INSPIRED TO START ANEW © BENNY BLOW
“I
f great adventurers throughout history cowered in fear every time something in their lives changed, do you think we would still know them as great adventurers today?” My father was speaking in a tone I’d become all too familiar with. It was the same tone he’d use to coerce me into doing countless things. He spoke softly but he was actually verbally nudging me. Each time he used this tone everything he said could be summed up into these words: “I won’t have any more of this.” “We’ve been here for over a month now, and you still haven’t been outside,” dad said. “Did you know there’s a group of boys about your age that play football in the playground up the road?” I’d spied the boys from the car window each time my dad drove us past the playground. They would show off a couple of neat tricks, as if knowing I’d be watching them wide eyed. I imagined myself on that yellow-grassed pitch, trying out a few moves, but my envy wasn’t enough for me to go outside and brave this strange new place. Making new friends has always been an awkward thing for me. My father is an artist and he says he draws inspiration from travelling and exploring new lands, so we move around quite a lot. “The world is our backyard,” he often says.
He’s taken me to the sandy beaches of Siavonga, the snobbish cafés of Paris and even the crowded streets of New York. Jamaica was probably the most fun, even though it took me months to make one friend (whom I could barely understand because of his patois accent). We got along because of our mutual love for football. He’d introduced me to a pack of his friends and we’d all dribble the ball until the sun crept out of sight, and before we realised it, the day would be over. I still miss my time there. “I know you don’t read the newspaper, but I got curious the other day when I saw you holding it up and staring at it intently,” dad said breaking our awkward silence. “I knew you were probably looking at these,” he said smiling as he pulled out a shoe box. The advert in the paper wasn’t spectacular, but it had my imagination running wild. I’d played fantasy matches alongside Christiano Ronaldo in these very boots; they were the exact same colour and had that distinct white lightning streak across the side. Now I actually owned a pair. I obviously wasn’t going to be Ronaldo’s team mate, but I’m sure dad was hoping one of the boys at the playground would make a worthy substitute. I hated having to make new friends, but with my new Kaleza Football boots, I thought starting anew wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

Pork Chops

W
hen I was growing up, we didn’t have much variety in the way food was cooked. Meats were either stewed or fried, nothing else. I was raised thinking that was the only way to prepare food and had no idea there was a giant different culinary world out there. Pork would always be stewed to the point that I decided to never eat it again. I announced to my family and to the whole world that I had quit eating pork. I even managed to stay away from it for a number of years.
♦♦ 1 teaspoon of sugar ♦♦ 1 pinch of salt ♦♦ Garlic powder (I put garlic in everything) ♦♦ Barbeque spice I mix the ingredients and marinate the two pork chops in the mixture for 10 minutes.
During my next monthly shopping spree, when I was buying meat, I made sure I bought some pork chops from the local Zambeef shop. Now for a married woman, I’m not such a fan of cooking. My dislike of cooking is countered by my love for good food so I always end up in the kitchen. I searched the internet and asked around for a way to cook them but I kept getting complicated and conflicted recipes. That was when I decided to use what was already in my kitchen. Ingredients: ♦♦ 2 pork chops ♦♦ 2 tablespoons of barbeque sauce ♦♦ 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce
Needless to say that was not the last time I prepared that dish. I discovered the beauty of pork chops is in the softness and how quickly they can be prepared. This makes them very convenient for a week night when you’re straight from work and don’t have enough time to prepare supper. The other thing that appealed to me is how affordable pork chops are. I was able to buy a number of them without breaking the bank and that is a major plus in my books. They have now become a staple food in my home. One of these days, I plan on preparing some for my parents and siblings just to show that there’s more ways of cooking meat than just stewing and frying.
There are two main ways of preparing pork chops; frying or grilling. I rarely ever fry my food so I went with the grilling option. I put them in the oven to grill. Pork is very soft and doesn’t take long to cook so I kept watching the progress. When the tops had browned, Until one night at dinner with my husband I turned them. I made sure to check I had a bite of the pork chops he had that the inside was also cooked. ordered. It was so soft and so well Pork chops should not be too prepared that I swore I had never THE BEAUTY long in the oven because all eaten this before. My mouth was OF PORK CHOPS the moisture will evaporate and filled with visions of happiness IS IN THE SOFTNESS they will be rubbery. When they and colour. I wondered how were ready I took them out and pork could taste this good. I AND HOW QUICKLY let them rest for two minutes tried to ask for the recipe but THEY CAN BE before I served them. I served the waiter seemed reluctant to PREPARED the pork chops alongside potato let me in on the secret, so I didn’t wedges and steamed vegetables. push any further.

