4 Granab Subfloor System and Uponor Underfloor Heating System

To date, Granab’s patented and typeapproved floor joists systems have been installed in more than four million square metres of floor in residential properties, offices, schools, shops and public buildings. The Granab Subfloor System is typeapproved. It has been tested and certified by the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute (SP) with regard to its sound-damping properties, dynamic loads, strength and resilience. The stable galvanised steel joists are extremely strong and are not affected by moisture or temperature fluctuations. Other incorporated components are made of moisture-resistant materials. The subfloor system’s inbuilt impact-damping properties ensure comfortable and silent floors. A lot of people are looking to reduce their electricity consumption for heating and are switching instead to district heating or another energy source. Uponor Underfloor Heating Systems can be connected to all types of heat source. It is not uncommon for houses under construction or being renovated to be fitted with underfloor heating. By letting the warmth rise from the floor, heat is distributed evenly throughout the room. Optimum comfort is achieved using a room thermostat and individual regulation of all rooms. With warm floors, the room temperature can be reduced a few degrees. This benefits both your wallet and your wellbeing, as the feet are the body’s own thermostat.

Different installation alternative of Uponor Underfloor Heating System Uponor Underfloor Heating Systems can be combined with the Granab Subfloor System with different laying methods. You can choose between laying Uponor UFH Chipboards, groo-

ved 17, over the joists, joists mounting the Uponor UFH Cassette 20 with insulation between the floor joists, or Underfloor Heating on a self-carrying floor on top of the joists

Uponor UFH Chip board 17 on the Granab joists

Uponor UFH Cassette 20 between the Granab joists

Uponor UFH on a self-carrying floor on Granab joists

Grooved UFH Chip board is glued and screwed securely to the joists. Heat emission plates to distribute the heat are laid in the grooves and then underfloor heating pipes are inserted into the plates. Renovation gypsum boards are mounted before the flooring is laid. This gives free mounting direction of parquet.

Underfloor heating is installed in an Uponor UFH Cassette 20 with insulation, which is laid between the floor joists. The cassettes rest on Uponor Cassette support. The standard distance between joists is c/c 600 mm. The flooring can be of 22 mm parquet (alternative 22 mm chip board with 14 mm parquet). Follow the floor manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

On a carrying 22 mm chip board on a Granab joist system Underfloor Heating can be installed in Uponor 30 mm polystyrene panels, alternative the heating system can be installed in a ”self-levelling” poured screed. Consider the need of moisture proof layer.

The panels are jointed on the joists according to installation instructions. Heat emission plates, which spread the heat evenly over the floor, are laid into the grooves followed by the Underfloor Heating pipe 17x2.0 mm. Gypsum board 6-13 mm is then screwed to the chip board with fixings at c/c 200 mm. Use rag paper below the floor covering when using parquet. Gypsum boards give free installation direction of parquet. Follow parquet supplier instructions (13-16 mm chip board with vinyl flooring can replace parquet).

In dry rooms: The surface is protected with a primer prior to the laying of floor tiles in accordance with installation instructions. In wet rooms: Replace the gypsum board with an aqua board (approved resistance against mildew), the screed should be equipped with water barrier (membrane) prior to laying floor tiles in accordance with the supplier’s installation instructions.

Uponor UFH Chip board, grooved 17 Procedure for installation See even: Mounting instruction for Uponor UFH Chip Board 17 together with Granab Subfloor system.

First the surfaces where the underfloor heating and subfloor systems are to be installed must be cleaned and made accessible. The manifold cabinet should be positioned as shown in the drawing.

Secure the conduit pipes as required, with a distance of max 600 mm between the clips. The last clamping ring before the connection point must be no closer than 600 mm. The conduit pipe must stop approx. 150 mm above the finished floor.

Install the feed lines from the heat source to the underfloor heating manifold. The supply line is fitted to the upper manifold and the return line to the lower one. Each manifold is equipped with a balancing valve. The feed lines must be secured sufficiently.

Any excess adhesive should be wiped away, with particular attention being paid to grooves where underfloor heating plates or pipes will be fitted later. Holes (diameter approx. 65 mm) must be drilled in the Uponor UFH Chip board for the underfloor heating pipes, supply lines. It may be helpful to cut an extra hole in line with the first in order to facilitate the use of rising pipes. The position of the hole is shown in the underfloor heating drawing. It should be positioned where the loop field starts or ends.

Electrical wiring and pipes are drawn flexibly under the finished floor

The subfloor system should now be installed according to Granab’s installation instructions.

The protective pipe is secured to the underlying surface using pipe clips

Install conduit pipe from the manifold cabinet to each loop and connection point. “Connection point” means the place where the underfloor heating pipe is to come up through the Uponor UFH Chip board, grooved 17 (see underfloor heating drawing).

If the walls are to be plastered, make sure that the gypsum board beneath the manifold cabinet does not reach right down to the basefloor. The board must stop level with the upper edge of the Granab floor joist. Fit the Uponor Chip board over the Granab subfloor. All joints must be glued in accordance with instructions. Mount short joints over the joists and screw the chip board.

