PARTNERING WITH AFRICA TO END THE HIV/AIDS & WATER CRISES P.O. Box 60381 | Nashville, TN 37206 | T (615) 550-4296 | bloodwater.org

MISSION AND RESULTS

Blood:Water is an equipping agency that partners with African grassroots organizations to address the HIV/AIDS and water crises. We do this by identifying Africa’s hidden heroes and coming alongside their vision for change. Through technical, financial and organizational support, we expand the reach and effectiveness of African civil society organizations and the communities they serve. We’re partnering with Africa to end the HIV/AIDS and water crises. With a decade of experience, we’ve hit significant milestones:

Sub-Saharan Africa

Two of the greatest public health threats around the world—the HIV/AIDS and water crises— disproportionally affect Sub-Saharan Africa. Their intersection creates vulnerability as poor water, sanitation and hygiene are a leading cause of sickness and death among people living with HIV/AIDS.

PREGNANCIES 9 in 10 of pregnant women living with HIV live in Sub-Saharan Africa.

CHILDREN with HIV 9 in 10 children living with HIV live in Sub-Saharan Africa.

CLEAN WATER The World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 20 liters of water per day for consumption, cooking and cleaning. For a person living with HIV, the needs can increase significantly to over 100 liters per day.

Water-borne disease rates are up to 6 times higher in people living with HIV/AIDS than those who are not infected.

“If you have come here to save me, you are wasting our time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together. -Lila Watson, Aboriginal Activist

OUR APPROACH

OUR APPROACH IS SIMPLE. IT BEGINS WITH YOU.

Your contributions are the fuel that allow us to equip African organizations and their communities in fighting the HIV/AIDS and water crises.

WE PARTNER WITH LOCAL DOERS OF GOOD.

We lead a driven selection process to find Africa’s hidden heroes and grassroots organizations who are already working with the cultural and community knowledge to facilitate real change.

WE STRENGTHEN OUR PARTNERS.

We partner with these passionate groups to provide technical, financial and organizational support to strengthen their reach and effectiveness to the communities they serve.

PARTNERS BUILD COMMUNITIES.

Our partners are mobilizing their communities toward social change. They begin by organizing committee meetings, support groups and local trainings.

HEALTHY PARTNERS, HEALTHY COMMUNITIES Our partners are stronger than ever before, continuing to build their communities toward fullness of health. Partners and communities alike are the ones who are there for the long haul, equipped to serve as catalysts for change across Africa. The end of the HIV/AIDS and water crises are within their reach.

IMMEDIATE OUTCOMES

Each partner uses different solutions for HIV/AIDS and water, according to what their communities need. These solutions can include wells, latrines and clinics. We support our partners with funding and expertise to augment the technical side of these immediate outcomes.

KENYA:

WATER FOR VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES We partner with African grassroots organizations to increase

Water access for HIV- positive people In partnership with FH Kenya, we are focused on bringing water, sanitation and hygiene training to HIV support groups, as well as providing rain tanks and latrines for 6,000 people in the desert region of northern Kenya

access to water, sanitation and hygiene for vulnerable communities across Kenya, Uganda and Zambia. We focus on serving populations specifically burdened by HIV/AIDS, recovering from decades of civil war and those living in urban slums and shanty compounds. Several years of experience with these partners allows us to effectively apply programmatic approaches proven to work in these specific geographies over time.

UGANDA: Improved health in a war-torn area After two decades of civil war in northern Uganda, many villages are in ruins. In partnership with Divine Waters, we are improving the health of 10,000 people through new wells, a protected spring and health training for 10 schools and 60 religious leaders.

ZAMBIA: Multiplying healthy homes In the Copperbelt Province, more than half the population is living in urban slums and shanty compounds with poor sanitation and unsafe water. In partnership with Seeds of Hope International, we are training 260 families in water, sanitation and hygiene while providing 1,000 people with access to safe water.

HIV/AIDS SERVICES TO OVERLOOKED REGIONS While there have been great advances with life-saving interventions for people living with HIV/AIDS, there are still millions of people who have no such access. In many cases, medical services aren’t available in the region. If available, services are scattered and lack qualified medical professionals. We are committed to both bringing

KENYA: A new clinic with specialized HIV/AIDS services We are expanding from our clinic model in northern Kenya to bring comprehensive HIV/AIDS testing, counseling, treatment, care and education to the Isiolo region—an area that has one of the highestprevalence rates of HIV/AIDS in its province but with very few treatment centers. We will provide specialized HIV/AIDS services to more than 1,000 people.

