to suppliers of dairy products. His journey with Zambeef began in 2006. He joined the organisation as a general worker under Zamchick. His ambition led him to pursue academic studies at Evelyn Hone College, a move that was supported by his employers. He was studying to become a lab technician, and Zambeef facilitated his vacation attachment to Zammilk, with the support of Mr Mbao, the Zammilk plant manager. Raphael graduated in 2009 and in 2010 he was put on a fixed contract as a fully qualified lab technician. He attests to learning the value of teamwork while working for Zambeef. “There is

Zambeef made me what I am, and I am a very proud employee.” The core values are clear. Diligence and hard work are rewarded, benefiting the individual, the company, and the consumers, who can be assured that they are buying high quality products. The Zammilk factory produces our favourite dairy products under the strictest conditions, where quality control begins from testing the milk that is supplied. Every stage is monitored and the strictest hygiene standards are observed and enforced by all employees. Raphael provides advisory services to suppliers, ensuring they provide milk that is up to the Zammilk standard. “Be hard working and honest” Raphael advised, “and you can go far. These are the most important qualities”. Raphael is a family man, married with one child. He looks forward to a bright future with the company.

ammilk provides top quality dairy products all across the nation. These include fresh milk, lacto, Zamsip, yoghurt, butter, cheese and fresh cream. In a quest to provide only the best, strict standards are maintained in every step of the process to provide us with products we can trust and enjoy. Mr Bartholomew Mbao, the Zammilk plant manager, shed some light on how the company manages to stay at the top of their field. It all begins with controlling the quality of milk supplied to the factory. This means, Zammilk takes a keen interest in how farmers care for their cattle. Mr. Mbao told us, “The criteria for new milk suppliers are that they should provide milk from a healthy cowherd that is free from Tuberculosis (TB) and antibiotics. A health certificate for the milking herd is required.” He also commented on the importance of hygiene. “Hygiene at the

milking parlour must be maintained in order to supply milk with low bacterial load. We have an extension service on hand to help emerging dairy farmers to achieve all this.” Milk delivered to the factory must have a number of important qualities: • It must be fresh with a typical fresh milk smell and colour, and it shouldn’t have an off-putting flavours. • It should be free of foreign matter • It should not be adulterated with water or anything else. • It should not contain residue like cleaning chemicals or antibiotics. “Tests are done by our in-house lab on every milk delivery to check that it conforms to specs” Mr. Mbao emphasised, “ Non conforming deliveries are rejected and our extension officers contact the supplier for any corrective actions by the

This is the true secret of good quality products. supplier.” This means, there is no possibility of a sub-standard delivery getting past their doors. However, Zammilk does not simply reject suppliers. They make the extra effort to educate the farmers, and show them how to produce such high quality milk. “Zammilk utilises its extension service to help the farmer address the healthy concerns”, Mr. Mbao added. “Training in the form of field days is also offered to our suppliers.”
The key to this whole process is the dedicated workforce that pays attention to detail at all stages of processing. This is the true secret of good quality products. Zambeef management has invested in modern processing machinery for the plant. That is not all; the Zammilk plant is currently undergoing extension works. These expansion works will benefit the growing number of consumers, as well as suppliers. “The small scale farmers and emerging farmers will see their household incomes increase and therefore their lives will improve. With this business linkage Zammilk will contribute positively to the local economy. This expansion will also mean employing additional staff”. The growth of Zammilk is good news for the community and the nation as a whole. Let us support business that supports the local community, and that are here to stay!