The underfloor heating pipes are drawn through conduit pipes to every room with underfloor heating

Make sure that pipes passing through the chipboard have a soft bend so that the pipe will not press against the parquet or floor surface that will be laid over the Uponor UFH Chip board.

Uponor UFH Chip board, grooved 17 Installation over floor joists

The turning grooves for the underfloor heating pipes must be milled as close to the opposite wall as possible. Check also that the depth of the groove is sufficient. Normally, the depth of the groove corresponds to the maximum depth of the Uponor Milling Machine.

After vacuuming, the floor surface must be covered with Uponor Heat emission plates. All straight grooves are equipped with plates. The distance between the plates must be 10-100 mm lengthwise.

Once all the loops have been filled and tested for tightness, each underfloor heating loop can be balanced in accordance with Uponor’s underfloor heating calculation.

The underfloor heating pipes can then be installed. Remember to connect the supply and return lines to the correct part of the underfloor heating manifold. Check also that the pipe have no tension when coming up and down from the Uponor UFH Chip board.

6-13mm gypsum board is then installed over the pipe and heat emission plates. It should be screwed into the chip board between the Heat emission plates c/c 200 mm. Then parquet can be laid freely in any direction.

All underfloor heating loops must be marked at the underfloor heating manifold in accordance with Uponor’s underfloor heating drawing with room designation and/or loop number. The protective pipes containing the underfloor heating pipes are drawn up and connected to the underfloor heating manifold

Before installing underfloor heating plates the floor surface must be vacuumcleaned carefully.

Before the floor is covered, the underfloor heating system must be tested for tightness in accordance with Uponor’s instructions. This testing must also be documented in a separate document.

10 Granab Subfloor System and Uponor Underfloor Heating System

It is important that the floor surface layer or protective flooring be fitted as soon as possible after the system has been tested for tightness. NB! The Uponor UFH Chip board is not intended for use as a working floor. Once installation is complete, install and function test room regulation.

Procedure for installation

See even: Mounting instruction for Uponor UFH Cassette 20 together with Granab Subfloor system.

Work begins with the surfaces where the underfloor heating and subfloor systems are to be installed being cleaned and made accessible. Then install the manifold cabinet with the manifold positioned as shown in the drawing.

In between the joists of the subfloor system, support brackets for the UFH cassettes are fitted using the holes beside the joists. Three support brackets must be fitted for each cassette.

Install the feed lines from the heat source to the underfloor heating manifold. The supply line is fitted to the upper manifold and the return line to the lower one. Each manifold is equipped with a balancing valve.

For smaller cross bar compartments, cut support brackets and underfloor heating cassettes to fit

The feed lines must be secured sufficiently. Max 800 mm distance between clips. Install conduit pipe from the manifold cabinet to each loop and connection point. “Connection point” means the place where the underfloor heating pipe is to come up near the Uponor UFH Cassette (see underfloor heating drawing). Secure the conduit pipes as required, though with a distance of max 600 mm between the clips. The last clamping ring before the connection point must be at least 600 mm away. The conduit pipe must stop approx. 150 mm above the finished floor. The subfloor system 7000 should now be installed according to Granab’s installation instructions

12 Granab Subfloor System and Uponor Underfloor Heating System

The underfloor heating cassettes are laid on top of the cassette support

For passage between the subfloor bays there must be a gap of approx. 50 mm between the longitudinal and the transverse joist.

If a joist intervall has a c-distance less than 600 mm, the support brackets should be split and laid as overlapping. Both ends should be fastened together using pop rivets, tape or equivalent.

Cover the floor surface with Uponor UFH cassettes. The distance between the cassettes must be 10-100 mm lengthwise. The cassette stops 300 mm from the transverse floor joist.

If the walls are to be plastered, make sure that the gypsum board beneath the manifold cabinet does not reach right down to the floor. The board must stop level with the upper edge of the Granab floor joist.

Vacuum-clean the Uponor UFH Cassettes, particularly in the grooves, before beginning to lay the underfloor heating pipes.

Once the subfloor system has been installed, installation of the underfloor heating cassettes can begin.

Install the underfloor heating pipes in accordance with the underfloor heating drawing produced and connect them to the installed underfloor heating manifold.

Remember to connect the supply and return lines to the correct part of the underfloor heating manifold. Check also that the pipes are not coming loose and touching parts of the joists.

All underfloor heating loops must be marked at the underfloor heating manifold in accordance with Uponor’s underfloor heating drawing with loop number and/or room designation.

Rising pipes must have a soft bend so that they do not press against the parquet or flooring particle board that will be laid over the joist floor.

Before the floor is covered, the underfloor heating system must be tested for tightness in accordance with Uponor’s instructions. This testing must also be documented in a separate document. Once all the loops have been filled and tested for leaks, each underfloor heating loop can be adjusted in accordance with Uponor’s underfloor heating calculation It is important that the floor surface layer or protective flooring be installed as soon as possible after the system has been tested for tightness.

A finished underfloor heating system must be tightness tested before the surface layer is installed

Once installation is complete, install and function test room regulation.

An underfloor heating system allows almost complete freedom when it comes to furnishing

NB! The underfloor heating cassettes are not intended for use as a working floor