A sustainable life for HIV-positive people and their families About 15,000 displaced people live in an informal settlement outside of the nation’s capital and lack adequate HIV services, as well as clean water and sanitation. The ACT Project and Blood:Water are partnering to stabilize 236 vulnerable f amilies through HIV/AIDS services, water, sanitation and hygiene.

ZAMBIA: Linking communities to HIV/AIDS services The Copperbelt Province has the second highest HIV prevalence in Zambia with little access to adequate HIV/AIDS services. In partnership with Seeds of Hope International, we are linking 4,000 people to the social and medical services they need to address HIV/AIDS. Additionally 5,600 community members will be provided with HIV education.

KENYA:

QUALITY CARE FOR HIV-POSITIVE PEOPLE It is one thing to build a HIV clinic, but the most life-changing potential is the quality of the service provided in the clinic. In resource-low settings like Sub-Saharan Africa, it is difficult to maintain qualified staff, adequate training and a comprehensive focus on the multiple needs of each patient.

Delivering the best care for HIV-positive people in a resource-low setting The Lwala Community Hospital is currently serving more than a thousand HIV-positive patients with care and plans to add another 400 patients this year. Together, we are building the expertise of the hospital staff, strengthening the quality of HIV services to current patients and scaling up operations to meet the increasing service demand for HIV support services.

While most donor agencies demand more numbers of patients served with little attention to the kind of service being provided, our commitment is to increase new patients while also ensuring that current patients are receiving

living with HIV/AIDS.

In the desert of northern Kenya, the Tumaini Medical Centre has been a successful and important initiative in meeting the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. In partnership with FH Kenya, we are increasing the center’s capacity and quality in services to reach the 4,600 people living with HIV/AIDS.

Where only 3,000 of the 18,000 HIV-positive people in Kitgum have access to medical care, together, we are increasing the quality and capacity of New Life Medical Center’s medical and community health outreach services. This includes building a maternity ward, supporting 400 pregnant mothers, reaching 5,000 more people with HIV testing and counseling and building the capacity of the local church to run its services.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

DONATE Donate and leave a lasting impact on our work in Africa.

START FUNDRAISING We are fueled by the creative fundraising initiatives of individuals like you. Every voice and every dollar counts. You can participate in our seasonal campaigns highlighted at bloodwater.org. Here are other ways friends of Blood:Water have creatively partnered to end the HIV/AIDS and water crises in Africa:

Birthdays

Sporting Events

Craft Making

Instead of asking for gifts, advocates of Blood:Water have asked their friends and family to donate to Blood:Water instead.

Whether they’re running a marathon or skydiving for the first time, friends of Blood:Water have used sporting events to raise funds and awareness.

Some have skills in making jewelry, while others thrive at making clay coffee cups. Whatever their talents, they’ve donated profits from sales to Blood:Water’s cause.

Lemon:AID

Save a Drink, Save a Life

Make a stand for clean water! As the weather gets warmer, kids are invited to host lemonade stands to help bring clean water to Africa.

During the season of Lent, Save a Drink participants give up or match the cost of a drink for 40 days.

The Walter Project

Kids from churches across the country are invited to join Walter the Water Drop and help kids in Africa gain access to clean, safe water.

HISTORY AND TIMELINE 2004

Since our launch in 2004, Blood:Water has raised over $22 million through the creative efforts of tens of thousands of individuals seeking to make a difference. We believe that Africa holds the leadership, creativity, passion and resolve necessary to address the HIV/AIDS and water crises. That’s why we’ve spent the past ten years working alongside more than a dozen African organizations

But, it is a slowly by slowly, uneven kind of progress. While access to water has increased dramatically in the last decade and some places are seeing a reduction in new HIV infections, millions still need safe water and health and

support services for HIV. The stakes are high, and lives are at risk—for women and children, mostly. We are morally implicated in this. It is personal for us, and we’re not backing down. We know that the only way we can get to see the end of the HIV/AIDS and water crises in Africa is to continue to build the movement of families,
