Letter from the President As we say good-bye to a summer spent outdoors, swimming, biking, jogging, walking and just plain enjoying the warm days and nights, let’s not forget to keep up with those activities that keep us happy and fit this fall. Included in every prescription for positive mental and physical health throughout the lifespan is the need for physical activity. Involvement in physical activity has been linked with decreases in obesity and diabetes in children and adults along with decreases in the major health issues that plague us in our later years including heart disease, cancer and dementia.

Buzz Puccio

Research indicates that one of the best ways to stay physically and mentally fit throughout our lives is to get up and move. The Bloomingdale Park District is here to help you do just that! The fall season brings about much change. Kids go back to school, the leaves begin to change and daylight gets scarce. With holidays seemingly right around the corner, it can seem impossible to find time to exercise. Before the weather gets too chilly, enjoy the outdoors with the Park District’s highly-popular Walk-to-Run program led by Park District sports injury and wellness specialist Dr. Erin Ducat. Condition yourself to race three miles safely and effectively in this 10-week program that culminates with the Sunrise Chevrolet 5K Shuffle Oct. 21 at Ballydoyle Irish Pub & Restaurant. Once the weather begins to change, turn your attention indoors and try one of our new fitness classes. Are you an early riser? The Park District now offers an abundance of early-bird classes (see pages 33-39) in addition to the Westfield Walking Track for those wishing to get a jump on the day. If you miss the open lap swim at The Oasis, try one of our aqua classes held at Hilton/Indian Lakes Resort. These programs are less stressful on your joints but just as beneficial to your health. Can’t commit to 8 weeks of exercise? In addition to the three aqua classes mentioned above, the District offers a number of other fitness classes that offer convenient drop-in rates. The fee is ideal for parents and/or working professionals who can’t always keep to a structured schedule. Check out the following pages and pick up the complete fitness schedule available now online and in the Johnston Recreation Center, and begin the journey to a healthier, fitter you!

Property Taxes Most of us have just made payment of the second installment of our property taxes for 2011. While the bill is still readily accessible, please take a look at what you actually pay for the many benefits provided by the Bloomingdale Park District. With our tax rate of .3301, I think you’ll agree with me that the value provided is one of your best buys. We still remain near the bottom of DuPage County communities in tax rate and on top of the list of activities offered. 2011 Tax Rates for Neighboring Park Districts .6787 Wheaton .3747 Addison .4691 Carol Stream .3711 Glen Ellyn .4678 Itasca .3301 Bloomingdale .4593 Roselle .2941 Medinah Sincerely, Sebastian “Buzz” Puccio President Bloomingdale Park District Board of Commissioners

Making a Difference Geri McGreevy and Augie Battaglia recently stepped down as Chair and ViceChair of the Bloomingdale Parks Foundation, capping 9+ years of volunteer service.

The two Park District residents joined the Foundation in 2003. McGreevy previously served on the Park District Board of Commissioners for 12 years (1991-2003). “I wanted to do something in the community,” said Battaglia. “My daughter was growing up and I was already volunteering for little league, and this and that. And I thought the Foundation was a great way to show my children how to be a part of the community.” The pair oversaw a number of accomplishments in their time on the Foundation, including: • Aim for the Fences, a fundraising campaign that raised over $25,000 to improve the baseball and softball complex at Springfield Park • Creation and management of a scholarship fund • Construction of the boardwalk and observation deck at the Springfield Park Wetlands • Organization of the Annual Recognition Event to honor community volunteers • Construction of the Springfield Park outdoor basketball courts • Construction of the picnic pavilion at Springfield Park • Organization of Make a Difference Day at Springfield Park, an event featuring nature activities and wetlands education The Parks Foundation and Park District thank Ms. McGreevey and Mr. Battaglia for their outstanding years of service and wish them well in their future endeavors.

The Bloomingdale Parks Foundation is an organization dedicated to helping the Park District provide great recreation programs and open space while also assisting individuals to gain access to programs, enhancing current programs and making improvements to all of BPD’s parks. The Foundation was established in 1994 as a not-for-profit organization. Its primary purpose is to develop alternate sources of funding for Bloomingdale Park District facilities and recreation programs, and to provide opportunities for all Park District participants. The Foundation holds a 501-C3 status from the IRS. The Foundation currently holds three special fundraising events per year: • Sunrise Shuffle 5K – See page 31. • Holiday Gift Wrap – Enjoy the holiday season by assisting others in wrapping gifts. Volunteer with friends or make new ones at this holiday fundraiser. • Most Valuable Volunteer Night – Volunteers for the Park District, Museum and local youth athletic organizations are honored at this annual event held in conjunction with National Night Out. Raffle baskets are donated by nominating organizations, and free food and swimming at The Oasis Water Park is provided for all!