Motivational Corner We need to attain certain levels of learning or education to be of better service to the community. That way we will be better equipped and able to make informed decisions. This is the best way to make an impact.
As we elect to better our lives, let us remember we need other people for this journey. Network with others who have similar goals and learn from their experiences.
make the choice to reach for your
DREAMS The year 2015 dawned, bringing the promise of a fresh start, renewed focus and many New Year’s resolutions. We were able to reflect and hopefully admit where we need to change. On a national level, the year started with elections, choices and resolutions on a larger scale.
Will our resolutions survive? Will we achieve those personal aspirations? It boils down to you and I, the individual, as we elect (or choose) to enforce our renewed focus; renewed energy towards being better people at home, in the community, at work and at school and in every sphere life. We all begin the year with a great desire for betterment. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs highlights how humans are ‘’wired’’, ultimately seeking self-actualisation, a phrase he coined during his research. We inherently wish for better things in our lives. The onus lies with each individual to elect a new mentor/strategy/ plan/motivation to drive us towards attaining our personal goals.
16
While you elect to attain these goals, there will definitely be antagonists, wrong advisers, and those pretenders who don’t want to see you succeed, all pulling in the opposite direction. You have to muster enough energy to thwart these elements. You must identify these opponents so that you can devise a counter attack. There are also the enemies known as procrastination, bad habits, time wasted on bitterness and quarrels, temptation to make shortcuts through corruption, and many more. These are lethal to your progress and they rob you of the pride of accomplishing something from hard work. It is always the right time to do what is right. As we elect to better our lives, let us remember we need other people for this journey. Network with others who have similar goals and learn from their experiences. Make use of technology but remember that it can be dehumanising and debilitating. It is known to reduce personal interaction, make us lazy where creativity is concerned and consume a lot of precious time on needless entertainment. It is up to you now! Choose to follow through on your resolutions and achieve your goals. Don’t be satisfied with dreaming about the destination, takes steps to move in the right direction! You will tell me that it was worth it!

Zambeef Butchery Bonanza Hits Chawama Regional Manager for Zambeef outlets Crag Scott, (second left), presents cheques and trophies to winning Zambeef butchery managers, accompanied by Group Marketing Head Lubinda Chamileke (on the right)
C
hawama, in Lusaka, was the latest venue for Zambeef’s popular Butchery of the Month competition draw. Customers flocked to the company’s neighbourhood outlet to discover who had won December’s prize draw. Excitement mounted that Saturday morning, and shoppers jostled to see the draw, in which participants stood a chance of winning the K50,000 prize, in the ‘50 pin at 50 years Butchery Bonanza’. Every month winning customers at each butchery also walk away with a K200 cash voucher to spend in their local Zambeef outlet. The monthly winner at each shop will then be entered into the national raffle draw for the grand prize, which will be drawn in Lusaka on May 6th, 2015. “Our Chawama customers have really entered into the spirit of the giveaway!” said Zambeef Group Marketing Head, Lubinda Chamileke. “Zambeef butcheries are at the heart of every community we serve, and now anyone has the chance to win K50, 000 cash – just for shopping at one of our butcheries. That’s enough money
18
to transform your family’s life.” To enter the draw, shoppers just need to make a purchase any Zambeef product for at least K35, complete the Customer Feedback slip, attach it to their Zambeef receipt slip and post in the entry box at any one of the 92 outlets. Each Zambeef receipt is equal to one entry, so customers can enter as many times as they wish. Zambeef members of staff and their families were not eligible to enter, but the 50 pin at 50 years Butchery Bonanza competition will also identify the best performing outlet to receive the “Butchery of the Month” accolade. The 50 pin at 50 years Butchery Bonanza was officially launched in November at Zambeef’s butchery at Sunningdale Mall, Alick Nkhata Road, Lusaka. It was kicked off by renowned ZNBC sports commentator Leonard Chibasa, where he presented soccer boots and balls to local schools. December’s Butchery of the Month draw was held in Mandevu.

BUILDING THE NATION ONE SCHOOL AT A TIME
Z
ambeef Products Plc continues to support the community, proving to be a responsible corporate citizen. One area that continues to receive support is education in rural area. One example is the construction of a classroom block at Chawama Primary School last year. The Chieftainess Lesa, government officials and local dignitaries, attended the handover of the classrooms, not to mention the excited schoolchildren. The company has further embarked on building a Grade 9 block this
year, and has unveiled plans to upgrade its flagship Mpongwe Farm School from primary to secondary status following impressive results last year by students. According to Head of Environment, Health and Safety, Mr. Jones Kayawe, who has been coordinating the project, “Happy, welleducated children are the starting point for Zambeef’s vision to build a nation of fulfilled citizens who are able to improve the well-being of their families and the wider community.”