Staff Profile
Growing with the company: Profile of Mr Elasto Jere © Kambole Chituwo
M
r Elasto Jere can truly say he has grown with the company. He is a man of ambition, fuelled by his dream to shape his destiny. He joined Zambeef in 2005 as a security officer, and over the years, by hard work and academic advancement, he now serves in the accounts department as Creditors Accountant at Novatek Ltd, a subsidiary of Zambeef group of companies. This required determination, self-discipline and a work environment that was ready to recognise his achievements and reward him accordingly. In an interview, Mr Jere was glad to share his perspective on ambition and success. “When you join a company, you need to have patience and a vision. A vision breaks down the barriers. Even if you join a company as a cleaner, if you can see beyond your current position you can go far.” He was fortunate to join a company that embraces visionary and self-motivated individuals, which is the backbone of the company’s success. Big dreams fuel the next stage in progression. Vision fuels determination. “I was very determined. It will enable you to be a disciplined employee. That has been my core competence.” When someone dreams big, his or her attitude to money changes. Everything is different when you see the big picture. Mr Jere explained, “Life is not just about money. Money follows a vision. Destiny is accompanied by a vision. See how far I have come.” The Zambeef work environment played a significant role in bringing this vision to life. Mr Jere pointed out how observing and participating in the operations of Zambeef
“I was very determined. It will enable you to be a disciplined employee. That has been my core competence.” allowed him to learn first-hand what he was being taught in text books, in his accounting studies. He was able to make a quick connection between the principles of accounting and administration, and the practice in his work environment. The exposure was an education in itself. Suppliers are key partners in the operations of Novatek and Zambeef group of companies as a whole. Mr Jere is on the front line of dealing with suppliers, and he thoroughly enjoys his task. “There are two types of suppliers,” he told us, “well established and upcoming suppliers. My role involves creating a good working relationship. We empower the upcoming suppliers through advice on how to better run their business and paying on time. Paying on time is very important for suppliers who are not yet established, since operations-capital is often a challenge for them.” In the last few years, Mr Jere has continued to advance academically. In 2009 he obtained a diploma in business administration from the University of Zambia department of Extension Studies. In 2010 he obtained a Certificate in accounting. In 2011 he achieved status of ZICA (Accounting) Technician. In 2012 he obtained a Post-graduate diploma In theology by distance learning from the African Leadership Institute. He is currently studying for a Bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting with Liutebm University, and is due to complete the programme in December 2014. This pioneering mind-set is the key to personal and corporate progress. It is well worth encouraging and emulating.

Motivational Corner
5
things to add to your New Year’s resolutions
It’s a New Year and like every year, we’ve all made big resolutions. But most years we find that by June, not much has been achieved. We end up repeating the same resolutions again, not having achieved them the previous year. So this year, let’s do things differently. Instead of making resolutions and putting a time limit on them, let us set goals and widen the goal posts to ensure that we accomplish what we set out to do. (And of course celebrate when we have achieved it). Most times we travel a very narrow path from the beginning of the year, under the assumption that success (at work, business, and life) is only found through blood, sweat and tears. Yes, hard work is definitely an ingredient in the recipe for success, but so are motivation, mentorship, gratitude, generosity and networking. Let us take a closer look at these five things, and add them to our resolutions for 2015: Motivation: Find things in and around your life that motivate you when you feel ready to give up. It could be a loved one or a hobby. It must make you appreciate what you already have, but also make you want to strive for more. It could be a position in your company, or
16
By Samantha Dale a business idea, or even your marriage/relationship. Mentorship: Allow yourself to be mentored by someone that inspires you. This could be a colleague, a family member, your Pastor – someone you respect and can listen to and who will set you on the right path, should you go off track. It could even be a “celebrity” that has achieved similar success to what you hope to accomplish. You can use social media such as YouTube to listen to them speak about how they achieved their success. You can follow them on Facebook. You can also read books to open your mind and learn to think outside the box and learn to take calculated risks. Socialise: Networking has become a huge trend in Zambia. Some people use it as an excuse to party. That’s ok, but you must use it to meet people from different walks of life and backgrounds. You never know whose business card will open doors for you when you need a loan or a job or a door open to achieve your dream. Also, there’s greater advantage going out to meet new people than sitting at home watching TV. Generosity: Be generous, even when you don’t have. Give your time, your finances, and your thoughts. You will need to invest time to accomplish your dreams. You will also need help from friends or colleagues. Be remembered
for being kind. When you become generous, your own life will be blessed in ways you never expected. Don’t hold back on ideas and advice that could help someone else. Always be willing to help. Gratitude: In all things give thanks. No one likes to be around someone that is constantly complaining and focusing on the negative. Change your thought process and get to a place where even when it is raining, you can see a bit of sunshine on the horizon. People open doors for happy people! 2015!!! Are you prepared to watch your life unfold and attain achievements beyond your wildest dreams? I pray that this time next year we all will have a prosperous story to tell. Stay Blessed!
